First ever romantic thriller, and it did not disappoint.😮💨
There are plenty of twists and high adrenaline moments. A story where danger and desire collide without mercy and I fucking loved that.
The gut wrenching one liners I cried for were definitely the ones that made me run to buy a physical copy.
it was unexpectedly the book I needed, every page.
didn't even know you could flirt while coding and through computer stuff lol
I can't believe I needed a Morally gray man like Maddox to fix all my problems. He’s not a perfect hero, but don't worry, I like them flawed. He's actually my baby. *insert "✨️what about the people he murdered? what murderrrr"✨️*
and don't even let me start with Vivien, I could marry that woman if Maddox wasn't a possessive dangerous man💀
I came for the suspense; I stayed for the ache until putting the book down felt impossible.

This story kept me invested and glued to the pages, all 548 of them! The plot is solid and enthralling, at times chilling; the story is packed with action. Characters are coherent with their backgrounds; they are believable and real. They’re truly alive and not just props.
It is also clear the author did a lot of research for this book and is familiar with the corporate world and its rules (what a lucky woman...).
As a note, I loved the use of the language – flowing, beautiful yet sharp where needed, dancing smoothly from heated scenes that will make you clutch your pearls tightly, to dark tech underworld with murky loyalties, and then to action-packed sequences.

This book was so much fun. RomanceXtechnothriller isn't the genre combo I realized I was missing, but now I definitely want more. This book was pretty much non-stop action, but there was still plenty of time for romance. Mads and Viv were amazing together, and I loved seeing their relationship overcome their pasts. Mads is absolutely obsessed and Viv actually stays mad for more than 2 seconds, which feels rare in romance, and I appreciate it.
The world was interesting too, and was giving light cyberpunk vibes, although that's not explicitly spelled out. There is enough detail that you know what is going on, but room to use your imagination. I assume we will learn more in future books. I'm also excited to learn more about K and E, who I assume the next books focus on.

Well, I got this ebook called The Code We Break, and let me tell you, I thought my phone was about to explode from all that hacking and sneaking around.
So there’s this woman named Vivien. She’s digs up secrets for a living and doesn't quit till she finds them. She starts poking around some fancy company computer, and whoops, there it is. She finds some code that isn't supposed to be there. Next thing she knows, she’s has people after her like she poked a hornets nest, and now she’s has to deal with this mystery man named Maddox Wolfe.
This guy Maddox, he’s a hacker too, and he faked his own death like he’s in one of them spy movies. Except he's not James Bond, he's more like the man your mom warned you about. He's knows too much and talks too little. He’s got more secrets than a small town Facebook group, and somehow he’s the one supposed to keep Vivien safe, because he’s the reason she’s in trouble to start with.
Now they have some wild chemistry between them. You can feel the sparks popping off the screen even when they’re arguing about passwords and firewalls. She thinks he’s trouble, he thinks she is too smart for her own good, and they don’t ever stop fighting, flirting, or running from danger.
There is a lot of action, it’s got romance, and it has more codes and computer talk than I knew existed. I was sitting there like, I just learned how to use my email, calm down. But I'm not going to lie, the story pulled me in even though I had no clue what half them words meant. It was tense and a bit crazy.
By the end, I was rooting for them, even though I kept thinking, girl, you better change all your passwords and maybe move to another planet because this man brings drama like a thunderstorm.
I give it 5 outta 5 catfish!

I didn’t know I needed a dark hacker romance in my life until I read this book — and now I’m obsessed! It completely caught me off guard in the best possible way.
I’ll admit, there were moments when the technical parts went a bit over my head, but that only made me appreciate the author’s incredible knowledge and research even more. The writing feels intelligent, immersive, and so authentic — you can tell every detail was crafted with care and precision.
The connection between Vivien and Maddox is absolutely electric — the tension, the longing, the intensity between them had me hooked from page one. I didn’t even realize I had a thing for praise until this book, but wow, I was right there with Viv, feeling every emotion, every heartbeat.
It was thrilling, addictive, and perfectly balanced between emotional depth and spice. (Though, I have to say, I really wish that hot tub had been put to better use 😂🔥)
The characters felt so real — flawed but incredibly human — and I loved how the author blended emotional vulnerability with technical realism. I felt with them every step of the way.
And now I need more about ELK, Eloise, and Clark. Please don’t leave me hanging — give me more, now! 😭💻❤️

This is so brilliant. Not my usual read these days but I'm so glad I dipped my toe back into thrillers. Yes there is some spice and it's good spice but this is much more. Plot is paced really well, fantastic angle of high tech black hats and white hats and definitely some Grey hat business. The MCs were dynamic and interesting, both with a traumatic history, whilst it shaped their story it didn't define who they are.
The additional characters brought depth to the narrative and have given us new paths to follow.
I thought about Maddox and Vivien for a couple of days after finishing, that's pretty cool.

I'm COMPLETELY unwell over this story in the best possible way, and I LOVED every second of it. The twists came one after another, the adrenaline was never slowing down, and I stayed glued to every single page like my life was depending on it. Maddox absolutely destroyed me, and also my standards while I was falling harder and harder for him. I was completely obsessed with him and his morally grey, broken, dangerous hacker personality who was carrying too many sins and too much history, and yet I was still soft for him every time he was letting his guard slip. He never pretendend to be a hero, and that was exactly why he was working so well for me. He was intense, protective, emotionally wrecked and painfully loyal, and I was eating up every messy, complicated layer of him. He was my baby, and I fully stand by him. Vivien was everything I was craving in a FMC . She was sharp, competent and stubborn, and she was incredibly real. I resonated with her and her independency SO much. She was angry when she deserved to be angry, she was making mistakes and owning them, and she was never shrinking herself just because Maddox was standing in front of her. Their chemistry made me absolutely feral. It was INSANE how quicky they clicked and how freaking good they were together. I was honestly losing my mind over the fact that hacking banter was doing this to me. The emotional tension was constantly wrapping around every dangerous moment, and felt the yearning, the hesitation and the vulnerability slipping in between betrayals, and corporate conspiracies. Their trauma was shaping the way they were moving through the world, but it was never defining who they were. The writing felt intelligent and deliberate the entire time, controlled like both characters were. The pacing stayed sharp, the stakes were constantly rising, and every sequence was pushing the story forward instead of dragging it down. The side characters were everything. I'm already getting emotionally attached to all of them, and I desperately want more from them. And the spice was absolutely delivering. My gosh, I had to fan myself a couple of times. Nothing felt random or excessive. The intimate moments were deepening the connection between the characters. By the end, I didn't want Maddox and Vivien go. Absolutely loved!!

This novel contains a lot of coding jargon, but it's presented in a way that's easy to follow. The main characters are flawed but real, and most importantly, CONSISTENT. Our FMC does not turn into a blubbering pushover when she meets the MMC (which is something I find too often in novels). She starts off strong, and may make a few mistakes, but she owns them. The MMC is running/hiding from the mistakes of his past, partakes in some light cyberstalking of the FMC, and before he even understands it, becomes emotionally ensnared by her. The spicy scenes are HOT. The stakes are high, which helps propel the story through all 540-ish pages.
Having said that, I feel the novel could have been trimmed a bit. There were some redundant sentiments throughout, and many of the coding descriptions could have been shortened. I found myself skimming over a few sections because the excess slowed the pace. Other than that, the writing is near impeccable, with precise yet somewhat descriptive, emotive prose. The novel introduces a handful of interesting side characters that I can’t wait to learn more about in future novels. Read it! You won’t regret it.

This is a dark romance unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and it’s genre-bending in the best way. Action-packed and well-written, the romance was intense and spicy, and the action was nonstop with high stakes. I loved Vivien & Maddox! This book reads like a political or spy thriller in a way, with secrets, lies, betrayal, and corruption. If you like to read dark romance with suspense, action & adventure books or thrillers, and like morally grey hackers who stalk you as a form of affection and would burn the world down for you, this is the book for you! I can’t wait for the next book from this impressive debut author.

The Code We Break by Nicky Doyle is an engaging and atmospheric read that pulled me in from the very first chapter. Vivienne quickly became the heart of the story for me, and her backstory is written with so much care and authenticity that she felt genuinely relatable. I found myself really rooting for her. The story itself is gripping and unfolds with a steady tension that kept me turning the pages. The vivid descriptions also gave me those great old-school crime vibes, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

There were some times were I personally felt there was too much detail into the technical side of hacking, but I don't feel like it was so much that it affected the story.
The spice itself was hot. Not over the top or cringey. The balance between spice and plot was perfect.

I loved this book and devoured it in two days! The plot is new and intriguing and the writing is beautiful. It’s thrilling and dark, full of yearning and broken humans trying to put each other and themselves back together. I definitely didn’t understand most of the coding language but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment or engagement. I didn’t want to leave Mads and Vivian and I can’t wait to see what the next books bring in this world!! Everyone needs to read this book so that I have someone to talk to about it!

Wow! What a ride! This book is if “You” “Mr. Robot” and Jason Bourne had a baby in the best of ways. This has action, hot hackers, suspense, and the spice is this novel is Out. Of. This. World. OMG. Mixed in with sweet moments of healing and comfort. Maddox and Vivien are instantly likeable, I found myself rooting for them right away. They are accompanied by an all-star cast of side characters who all feel real. This world feels lived in, dark, intense, and dangerous (and did I mention the hot hackers?) I was at the edge of my seat for the entire book. Definitely worth the read!

The characters interactions are what kept me coming back. I was drawn in to the beginning but kind of had to force myself to read through the middle. It all fits and works but was just... alot. Looking at it from the other side, it all makes sense and helps the pieces all fit together but its definitely not a quick read kind of book. Maddox might be my new favorite broken villainous book boyfriend .

Maddox’s intensity is just fantastic! This book was soooo fun from the dynamic relationship to the danger that encompasses the entire plot. Vivien and Maddox are a force to be reckoned with!! Also appreciated how easy it was to understand all the tech and cyber-security lingo, it made the plot impact very enjoyable.

4.5 stars!!! Morally grey MMC stalker/hacker, feisty FMC, loved them both. Can't wait for the next book in the series. The only reason for me it wasn't a 5 star was some of the tech/hacker terminology was over my head 🤦🏻♀️ but the characters, story and of course the spice keep me hooked regardless

I enjoyed the development of the romance between Vivian and Maddox. The spice starts early and keeps the heat high through the whole book, their reactions and motivations are believable and intriguing. The non-romantic relationships, family and friends, also had depth and I love it when those relationships also drive the story forward.
This is Nicky Doyle's debut novel and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

I originally purchased The Code We Break because of the aesthetic, I will not lie, but becoming friends with the author made the experience even sweeter. I have actually read this book twice, which is something I never do. I wanted a refresher before the second book released on February 9, and I am so glad I did. This book read me just as much as I read it. The FMC works in the field I want to be in and uses many of the same coping mechanisms I do. I have never felt more seen or represented in a book than I did with this one. The story is very fast paced but handled with such meticulous care that it flows effortlessly. There is so much tension as the main characters deal with the consequences of their own actions and decisions. There is some spice, but it is done tastefully. If that is not your thing, it is easy to skip those moments and still fully enjoy the story. My hat is off to you, Nicky. You have done an amazing job through and through. This book has not left my mind, and I am so excited to get my hands on The Lies We Live.
