Constantine Capers #4

The Veil of Death

Rate this book
In a city ruled by veils and shadows, even love can become a dangerous game.

Paris 1889

With her uncle’s wedding on the horizon, Mira Blayse longs for a moment of peace. But peace is a luxury she can't afford—not after the fires in the catacombs, the truth about The Charger, and the knowledge that corruption reaches deep into the heart of the Parisian police.

When death comes far too close to home, Mira and Byron are pulled into a tangled web of deception and rising political tensions. General Boulanger’s rising popularity in France—and the dark secrets behind it—hint at something far worse than scandal. Unrest is spreading across Europe, and Mira knows that if Circe is involved, war will follow.

But Mira isn’t just fighting against The Order. She’s guarding secrets that could destroy her family—and uncovering more that could upend her relationship with Byron. His memory is slipping again. And he’s hiding something. Then again… so is she.

As old enemies circle and new threats emerge, Mira must decide how much truth to reveal—and how much she's willing to risk for justice.

Natalie Brianne's love of writing might be traced back to an old Rainbow Macintosh Laptop she received for her 8th birthday. Perhaps it came from years of storytelling and the discipline of wonder. Or maybe, she was born to write and didn’t realize it until a book sprung out of her fingertips somewhere between a house in Pleasant Grove, Utah and a bus on its way to Edinburgh, Scotland.

She received her degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities from BYU. While she could have studied English or Creative Writing, she opted to learn more about culture, distant lands, and people in hopes of writing better stories. Much of her first book, Constantine Capers: The Pennington Perplexity was written when she lived at 27 Palace Court, London, walking the streets as if she were her characters.

While her interests in writing spread across genres, you can always expect her work to be imaginative, clean, and clever.

The Veil of Death by Natalie Brianne is the fourth go round with Byron Constantine and his love, Mira Blayse. They are still in Paris following the cessation of the last book, and after someone close to Mira dies, she is convinced it’s murder and begins sleuthing. There is, of course, the overarching plot of Circe to contend with as well.

With a series like this, it’s important to read the others. The author helps by sprinkling in information from the past novels, but I think if anyone jumped in, they’d be lost. I actually enjoy when books have a plot and they build on prior volumes. It’s like I can grow along with the characters and everything’s not just reset at the end of the story.

I found the mystery itself to be intriguing and plotted out well, and after “trustworthy” people had turned out to be not so trustworthy in the past, it made me suspicious of various characters, which is fun. I think my one quibble is that Mira basically did all the legwork on this, putting the pieces together while Byron just trotted along at her heels. It’s more fun if there’s a more balanced give-and-take, but! I can hardly complain if a woman is given the chance to shine in a story and use her wit to protect herself and others.

3.5 stars, so I’m happy to round up!

This was a brilliant continuation of Mira and Byron’s story. I feel like this book series stand out amongst others because the story continues with each book instead of being stand alone mysteries, and Mira and Byron’s relationship continues to move forward instead of remaining stagnant or slow burn with nothing happening.

I absolutely adored book 3, and while book 4 is a slower pace of story Circe continues to cause trouble in Mira’s life and this story really explores Mira’s feelings about everything that has happened in previous books. Once again I never know which characters to trust and I love the gut feelings I get.

The recap of the previous books event at the start being covered as Mira being interviewed was a great way to start. I love how supportive Bryon is throughout, and how they both reveal their secrets and are able to have an open conversation without judgement for keeping something from the other. There also doesn’t seem to be any unnecessary drama between them that keeps them.

I can’t wait to see what others think of this new adventure.

In a city ruled by veils and shadows, even love can become a dangerous game.

The Veil of Death is the fourth book in the Constantine Capers series, and with every story, more secrets come to light. I really enjoy how Mira and Byron’s romance keeps growing with each book, and we get to uncover little pieces of the puzzle about her family’s history.

In this latest story, we're back in Paris, planning her uncle’s wedding. A lot was revealed in the last book, and Mira is still trying to process it all, especially the truth about the Charger. Then, a death hits close to home, throwing everything into chaos. Mira and Byron find themselves tangled in lies and deception, certain that Circe is involved. They have to stop Circe's plans before things spiral out of control and lead to war.

Old enemies resurface, and new threats appear. Mira faces tough choices about how much of the truth to reveal and what risks she’s willing to take for justice. She’s juggling family secrets that could cause harm, dealing with Byron’s fading memory, and sensing that he’s keeping things from her—though she’s hiding things too.

The plot is intricate, the characters are rich and layered, and the family dynamics add depth. There are plenty of twists and mysteries that keep me guessing. With each book, I get more hooked, eager to find out what’s next. Brianne has a way of pulling me in from the very first page and keeping me captivated. I can’t wait to see where Mira and Byron’s journey takes them next, with so many secrets still buried and adventures waiting to unfold.

Still in Paris following the aftermath of the Durand case, Mira is plagued by nightmares, flashbacks, and grief. Byron is investigating corruption within the Paris police force while Fred recovers from his wounds. While the shadow of Circe hangs over everything, all is not dark. Mira and Walker are bonding with their new cousins and preparations are underway for Cyrus and Loretta’s wedding. A shocking death, initially dismissed as natural causes, sparks suspicion in Mira and Byron. Determined to prove otherwise, they’re drawn into the political intrigue and talk of war. With secrets and conspiracies all around, who can they trust?

The fourth book in the Constantine Capers continues the story with plenty of suspense and intrigue. Mira’s PTSD is brilliantly depicted and sensitively handled in her conversation with Byron. Their relationship hits some bumps with both keeping secrets and Mira’s insecurities around Byron’s memory, but heartfelt communication makes their bond stronger than ever. Despite the heartache involved, I’m glad that Mira revealed the truth about The Charger to her family. Cyrus and Loretta’s wedding was a bright spot among the grief and I hope they have many beautiful moments still to come. I loved the resolution with the boarding house and hope to see Klasha in future books as well. As our crew returns to England, I’m looking forward to the next chapter of this compelling story.

'The Veil of Death' brings readers back to Paris while offering fresh scenery, family developments, and another satisfying step in the larger arc of the series. Natalie Brianne does a wonderful job of holding onto the heart of these beloved characters while weaving in new layers of mystery.

This series has quickly become one of my favorites. Each book captures the magic of the first while shifting settings and circumstances enough to feel fresh and engaging—I’m completely hooked! I also love that the main characters remain wholesome even as they confront darker enemies and wrestle with grief, loss, and the longing for justice.

The pacing here is slower at times, with Byron and Mira’s romance and the unraveling of Circe unfolding more gradually. Still, I’m eager for Book 5 - where Byron and Mira will likely grow closer while continuing the fight against the far-reaching, insidious organization that has taken so much good from the world.

Special thanks to BookSirens for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The story continues as Mira and Byron navigate this world of old enemies, family secrets and a personal relationship that seems to move two steps forward and then one step back. But then, isn’t that life? We all, to some extent, navigate these types of waters. With relatable characters in well imagined settings, The Constantine Capers is a series that will pull you in and carry you along. “The Veil of Death” is the 4th installment in an ongoing series. Best read in order, there is enough back story reference in each book to make it readable as a stand alone – but don’t shortchange yourself. Natalie Anderson is a compelling author, giving her characters unique storylines and room to grow. As I ‘see’ the scenes develop while I read I think, “This would make an awesome television series!”. But we all know – The book is always better.

a dark mystery that pulls you in and won’t let you go

Mira and Byron truly carry this story-both of them growing in surprising ways while facing dangers that kept me turning pages late into the night. I loved seeing how their strengths balance each other, and how their relationship deepens as the stakes rise.

The mystery in this book is darker and more intense, but it never loses the emotional heart. Mira’s determination and Byron’s loyalty made me care about every twist and setback. By the time the truth behind the Veil came out, I was completely hooked.

This is my favorite book so far in the series and I’m already excited to see where Mira and Byron go next. A fantastic read for fans of adventure, danger, and characters you can’t help but root for.

This was everything that I was looking for and enjoyed from the previous three books, it had that element that I was looking for in the Constantine Capers series. It uses the murder mystery element in a way that worked for the time-period and was engaged with the characters. Natalie Brianne has a strong writing style and was able to weave the characters into a world that I was hooked on since the first book. I enjoyed getting back into this world and left me wanting to read more from Natalie Brianne.

In the fourth book in the series Mira and Byron have to cope with the aftermath of the big revelation in the previous installment.

The happy occasion of Cyrus' and Loretta's wedding is ruined by an unexpected death that Mira finds immediately suspicious.

An investigation ensues, and a further plot by Circe starts taking form.

Well designed characters, a tangled plot and a mystery difficult to solve make this book a really nice reading.

This is the fourth book in the Constantine Capers series, but I felt it concentrated more on the background of Mira’s family than the actual case. I was hoping for a bit more mystery and clues so that I could figure it out. I like this series and the characters; I hope to see more of the underground organization of Circe in future books.

I liked that there was a recap of past books and cases so that if you haven’t read the other books you have an idea of what has taken place in the past. I received a copy of the book through BookSirens. All opinions in this review are my own.

I always wait for the next book in this series to arrive. I'm not a fan of continuous stories because most authors take too long between books. I understand they need time to write, etc., I'm just impatient. Yet, this author has this series down pat and each book comes out more interesting than the one before it and in a speedy timeframe. If you like mystery stories or romance or a combination of both, this is the series for you to grab. The main characters are always fully engaging and amazing.

In 1889 Paris, Mira longs for just a moment of peach but after everything that has happened, that just isn't going to happen. However Mira and Byron are pulled into more tangled webs when murder happens and now they are fighting against more than just The Order. Secrets need to be shared but just how much is safe? I loved this book and reading about Mira and Byron's relationship. The twists and turns pull the reader along until we find out the truth. Fantastic book! This book doesn’t seem to be the end of the series which needs to be read in order. There are secrets, a murder, a wedding and some PTSD to copy with in this storyline. The author does a good job of putting some of the highlights from previous books in this storyline to refresh the reader’s memory. I liked how the two main characters were able to have an open discussion with each other. It was a good read.

The Veil of Death had me hooked from the first page. I absolutely adore these characters and the way their stories keep unfolding. Natalie Brianne writes with such clever twists that I couldn’t put it down. She truly seems like a modern-day Agatha Christie. I think all readers will enjoy this "chilling" murder mystery. You'll know what I mean when you read it for yourself!

New kind of Mystery . Kept up interest to see what was going to happens next A lot of twist within the Family . Poor detective would have been completely lost without his helper. Untrained but just like a women she got things done . Very refreshing read . Not your typical murder story. Families do have hidden secrets. I recommend this 4 books series for all.
