Bella's dream life living in France and running a B&B ends abruptly with her husband asking for a divorce. Forced to pick up the pieces and rebuild her life, Bella finds herself living and working as "someone else", an alternate identity thanks to some creative licence on her resumé.
Though there are some implausible moments here, this is a truly feel-good, escapist read. There's a dual timeline providing some context to Bella's story, a romance that doesn't take over from the main focus, Bella's journey, and some truly laugh-out-loud "only in France" moments.
Who wouldn’t want to be someone else for a while? A younger version of yourself so you could see what you missed out on when college didn’t work out and you married young and moved to France to chase after your dreams!! Bella was at a crossroads in her life and taking a job in Versailles, as her alter ego, “Isabella” seemed like the right thing to do when she was filling out applications late into the night. Her job at a posh French hotel seemed so extravagant and far removed from her former life as a Bed and Breakfast innkeeper. On top of all that, she was sharing a house with college students who were at least ten years younger than her! Oh my, what had she done? Bella was soon swept up into a daunting schedule consisting of a full day working as a Project Manager, and a long night socializing with her new housemates. That kind of behavior never ends well and she was desperate to come clean with her new friends about who she really was, but why couldn’t she be both women? Bella would always have her memories of her beloved B&B, and now with her new career, she was finally putting herself first, realizing she could do anything if she kept an open mind and a loving heart.
I’ve always enjoyed Gillian Harvey’s books, & her latest is no exception! The French House Share is a great story, well written as always.
The main character is Bella. Bella was only sixteen when her mother died suddenly, a formative event in her young life. As an adult Bella lacked a sense of direction in life, except for her dream of living in France. After she married Pete, they moved to France in pursuit of her dream. Eight years later Pete suddenly asked for a divorce, and her life fell apart as he returned to England leaving Bella to sort out the sale of their house. She is forced to reassess her life, determined to stay in France but finding a job & a place to live proves more difficult than she’d expected. She eventually finds a job in Paris & a place to live in Versailles, but she’s had to resort to lies & half truths to achieve this. She builds a new life for herself, enjoying partying with her younger flatmates although the late nights & hangovers are not conducive to job performance during the day! She panics, finding that the job is more demanding than she’d realised, & that the lies may come back to haunt her. However, she finds unexpected support from Brad, owner of the house where she lives who is a successful businessman. As they work together on her work project they become good friends & there’s a hint of an attraction between them.
The story is told in dual timelines between the present day and past events & relationships that have been formative in Bella's life, a format that worked well for me. I liked Bella more as the story went on; I respected her for the way she reflected on past & present experiences, and realised that there could be more than one way to achieve her dream. Brad became an important friend in this, encouraging her, challenging her to find her way forward, & she felt hopeful for the first time since her mother died. I thought her reflection in the final paragraphs was particularly apt, that “there were different types of change. The change that happened to you, or the change that you drove yourself. Change could be terrifying. But it could also be exciting.” It’s a hopeful & optimistic story about taking opportunities when they come & having a second chance at life.

Bella seems to be living her dream life–living in the French countryside, owning a B&B and putting her past behind. But then her husband Peter asks for divorce and Bella’s life suddenly turn upside down.
Now Bella is forced to find a job which made her to move to Versailles. She starts living in a house with two twenty something old people, Odette and Henri. And she gets a job as a project manager for a small boutique hotel. But here’s the problem–Odette and Henri believe Bella is in her twenties even though Bella is actually in her thirties and she kind of lied on her resume about the job. Her boss, Claudette hands her a big task of impressing a certain hotel critics and will Bella able to do the job? And thinks get complicated when a handsome American man, Brad, who is the landlord of the house she lives in enters into her life.
Let’s start with the atmosphere--reading this book will actually make you feel like you are living in the rural France and Versailles. The descriptions of the places, the cafes and of course the French people in general will actually make you feel like you are living in France.
About the characters…Bella is a sort of complex character–she is a very likable and related heroine–and realistic. Anyone can actually relate to Bella–feeling insecure when she is around her sister Kitty and funny. Brad and Bella would make a perfect couple and the other supporting characters, Odette, Henri, Claudette and Jeanette are supportive and likable.
The storyline–I really enjoyed reading the story. There were funny moments in the book, which make you laugh out loud and there were so many relatable moments in the book as well. The story overall talks about dealing with love, loss and of course second chances. And overall, it was realistic as well. Bella knew she lied on her resume and living with a lie while trying to achieve a success shows how Bella’s character is resilient and courageous. This is not just a typical romance novel but also a chance to turn your life back again after a loss.
Overall, this is a 4.5 star read. I am looking forward to read more books from this author.
It's no secret that we live in a very difficult society where more often than not women, especially in their late thirties, have to prove themselves over and over again, and this is what 'The French House Share' is all about.
Bella, 34 years old, thought she had a great life running her B&B in France together with Pete, her husband of 8 years but, when Pete decides he had enough of that life and leaves Bella unexpectedly, our main characters needs to refocus on reinvent herself.
The job market seems to be more difficult than anticipated (trust me, nobody can relate to that better than I do) and Bella after more than a few sleepless nights and endless applications sent without luck, decides to make her CV more appealing and all of a sudden manages to land a job in Versailles even without the necessary experience and skills. But, she's a resourceful woman and manages to prove to her new boss that sometimes instincts, willingness to work and talent, are far better than academic accreditations. While she navigates in her new position, she also finds herself in a house share with some younger housemates that are somehow convinced she's in her twenties and, although she tries to come clean with them more than once about her age, they just don't believe her!
As the chapters go on, there's an alternate path between now and the past, so we get to know Bella a bit more, and even Pete who, in fact, didn't wake up one day and decided to leave her. The signs were all there, but Bella was a bit too self-centred to notice.
A lot of side characters and love interests in the book (one might argue a bit too many in such a short amount of time or pages) but overall is another nice story of a woman ready to start from scratch when life gets tough. Even if I didn't necessarily agree with all her choices or the lying, I found Bella quite relatable as a character and the story overall pleasant. Also it made me want to visit Versailles next time I'm in France!
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for trusting me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The French House Share is a charming, heartfelt novel about starting over when life takes an unexpected turn. Gillian Harvey captures both the beauty of France and the bittersweet reality of new beginnings with warmth, wit, and emotional depth.
Bella is a wonderfully relatable heroine. Having built her dream life running a rural French B&B, she suddenly finds herself adrift when her marriage collapses. Moving to Versailles and into a chaotic house share is hardly the future she imagined, yet Harvey makes this upheaval feel both poignant and hopeful. The tension between Bella’s desire to belong and her fear of living a lie adds richness to the story, while her interactions with her younger housemates bring humour and heart.
The arrival of Brad, the handsome American landlord, adds a romantic spark, but Harvey wisely keeps the focus on Bella’s journey of rediscovery. This isn’t just a love story—it’s about resilience, identity, and the courage to embrace change even when it feels daunting. The French setting, from the bustle of Versailles to the cozy chaos of the house share, provides a gorgeous backdrop that makes the novel feel escapist and uplifting.
The French House Share is a captivating tale of love, loss, and second chances. Perfect for fans of Veronica Henry, Jo Thomas, and Fiona Valpy, it’s a story that blends humour, romance, and emotional honesty into a truly uplifting read.

Oh, Gillian, you've done it again! Now, not only do I want to go and live in France, but I fancy a change of career to hospitality! Bella is living in a small village in France with her husband, living the dream. Or rather, her dream. She has, from a young age, wanted to run a B&B in France, after what was to her an idyllic school trip there, cementing her hopes for the future. And she has achieved that with her husband. But things are never as simple as that, are they? It's not for him, after eight years, and he wants a clean break, if she isn't prepared to up sticks and head back 'home' to the UK. What follows is Bella trying to live part of her dream and reinventing herself several times, unintentionally, as she moves to Versailles and gets herself a job in a Paris boutique hotel, under somewhat cloudy circumstances. (I won't say false, as I am sure there are plenty out there who have slightly elaborated CVs to get interviews and jobs!) The characters she meets along the way, including the students she ends up house sharing with, and the elusive landlord, as well as her new boss, and a rather scary cantankerous old woman who lives at the hotel where she secures a job, all make for a fantastic supporting cast, to this story of second chances, and learning more about oneself in times of pressure. Oh, and of course there is romance, but it's not always about the handsome French dude...! Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC.
This is so much more than a regular romance book. In fact, the main love story here is the one Bella is working on with herself.
It starts with a bunch of triggers if you've gone through a nasty divorce (especially if you've been dumped abroad like I have). But that being said, Bella's strong character and stamina is such an awesome support system for any reader dealing with something similar, making this the perfect second chance in life story.
I absolutely loved all the French bits. The locations, the cafes, the people and the overall vibe were simply sublime. It really made me feel like I'm living in France. This book actually made want to travel to Versailles!
I loved how realistic The French House Share felt. I'm new to Gillian Harvey's writing which so quickly proved to be engaging and relatable. Virtually all the characters (aside from Pete) in this story felt like real people you would love to know in real life, making this one of those stories you wish you could step into and live along. Sadly, also giving you the inevitable book hangover when it's all over.
I am looking forward to reading more from this fabulous writer.
Huge thank you to Boldwood Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was overjoyed to have been accepted on the Booktour for The French House Share, having received an ARC to read and review. It was the perfect antidote to the more emotionally exhausting books I’ve read recently … upbeat, beautiful location and lots to smile about. Although Bella has her moments during the novel, it really is a story about resilience coming out on top.
From the very beginning, I found myself really enjoying this book and quickly rooting for Bella to get her happy ever after. She’s a character who feels very human. She’s flawed, emotional and easy to empathise with, which made her journey all the more engaging. I particularly liked the non-chronological narrative; it added depth to the story and slowly revealed key moments in a way that kept me invested throughout.
The French setting brings a wonderful sense of romanticism to the novel. Harvey’s descriptions made me long for sun-soaked days, charming streets and that effortless French atmosphere, which worked beautifully alongside the storyline. The book is well written, warm and thoroughly enjoyable, striking a great balance between romance, self-discovery and hope.
Overall, The French House Share would make the perfect holiday read because it’s comforting, escapist and easy to fall into. I received an advance reader copy from Love Books Tours, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the book tour for this lovely novel.
'The French House Share' is the fourth title I have read and enjoyed from Gillian Harvey and I only discovered her writing in 2024. Her novels offer the reader a dose of escapism and transport them to France.
Isabella, (Bella) the protagonist of this emotional story is in her early thirties and for the last eight years has along with her husband been living a dream life in France. Forced to unexpectedly relinquish her rural B and B she decides that the last thing she wants to do is leave France. To enable her to stay she manages to obtain a job in a hotel in Paris and a room in a house share in Versailles. Unfortunately she has been telling a few white lies to facilitate the job and the room and as one would suspect they start to catch up with her and make life even more complicated. Will she be able to sort things out and actually enjoy the new life she has made for herself.
A read that will transport you to France and lift your spirits as you find yourself encouraging the protagonist to be optimistic as she sets about taking chances to make changes in her life, though maybe not always in ways one would personally approve of.
With thanks to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the opportunity to read and review.
4.5🌟 stars I really got into this story of a British 30-something woman who dreams of living in France, makes her dream come true and then finds it's not all perfect, happiness and light eight years after the move. But when most of the dream crumbles into dust, she gets inventive to find a new French home and job as a stop gap while she regroups. Turns out her temporary house share in Versailles and project manager's job in a boutique Paris hotel reshape her and bring new friends and goals in life, even some unexpected romance.
The writing made the story breeze along. I am a reader who gets turned off by extensive use of descriptive details and the author provided just the right balance here: enough to evoke a striking sunrise, the grandeur of a room or a nightclub's atmosphere without capturing every nook and floorboard. The people remained the focus and that's what I wanted.
Loved the characters, particularly main character Bella, Madame Roux and Camille at the hotel. It's a story of personal growth, reconnecting with family and seeking what makes you eager to face the new day.
Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
This was a really enjoyable read, showing how Bella has to move on with her life after she followed her husbands dream years ago and now he wants out - of the marriage and the lifestyle.
The couple moved to France with big dreams and they soon discovered that life wasn't as idyllic as they had imagined it. But Bella adapted well to French life so when he drops the bomb that he wants to move back to England, she's determined to stay and just wonders where life will take her next.
she soon finds a job and has to move into a house share nearby, with younger people and you begin to see the differences in outlook and how she goes along with their perception that she's younger than she actually is so that she feels part of the crowd. It makes for some really fun dynamics to play out, and you start to see her confidence return as she settles into this new way of life, forging her own path in life after years of relying on her husband.
I really enjoyed Bella as a character and the way she deals with problems she faces. There's also flashbacks to her life before so you can see the darker times she had to deal with, so to have this lighter side of her to follow is really nice and really shows her growth in confidence and living the life she always dreamt of!
I really enjoyed reading The French House Share by Gillian Harvey.
The story follows Bella, a woman whose long-held dream of living in France unravels when her husband leaves her and she’s forced to sell the rural B&B they built together. Determined not to give up on France—or on herself—Bella moves to Versailles, where she takes a job at a small hotel and ends up living in a lively house share with people much younger than herself. Trying to rebuild her life, Bella quietly bends the truth about her age and experience, juggling new friendships, work pressures, and the fear of being found out. As she navigates heartbreak, reinvention, and unexpected romance, she begins to rediscover who she is outside of the life she lost.
Set against a vivid French backdrop, the story is about second chances, starting over, and finding confidence and happiness after everything you thought you wanted falls apart.
Overall, this is a feel-good, light-hearted novel that delivers escapism, warmth, and hope. Despite a few convenient resolutions, it’s an entertaining and positive read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
This was a fun, feel-good story about second chances.
Bella’s life imploded when her mum dies while she was in school. Soon after, she gives up on her dreams of attending university, taking on work as a sales clerk at Boots. She continues to relive that one perfect week in school she spent on a class trip to France. When she meets Pete and they fall in love, she convinces him to move with her to France and to run a Bed & Breakfast.
Years later, when Pete walks out on Bella, she’s desperate, broke, and entirely without job prospects. Fudging her cv, she lands a job at a hotel and pretends to be a student to obtain a cheap house share. A job she’s underqualified for and a house share for which she’s far too old keep her busy juggling her lies, while simultaneously providing her the unexpected opportunity to learn who she really is.
I enjoyed this (late) coming of age story, set mostly in Versailles and Paris, following Bella’s story of accidental reinvention.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy - all thoughts are my own.
Bella is living her dream life, running a beautiful rural B&B in France, and feels she has finally moved on from her past. However, her world is turned upside down when her husband suddenly requests a divorce. This unexpected turn of events forces her to leave behind everything she has built and relocate to the lovely town of Versailles. There, she finds a new job at a hotel and begins a new chapter in a vibrant house share.
The narrative is told through dual timelines, alternating between the present and significant past events that have influenced Bella's journey. I found the book engaging and heartfelt; it explores themes of love, loss, and second chances—not just for Bella, but for several other characters as well. While the story is compelling, I felt some moments could have been developed further for a deeper emotional impact. Overall, it's a worthwhile read that resonates with those who appreciate stories about resilience and new beginnings.
I really enjoyed The French House Share by Gillian Harvey. It is scheduled to be published on January 25, 2026 by Boldwood Books and I highly recommend it. I found it to be exactly the right mix of serious and hopeful that worked to challenge my expectations without raising my anxiety.
In the first few pages of the book, Bella finds out that the plan she had for her life will need to change suddenly when her partner declares that he no longer wants to help with the business that they had been running in France and wants to break up and move back to the UK. Bella is forced to make some decisions for herself and find a way to live her own life in France.
The French House Share takes us through her adventures with trying to secure a new job, a place to live and discovering the things that she is passionate about. I loved the supportive friendships in the book, the found family aspect, and the fact that while there is a love story, it is not the main focus.
I have a feeling I will go back to this book when needing a reminder that while things may not work the way I plan, it's okay to jump in with both feet and try new things because the unexpected roads can bring us to great destinations too.
Thank you very much to Boldwood Books and author Gillian Harvey for providing a digital advance reader copy of this lovely book via NetGalley in consideration of a possible review. All opinions are my own.
When the reality of Bella's dream of living and working in France doesn't live up to the fantasy, she will do anything not to return to her former life. As her marriage implodes, she runs to Paris, to a new job she knows little about and to a house share with strangers. I was intrigued by this story from the onset. Bella has faced tragedy at a young age, and following a dream of living in France becomes a talisman for her. This tale follows her emotional and physical journey to a new life, which involves letting go and reevaluating the past. I invested in Bella, empathising with her heartbreak and the moral dilemmas she faces as she seeks her best life. The supporting characters are diverse, and all add something to Bella's emotional rebirth. I like the humour, the moments of heartbreak, the growth in Bella's character, and the gentle romance that accompanies it. It's an uplifting read in an exciting setting. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Bella is living her childhood dream…… living in France and running and owning a B&B with her husband Pete. They renovated a rundown and uninhabited farmhouse….. and survived Covid… things were going well…. or so she thought. That is until Pete decides it’s not his dream any more and wants to move back to the UK. And just like that her life is turned upside down. She needs to pack up and sell the B&B, find a job and somewhere to live. This is a heartwarming story of friendship, love and loss. Can Bella be happy again. Can she restart and find herself? I enjoyed this book, it covers many topics, it really delves into Bella finding herself even tho there are some hiccups on the way
Thank you Net galley, the publisher and author for the ARC of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
Bella is living happily in France with her husband but then her world comes tumbling down when he throws a bombshell her way. Forced to give up her life and the time she had spent making her dreams come true, she stumbles upon hotel work, and a house share. The only downside is that she has not told the other house mates how old she really is and they are all young and single and complete opposites to her. But Bella feels as though half her life has been a lie and wasted so why not embrace her new life. But for how long? I liked the fact that the book was set in France as this is a place I have been too so can totally see the setting that Gillian has described. The first half was easy to get into but I feel the second half was not as good. It just felt a bit too much and a bit too long. But I did enjoy the first half.
I enjoyed reading this book. The story was entertaining and believable enough and even though I couldn't really relate to FMC Bella at first since she acted very juvenile I grew to like her after a while. I could relate how she might be enticed to live like a carefree twenty-something again especially since she clearly didn't get to do that in her actual twenties. I liked how the story proceeded but I have to say that all of the problems that Bella had or that arose were rather easily fixed in the end which was a bit unbelievable. Still the book is very entertaining and uplifting. I received an ARC via netgalley.com and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A great read of starting over, i loved Bella's story and the heartbreak of leaving her dream behind when her husband decided he didn't want to share her dream, finding another job and moving to a different location in France. It was a story full of great characters each believable and so well developed it was joy to read, from the beautiful setting in Versailles to the complete chaos of her house share, I don't think I'd like to live like I was in my 20s again but this definitely got me thinking about it. There was a lovely flow to this book and I had lots of giggles along the way. A highly recommended read.
This book has made me very much consider my next trip to be to France!
Bella and Pete are living their dream life, running a B&B in rural France. The book leads us on Bella’s journey of self discovery while living another life…
Bella is determined, hard working and creative, forging a way in a new career and lifestyle. I enjoyed the time hops back to her childhood and her relationship with her sister.
My favourite character may well be Madame Roux! She is a force of a woman and I loved her manner throughout. This was a delightful read from start to finish!

✨🇫🇷 The French House Share 🇫🇷✨ A warm, escapist and heartwarming read with a gentle emotional touch 💖 I loved the French setting, which was beautifully described and easy to escape into 🥐🍷 Bella wasn’t always easy to accept at first, but her journey was inspiring, kind, and ultimately worth it ✨ The romance stayed softly in the background, with a slow, natural build that felt just right 💕 Comforting, easy to read, and made me smile — and I loved the ending 💫 ⭐ 4.5 stars ⭐ Thanks to Boldwood Books, Gillian Harvey, and NetGalley 📚✨
2.75⭐️ rounded up I usually really enjoy Gillian Harvey’s books, but unfortunately, this one didn’t click with me. The emphasis on the characters lying to one another throughout the entire story as well as the focus on Gen Z, with millennials depicted as being “old”, made it harder for me to relate to the story and its characters. Thank you to the publisher and author for providing me with a complimentary advanced copy. All thoughts shared here are my own.
Bella's dream of living in France is brought to a sudden end and she has to make some choices, but when her luck changes based on lies, will it all work out in the end?
This is a fairly easy read but it just didn't have the usual charm that Gillian Harvey's french escapist reads have! The characters are largely likeable and it's entertaining but it just didn't captivate or flow in the way I've enjoyed her other books..
My first book by Gillian Harvey, so I wasn't sure what I was getting into. She didn't disappoint, her writing skills drew me in right from the beginning.
Bella's dream was to go to university, but those dreams given up when her mum passes away. So she takes the first job she was given. Working at Boots. It's also where she meets and becomes friends with Pete. Whom she marries and follows his dreams of opening a B&B. They divorce and she loses the B&B. What will she do? No job, money, not much on her resume. Pre-order your copy today for a January 26th release date.
Heartwarming and joyful. Full of friendship and hope. This was a truly beautiful book. I liked Bella a lot she had a very complex life and her tenacity and hope was inspirational. I also really liked her sister Kitty who was stoic and her backbone. This was a great book. Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
As usual this author transports the reader to the delights of France and all it has to offer in this Tory of starting over and second chances.
This was an uplifting and easy read full of hope and positivity for the future and how with a bit of determination and good friends life can be changed for the better
This was a sweet and easy read, perfect for this time of year when were all busy with Christmas preparations. A little predictable but perfectly acceptable. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
A woman has a dream to own a B&B in France but her husband leaves her. She has to sell the B&B but finds a job managing a small hotel. She also finds a boarding house where she finds friendly people.
