Traitor's Heart (Enemy's Keeper Book 2) teaser

I'm INCREDIBLY excited for this release!! The original Enemy's Keeper Book 2 was written ~10years ago before I wrote the prequel, The Thief's Keeper. Aelfric's life and backstory completely changed the rest of the series, and major rewriting & editing were needed. I spent 18 months doing just that... with the help of 25 beta readers who left thousands of comments and answered hundreds of questionnaires. I'm so GRATEFUL for all your help and enthusiasm!!

Toby's POV makes a debut in this book. It was completely unplanned. Like Aelfric, Toby wanted to tell his tale, and his perspective made the story so much richer.

I can't wait to share this story with everyone!

I had the opportunity to beta read this gem, and it was an amazing experience. The begining of the first chapter included a recap of some moments from the previous book. It helped me recollect where the previous book had left off, which further helped me get immersed in the story.

Just like the previous books, this one too was high on emotions expressed in subtle and beautiful ways. The writing flowed smoothly, and as the story developed I found myself rooting for a character I couldn't have cared for in the earlier book.

Matthew's journey from a prejudiced young man with a singular goal to an open-minded, caring person wanting to do good for others was the highlight of the story. While I enjoyed Toby and Aliwyn's parts as well, I think Matthew stole the show in this one. I also loved his big brother-like interactions with Domilo and Kato.

Toby and Aliwyn's relationship progressed well despite all the complications. It was built on forgiveness, trust and the need to push each other to be the best version of themselves. It was heartwarming to see them evolve together.

The book had a good amount of conflict and issues sprinkled throughout, and it was great seeing the characters put in efforts to solve them. My favourite moments were the important revelations involving Matthew, Aliwyn and Toby. I ugly cried during all the scenes.

The end had a lot of action, and I was nervous the entire time wondering about the fate of the characters. All of them were flawed, but I couldn't find myself hating any of them, excluding Jacques Verdun ofcourse! I can't wait to see what comes next for them.

Kyrie Wang has done a fantastic job with the worldbuilding, and I highly recommend this book to historical fantasy readers.

A healer forced to destroy. A warrior forced to betray. In the shadow of rebellion, every choice leaves a scar.

🔥~Characters~🔥
COUPLE NUMBER ONE
(Aliwyn ''Ali'') FMC She doesn't know where her loyalty lies. I liked her I guess she was kinda moody but I feel like she was also going through a lot so I get it.

(Tobias "Toby" Boltan) MMC He is basically leader of the rebels. I kinda liked him. He was a lil emo I guess which isn't personally my favorite but even though I didn't love the characters this author makes it so the story is good enough to still enjoy without liking the characters.

COUPLE NUMBER TWO
( Matthew Marcotte ) MMC He is loyal to King William. He was ok he just kept doing an saying stuff I didn't really like.

(Reiya) FMC She is Chief of the Mehi tribe. She was ok. she was a good chief.

LOYAL TO KING WILLIAM
(Evelyn Marcotte) MATTHEW'S OLDER COUSIN
She was kinda annoying sometimes.

(Marie Marcotte) MATTHEW'S YOUNGER COUSIN
I liked her she was cute.

REBELS
(Ransley Boltan) TOBY'S FATHER he was ok I don't really know what else to say about him.

(Edward Boltan) TOBY'S UNCLE he was kinda abusive. I didn't really like him.

(Emma) A GIRL TOBY RESCUED FROM THE STREET I liked her she was a sweetie.

(Zelrin "Zel") A BOY TOBY RESCUED FROM THE STREET he was one of my favorites from this book.

UNDETERMINED ALLEGIANCE
(Kato) EVELYN'S CRUSH He got rejected from the  Vasfians for a few reasons mainly because his mother who used to be a part of the tribe wronged them in some way and because he doesn't have freckles which Vasfians typically think is quite ugly.

VASFIANS
(Abithi) REIYA'S MOTHER she was kind of annoying and controlling.

(Namanti) REIYA'S GRANDMOTHER she was ok I guess.

(Domilo) REIYA'S LITTLE BROTHER I liked him I liked all of the kid characters the most.

(Nissa) REIYA'S COUSIN I liked her as well she was pretty cute.

🛡️~Quotes~🛡️
(This is an arc so quotes may be different when the book is released)

“Hold still, Matthew Marcotte. If I wanted to choke you, I would’ve done so days ago.”

“I- I’m ready.” Grabbing a rag, she rubbed her face with its icy dampness to steady herself. She had work to do, no matter how handsome the patient was.

Despite the uncertainty, his closeness felt like a refuge.

She leaned against him. “It wasn’t the most dignified entrance, but I don’t…” She bit her lip. “I don’t know how we would’ve spoken otherwise. You’re a knight, and I’m…” He raised an eyebrow. “Are knights not allowed to speak to attractive women?” Her breath caught. Of all the places in the world, he could still make her blush.

📜~What I liked~📜
The cover, The writing style, Journal scene, when Reiya brought Matthew the fire wood, The guide to show where the character's loyalties lie, The plot, The art work that goes with this book, The ending

💣~What I disliked~💣
It was kinda slow paced but sometimes you want something a little slower so I would definitely still recommend this (read Healer's Blade first though)

⚓~Content/Trigger Warnings~⚓
Blood, Medical treatment, Death of a loved one, Grief, Matthew's father used to get drunk a lot and was abusive towards Him, prostitutes are mentioned, Toby's parents had him without ever being married, arsenic poisoning, Animal Death  Death of a pregnant woman (past), Head injury, Illness, Death, Murder (on page)

What a story!, I.oved following the characters and seeing the character development! This story did not disappoint! Lots of action and we got to see the characters grow. Of course the story ends on cliffhangers and we want to know what happens next. We have seen secrets revealed . Yet many secrets remain and we, the readers, are eagerly awaiting the next installment of the story. But this installment is to be savored and very much enjoyed!

❗Disclaimer: I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

🜲 Characters 🜲
It was such a nice encounter with some of the previous characters from Enemy's Keeper series. I loved their growth and how many bonds have been formed throughout the story. It was such a heartwarming feeling seeing Ali grow into such a strong and beautiful character.

⚔︎ World-Building ⚔︎
The details of the world and the events that happened in the book made me get even more immersed in the story. As usual, it is quite a cruel world, and there are a lot of things happening that may not be for everyone. For me it was quite a ride, and I enjoyed every single detail offered.

♡ What I liked/Disliked ♡
I loved the way things developed and the pov's we've received. I loved seeing Matt and Reiya in another light, and their funny moments were definitely sweet but also very silly, because Matt, not even if the flirt hits him in the head, won't be able to see it, which made me giggle many times. I LOVED the first kiss in the story, it was so much-awaited and when it came, it made everything so beautiful. The kiss was tender and sweet, exactly what you'd expect from two people who slowly fall in love. I definitely loved the growth of the characters as I mentioned above, especially after Healer's Blade when Ali wasn't my favorite, she has grown on me and I loved the change! The world is not kind and there are lots of things happening, the details offered of the world, actions and events were beautifully crafted and It definitely caught me. I am definitely excited to see where things go.

🔥 Spice Level/Potential Triggers 🔥
The story has no spice. There's only one kiss, as mentioned above. Potential triggers that I think are worth mentioning are loss of a family member, mid-graphic info on head harvesting/beheading, wolf attack, abuse, broken bones, and parental trauma. Nothing that happened in the story triggered me, since it is intended for a younger audience, the story is not overly graphic but it doesn't shy away from some more darker subjects.

This is the second book in the Enemy’s Keeper series and takes place immediately after the action in book 1, Healer’s Blade. On one side, we have the Boltons who are English rebels fighting the French Norman invaders. On the other side, we have the Marcottes, English supporters of the Norman king, and the local tribes. Caught in the middle are peasants and small villages who just want to be left alone. The story is told from the POV of Tobias Bolton- a bastard son, but the sole remaining heir to his father and uncle, Matthew Marcotte - a squire in the Norman army, and Aliwyn - a healer, an orphan, and one of the peasants caught in the middle.
We are immediately dumped into the action of the story. Aliwyn has been taken as hostage during a battle at the water mill. All of the action (and there is a lot of it) takes place during six days as the armies converge on Revener’s Point on the river. There are crosses and double crosses, unwilling allies, and traitors to the cause and to their hearts.
The characters are more fleshed out in this book and Aliwyn’s redemption arc is especially gratifying to see as she matures a lot in a short time. Two of my favorite characters from the first book, Kato and Evelyn, reappear but in such minor roles, I was a little disappointed. There is hope, however. The book clearly ends on a “to be continued” vibe and I am already looking forward to the next one.
TW: death, family betrayal, violence against children, racism, prejudice. Spice is of the “first kiss” variety.

“I lost a friend that day, but so did you. Everyone loses in war, but I still have you. Please don’t push me away.” “I’m scared of what they’ll do to you.” “I feel the same about you. Whatever happens, let me make my own decisions. I don’t want to turn against you when the Normans arrive.”

The danger and suspense just keep building in this magic-free, alternative history fantasy story! This is book 2 and picks up just a few days before the ending of book 1 from a different character’s perspective. It’s action packed, with plenty of twist and a few light faith elements. The story is still not resolved and I am already anticipating book 3.

Matthew is determined, he will keep his promise to his best friend no matter what. He’ll even form an unexpected alliance and desires revenge too. He has a lot of lessons to learn about himself and those around him. Reiya is fierce. She is a warrior and a chief struggling to believe she knows best.

Aliwyn is caring and determined. She wants to do right. I loved her relationships with Emma and Zelrin, she was so gentle and understanding with them. Toby is loyal to his family and protective of Ali, Emma, and Zel. He had to deal with a lot of self doubt and a family secret. Ali and Toby faced many dangers side by side. Their trust in each other was definitely tested. They had a sweet romance.

A few more quotes:
“All soldiers are afraid of something. The courageous ones fight all the same. It’s all right to be afraid.”

“I told you I was out of practice, but you told me I was doing the right thing, that I was very skilled. Looking back, it made all the difference. Sometimes you just need one person who believes in you to push onward. For me, that person was you.”

“I’m still yours,” he murmured. “And I’m yours,” she whispered.

Kyrie Wang took everything she built in the first book – the danger, emotional depth, moral knots, and the aching moments between characters doing their best to survive – and ramped up the tension in Traitor’s Heart.
Alliances shift, trust is rare, every choice has consequences, yet the characters still reach for hope. Moments of connection land hard in the darker moments.
Matthew’s inner conflict, his mistakes, and the slow reshaping of his conscience make him a most compelling character this time around. Reiya’s fierce, proud resilience enriches the narrative. Toby’s storyline had me in tears.
Loyalty, love, and war's ugly realities tug at Aliwyn, who continues to shine amid conflicted factions.
There’s action aplenty - raids, escapes, political manoeuvrings, and a new threat. Still, the moments that hit hardest are the stolen conversations, fragile truces, unexpected alliances, and the subtle, slow-burning romances. Phew!
Wang’s writing shines brightest in the emotional details: a character hardening his jaw against fear, hope rising when a familiar figure walks toward him through the chaos, sparks rising from a fire as forgiveness hangs in the air. These intimate moments make the book unforgettable.
Hope is the silver lining in every cloud. A treat!

5 stars (5/10 hearts). Okay, this is one of the type of books I love—with a storyline that arcs over the entire series. Now that I know that, I am so eager to read books 0.5 & 1 again to trace it more closely!

I started out pretty much despising Matthew, though I also couldn't help liking him a little, but by the end he was a solid favourite. And Reiya too. ;) I just loved following along on his moral dilemmas as he tried to decide if he was gonna do what was right and suffer, or what was convenient and also suffer. His healing + growth was slow but deep, and I loved the ending. As for Reiya, I'm loving seeing her step in as chieftess! Aliwyn & Toby have a rather more tumultuous half of the book, adding suspense to the the storyline, but they also had their moral dilemmas and especially a lot of communication difficulties/trust issues! And oh, I loved seeing Aelfric's shadow reappear. I finally am at peace with book 1 now.

As always, I loved the alternate history setting, with the whole gunpowder problem, and I really enjoyed getting to study Reiya's tribe more. In short, it was a very enjoyable novel that stuck with me long after I finished it, and I eagerly awaited book 3!

*Favourite quotes & content list to come upon reread. I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

Kyrie hits it out of the park once again! I love the character development. Reiya is one of my absolute favorites. You can feel her struggle as a new chief to her people and the need for the elders of the tribe to let her lead. She wants to adhere and respect the old ways but you can see she is open to new possibilities.
One thing I really enjoyed was how whether it was Toby or Matthews POV you were reading you could fully empathize with them and understand why they were angry at the other. Id finish reading Matthews POV and think Toby deserved what he had coming to him, and then by the time i was done with Toby’s i was back to thinking Matthew was in the wrong.
The time on the ship was also really exciting and i enjoyed seeing that all playout.
Highly recommend and i, excited for the 3Rd book!

I received an arc of this book and would like to thank Kyrie for providing me one.

I enjoyed rejoining the world of Enemy's Keeper and the characters had grown a lot and learnt that maybe the world is not black or white, things are much more complicated than that, and they are becoming the hopefully wonderful adults they will be.

There is a lot more to the danger in book 2 that will influence not just England, but the whole world if not handled delicately, and it raised the tension and consequences of the character's actions.

The reason I gave this four stars is because every time I saw Matthew, I got annoyed at his naivety and straight forward thinking (not a bad thing per se but just a personal opinion which influenced, whenever it switched to his pov, me wanting to scream at him).

The cliffhanger has me hanging and I'm scared for the oncoming journey. However, the ending felt quite abrupt and perhaps this was sorted out in the official story.

Fantastic book! It does a great job of recapping the first book if you haven't read it (although this one is meant to be read afterwards). Good development of Matthew, Aliwyn, and Tobias (and we *finally* get some of his backstory!). Plus there's more AliwynxToby 😍 and they are so cute together. Medically and historically accurate as always. The later half of the book is a wild ride, so be emotionally prepared! There is a cliffhanger for one of the characters , though it's not too bad, so I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

My review of book 1.

Genre: Alternate history (Celtic-inspired tribe)
*Not really a fantasy, even though it’s labelled as such. It might be because of the alternate history, but since there is nothing actually fantastical, as in things that couldn’t happen or don’t exist, it doesn’t fit the traditional definition of the genre.
Tropes: Found family, she saves him, enemies-to-more
Setting: Medieval England (1075 CE; nine years after the Norman invasion)
Writing style: Triple POV, 3rd person, past tense
Tone: Serious, heavy
My emotions reading it: Emotionally drained (as only thoughtfully crafted, heartfelt writing can make you feel)
Character- or plot-driven: Both

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 mouth kiss while lying together (not sleeping together) with paragraph-long description, in a greater romantic context
• Another mouth kiss barely described
• 1 partial embrace + desire to kiss, 2 sentence description
• 1 extended embrace with tame emotional and sensory detail (heartbeat, warmth, scent)
• 1 forehead kiss, 1 sentence detail
• 1 kiss on eyelids
• 1 cheek kiss, zero description
• 1 fingers kiss, zero description
• 1 urge to kiss
• Quick recall of a kiss
• 1 instance of snuggling into neck, no description
• 1 forehead touch, zero description
• A hug
*See caveats below

Sensitive aspects:
• Man and woman wake up after having slept in each other’s arms the previous night (nothing happened), and the man says, “The best sleep I’ve had in weeks, thanks to you.”
• Man later recalls how she “pulled him close” in the sleeping bag they shared.
• Man and woman are embarrassed when he has to take off his shirt so she can tend to a wound and she notices his arms and torso.
• Passing reference to when a character was a child and caught his mother in a tryst, 4 references to “prostitute” (to malign a main character’s mother, who had him out of wedlock).
• This has the most gruesome scene in the series so far. I’d say the violence level is moderate — not generally focused on for longer than necessary, but not shied away from when warranted.
• Some mostly-mild language: 1 of p**s, 4 instances of “bloody” (including as part of an expression – ____ Kraken).

Favorite aspects of the book:
• The way characters grow and reassess their perspectives
• How Aliwyn, Toby, and Zelrin all take care of little Emma
• A heartwarming embrace between Toby and Emma in chapter 18

Favorite characters/relationships:
• Aliwyn and Matthew
• Matthew and Domilo, Toby and Emma, Aliwyn and Emma

*The author provides a character chart and a character list at the start of the book to help keep track of the characters, their relationships, and which side of the war they’re on.

Traitor’s Heart in particular may be best suited for older teens and adults who enjoy complex and thought-provoking stories with gritty, often heavy themes. Especially-sensitive people should tread carefully.

This book offers great character growth and takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. Everything is so realistically complicated and tangled. Nothing is simplistic or sugar-coated, or totally bleak and hopeless. The characters continue to feel believably complex as they navigate messy, confusing situations. Their unpredictability works well, making them authentically human and preventing them from being formulaic or one-note.

The story jumps right into the action — it truly feels like picking up where things left off, even though the timeline steps back a bit. I’m especially glad to return to multiple points of view. I missed getting to know the characters better and getting a more complete picture of their personal character and complexities. That shift allows the reader to skip much of the judgment the characters make from having incomplete information.

Matthew continuously rises in my estimation throughout the story. He’s one of my favorite characters, possibly the greatest source of light in so much darkness. He feels very realistic and grounded, with a good balance of flaws and gradual growth. It’s refreshing to see someone wrestle with hurt and disillusionment, yet still choose understanding over judgment. When he realizes someone close to him wasn’t entirely truthful, he has the humility, strength, and faith in the person to seek to understand, even through his feelings of betrayal.

I love the character growth in Domilo as well, and the way Matthew and Domilo’s relationship develops. We see more of Matthew’s good qualities — his ability to recognize his own failings when Domilo calls him out (not even to help him!), and his sincere resolution to do better. It provides real hope that Matthew will shed his prejudice against the Vasfians, and it’s a pleasure to see a genuine connection begin to form between the two characters as they start to understand each other.

Aliwyn continues to grow as a character in many ways. She attains a new level of maturity and understanding later in the story as she comes to terms with the fact that two people she loves both did terrible, morally questionable things. She doesn’t fall into the trap of complete condemnation or complete justification. Instead, she understands that while they both caused harm, they acted out of what they believed was necessary — and she’s able to hold space for both her feelings of betrayal and the impossible nature of the situation, and still love them both simultaneously.

As always with this series, there is so much to take away:

People are so layered and complex, and life is complicated. We are, by definition, paradoxes — capable of behaving in sometimes polar opposite ways. It’s essential to be careful when making black-and-white judgments. We all work with the information we have, and so often that information is incomplete.

Prejudice and assumption are central continuing themes in the series. Characters get to know others who challenge their preconceptions. While certain aspects of the picture are sometimes accurate, they’re not usually quite as previously thought — or at least not as straightforward.

The Vasfian characters in particular are shown projecting and making assumptions — Reiya’s mother and grandmother judge Matthew harshly based on their prejudice and only knowing that he estranged himself from his family, not the rest of the picture. This connects to the broader theme that you cannot judge people based on things they cannot control. The Vasfians condemn Kato for what his mother did. They refuse to see him as a person, only as a product. Matthew, by contrast, understands that Reiya is not her mother or grandmother, and that their actions say nothing about Reiya’s character. It’s Reiya who still needs to learn that herself.

There is also the idea of making assumptions about someone based solely on their current position. Just because someone seems to have it all now doesn’t mean they haven’t struggled on the way there — and sometimes, they still don’t have exactly what you think they do.

____________________________________

“It seems like you’ve learned plenty. You faced Jacques like a competent leader.” ‘If I were competent, I wouldn’t have needed your help.”

Everyone, no matter how competent at what they do, needs to work with others sometimes.

Favorite Quotations:
• His headache pounded worse than a hammer to the skull.
• “I had a best friend I thought I knew well, but now I know he kept many secrets. Maybe because I never gave him a chance to talk.” [...] “Why are we talking about Aelfric?” “Because I never gave Aliwyn a chance to explain herself, either. I can’t assume I know the truth about her.”
• He wanted silence, but she couldn’t give him silence.
• Her jumbled thoughts could scarcely put together the words for a prayer, one that sounded like a scream for help. She had to be on this ship for a reason. There must be a way forward. She just couldn’t see it.
• “I have faith that the Almighty One knows what He is doing.” Toby’s brows lifted. How was he going to respond to this? His gaze seemed to look past her and into something unseen, and Aliwyn’s chin trembled. Finally, he turned back to her with a smile she hadn’t seen since that morning. “I hope you’ll understand that fighting is sometimes necessary, but you’re right[...] The battle has always belonged to Him.”
• Matthew blinked away the haze in his eyes. As Mils’ lowered head entered his peripheral view, he lifted Kato against his chest and rubbed his back. Had Aelfric been born looking like Kato, with red hair, they would never have spoken. A colossal mistake. It was too late to do anything for Aelfric, but not for the person he’d just saved.
• “But we all do bad things.” Emma frowned. “And you just did worse things.”
• “I’m not Jacques. I want to work with you. But that’s hard to do when you lock me in a cage. If your mother were absent, would you still lock me inside?”
• “Everyone fears something.” Reiya kept her hand on [Matthew’s] shoulder. “This is different. Even climbing the stairs is difficult. Reiya clapped him on the back. “But I’ve seen you climb stairs alone. All soldiers are afraid of something. The courageous ones fight all the same.” She paused, meeting his gaze. “It’s all right to be afraid.”
• Maybe, finally, she understood what Aelfric had felt when he’d left home for the last time, that reckless determination to save one person. Maybe it was called love.
Don’t resort to violence unless you have exhausted all means of peaceful negotiation.
• She had for so long avoided battles for fear of dying, for fear of taking a life. But there existed evil that must be faced.
• “The hardest battles are fought without weapons[.]”
• “No,” Matthew muttered. “He won’t get to. Tobias dies first.” “Oh, stop being a nuisance, will you?” A voice rang out from overhead. “I decide if he lives or dies.”
• “I…I remember how Aelfric remained our friend till the end.” The turnip light flickered in Matthew’s damp eyes. Aliwyn braced her knees as he whispered, “I think that means he forgave us, even if he had to forgive us every day. And he wouldn’t want us drowning in guilt.”
• “Forgiving yourself is often the hardest part, but tomorrow needs you more than yesterday.”

Traitor’s Heart by Kyrie Wang is everything I want from a sequel: bigger stakes, deeper characters, and a world that feels like it’s expanding with every page.

I’ll be honest, I struggled with the first book because of the main character. Aliwyn came across as selfish and terrified, but when the author reached out and explained that her character arc is the point, that we’re MEANT to see her grow from that place, I was intrigued enough to continue as an ARC reader. And I’m SO GLAD that I did!

This second installment is intense, complex, and fascinating. The characters are far from perfect, but their choices always make sense within the messy web of politics, rebellion, and survival. Aliwyn still feels like a regular person caught in extraordinary circumstances, and that “ordinary in the midst of chaos” quality makes her arc compelling. She has some serious growth here. Matthew’s POV, though, surprised me most of all; I found myself completely invested in his journey, his shifting loyalties, and the way his path intersects with Aliwyn’s. I really disliked him most of all in the last book, so that was pretty surprising. His chapters enriched the entire story and gave me a much better scope of the conflict. And HE grows even more than Aliwyn, I think.

The historical feel is another strength. It’s low fantasy, but it reads like meticulously researched historical fiction with just enough of a fantastical edge. The action sequences are riveting, the political intrigue is layered, and the turmoil feels real. It’s the kind of story where you can see every character’s motivations clearly, even when they’re at odds. The writing itself flows beautifully, striking a balance between grounded detail and intensity. This is one of those sequels that makes the entire series click into place for me. I can see the vision, and I’m invested.

Thank you so much to the author for the complimentary pre-released copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

An exhilarating adventure from start to finish.

Traitor's Heart is book two of the Enemy's Keeper series by Kyrie Wang, and without a doubt, Kyrie Wang's best book to date.
I very quickly fell in love with this series. The idea of a medieval world where Vikings, Celts, and knights battle for control over gunpowder, mixed with Wang's incredible ability for storytelling, makes this one of my favourite series of all time. *Chefs Kiss*
In Traitor's Heart, we get to see Matthew's POV and Toby's POV, which was a refreshing change from book one. In Traitor's Heart, I feel that each of the characters goes through a change, and we see the character arc that they go through. Aliwyn especially transforms into a different, more confident, and stronger woman, which I absolutely adored. At the beginning of the book, I would turn my nose up at a certain character whom I disliked, but slowly, Kyrie Wang gave them another side, and gave us a new outlook on them. 465 pages later: They are my favorite character.

The action and the battles in Traitor's Heart were phenomenal. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book, and the further I got into the book, the less I could sit still. The last one hundred pages were nearly impossible to put down. I cannot wait to read what Kyrie Wang has planned for book three.

Favourite Quote:
"Sometimes you just need one person who believes in you to push onward. For me, that person was you."

This book took me longer to read because of personal circumstances. My work schedule has been so busy over the last month to the point where I have been almost unable to read at all!!

However, I can now truly say that it is once again an extremely well written and intense addition to the series. At this point, I very much look forward to hearing this one again once it is released on audiobook — and then also for the continuation of the series as we find out more about Matthew and Reiya, Aliwyn and Toby, as well as so many other supporting characters.

Be prepared for violence, and deep revelations of each character, as well as much soul-searching and continued revelations of secrets. I keep wondering how all of this will turn out.

I guess we will all be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series as Miss Kyrie Wang brings more revelations, and hopefully conclusions to some of the mysteries.

This was a solid four+ stars for me!

I received an early ARC copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

Traitor’s Heart is a thrilling addition to the series. Matthew is growing closer to Reiya while fighting to “rescue” Aliwyn in honor of Aelfric’s memory. Ali is struggling to either take down the ship she’s on before it gets into the wrong hands or convince Toby, rebel leader, to do it for her and run away together. All sides of the equation battle rising feelings they don’t know what to do with. And when Toby is captured as a rebel to be taken to the gallows, can Ali save him? Will anyone make it out on top, or is everything too far gone?

Wow!! This continues the story perfectly and has so much depth of the tale that I’ve loved from the start. The ending has me so ecstatic for the next book but I will settle for loving these first books for now. What a read. I am in love with Ali and her story as well as the multiple romances going on underneath the main plot. A huge recommend from me for any fantasy readers out there!

Whew… reading this book was like running a marathon. 😅 It was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be, so it took me a lot longer to read it. However, it was an exciting book to read. I enjoyed reading the different point of views so that I could know what they were thinking. The plot had several twists which made it exciting. While I read through the first 2/3 of the book slowly, I sped through the end. So much happened near the end that I couldn’t put it down without finding out what happened. I definitely recommend reading this to find out more about Tobias, Aliwyn, Matthew, and others. The first book should be read first to truly understand the plot and characters. It was such an enjoyable read. 🙂

I received this as an ARC book; however, the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Where to even start?? This book was so full of unexpected feels, and emotion tugging situations. The characters keep finding themselves in impossible situations due to the wider world. I liked Matthew in book 1, but book two made me really fall and hope for Toby’s redemption. That doesn’t mean I stopped liking Matthew. He really has moments of becoming more of a man in this book! I love his honestly with himself that he leans into in the latter half of the book.

Gah, these characters… to top it all off, I’m not that into historical fiction! Or at least I didn’t think so! I read the ARC of book two very eagerly! Keep up the great work!!

Excellent. From the beginning, when we get a very useful recap of the 1st book. The story flows effortlessly with great detail and a female lead that can take on the whole world and still win. The character growth from the first book to this one, you can't help but love every aspect of it. Very fast-paced. Never a dull moment. You are riding high from the very beginning. I had a very hard time putting this one down.

Great read for those into medieval aspects. Clean Romance. With a writing style that keeps you turning the page.

Beta Review.
I really enjoyed getting to learn more about these characters and this world! I can't wait to read the 3rd book! I wasn't a big fan of Matthew at the beginning of this book but as I watched him grow and change he quickly became one of my favorite characters. Kyrie Wang did a great job with the character development.

Well this book really took me by surprise. I’m normally a fantasy / historical fiction girl I’m not used to both being merged together but I was extremely surprised. It was so so good. The world building was massive and really intricate. I really couldn’t get enough of it. I loved the fact that the vikings and the Norman’s were involved in this book. Thank you so much for the chance to read a fantastic book

Get your tissues ready

Another amazing addition to the Enemy's Keeper series, but your heart may never recover! Keep the tissues handy and maybe don't plan to read in a public place 😬

This book is the second in a series by Kyrie Wang. It continues the story of Toby, Matthew, Aliwyn, and other key players. It is a coming of age story set in the late 1000's after the Norman conquest of England. With a story including rebels and loyalists as well as some who may or may not be as loyal to the cause they are supposedly fighting for these young men and women are thrust into situations most adults would have trouble navigating. It is a good read for young adults but there are historical inaccuracies the writer acknowledges up front. Enjoy.
I have received an ARC (advance reader copy) of the book in return for an honest review.

I was privileged to read the beta version of this incredible series, then the "tweaked" version and now I'm reading the ARC version and I'm amazed at how much more flavoursome it is through every "reread". Each time I read it, I discover something new, each time I read it, the characters appeal to me more and more, each time I read it, I fall into this world, I fall for all the characters, again, loving them even more, understanding them on a more intimate level. Each time I read it, the characters, the plot, the storytelling, stands out brighter than stars on a very dark sky and I get to see them shine in their full glory! I fell under this author's spell when I read book 1, Healer's Blade and good golly is this a read and series I HIGHLY recommend! Why? Well.... this author elevated the stakes, she produced a read that was compulsive reading, with characters that are so real, a story so intricate and interwoven with historical facts, building up, block by block into a riveting read, yeah, suffice to say, BRILLIANT!!!

I loved the whole dilemma the main characters had, it was feasible, it was real. I loved how they chipped away at their prejudice and came out stronger for it. I loved how realistic it was when they faced the truth, like Toby did for Edward, his clinging on to the Ed he knew and the hope he had that Ed would magically revert to his "old self" was beautiful, heartfelt. I came undone when Matthew read THAT letter! OMG! His emotions translated and erupted from the pages, so incredibly emotional! I really love the growth in Matthew, his disgust at what he was tasked to do by his superior, because, even though he acknowledges the rebels must be stopped by any means, he's honourable, a tad prejudice until he spends time with the Vasfians, seeing a different side than the propaganda fed to him, leads to his acknowledgement that people are people, no matter their "race" I love that he feels remorse but geez, the Vasfians are something else! Especially grandma dearest! Geez do I NOT like her, nor her daughter.... although, I did adore Domilo, he's a sassy young 'un, full of youthful indignation and self righteousness.

I can say this emphatically, I loved how Kyrie built up the story, I've already mentioned that I adore both Toby and Matthew and their growth is superb. It's so cool to see characters that are fallible, real, flawed and, dispute that, do the best with what they have, realising bias has no real footing in the truth, overcoming immense obstacles. As is Aliwyn's. She went from a frightened girl to one who takes a stand, albeit impulsively, but that's her character! Aliwyn is the most impetuous young lady! She vacillates between feeling helpless and then plunging headlong into danger, feet first! No, that's not a contradiction, she's rash in her decisions. Truth, lies, half-truths, they muddy the waters so much, which leads to presumptions, which leads to false accusations, which culminates in violence..."Absolute power corrupts absolutely"

I've adored Reiya from when I first met her and her metamorphosis is gorgeous, I got a giggle or two at how she was trying to hide the green eyed monster, that was, but she's so complex, she keeps this facade up, hiding her true self. I felt the plot progressed smoothly and, like Hansel and Gretel, the crumbs Kyrie dispersed led me to a fabulous read. The pacing was cool, even though it's not fast paced, it's a steady pace that allows me to take it all in, feel it, see it. I thought it was exceptionally well paced. I loved that the villains were proper villains, even though she alluded to "some" deserve redemption, I ain't so sure 🤣 But I STILL dislike Abithi and Namanti! And I do love Kato and Domilo. Kato is probably the most complex of all the characters, Ms Wang gave him a special extra twist. He and Reiya are two of my very favourite characters, I feel them in my soul. Oh and there's Mils, the donkey, yes... donkey, ultra cool, protective, just amazing!

Each of the characters felt real, I knew exactly who they were. So, whatever anyone else might say, I enjoyed this story a lot! The emotional turmoil and tug on MY emotions was more in this book than Healer's Blade, on a par with Thief's Keeper. This author's storytelling is unique and beautifully rounded. I LOVE how both Matthew and Toby turned around, I LOVE how the author "got them to see" through the noise and the lies! I love love love that neither carried out what they originally wanted, she drew out their humanity superbly! As Aliwyn says, "Sometimes you just need one person to believe in you to push onwards".

The English, the Normans, the Danes, Rebels, Kingsmen and rebellions, right and the righteous vs the unscrupulous, coalesce in a magnificent read, richly spead out but who's to say which party is in the right and which is in the wrong? In an historical drama such as this, the lines are so blurred, it's impossible to make them out clearly, it's impossible not to have understanding for both sides. And that's the ugly truth of any conflict, it's all very subjective, it's all in assumptions, presumptions and belief that the other party is at fault. Confusion, mayhem, split loyalties, false truths, tentative hopes, and earth shattering consequences! There's a common thread throughout this book and series, a larger than life personna, now deceased, who had and continues to have an impact on all the people he's crossed paths with, which is astounding. Aelfric is very much alive in the memories of all the characters, his essence has left a lasting, indelible mark. The author "brought" him in, projecting his influence and braided him into the very fabric of the story, superbly. In fact, this full cast is exceptional, Emma, Evelyn, Zel, Edward (even though he's despicable) all painted a different colour, all easily distinguishable, all with flaws, some with regrets but all with their own aspirations. Although this is far from a romance read, there is a fledgeling or two romance brewing, which hit all the "awww" feelings in me. But it's the ending that got my pulse spiking the most, THAT battle, THAT ending was a mind spin!

So...after my 3rd "sweep" through, I can emphatically say, the nuances stand out more, the emotional turmoil affected me more, Mathew affected me more, I was completely caught up in his pain, his anxiety, his insecurities, his internal struggles. Toby got my knickers more twisted than an intricate sailor's knot, my heart tore in two when he discovers the truth, the betrayal. Mathew and Toby, so different yet so much alike might be on opposing sides but both try to do "the right thing", both were stunned by their respective fathers, both had major internal struggles, both loyal to a fault. Reiya is more difficult to "fit a mold", Reiya is so conditioned to "do the right thing", to protect and serve her people, leaves no place for questioning whether it's right or wrong and boy did I do a happy dance when she saw through the noise, and her true character came to the fore. And Ali, well...she in turn vexed me, delighted me, frustrated me and ultimately, she just became like my little sister! Awesome read! You REALLY need to read this... You'll be just as impressed with this author as I am!

This is an excellent book, and I can’t wait to read it again.
A series gets more difficult with each entry, as the cast and setting expand and there is more to keep track of, more for a reader to care about, but Traitor’s Heart is an excellent sequel to Healer’s Blade. Not only do we get to follow along with Aliwyn as she continues to be torn between competing alliances, but we meet Matthew, and more importantly, Domilo!
(Okay, Domilo is a minor character, but I loved him, and he is one of the characters I’m excited to see again when I re-read this book).
Aliwyn’s journey and the complex struggle she has with Toby as the two struggle to navigate not just their relationship with each other but their relationships with their pasts, their families, and more, is every bit as compelling and heart wrenching as I’ve come to expect from Wang’s stories.
However, Matthew’s journey through the book is an exciting addition, and his interactions with the character of Reiya and the Vasfians provided a thrilling counter balance to Aliwyn and Toby.
With all three characters on a collision course, literally from page one, the tension builds steadily as each victory for one is nearly a setback for the other two.

There are a couple of things that, as I mentioned in a previous review, I really enjoy about how these stories are structured. First, Wang manages the tension beautifully, lifting to pull you along and drive the characters, then lowering it for you to catch your breath and take a moment to sit in this version of 11th Century England. While I enjoy a thriller as much as some people, I appreciate being able to move through the story without feeling like I’m being forced to sprint from cover to cover.
Second, while there are villains in this, and other stories, a lot of the conflicts come from the realities the characters find themselves in. Complicated histories, loyalties, and backgrounds create conflicts that cannot all be solved with everyone happily getting along. There is real pain, real regret, real anguish because of actions people take, and it is this that often drives much of the drama.
Third, I really enjoyed the ending. It is a delicate balance to wrap up one part of a series in a way that allows it be complete while still leaving a little more for the next book, and it is one that I felt was handled perfectly with this one.

If you enjoy stepping back in time with an alternative twist, if you enjoy good characters, rich setting, and getting to walk alongside characters as they struggle to overcome their own wounds as much as their foes, then this is one you will enjoy.
And I can’t wait to read it again.
