Elizabeth Ashley is one of the world’s foremost essential oil researchers. Unlike other authorities in the aromatherapy field she looks at the medicine of a plant from every angle, searching for the very earliest archaeological evidence of its spiritual and medicinal uses, right up to the latest discoveries from clinical trials and the labs.
Her unique writing style is engaging and simple to follow, making her the first preference for both professionals and newbie therapists alike.
The daughter of one of the first aromatherapists in the UK, and one of the founder members of the International Federation of Aromatherapists, she began her professional journey into essential oils back in 1992. Following on from her diploma, she then completed her Advanced diploma in 1994, followed by certificates in Medical Dowsing and Medical Astrology and in 1996, was awarded The Business Excellence Award by Business Link.
In 1999, after working for seven years in the family aromatherapy business, she decided to break away and try something new, entering the world of commercial recruitment. There she learned a skill that set her apart from pretty much any other aromatherapist she has ever met…how to sell gently in a fiercely aggressive sales arena. In the 21st Century, this is the most perfect description of the essential oil’s world.
Every aspect of this is woven through The Secret Healer books, because Ashley fervently believes aromatherapy is set to become one of the single most important healing modalities on the planet, but that most therapists lack the skills to seize that opportunity since certifications and diplomas simply do not focus on business and how to speak the language of essential oils. Her books seek to level the playing field between fact and fiction, orthodox medicine and us!
The UK Director for the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists and an overseas speaker for the International Federation of Aromatherapists, she is also regular contributor for several professional and trade magazines. She writes about aromatherapy for Aromatika, where her work is translated into Hungarian, Aromaculture, and the NAHA Journal, and about sales and business for Holistic Therapist magazine, and has previously been professionally published by In Essence, the Aromatherapy Thymes, the IFA Journal and The New Zealand Register for Professional Therapists.
In 2018, together with Hungarian aromatherapist Gergely Hollodi she hosted the world’s biggest online summit for professional aromatherapists, Beyond The Essential Oil Recipe Summit, hosting interviews with of the other most respected authorities in aromatherapy.

I'm training to be an aromatherapist and found this book invaluable. It's clearly written, in a friendly, chatty style that's very accessible. I particularly liked the chapter on chemistry as the author breaks it down into straightforward information that is easy to understand. She goes into detail about massage, and this would be beneficial to those who have not learned this in a "hands on" way. I got this for free on Kindle and am extremely tempted to buy the hard copy as it was so good. There are other books in the series too, so I am now working my way through them.
I really enjoyed this book and I was so glad to see she shared information in it that others neglect. I felt confident she knows her profession and didn't throw a lot of useless or dangerous recipes out there. I've read several books by other experts, and really questioned their advise in their books, but I felt totally comfortable with the advise given in this book. Kindle friendly, easy navigation, and easy to understand. I loved the history of essential oils chapter, it didn't bore me to tears. I downloaded all her other books and I can't wait to get to them. Seriously if I could afford to get certified, I would right now, but money is tight right now. Being the only survivor of cancer in my family makes natural health prevention a must for me, and herbal and plant medicines just may have saved my life during chemo, so I know the power of plants for healing! If more people read this book for free, there would be less harmful information on essential oils posted on the internet, soap and bath makers like myself would be more careful in the amounts and types of essential oils used in bath products, and ordinary persons would treat themselves to natural remedies instead of commercial products. Case in point: I've used lavender essential oil neat on a third degree burn on the tip of my finger, and in three days the wound healed with little pain and no scar!!! Incredible, no commercial product could do that! I use lavender on my pillow at night to help me stay asleep, my prescribed sleeping aid can't do that,so my doctor was thrilled to stop prescribing them to me :). I'm thankful I found this book, I would pay for it, but would also love the hard copy to keep with my other reference books.
Whilst there are a few occasions where a proof read was needed, I like that this was fairly informal in places, whilst still communicating the facts and imposing wisdom. What is great about Ashley's writing is that it's just like she's there having a chat with you and that makes a subject that can be quite intense, easier and more fun to study. Love this book, and many others by this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it very informative on its own and loved all the extra links available for more information. Thank you for bringing all this knowledge together in one place. I am planning to start using essential oils to improve mine and my family's lives. This book has given me some wonderful information to start my journey.
This book contains some useful information on essential oils. It is more of an introduction rather than anything in depth. It is a shame though that it needs a good editor, due to the high number of typos and formatting errors. But I learnt a lot from it and recommend it if you are interested in the subject.
I am looking for a comprehensive go-to source for essential oil information as a "beginner". With over a thousand books on Amazon about this subject as the author notes, I have been through a number of them. I think I can stop with this one for now. The book offers much information in an organized manner.
I've learned a lot from this book! I'm so thankful that I found it for free on PlayBooks, to be honest, I wouldn't expect myself to buy a 400 pages book about aromotherapy while I'm just reading out of curiosity I'm not working in this field, but guess what? that was the fastest read ever! it was interesting & informative!
This will go into my library as reference material. Not being a practitioner can't vouch for the validity of the info however it does make for interesting reading. Currently researching the usage of my oil collection beyond the pretty scent.
This book is filled with excellent information, obviously the author is very knowledgeable about essential oils and I have learned much from her I wish the book had been more carefully edited. I know I’m picky but it’s because errors in editing are very distracting to me and interfere with the learning process.
Increadable , thank you. What a treasure . So much indepth information and wonderful recipies . Its like your very own fairy God Mother Left you her book of secret fairy plant medicine and magic to pass down and charish and love. wow what a gift . Thank you dearly . Love Karanas Z
I found the info helpful. Writing style engaging. The only thing I found myself shrinking away from was the whole new age ...occasional traditional faith jab. Overall...the blends sound intriguing and the oil overviews useful
This is such a heartfelt written book. Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your passion and knowledge with me. It is going to be my aromatherapy bible from now on! Thank you!!!
This book is an extremely thorough resource on essential oils. The author goes over the various chemistry behind essential oils and provide details for all methods of creating essential oils.
It's an amazing book, so wonderfully written. Her knowledge is so evident throughout, and she makes it all so accessible and so very interesting. This book is the book I wish I had when training for my diploma.
So much info to rely on and refer back to. I have been using essential oils and carrier oils for some time now to treat various ailments for myself and friends. Yet here's a new apocathery of vital oils I've yet to explore. Can't wait.
This is a very useful guide to aromatherapy oils with clear references to contra indications and safety considerations. I would recommend as a quick guide.
Since I am just beginning to experiment with essential oils and aromatherapy, this book was quite helpful in this stage. It will be a good reference tool, too.
