Review for complete series

Sasa comes from a loving home and parents who run a veterinary clinic. For three years, she has been in love with one of their customers; Maki who regularly brings in his elderly dog. Someone who loves their pet so much must have a kind heart - or so Sasa thought until she begins to attend high school and finds her schoolmate Maki to be a complete philanderer.

I would really like to know: is jumping school gates really a thing in Japan? Koi Toka, Kiss Toka, Karada Toka opens with one of the most common shoujo scenes: Sasa is late for school, decides to climb the school gates and lands on none other than her crush, Maki. Opening cliché aside, this manga offers a cute plot that has more depth than one might expect. Unfortunately, it also suffers from awkward pacing - it's not even a bad pacing, but something is really off about it.

While, of course, Sasa and Maki's love story is the main element of this series, it also picks up on several other subjects which are dealt with in a heartfelt and realistic manner. Our two main characters are considered total opposites: Sasa is a very proper girl, obeys the rules (minus school gate jumping) and believes in true and pure love - never would she even hold the hand of a boy she doesn't like. And while at first, this might give you the impression of a meek heroine, Sasa is very outspoken and will quickly deal out moral advice and judgment on others.

Maki, on the other hand, is first introduced as a rather mean guy who just likes to hang around with girls for fun. When Sasa realises what he's actually like and gives him a scolding, he starts to become interested in her as he is not used to rejection. At least, that's what we are first given to believe. At the heart of Maki's behaviour lie familial issues and fear of abandonment. Sasa is indeed his counterpart in that she comes from a very loving family that borders on overprotectiveness.

These family dynamics are given an important role in this story and being with Sasa and her family changes Maki and his views and goals in life. Additionally, the veterinary clinic isn't just there for show: animal care does also play a role and ultimately becomes a goal for both our main characters to follow.

I found Maki and Sasa's relationship cute and, for the most of it, realistic; Maki's change came about in a natural way where he learns to trust, care for someone and how to treat someone accordingly. Sasa also needs to learn and grow and I just really liked these two together. What did strike me as a little odd was their intimate relationship. It's great that Maki respects that Sasa feels shy and 'not ready', however, five years seems a bit extreme.

With that also come the pacing issues. I don't know if it was a printing error but the second last volume ends with a chapter that feels as though it should be at the end of the series. This chapter shows a glimpse of 10 years down the line - is it a dream? A joke chapter? Nothing indicates that it was just a dream or anything of the sort - I was just really confused why this chapter was shown between their highschool and university time. I simply can't get my head around the order. In addition, I feel as though this series should have stuck to just high school. While it was nice to see the characters a tad older, all it did was make more time pass which made a few things in their relationship seem a little off, such as the aforementioned intimate relationship.

Chiba's art is as gorgeous as all of her more recent works. It's a cute story and includes more than your average shoujo manga but it's definitely got a few heavier flawse. I do still believe that this is a worthwhile manga to pick up.

It is a really sweet love story that makes your heart pound like crazy, and that’s only with 15 chapters. This manga is an amazing love story that every girl wishes to have. I really loved the very first page of the manga, if made me grin like an idiot. And then grin again, because I had this feeling that I will love it until the last page. And no, I’m not telling you what is on the opening page, however, I will give you the 4th or 5th page, which made me laugh so much I couldn’t stop.

Now, let’s get back to the story, our heroine is a high school freshman – Sasa Yamamoto, a really nice girl, who applied to the particular school because of her senior, whom she has fllen I love and been having a crash on for nearly 3 years. Now let me introduce Sasa’s crush – Maki Kaneda, older by a year, is a very nice, handsome and kind person (that’s what Sasa thinks him be). But well, we’re in a manga, so definitely her expectations of him are crashed to zillion pieces when she walks on him having sex with definitely not his girlfriend. What will Sasa do now? Will she unravel the secret behind Maki’s behaviour and is it possible that those two will end up together?

Well, sorry to spoil it but they will (it’s in the end of the very first chapter) and from that on will start an amazing of love between Sasa and Maki. It was amazing how their relationship progressed, all the ups and downs. There will be rivals and their relationship will have to face a lot of difficulties, so will they be able to live through it and stay together? Read the story and find out yourself.

As always the drawing style is amazing, and characters never disappoint. I loved both of them. I can’t even say who I loved more Sasa or Maki. Sasa is a really great character, she is really storing and at the same time very fragile. Her and Maki’s banter is amazing, especially in the very beginning. This moment was just superb:

Maki’s idea of relationship cracked me up, and Sasa’s expression and comeback was really amazing.

I hope you do find some time to read this amazingly cute love story. There are only 4 chapters on Mangafox completely translated, but you can read it on raffmanga.ch it will take a bit more time, due to pressing more buttons, however, it will be still worth reading. Enjoy it to its fullest
