I savored this one to the very end. It is one of my all-time favorite Chicken Soup's, a tie for first place along with Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul. Nature Lover's Soul has some wonderful stories, Goose Island in which Tom Lusk helps with the birth of a gosling, a really funny story about Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace, a poignant story by Heather Trexler Remoff about what makes Grace run. There's the story of Lee and her dying wish to swim with dolphins and a mom who lets the chores go to have a picnic lunch with her kids. Like the cover says there are stories here to inspire, stories of joy, insight and adventure in the great outdoors. I so much loved the story by Linda M. Hasselstrom from the book Land Circle called Bells in the Night that I bought two copies of Land Circle and have contacted her via email and made a new acquaintance. Frequently when I'm done with a Chicken Soup I'll either give it away or swap it on paperbackswap.com but not this time. It's a keeper!
A nice quick read as spring sets in her, and it's more possible to read outside now! This book, like the other Chicken Soup series collects essays that revolve around an individual theme. A good variety of stories, ranging from high adventure to simple back-yard types of adventures. Good way to get in the mood for the warmer weather coming up for the summer and dreaming of your own outdoor adventures!
Solace and sustenance received from being in the great outdoors is a theme song in many of the essays in my travel collection Lost Angel Walkabout- One Traveler’s Tales. I have found that my body goes out of balance and I lose my equilibrium if I don’t get a nature fix with regularity. So, it was Fitting that a friend should give me a copy of this book filled with touching testimonials about the different ways that we connect with nature. Many of the stories speak of the healing power of nature when we focus and connect with earth energy. Some of them share how being in nature with an estranged family member brought people closer through shared experience. Others stories are about testing limits, facing fears and the joy of triumph. Swimming with Dolphins is a heart breaking account of a terminally ill little girl whose dream is realized when she swims with dolphin setting her free to leave a body that had betrayed her. This collection is a tapestry of tales that enrich, and inspire—truly Chicken Soup for the Nature Lover’s Soul.
P.S. The author Linda Ballou in this book is not me, rather it is a kindred spirit I am quite pleased to meet. www.lindaballouauthor.com
I enjoyed all of the stories and the quotes that preceded many of the contributions that writers made to this book. My favorite story in the book was "Last Outing" by James Hert. It brought me a smile. The writers offer amazing descriptions of scenes from nature throughout the book such as this one from Robert Fulghum's "Donnie". "Across the back of our house is a row of middle-aged matronly maple trees, extravagantly dressed in season in a million leaf-sequins. And in season the sequins detach. Not much wind in our sheltered yard, so the leaves lie about the ladies' feet now like dressing gowns they've stepped out of in preparation for the bath of winter." (p. 330) I had many "WOW" moments while reading Chicken Soup for the Nature Lover's Soul. I hope I can find a hardbound copy to order for the school library.
Full of heart-warming and funny stories about people's interactions with nature. Perfect for those times when you have to pick up a book at different times and would lose the thread of the story if you read a novel.I especially liked the story about the young girl who bicycled across the country, even after being hit by a car.
