Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop #3

The Stubborn Skill-Grinder In a Time Loop 3: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Having awakened a ground-breaking Celestial-rarity skill at the climax of his fight against the Eldritch Avatar, Orodan's problems have suddenly grown bigger.

Otherworldly attention. The champions of various worlds come seeking to capture him for their own factions.

Worst of all, his tendency towards directly telling everyone about the time loops draws a dangerous sort of attention. That of those related to it.

Facing extra-planar pursuit right from the start of every loop, Orodan must not only rapidly improve against lopsided odds, but also avoid the possibility of a very true death at the hands of those who know how to deal with those like him.

But with a cosmic chase comes the opportunity for cosmic answers. And if he works hard enough, fights zealously enough and dies enough times, he may just have the answer of who put him in this time loop in the first place.

But if he fails, a very true death awaits him.

Truth on one end, true finality on the other, the perfect environment for Orodan to charge into the wall headfirst over and over again.

Book 3 in this fast-paced LitRPG Adventure about Orodan and his progression toward becoming extremely overpowered using a time loop.

The series features a detailed system, loads of skills, varied progression paths, deep worldbuilding, time loop regression, cultivation aspects, and a heroic character you can't help but root for!

DNF 23%.
There's no plot and no relationships. It's devolved to mindless fighting and power-ups. Now that I think about it, that's on brand for this series. Sadly, there needs to be more to carry a series.

A seriously flawed series with an interesting plot. 2.5 star review.

I will preface this review by stating that I really enjoyed the first book of the series, but noted in that review the potential for issues. Apparently, I was right about some of those concerns. Add to that the repetitive and mostly summarized fights, the ridiculous skills that don’t match MCs level for some reason, and many other poor writing choices, and you have deeply flawed series. But its plot is good, and so I can’t say I won’t read the next one.

First things first, I am so tired of the MC’s inner-exposition. Over and over the MC relates to us, the reader, every minor little detail about some culture or world or magic system or whatever, and it’s never once explained where this knowledge comes from. AND it directly contradicts his character of an uneducated country bumpkin who hates books. I come to find these to be too excruciatingly boring to even read, skimming through them. I even walked away from this book for a few days. I just needed a break.

I have also gotten tired of the repetitive way the big fights unfold. MC talks about the sheer level of (insert any magical force or emotion here) bearing down on him. It’s always conveniently the most he’s ever felt, and he always seems like he’s gonna buckle but then remembers who he is and resists. Every. Time. And that’s leads me to the other big problem with this series, the DBZ Effect. The only way for this series to escalate stakes is more power and more powerful opponents. The problem with writing this way is that the immersion gets less and less believable.

Though I appreciate the addition of there only being one looper active at a time and the fact that these admins can theoretically end his loops and give him a true death (also preventing resurrection and all the other myriad back from death shenanigans added to the mountain of lore) to add stakes to the story, it still falls flat because we know he’s gonna win. And if he is always gonna win, what’s the best way to keep it interesting? By mixing it up. So why does it always follow the same patterns? At this point, it’s just more stakes, bigger enemies. Now they can swallow planets and blow up galaxies.

Even the fun aspect of looping is largely gone from this book. The checkpoints are important to maintaining some plot progress but at a huge cost both to the fun of the series and the main character. Imagine having to loop against the enemy transcendents from the first arc but having to start all the way over again each time he failed? Three months between those fights. Easy enough to write it that way from the author’s perspective, but a serious trial of the MCs character and resilience. It makes the stakes of dying months or years into a loop have natural stakes, no need to force it with the always a bigger fish thing this story goes to every single time.

Next issue is the MC’s skill levels. It makes no sense he can fight gods and transcendents as a master or adept in most of his skills. I don’t care if many of the skills are OP, too easy just to have him fighting at near the level of his opponents not so far beneath them. For instance he has some physical skills in the adept range but he’s just as strong as beings who are millions of years old with twice as many levels in their skills? In essence, it makes sense MC’s mythical and celestial skills allow him to punch up to a degree, but it doesn’t make sense all his mundane skills do too.

I think this series one saving grace is the plot. I like the mystery behind what’s going on with the system and eldritch, who started the loops, why they chose MC, and what the goal is. This is probably what will get me to read the next book.

Some other random thoughts:

Basically the author repeated his entire convo from last book with the time god dude despite this being the same continuity of loops. This has happened before, and it’s weird this wasn’t caught in editing.

I like the half dragon character, maybe more than any other, but basically she’s reduced to a voice in the MC’s ear and holding a crystal the MC could just hold himself. Criminally underutilized and essentially just arm candy.

Why is it at the end of the book MC is assuming his death would restart him back to the beginning despite the checkpoints? Did I miss something?

Certain aspects of MCs personality make no sense. Like his cluelessness with women. Clearly, in earlier loops he picked up on vibes from women and cashed those in. But now he’s a total doofus incel with the romantic senses of a junior high kid?

In summary, this series had a lot of potential, but suffers from some seriously poor decision making with the writing on many levels. But… the plot is good, so I’ll probably be back in May when the next book drops. 2.5 stars.

The Stubborn Skill-grinder in a Time Loop book 3 carries on where the last book left off, and it does a pretty good job of advancing the story, more skills learned, of course, many upgraded, getting close to figuring out what this looping is all about, and of course, having some major battles in the process. It is a really good story, at least it is until the last few pages of the book. At that point, I think the author just didn't know where to take it, so kind of just filled in whatever came to mind. It worked, but didn't really make for very good reading, or do much for the story itself either, but that's just my opinion, you are welcome to disagree. I'll probably read the next one, but if it continues in the same vain as the ending of this one, I'm not sure I'll read the one after that. If it returns more to the overall story so far, then it's likely I'll stick with it, but we'll need to wait until May to find out.
In any case, if you've liked the series so far, this book will do a lot for you as far as adding additional background, and solving some of the unresolved threads in the story. So, it's off to read something else for a while. while waiting for the next book in this one.

I have never read a series like this!

I'm not even sure how to describe My feelings of this book... When I picked up the first volume and started reading.I thought the story was moronic , because the protagonist kept stubbornly ignoring everything and dying! I'm somewhat moronic , too , and kept on reading! So glad I did! Somehow, the author took the most unlikely mentality and turned him into a heroic non hero. I can't wait for the next book!

I have officially reached my end with this series. I just got too tired with the non-stop find a new person to fight stuff, and I could not finish the book.
