Surviving the Rachel

Rate this book
Bree Logan is ready to start her post-college life, but when she’s dumped by The One, unable to land a professional job, and has to move back in with her parents, she doesn’t think things can get worse until she ends up with her hair chopped into The Rachel, the infamous haircut made famous by the show Friends. Which is not good since it’s no longer 1994. But sometimes you have to go through challenges to get what you really need, and for Bree, could that include a different career and a romance with Jack Chelten, the boy-next-door?

Hard to believe, but I am nearly speechless after stumbling my way back to reality, grinning like a Cheshire cat. Aven Ellis, you are on my list of authors who could write a grocery list and I would beg to read it! You know that growing TBR pile we ALL have? Climb up and place Surviving the Rachel at the very top, where this gem belongs!

Get ready to sigh, bite your nails, role your eyes and laugh and then laugh some more! Romance has never been so romantically lovable when one down-on-her-luck woman must (ack!) go back to Mom and Dad’s to regroup, re-employ and repair her broken heart. As if fate isn’t kicking her butt enough, the fresh start Bree is looking to make turns into a disaster when she decides a “do” is in order, what she didn’t expect was to walk out looking like a Rachel wanna be, circa 1990ish. Sure, she loves the “Friends” sitcom, she is a fanatic, but her hair is no longer her crowning glory. (And before you say, the difference between a good cut and a bad one is two weeks, I’m not so sure Bree would listen, can you say strong-willed?) Okay, beyond that little joke from Fate, her mother is playing cupid, and offering Bree up to the two brothers who have just moved in next door. But wait! There’s more! Bree’s mother’s little pooch has decided that, while Bree is meeting one of the brothers, it must pee on the guy’s floor. Ah, that Fate, what a jokester, or, have Fate and Cupid gotten together to stitch two broken hearts back together as one?

Jack is the older, more serious brother, Mom is pushing the younger, outgoing ladies’ man. But Bree’s heart knows what she wants and Jack is definitely on the menu! Being the nice guy he is, Jack even helps Bree find the job of her dreams, but it is up to her to hold on to it. So what’s the problem? They have the attraction, the same quirky tastes in just about everything, but Jack suffers from “Nice Guy” syndrome. The woman he thought he wanted to spend his life with, dumped him years back and he has never recovered, and he blames the saying, “Nice Guys Finish Last.” Bree’s had her fill of bad boys, now she wants a man. How does she convince Jack she is the woman for him, not a ghost from the past?

Leave it to Aven Ellis to make life’s disasters and heartaches into a humorous and heart-warming romance while creating characters that you want to live next door to! Bree is a delight, witty, strong, with some baggage, yes, but when cut loose, she becomes the perfect role model for brainy women everywhere. Jack, geez, he is just about perfect, himself, easy-going, generous with his laughter, his willingness to help, support and be a friend, and lugging his own past around like a monkey on his back. Let’s just say you can’t choose your family, good or bad, but they played their parts well!

Okay, so I wasn’t speechless, my condensed version: Just read it! Surviving the Rachel Shines like a jar full of fireflies!

Aven Ellis has done it again. What a wonderful book. Bree is an amazing MC. She's smart, funny, determined and secretly a hopeless romantic. The connection with Jack is there from the start, but I loved how Bree still had her own goals in the story, beside her love interest. She finally has a chance to prove herself professionally and I loved how Aven showed us that side of her. And Jack... Well, he fits her just perfectly, doesn't he? Their instant connection just makes you fall in love, not just with them or their relationship, but with the idea of love.
There's just so much romance in this book but what makes it so special, is that these two characters really respected each other. It's not just about passion or attraction (although Jack sounds like thé most gorgeous man) - they just fit. Perfect couple
Another fabulous aspect of this novel is the Friends references. For a Friends-freak like me, this was heaven. I loved how Jack and Bree had this in common, but even more importantly: it showed that they have a great sense of humor and they can not only be romantic together but FUN as well. VERY important in a relationship, and again, I love Aven for showing these different sides of them as individuals AND as a couple.
Loved everything about this book. Read it. NOW.

I feel like a parrot saying this as I’ve said it on the blog before.  But when you want romantic, feel-good feels; Aven Ellis is the author you need to turn to.

First Line of Surviving the Rachel by Aven Ellis:
“Drastic times call for drastic measures.”

My Thoughts on Surviving the Rachel by Aven Ellis:
I started the book with a smile and I finished the book with a smile and that is pretty much what happens me every time I read one of Aven’s books.  She has a knack for capturing thoroughly modern characters and putting them into real life situations which just makes it very easy to connect with her books.

The main character Bree has graduated with honours from University but she just can’t get a break in her chosen field.  She is qualified but needs to find a company willing to take a chance on her lack of experience.  I think this is such a relatable scenario for a character to be in and I immediately felt her disillusionment with life.  And that’s not all; she has also broken up with her boyfriend and moved back home temporarily.  But worst of all, a hairdresser has given her a Rachel haircut!

So basically everything is just a little bit crap.  But I know Aven and I knew she would have a fantastic male character lined up for Bree.  And of course I was right!  Bree and Jack have a lovely chemistry from their first meeting and I love the relationship that they develop.  I love their mature attitude and the way they talk honestly to each other about the various problems that raise their head.

I feel like these characters complete each other.  Which is such a cheesy thing to say and think but they just encourage each other so much and each inspires growth in the other.  So I don’t care how cheesy it is, I’m saying it!

If I were to describe this book, I’d say it’s a gentle story.  It’s not over-dramatic; it’s just an easy flowing, romantic book with some juicy bits, some funny bits and lots to keep your attention.  The romance is a swoon fest and I really felt the connection between the characters.  It also didn’t feel insta-lovey even though it happened quite fast and I think the reason I felt this was that it was obvious just what a good match they were.

In addition, I also loved how fleshed out their friends and family were, they have an important presence in the book and I enjoyed that.  Your relationship with your parents when you are an adult changes and I loved that the book captured this.

Overall another charming book from Aven and just perfect for when you want a little break from all the complexities of real life.

Who should read Surviving the Rachel by Aven Ellis?
I’d recommend this book to you if you like New Adult style books that aren’t over explicit, that have cute characters and that have an emotionally charged romance.  If you’ve enjoyed previous books by Aven Ellis then I think you’ll also enjoy this one.  Fans of authors such as Sophie Kinsella and Rachel Harris should also appreciate it.

My Review
If you are looking for a feel good romance that leaves you with a smile and a sigh then look no further than author Aven Ellis's books.

Surviving the Rachel is funny, sigh worthy, and leaves you with that happily ever after smile at the end.

My notes while reading Surviving the Rachel

I love that the main character points out the “red flags” also known as the “guys you should run from.

The main character, Bree, decides that a new haircut is just what she needs to “start over” so she calls a modern, hip, downtown Chicago salon.

“Fringe Chic Spa & Salon, how can I help you?” says an utterly bored-sounding woman. “Erm, yes, I’m calling to see if it is possible to get a haircut today?” I ask hopefully. “Frederic is book solid for months. So are Javier and Orlando,” she says as I hear keystrokes on her keyboard. “But you can have an appointment with Marcoloa if you can get here in one hour.” - SURVIVING THE RACHEL BY AVEN ELLIS

Raise your hands if you’re screaming, “just say NO”, to the character right now.  I’ve had many bad haircuts that started with a phone call just like that. Thus begins, Surviving the Rachel.

You will laugh, sympathize, and fall in love with Bree as she navigates the many changes that life brings her way.

My recommendation—If you are a Hallmark channel sappy romance movie lover then you should pick up one or all of Aven Ellis’s books. I've read all of her books in the past year, my favorite is Waiting for Prince Harry, but I loved them all.

Aven's books are available on Amazon and at this time is part of the Kindle Unlimited program. Book covers are clickable and linked to Amazon

In true Becca's Books' fashion, I'm going to begin this review by saying a very special thank you to the fantastic author Aven Ellis, for providing me with a copy of her gorgeous latest release Surviving the Rachel. Sadly, it's been a while since I've read one of Aven's books, and I so missed her unique style and engaging, lovable characters. Back in 2014, I had the pleasure of reading Connectivity (my review is here!) and Waiting for Prince Harry (my review is here!), both of which I absolutely adored! And so, I could not wait to finally dive into another of Aven's books, after spending such a long time away. So, Aven, THANK YOU for kindly providing me with a copy to review, you are a star!

I won't lie. When my blogger buddies began reading Surviving the Rachel back during the publication date in December, I was incredibly curious as to what the title meant. I am a firm Friends lover, owning a boxset of every single episode and knowing most of them off by heart, but I did not know that there was actually a hairstyle known as 'The Rachel'! After googling it and finding an image, I was then able to picture Aven's heroine Breeanna Logan perfectly. Once I realised what the title meant, everything fell into place in my mind, and I bloody loved it! The framework of Surviving the Rachel is built upon this hairstyle, and the fact that when Breeanna Logan walks into the hairdressers, and then steps back out as a new woman (with The Rachel!), everything changes. At first, Breennna felt that her world was coming to an end, but in fact, quite the opposite was about to happen!

When Aven introduced me to her heroine Bree, I loved her instantly. She was given a past that was a lot less than perfect, and I always find myself drawn to these characters, the ones that have had a hell of a lot to deal with, yet still manage to make me smile! Unable to find the job that she graduated for and being bailed on by her ex-boyfriend, Bree had no choice but to head back home with her parents. Not the ideal situation of course, but desperate times call for desperate measures! The very first time we meet Bree, she's feeling that it's time to take action, and in Bree's case, that's a haircut! Written in first person, and from Bree's point of view, Aven allows us to read every little thought that goes through Bree's pretty head. It's obvious from the beginning that Bree isn't the type of girl to sit and mope about her dire circumstances. I became aware of a fierce determination in Bree's character, to go out there and get what she wanted, and I was SO ready to cheer her on. One thing that became apparent to me once I'd finished reading, was how far Bree had managed to come. In the beginning, she had no idea what she was doing or where she was going, but by the end of it... Well, I won't ruin it for you! Breeanna was genuine, down-to-earth, and just so easy to connect with. Of course, Bree doesn't come as a one-woman package! Moving back home means that she's living with her parents once more, and that adorable little set-up includes her mother's yappy toy Pomeranian Diva, who just happens to the very reason that things begin to look up for Bree! I loved the warm, cosy atmosphere that enveloped me whenever Bree was at home. There was such a heartwarming, family feel, and Bree's mother made me giggle repeatedly, especially regarding Diva's lifestyle and care routine! (Trust me, you will laugh out loud!) Not only do Breeanna's parents appear in the story, but there are also characters from Aven's previous books included too, AND IT MADE ME SMILE SO MUCH! This includes the social platform which we're first made aware of in Aven's book Connectivity! Bree had a great circle of friends, all of whom added a pleasant tone of friendship and happiness to the plot which warmed me right the way through!

Of course, wherever there's a heroine, you can usually find a hero. and in Surviving the Rachel, that hero is Jack Chelten, also known as the boy next door. Before Jack even makes an appearance in the plot, we're finding out about him from Bree's mother, who is definitely eager to set Bree up with Eric, the younger brother! But (and I LOVED this part), it's not Eric who Bree falls for, but Jack. Let me tell you readers, if you're into bad boys then Jack probably won't be the kind of guy for you, but if a true gentleman is what you like, then look no further. Aven created the ultimate Mr Nice Guy with Jack Chelten. I'm talking the kind of guy who holds open doors, pulls out seats, calls you beautiful and who isn't dying to take it to the bedroom. Aven's descriptions of Jack created such an attractive, well-mannered man in my mind, with his reddish-brown hair and navy blue eyes, and I fell for him exactly when Bree did. Despite Bree being determined in not wanting to get tangled up in a relationship, those walls come tumbling down, and she's charmed by him immediately, and I do not blame her in the slightest!

Ultimately, when Bree meets Jack, Surviving the Rachel truly takes off, and it was a romantic whirlwind where Breeanna Logan realises that she has to get through the bad stuff to get to the really, really good stuff. I adored the message behind Aven's writing. It was moving, incredibly sweet and made me realise that we all need to take the bad with the good, and in Breeanna's case, the hairstyle that she absolutely hated turned out to be a very important part in her beautifully written story. The ups and downs of life, love, careers, and every tiny incredible thing in-between. You will fall in love with not only with Mr Jack Chelten, but with the fantastic Chicago setting, the dramas, and the downright delectable heartfelt dialogue that moved me almost constantly.

Becca's Books is rating Surviving the Rachel by Aven Ellis with FIVE GORGEOUS CUPCAKES! I fell head over heels with Aven's stories last year, and now I am, once again, hopelessly head over heels in love with Surviving the Rachel. It was magnificent, and I cannot wait to read more from Aven! I really, truly can't!

*Book provided by the author in exchange of an honest review*

Here it is, the next Aven Ellis beauty!!!! Thanks you Aven for including my in this journey, it has been amazing so far and I’m looking forward to more ;)
Instead of coming out next February, it’s released now, which is awesome!!

The cover is stunning!!!

Bree Logan lives back at home with her parents. Her boyfriend Alex broke up with her and she is trying to find a job. After graduating from University in Arizona, it’s finally time to start the real life, but how?!

The fresh start starts with a new haircut, with “The Rachel”, and then everything is about to change in her life…

Bree struggles to find a job and I know top well, what that means. I had to apply and fight for a long time, until the right one came along. The waiting was worth it, but I had a hard time… That’s why I can relate to Bree so well and it seems that we are similar in other ways as well. She is passionate, confident, smart and has a big heart.

Then she meets Jack Chelten, the boy next door. He is garding has grandparent’s house. The way the meet for the first time is funny and sweet and it includes a dog ;) They hit it off immediately… At a barbecue we also meet the other characters in the book, which means Bree’s parents and sister Shannon and Jack’s brother Eric, who turns out to be a real jerk, being jealous.

The understanding between Jack and Bree is amazing, he is there for her from the start and seems to be able to read her really well. They get to know each other fast and they really enjoy each other’s company. He can help her with a job and when they practise for the interview and spend time in her garden, it happens. This is one of the sweetest and most beautifully described kisses and romantic scenes ever. Their feelings sparkle and they are surrounded by these fireflies -just magical.

Jack Chelten shows that a really nice guy can be very very sexy. The way he treats her and the way he says things… I fell in love with him as well. He’s so attentive, passionate, smart, caring, sexy, funny and I truly believe that he is the perfect match for Bree. They make each other complete.

Bree takes different opportunities and chances and lets herself be they way she is with Jack. Jack and Bree shared a lot of beautiful moments in this book, each one special and unique. The writing made it all seem so real, authentic and genuine and the most important thing: It came from the heart, include all the emotions and feelings. Thank you Aven for creating such a wonderful and marvellous story.

Eric and all their relatives and also their exs added some misunderstandings and drama to this story, which was really entertaining at times.

I loved the German touch of it all, with Jack being a German translator. It gave the story this extra spark.
And then there are the Friend’s episodes. I love Friends and it was great to read about the different episodes and characters. It showed how important it was for the two of them and it made their bond even stronger.

I was over the moon to read about Avery and Deke as well, our faves from Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista.

The story is unique and full of special moments and glimmering scenes. I was taken into the story immediately, the brilliant writing makes it easy to dive into this world. The storyline is flawless and the characters were perfectly lined, very genuine and relatable.
The places in Chicago were described in a rich and gorgeous way, it makes me wanna go there more and more, especially around autumn and Christmas.

Aven really know how to engage the reader and she finds a way o make each and every single moment in her books memorable and unique. She definitely knows how to touch a heart!!! I couldn’t put this book down, it’s an AMAZING MASTERPIECE!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

I kindly received Surviving the Rachel in exchange of an honest review by the author.

You can recapping Breanna Logan's summer into three major events. First, she gratuated with honours from Universitiy of Arizona. Secondly, she can't find a job in advertising and thirdly, her boyfriend Alex - who she thought was The One - dumped her after graduation and bailed on their appartment in Chicago. With no money in her pockets she has to move back home to her parents. Bree is ready to start over, to do a extreme change in her life. What does a women do when she is ready for such a change? He cuts her hair! So does Bree. She had all her hope that her hairdresser turn her into something hip and fresh but it instead he gave her "The Rachel look" (she looked like Jennifer Aniston when she player Rachel Green in the TV show Friends) which was modern in 1994. Bree wouldn't be Bree she couldn't overcome this crappy situation to come out stronger on the other side. Sometimes you have to go through challenges to get what you really need. Then Bree meets Jack, the boy who lives next door. They become friends and Jack helps Bree to find a new job. The more time they spent together the more it makes Bree think: Are they really just friends?

This is a gorgeous festive read that hooked me from the very first page and made me smile until the very last. As soon as Aven Ellis introduced me to her main characters, Bree and Jack, I adored them.
Aven created Bree and Jack perfectly, so full of character and charm. That's what I truly love about Aven characters, they feel so real, not fictional at all. The female main character are strong, independent, smart and so likeable and so was Bree. And then there is Jack ... I mean, how could I do not love Jack?! He is passionate, caring, understanding, supportiv, loveble and sexy just too good to be true. Both of them were all incredibly developed and believable, and I enjoyed the entire story so, so much.

The writing style in this book is great as ever. The witty is such a natural humour that you can’t help but chuckle away. There are scences you will crack up laughing. I give you one hint: DOGA (Yoga for dogs)! In parts it was also very romantic and heart melting too. Aven did a great job with pacing the book perfectly. Nothing was too slow or too fast. I understand why this story is so important to the author. I was feeling she put in a lot of heart and personality in this book, like the things she is passionate about: cooking, fashion, sport and more.

For Surviving the Rachel Aven created another creative plot. Bree starts working in a high class luxury hotel, the Details Hotel in advertising as a coodinator. You get an great insight by what she is doing as an event originaser specialized in weddings and how stressful it can be. Jack is a german translator for a web company. For me as a german it was very amusing what kind of attitude, sayings
and scences she created throughout the book.

Surviving the Rachel is a great new addition to the chick-lit genre, with the drama, funny moments, rumours and romace it has everything you could want in a chick-lit novel. If I had to sum this book up in three words, they would be marvellous, witty and wonderful.

My Review

Aven Ellis has brought us Connectivity (UK/US), Waiting on Prince Harry (UK/US), Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista (UK/US) and now she brings us SURVIVING THE RACHEL.

This is another witty, comical and heart warming books by one of my all time favourite authors. Again, Aven has brought us a tough minded and strong spirited female lead in the form of Bree Logan.

Nothing screams "I'm a woman ready for a change" than a completely new hairstyle. And if anyone needs a change, it's me, Bree Logan.

Bree has finished her studies on a high and is planning to move to the city with her boyfriend when he suddenly dumps her, leaving her saddled with an apartment she can't afford and no where else to go other than back to her mom and dads to figure out her next move. This is where the fun kicks in...Bree's Mom. She is an overbearing, pushy and far too much of an over-sharer but I still kinda liked her.

So you're sure you want to know all the PR your mom has done on your behalf?

Now right about here, I've gotta throw Diva into the mix. Diva is Bree's mom's happy little dog who likes to get Bree into all sorts of trouble. She is my guilty pleasure!

"So is this," he says, sweeping his arm out toward Diva and her puddle, "how you planned to introduce yourself to me, Breanna Logan?"

The above quote brings me to Jack, Bree's new neighbour. Jack is anything but Bree's type, but for some reason, they seem to have a connection. Even if that connection is built on embarrassment.

The story of Jack and Bree is a journey of self discovery, endings and beginnings and learning to love again. The dialogue is engaging, the story flows beautifully and the characters are so full of life and love that it's impossible not to adore Surviving the Rachel.

"Now that," he says, squeezing my hand in his, "is what I call a silver lining. No. Make it platinum."

Immediate reaction: Such a cute romance! Bree is so relatable and Jack! <3 Literally the boy next door and so amazing. I loved their story!

You guys, I so enjoyed Aven's latest book! Aven always writes strong, career driven, heroines and Surviving the Rachel is no different. Bree Logan is fresh out of college and thought she had everything figured out. However, her job search is going horrifically and her long time boyfriend has just broken up with her. So, now she's back living with her parents and she feels like she hasn't gotten anywhere and is right back where she started. While still searching for something other than her current cocktail waitress job, Bree decides a new hairstyle could jumpstart a new beginning but instead of something trendy, she ends up with the exact Rachel hair cut from the show Friends.

I have to say that I totally identified with Bree at the beginning when she just feels at a loss. She's got her degree. Shouldn't she be able to get a job? She thought she was going to live with her long time boyfriend in an amazing apartment. Nope. Old room in her parent's house. Guys, it is SO hard to find a job. I totally get that helpless feeling! I had to go through job search for months last year and I totally understood exactly how she felt. Anyway, I just liked how realistic Bree's character was! And her character arc of figuring out what she wanted, and being determined enough to keep trying and going after it -- loved that.

In the midst of all this, she meets literally, the boy next door, Jack Chelten. Jack is the ultimate nice boy next door. The one that YOU wish you lived next to! He's sweet, funny, amazing, thoughtful and EVERYTHING. I loved how good he was for Bree. Their relationship was so well balanced and sweet, I just loved! There are many, many swoontastic scenes.

Also, another favorite part -- lots of Friends talk in this book! It just made me smile to see different episodes come up in conversation. If you're a Friends fan, you'll definitely appreciate it!

In Short...

This is another fantastic, sweet romance from Aven! She just writes the best feel-good romance stories with true to life characters and fun story lines! If you like Friends? BONUS! Surviving the Rachel is low on angst and high on all the butterfly swooping happy sensations you'll get from reading this sweet romance!

In the last year, Aven Ellis has become one of my favourite authors. She writes cute well thought stories that make you fall in love every time. And Surviving the Rachel is no exception, it put a smile on my face from the first page to the last. In the story, Bree is a bit lost after finishing college with no prospects for a job and a break up. Going back to her parents' hasn't helped either. But she is quite a positive girl and a hard worker so she is ready to take the world again, she just needs a new image. Here is where we find the first reference to Friends, she ends up with The Rachel, yes, the famous layered haircut that was so in in the nineties and is so out now.

Bree is a very lovable character, it's easy to relate to her and soon enough you find yourself really caring about her and cheering her on her job interview. And then there's Jack, the boy next door. He is a German translator and I loved his dedication to his job, his love for languages and especially his caring attitude. His chemistry with Bree was palpable and you could tell from the beginning that she was his lobster. Every scene with the two of them was a joy to read, even the most simple activity, like picking apples, sounded like the most perfect date.

One thing that always makes Aven's stories so especial are the details. She likes to describe the clothes they are wearing on especial occasions or the smell you can sense where the story is taking place and this makes you feel like you are also part of the story. I always love checking Aven's Pinterest as she always has boards with places, clothes or meals from her stories.

If you are looking for a sweet romantic story with believable lovable characters, this is your story. And if you love Friends, you just can't miss it. It was great to read all the references to the show and see how Bree and Jack teased each other with them.

Did I enjoy this book: I really did! I loved Surviving the Rachel.
Bree is young and trying to find her footing after an unexpected start post-college. After moving home, she finds a friend in her neighbor, Jack. I love their chemistry. They make great friends, and more. There were a few times that I wanted to smack each of them and ask them what they were thinking, or why didn’t they ask the other one very pertinent questions! It was a good frustration. I was invested in their stories, in their lives. I loved watching Bree come into her own in her new profession.

On top of that, there were quite a few swoon-worthy moments, giddy moments, sweet moments. And fireflies! And the end! Wonderful.

Another aspect of Ms. Ellis’s books that I really like is that they are all connected in some way. They all use Connectivity. Avery and Deke from Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista show up in Surviving the Rachel. You feel like you are in the same community. These aren’t sequels or books in the same setting/series. But they all fit together. Oh, and the Friends references were perfect! It is one of my favorite TV series of all time. I’ll say it again: wonderful.

Would I recommend it: Absolutely! Ms. Ellis is a must-read author for me and she should be for you as well!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The story of this book catches ya, if you are a 20 or 30 something; this is a story you know all to well, or at least know someone who has been in this situation; finding yourself as a recent college graduate without a job in your field of study living back in your child bedroom. Follow the story of Jack and his "Rachel".

You always get a full book when you buy an Aven Ellis book. Second, the story is always painted so well, nothing that leaves you wondering hmm? Don't think twice, one click!

Life after college graduation is not at all what twenty-one-year-old Bree Logan expected. Unable to find a professional communications job, dumped by the guy who was THE ONE, and stuck with a pricey city apartment she can’t afford, Bree ends up moving back home with her parents in the suburbs and working as a cocktail waitress at a posh Chicago hotel.

In a desperate attempt to get a fresh start, Bree goes to a hip salon and requests that the first available stylist chop off her long dark hair. Alarmed when the stylist suggests “The Rachel,” after the famous haircut from the show Friends, Bree is hesitant, but decides to go for it when she is assured it will be a “fresh, modern adaptation” of the infamous 90’s cut. Unfortunately for Bree, it turns out to be exactly the same cut, but with horrific heavy bangs added to it. Hideous doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Bree is convinced nothing will ever go right when she meets neighbor Jack Chelten, a twenty-five-year-old German translator. Not that Bree is looking to date anyone, but there's something quirky and intriguing about his freckle-splashed face and blue eyes. And suddenly Bree finds herself seeking out different opportunities and challenges . . . as well as the boy next door.

In her new adult life, Bree learns that sometimes you have to go through crises to get to where you need to be. And if you can survive The Rachel, you can survive anything, right?

Firstly I would like to thank Aven for not only sending me a copy of this book for review but also for letting me be a part of Jack and Bree's story from the beginning. I was extremely lucky to be a beta reader for this book. I got to see Jack and Bree go from a concept to the book that I have just re-read.

Bree is back home after the worst summer of her life. Her boyfriend dumped her, leaving her to pay for their Lincoln Park apartment, she can't seem to even get an interview for the job she wants and to top it all off she now has The Rachel hair cut, great if we were still in the 90's. The last thing Bree want's is to start dating, but then along comes Jack.

Bree is really a strong, clever woman. She's pretty even with The Rachel. She's ambitious and wants a job she can be passionate about.

Jack is a sweet guy who's had his heart broken before. Jack is a good guy but he has a complex about it. He thinks that good guys finish last.

Jack and Bree are made for each other. Every step, every action they have taken has made them the people they are.

Aven has a way of creating wonderful characters that you can't help but fall in love with. Her writing makes you feel like you are right there at the thanksgiving dinners and at the Zoo lights at Lincoln Park Zoo or laughing about doga (yes this is a real thing).

I love every one of Aven's books and this is no exception. I can't wait for more of Aven's books.

Excerpt
Now it’s just me and Jack.

“Firefly,” he says, breaking the silence.

“What?” I laugh.

“Right there, hold on a second,” Jack says, pointing near the pond. “There!”

And I see it. A firefly lights up the darkness for a brief second, a flash of yellow in the dark sky.

“I condemned many fireflies to a sad death in a Cool Whip container in my childhood,” I admit, laughing.

“Did you poke holes on the top?” he teases.

“Of course! I didn’t try to suffocate them on purpose.”
“Murderer.”

“I was not,” I giggle.

“Challenge for you,” Jack says. “Can you still catch one?”

“Absolutely I can.”

“Prove it.”

“Oh, okay, you’re on. First one to catch five wins,” I say, throwing down my own challenge.

“I’ve so got this,” he declares.

So we both get up and begin catching fireflies. We’re laughing and teasing each other and before I know it, I have bested Jack.

“That’s five,” I declare happily, snatching the fifth firefly. I open up my palm to reveal it to him, and then I release it to the night sky.

And in a way, I feel released, too. I’m releasing the negativity about the job search, and I’m starting new tomorrow with Jack’s help. I gaze at his profile, and I know this German-speaking boy next door has something—if not everything-to do with this newfound feeling I have.

He turns and catches me looking at him. We don’t say anything for a moment, and another firefly flashes light between us.

“I guess I should be heading home,” he says softly.

“Okay.”

“So I’ll see you tomorrow for sushi?”

“Yes,” I say, smiling back at him. “And I’ll send you my resume right now.”

Jack nods. “Okay then. I’ll see you tomorrow. And thank you for tonight.”

“I should be thanking you,” I say softly.

He turns and begins walking across the grass. I cross my arms over my chest, his sweatshirt still keeping me warm. Jack suddenly stops and turns to me.

“’Hochzeit mit Hindernissen,’” Jack says.

I begin laughing. “What?”

“The German title for ‘The One with Monica and Chandler’s Wedding,’” Jack says, grinning at me. “That’s one of my favorite Friends episodes.”

Another hit!

First of all I love the title of the story, very clever. The story about the girl next and boy next falling for one another. I like the fact it goes into life after college and how nothing has turned out the way one has hoped, but only to realize it is so much better.

Good read

This is an enjoyable book about two young adults who both had their hearts broken before they found each other. To me Jack is such an endearing character. Bree is skittish about starting another relationship. The character and story building are great.

I probably should have noted that this is a young adult book before I started reading, but nevertheless it was a pretty enjoyable quick read, and I do love FRIENDS. I think the big problem I had with this book was that it was very repetitive. I felt like the main character said to us 'I had to go through what I went through to be where I am today' about a dozen different times. The problem is, we only really got a cursory glance at what she went through, same goes for Jack. The book would have been way more powerful if it had started out several months prior to them meeting and really got down and dirty with their relationships and breakups, where they were in their lives, and the pain they went through. It would have been neat if we got both of their perspectives, then the book could have started just how it did and we see their stories intertwine. It was hard for me to believe her dialogue a lot of the time. I also found it amusing how in detail the kissing was described but describing the sex was off-limits; there again it could be because it's YA. There's a good book in there somewhere for us 30 something's who love FRIENDS that could have been given more depth and more development. Overall it was good read, if you want something you can finish in less than a week and don't have to look up any words.

Thank you to Aven Ellis for sending me a copy of this book for review.

I am a huge fan of Aven Ellis’ writing and get so excited when she releases a new novel. I just cannot get enough of them! This book is just as good as the others and again my love for Aven’s novels has grown. She is such a talented author with the ability to suck you in from the very first page and keep you hooked on her amazing story, detail and characters until the very end.

I felt like I could really connect with Bree, as I think most women my age could, things have gone wrong for her and she thinks there is no way out, and to top if off she has been given the worst of all haircuts ‘The Rachel’. A haircut that was last popular in the early 90’s, Friends fans will know the haircut! I am sure a lot of women, myself included have walked out of the hairdressers thinking their hair has been ruined! Bree makes the best of it though and that’s when I knew I would love her. She is so down to earth, trying to get on with her life and she is just so normal. That's what I love about the women in Aven's novels, none of them are fake, they are all just so normal and lovely that you instantly like them.

Jack was, ahhh, well, what can I say, he is the type of man every girl dreams of, smart, romantic, caring and HOT! As soon as we saw him I knew he was perfect for Bree and I wanted them to be together SO bad! The good thing about their relationship is that they are both kind of in the same situation, which is what seems to draw them to each other, they both need to forget the past and look to the future, and they can help each other do that.
Bree’s parents and their dog Diva added so much humour to the book. Her mum is the classic embarrassing mum that tries to do the best for her daughter, but doesn’t go about it without adding a lot of embarrassment to Bree’s life. You can't help but just laugh along even though you cringe for Bree a lot of the time. They were the perfect addition to the story.

Although Aven’s books follow the same theme, they are all so different and each one gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. She makes you want to be the lead female character and fall in love with the male character.

I loved that Aven mentioned things from her previous novels in this book, Bree was actually in Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista as Avery’s best friend. I loved her brief appearances in the book and it was so good to get to know her much better in Surviving the Rachel and see her life after Alex. Aven makes you remember Bree more by having Avery, Emma, Deacon and Zach from COALPF in this book. I also loved the subtle hints of Waiting for Prince Harry, with the apron Bree’s mum buy’s (which I'm presuming is from Kylie's shop) and the Dallas Demons hockey game which Harrison scores in! It was such a good way to remind readers of her other novels.

If you are looking for a romantic novel that you can’t put down, this is definitely one to pick up!

Well done Aven you have done it again! I can’t read to see what’s next!

When I saw the title of Aven Ellis' new book, Surviving the Rachel, I swear my first thought was "Dear Lord, someone has FINALLY written a story about trying to grow out all of those damn layers!" I mean, I had The Rachel. Let me tell you, it was not flattering on me. The sad reality of it was that it took me over a year to grow out all of those freakin' layers! But I digress...

In Surviving the Rachel, Bree Logan has hit one wall after another. In an attempt to grab some control in her life she decides she's ready for a change. What better way to make a change than book an appointment at an upscale salon and get a fabulous new hair style, right? We've all been there! The fabulous new hairstyle is supposed to be a modern take on The Rachel, but what she ends up with is the old take with lots of bangs. (I hang my head in sympathy because I know just how she felt when she looked into the mirror and saw the end result.) Of course, it isn't until after the Rachel debacle that she meets the 2 hot brothers who live next door. So, here she is with this nightmare of a 'do, a match-making mother and the rest of her insecurities. What happens once the introductions are made and the layers start growing out is an incredibly funny, sweet girl meets the German speaking, freckle-face, blue eyed hotness next door romance. The kind of romance that has you all giggly and swoony, and maybe even wishing it could happen to you.

Aside from the story itself, one of the things I loved about this book is how Aven used a haircut as a metaphor for life. Bree has all kinds of experiences and every time, the thought "well, if I can survive this haircut, I can handle anything" is there keeping things and life from getting too big and out of perspective. I loved it.

Aven, can you hear me? I. LOVE. YOUR. BOOKS!!

And here's why...they are beautifully simple and sweet. I like to read angst, drama and red hot naughtiness as much as the next girl. It's just that sometimes, I need to read something where the story picks me up and takes me along for the ride and the only emotions I feel are butterflies the first time they kiss or the hilarity of some "it could happen to anyone" embarrassing situation. I love when the simplicity of a story leaves room for the intricacies of the characters to say what they mean and be who they are with no distractions. Simple is best! Aven Ellis nails this every time!!

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***

Charming, funny, sweet, cute and romantic are some the words that come to mind once I had finished reading Surviving The Rachel by Aven Ellis. From the first page, I just knew I was going to love this story and I did.

“You have to go through crises to get to where you need to be”

It may not have seemed it at first to Bree Logan, but being dumped by her boyfriend Alex, moving back home and having The Rachel haircut could just be the best thing that has happened to her. Especially when she meet Jack Chelten, the boy next door!!

“He’s like a firefly who has lit up the darkness. And I find myself drawn to his light”

Bree was smart, funny, and kindhearted, and I loved her. Jack was a sweetheart, and such a gentleman, smart, funny, caring and sexy. I love the way things develop between Bree, and Jack are just two people who belong together. There was such a natural feeling between them it wasn’t forced or rushed. They gravitate towards each other and bring out the best in each other.

“There is nothing else to this. Alex is my past, but you are my everything”

“I chose you. I chose you, exactly the way you are”

Loved the storyline such an easy entertaining read, that I read in on sitting about new beginning, taking chances, and finding love again. It was so funny, and I laugh out loud so many times especially at Doga …and it's real as I googled it. Love the references to one of my all time favourite shows friends, and learning a little German.

“Ich Liebe Dich ~ I Love You”

Just like all Aven's female characters I always get the butterflies or in Bree case fireflies in my stomach when reading one of her books, simply because I love the romance. And Aven knows how to write romance stories that leave me with a big smile on my face, and I never get tried of them.

“I knew right then that I just had the last first kiss I’d ever had in my life”

Overall, Surviving The Rachel was a great read with a fun bunch of characters. Love that Avery and Deke from Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista where back. Actually I just love the way Aven connects all her books together in some way. Bree and Jack's story is sweet, cute, and funny. A must read for all you romantics out there.

Surviving the Rachel is the first book by Aven Ellis that I have read. Although I have several of her books on my shelf but it was fate that I started with this one and I am so happy that I did. I absolutely adored this book.

I loved the cover. It is so romantic and attracted me at first glance towards this book. Then the blurb sealed the deal and I picked the book up to read. Both the blurb and the cover are sure to attract the readers towards this book.

This story is about Bree and her adventures or should I say, misadventures in love. She is a hopeless romantic and her love story with the slightly ruffled but incredibly handsome German translator had me sighing, giggling, laughing outright and then rooting for their happily-ever-after. I have to confess that I am a hopeless romantic and so I fully supported Bree in her excursions to find her own fairy tale ending. Her struggle to prove herself and find her own stability in this chaotic world, Aven succeeds in showing us a different side to Bree's character which is both motivating and teaching for the readers. :)

The settings and events of the story are real like and flow beautifully. The characterization is admirably done and I could connect with Bree and enjoyed her journey all through the book. A cuddly, warm and happy romance, I had a great time reading this book.

5 super shiny stars to Surviving the Rachel. I strongly recommend this cute, funny and memorable romance to everyone. Aven has the flair for writing and I loved her writing style. Definitely an author to look out for, I am going to read Aven's other books soon.

I received the book from the tour organizers and the author and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Bree thought her life was going to be perfect after graduating, but now that she has a degree she doesn't feel that confident any longer. Her boyfriend has dumped her, she can't find a job and she's moved back in with her parents, because she didn't have enough money to rent something on her own. To cheer herself up she spends all the money she has left on an expensive haircut at an exclusive salon. Unfortunately the modern version of The Rachel, named after Rachel in friends, isn't a very good style for her. She's feeling so bad about herself, but then she meets Jack. He's living next door, so being back with her parents has also got some advantages. Bree likes him straight away, but is she ready for new love and is Jack? He's been single for a while after a bad relationship. Is it too soon for either of them or will they be able to make it work?

Bree is a bright and sweet girl. She knows she's got what it takes to be great at any job in her field, but she doesn't get the chance to go to an interview. Her confidence is slowly disappearing until she meets Jack. Jack is a very sweet guy and they get along so well. Both of them are sensitive people and they make each other happy. Jack helps Bree with her job search and Bree helps Jack to heal. I loved that. Of course there are obstacles as well and they both have to be strong to survive them.

Aven Ellis's books are sweet, she writes feel-good stories that put a smile on my face the entire time I'm reading. Bree and Jack are such a cute couple and that's what made this book so enjoyable. They do the right thing, they are friendly and kind and I wanted them to be happy so much. They deserved it. That's the magic of any book written by this author. I really like reading about great people who have so much love to give, which makes her stories absolutely wonderful, it works every time.

Bree is the main character in Aven’s fourth novel. She’s just coming out of a break up and is putting her best foot (and dodgy hair cut) forward. I was reading this when I had my own dodgy hair cut so I could totally empathise with Bree. I think her “Rachel” hair cut made me think of a young Jennifer Aniston playing Bree in my mind.

Bree is very easy to like and I think part of this is her self-deprecating nature and her joy of pleasing others. She is a hard worker and the extent of it shows when she starts her new job. I liked being on the learning curve with Bree and always find it interesting to read about a character who has a job in a line of work that’s so different to my own. Aven’s writing is in depth in description and I felt like I could have been in the story alongside Bree.

Aven’s main characters all have one thing in common and that is their down to earth personalities. This love story focuses on the bond between the characters and their common interests and it’s about getting to know the other person and what makes them tick. With all of Aven’s couples I’ve enjoyed seeing them get to know one another and it was no different with Bree and Jack. I enjoyed the Friends quotes and also Jack’s love of all things Germany. I studied German at school so I liked reading the Friends episode titles in German and it added a little extra sparkle to the book for me.

This is a lovely, thoughtful story about learning to overcoming all the obstacles life throws your way.

I love Aven’s writing and I loved seeing a little bit of her personality shining through in the character’s fashion style. I loved the catch up with Avery and Deke from Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista (my favourite of Aven’s books) and I’m very much looking forward to starting The Definition of Icing!

I would like to thank the gorgeous Aven Ellis for sending me a copy of this in exchange for a fair and honest review.

At the beginning of the book Bree is back with her parents in her old room that she had when she was fourteen. Life looks bleak as she is waiting tables to make ends meet, enter Jack Chelten and his brother Eric. Bree’s mum is determined to set her up with Eric as he is the perfect match, deploying what Bree calls strategic placement, stalking Eric and Jack.

Bree books in for a haircut at a hair salon in the centre of the city, persuaded by the stylist to go for Rachel haircut with more bangs she goes with the flow but to be left devastated that it is the Rachel haircut. Getting home her day gets worse when her mum’s dog Diva escapes and dashes across the road into Jack’s living room and decides to leave a calling card. Jack and Bree hit is off straight away.

This is a sweet story of getting back on your feet after being hurt by someone and also losing your job. Aven has me Bree straight away and I identified with everything that she went through, I love her strength of character, how much fun she and quirky she is, but also how vulnerable she is, especially to Eric’s barbs about Jack. I sighed with happiness when Bree and Jack caught fireflies and couldn't stop laughing about Doga… it has to be read or a picture be seen to be believed, Aven really couldn't make it up lol.

Jack is very sweet and lovely, the perfect book boyfriend unfortunately Sherrie called him first.

If you haven’t read any of Aven’s books then you should make this a priority as she writes the sweetest, hottest book boyfriends. I am a huge fan of Aven’s books and I take every opportunity to shout about them to anyone and everyone.

I was super excited when Aven bought out Surviving The Rachel early and i wasn't disappointed, oh my goodness it hit the spot again for me. I simply LOVE the way Aven writes her characters and I find myself literally willing them the happiness that you believe they deserve.
This books main characters are Bree and Jack, both been hurt after the relationships that they thought were the ones for them. Emotionally and certainly financially down on their luck, for Bree, they are bought together when Bree has to return home to live. They find themselves neighbours and Bree's mum has a heart of gold but oh my, is she funny!
A love story of the most simplest kind, generosity of time, passion, kindness, thoughtfulness, decency and love. Two people who are meant to be together, they fit like a two piece broken hearted neckless, that joins together to make a mended heart, if only they can trust to give their lives to each other.
I woke at 4am one morning and had a sneaky read on my kindle, this was not the time to come across *doga* classes, you will need to read yourself to believe the words on the written page but I had to stuff the corner of our duvet into my mouth to suppress my laughter. Bree is a talented, strong young lady and Jack helps her see this. Before you all fall head over heels in love with Jack, HE IS MINE! What a wonderful unassuming man he is, everything my ideal man would be.
Thank you Aven, in more ways than one! Xx

Wow.....if you haven't read anything by Aven Ellis yet, and like incredibly romantic stories (note Romantic, not necessarily full of sex!), with gorgeous sexy leading men that the reader wants to steal off the main character to keep for themselves. then go read this... or any others by this wonderful author.

Bree has had a summer of crisis, she has graduated college but can't get a job in the field she wants, she is dumped by her one and only love to date, and is forced as a result to move out of their Lincoln Park apartment back home with her parents.

As a result Bree decides she needs to change something she can be in control of and goes to a "chic" hairdresser who after establishing that Bree loves Friends, offered to do her an update of the classic "Rachel" cut. What Bree is gets is the original Rachel, but with more bangs, and she isn't happy.

While still mourning her haircut, she chases her dog Diva next door and meets boy next door Jack....

Jack has to be one of the nicest guys I've read about in fiction, and comes across are really sensitive and romantic and a real rock for Bree.

In Surviving the Rachel, we see how Bree grows as a person and in confidence both in a new job and also in her personal life. There is a lot of story in this and I was glad to discover that Bree's best friend was Avery (star of Chronicles of a Lincoln Park Fashionista) and was great to catch up with an existing character.

Loved every moment of this book.

Bree should be on top of the world but she's not. Her boyfriend that she was sure was it broke up with her leaving her to pay for an apartment that she couldn't pay for on her own. Now she's living at home, working at job she hates and has sworn off men. Her mother has plans for her and one of the neighbors. Even though Bree told her not to start anything and let her get back on her feet but her mother is convinced that she's going to like Eric. The thing is she meets Jack first and hes so sweet, and easy to talk to. She doesn't like Eric at all and I can't say I blame her. He may be in his twenties but he's obnoxious.

Eric doesn't like that Bree chose Jack so he keeps filling her head with doubt whenever he can. Bree is worried about the past, both of theirs. Is she a replacement for Amy the girl that got away or is Jack the replacement for the jerk that broke her heart?

I have read everything this author has written. I love her writing style. Her characters are great and real. I feel like they're young and they grow through the book. I loved watching Bree become more of an adult, starting a new job and being in a real relationship. Jack seemed genuine but there was some doubt in him and probably because of Eric. I loved seeing girls from other books by this author and I'm hoping that Emma gets her own book!! *hint hint* If you like fluttery romance books and swoony boys then you'll enjoy this author's work!! Leave her love in the form of a review!!

Bree is out of college and can’t find a job. She just got dumped by her boyfriend and is back living at home. To start fresh, she makes an appointment at a salon to get a new look and ends up walking out of the salon with “The Rachel” haircut from the 90s series, FRIENDS. Bree loves the show FRIENDS, but she did not want to look like one of the main characters from 20 years ago. She is embarrassed and hates it and wants to just go home, but runs into her parents’ next door neighbor, Jack. Jack is sweet and kind and turns out that Bree and he have a lot in common, one of them being loving the show FRIENDS. After a while, Bree starts noticing that the new haircut is not such a burden after all. She notices things changes. One of them being meeting a great guy like Jack, finding a new job, and other things.

My only real complaint was I was Jack had more self-esteem. I am not saying that I expected Jack to be all alpha in the story, but I felt that he had to be reassured all the time which for me would have become tiresome.
This story was sweet and even though a lot of it was predictable, it was still a fun read. Aven Ellis is a great writer. This was a feel good story. Can’t wait for Aven Ellis’ next book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As always, Aven Ellis has outdone herself. The writing was well done, easy to connect with and hilarious, injecting just a bit of sadness in the story to make it not so much a fully happy, sunshine story. But she certainly creates a book once more that makes readers forget their troubles and just laugh. Laughter is the best medicine sometimes and if you're looking for some mixed with a sweet romance, than Aven Ellis' Surviving the Rachel is your perfect next read.

Bree's voice was happy, spunky and witty. And the fact that we don't actually get Jack's perspective allows us to learn about him from other methods. It's a nice change from getting both perspectives(although I really would have liked to know what was going on in Jack's head at times).

And the ending. Definitely a good one. It hurt(not always in a good way) but you still get the sweet, romantic feel that has been throughout the book.

Overall, Aven Ellis' Surviving the Rachel compares well with her other books and is definitely the medicine you need after a horrible day.
