Sage is an Aubade, a scholar with little magic but a brilliant mind, secretly working with her friend Dervla to democratize magic—a dangerous pursuit in a kingdom ruled by the calculating King Cado. When a violent explosion destroys her workplace, Sage is forced to flee to the royal palace, navigating court intrigue while avoiding a deadly rebellion determined to exploit her discoveries.

*Aubade Rising is the first book in the Trials of Trevesiga* *series, and perfect for fans of:*
- High-stakes fantasy - Political intrigue - Forbidden magic - Slow-burn romance - Enemies-to-lovers - He falls first - STEM-minded FMC - Witty banter
Edit: They changed the blurb. Did they hear me, or was it a coincidence? Either way, awesome. Leaving the original review below. ----------------- Ok I need to get this out of the way: I hate the blurb. This doesn’t affect my rating in any way but it’s a pet peeve; don’t compare your novel and characters to a bunch of others! It stands on its own, and either way you don’t want readers constantly comparing what they are reading to other books instead of just enjoying. Also, I think its better to include more information about the novel in the blurb instead hype and marketing!
I also read an ARC, so its possible that (and other things) may change before the true release.
Anyways! I liked this novel. It was surprisingly easy-reading for a fantasy novel (I usually need to somewhat slog through the start until I figure out the fictional world) which was nice, although there were also a few elements that I never quite figured out which could have been explained better. Some things I needed to somewhat guess at from context, but there was enough provided that I think it worked out in the end. In an overall sense I would say I liked this, but it was missing some little things here and there which prevented me from giving it 5-stars.
There were some continuity errors (particularly with backstory) which tripped me up but didn’t end up affecting the story too much so its ok. Some of the characters actions or dialogue were somewhat off at times, and the protagonist was surprisingly incompetent in a few places to the point it took me a bit out of the story (she initially planned on crossing the kingdom alone with no supplies, resources, plans, or routes?). The protagonist was also shockingly horny (ill say it!) for every guy that was important enough to get a description, which I thought was funny but a bit over the top.
This is very much a “book one” type of a situation. I think that my lasting impression will depend on how the next book(s) end up going. On its own I think this novel was lacking a little bit in a few places and left me feeling unsatisfied, HOWEVER it did an excellent job of grabbing my attention and making me want to start reading the next one right now. A lot of the time a series is better judged as a whole instead of as individual books and that’s the vibe I am getting from this one. That cliffhanger(?) though, ugh. I have a few guesses about things that I am very much hoping will get validated, and therefore I am already waiting in line for the next book.
Thank you to the author for providing a free ARC. This honest review was left voluntarily.
A huge thank you to Hayley Pierce for the ARC of Aubade Rising in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Wow, where to begin. If you’re a fan of fantastic world building, unusual magic systems, and a clever, feisty FMC who knows her own mind, this book is for you. I gasped, I cried, I yelled ‘what?!’ so loud my dog barked. The many twists and turns kept it unpredictable throughout and ohhh, that ending!
FMC Sage is a highly intelligent academic with forbidden magic, doing her best with the cards she’s been dealt. She’s thrown into turmoil when rebellion strikes but continues to land on her feet thanks to her ambition and sheer determination to make the world a better place. There’s ups and downs and everything in between, but Sage is a FMC you won’t want to miss out on getting to know.
The pacing is fast and we quickly meet other characters, including the mysterious, guarded MMC with a jaded past and secrets to discover. At the beginning, I found myself questioning which of the male characters would become the MMC and I really enjoyed trying to guess! You won’t be disappointed by identifying the MMC. Handsome, selfless and protective, I adored this character and that’s all I’ll say - you won’t find any spoilers here from me!
Tropes: Hunted for her knowledge Wanted for her intellect A violent rebellion Enemies to reluctant allies to lovers He falls first Found family Forbidden magic Political intrigue
My best bits:
Aubade Rising is engaging and descriptive without unnecessary frills and I greatly appreciate that in a book.
The imagery is genius, you can truly imagine yourself in the world. I’m so impressed with all the moving parts and the magic system - it’s clear a lot of love has been poured into world creation.
The political intrigue from the POV of a smart, capable FMC like Sage is so refreshing, no ditsy, naive confusion in this book.
There’s a good dose of mystery and I loved that so many questions were answered while leaving enough unsaid for the next book.
The romance felt natural and not at all forced. As much as I love the fated mate trope, this kind of romance is much more relatable and I really enjoyed it.
Overall:
It was an absolute pleasure to read, I kept reading long past when I should have been asleep! I can’t wait for the next book - a brilliant debut novel by Hayley Pierce and I’m super excited to see what comes next.
This review is from an ARC of Aubade Rising. First, I want to say how impressed I am with Hayley Pierce for creating this world. It’s clear she poured a lot of effort into the ideas, the magic system, and the vivid descriptions. Her writing style is strong, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The ending in particular left me eager for the next book in the series.
What I enjoyed: A strong FMC who is smart, feisty, and ambitious. There’s still much to learn about her, which makes me excited for future installments.
Accessible and creative world-building, with unique magic dynamics.
A compelling politics and rebellion storyline that added depth and tension.
What I wanted more of: More dialogue throughout the book, especially in the middle sections.
Additional character descriptions, particularly for Sage and other key figures. I wasn’t always able to picture age, appearance, or defining features, which could limit fanart or visualization.
Clearer distinctions between the different types of magic (channeling vs. wielding, etc.). I was able to follow along, but more detail would have strengthened the world-building.
A stronger romantic element. While there was some banter and flirtation, I wouldn’t personally categorize this as a romantasy. It read more as a fantasy with light romantic undertones—which seems intentional on the author’s part. And honestly, that cliffhanger reinforced that focus on plot over romance!
For context: I tend to love books like Heartless Hunter, the Empyrean series, Metal Slinger, and Quicksilver. My idea of romantasy usually involves slow burns, yearning, and plenty of swoon-worthy banter. Aubade Rising felt more like the foundation of an epic fantasy series, prioritizing world-building and setting the stage for what’s to come. That in itself is exciting, even if it’s less romance-heavy. There is one chapter with spice (Ch. 61), which I’d rate about 2.5/5.
Overall: This feels like the promising beginning of a series with a lot of potential, and I’ll definitely be picking up the next book.
I’m really thankful to have received an ARC of Aubade Rising! I thought the premise was really interesting, and the ending completely caught me off guard (in the best way). For a debut, it was a fun read.
That said, there were a few things I struggled with. I would have liked more descriptions of the characters, since it was sometimes hard to picture them, and Sage often read a bit younger than I think she was supposed to. I also felt the romance developed very quickly—I would’ve loved more buildup there. It’s more of a personal preference but I would have enjoyed a bit more romance sprinkled in there.
On the positive side, I really enjoyed Sage’s strong, opinionated voice and the world building. And again, that ending… I didn’t see it coming at all!
Hayley Pierce has beautifully created a fantasy world where magic exists but only the powerful Mordros can wield it. The Aubades and Zephyrs are seen as inferior and weak and their magic has been forbidden, however our strong minded, intelligent and ambitious FMC Sage is working on an experiment that could change the future for everyone.
I was intrigued in this story from the start. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the different types of magic and people but it was explained well. I would love to know more about the different types of people and their magic in depth though.
The story was filled with action, terrorism, experiments, mystery, romance and devastation. It kept my attention throughout even though it was slow paced at times. I loved the ending. It completely took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I did guess who the traitor was but there was still a lot about their story that surprised me. My only criticism of the ending was I felt that the pace overall of the book was quite slow and then the ending happened all of a sudden at a much faster pace. I think I would have preferred it to have been in more detail.
Character wise. I liked Sage, although she was very stubborn at times and thought she could take on the world by herself when really she needed to ask for help. I loved Eskar, strong, moody and distant but there’s so much more to him. I’m dying to know more about Cedar and Howl. There’s definitely more to tell there. Don’t even get me started on the King. I need his back story please.
I enjoyed the slow burn romance throughout but the romance was definitely not the main focus of the book. I gave it 2 🌶️ as there is an explicit scene chapter which you will enjoy.
Overall this was a solid 4 stars for me and I’ll be watching out for book 2.
I want to thank Hayley Pierce for letting me read this ARC.
I thoroughly enjoyed the world building in this book. The magic system was unique, and it was easy to sink into the story.
That said, I did feel like the romance was missing some of the tension, yearning, and banter I usually look for between the main characters. Their relationship didn’t quite grip me the way I hoped it would.
Still, the story overall was engaging, and I think readers who enjoy richly built fantasy worlds with a lyrical style will find a lot to love here.
First off, the immersive-world building is fantastic! The details made me feel like Trevesiga was real. The magic system is very well crafted. I felt this book was heavy on the politics more than the romance.
Sage (FMC) smart, ambitious woman who wants to balance the scales for equality among the Zyphers, Aubades, and Mordros. Eskar (MMC) broody, powerful water yielding guard who demands all or nothing from Sage, and he will wait patiently for her.
I loved how the enemies to reluctant allies to lovers was a good progression and not rushed. The spice was so good that I wish there was more. The twist at the ending is heart-breaking, but it sets up for the next book.
I can't wait to read book 2 in this series. Thank you @hayleypiercewrites for gifting me this ARC!
Thank you so much Hayley Pierce for an ARC of Aubade Rising, I hope you are super proud of it because I loved reading it!
A unique magic system with lots of country politics, a rebellion, betrayal and romance subplots. Maybe a bit more explanation earlier on about the different magics and the difference between channeling and wielding.
Well written, good character growth, heartbreak, honestly this book is so good. I enjoyed it so much but the ending destroyed me. Destroyed by the cliffhanger! I would very, very much like book 2 very soon!
I read it in 2 days, would have read it in 1 but I did have to leave the house yesterday - without my kindle. I was hooked from the start.
Please read this book, it is so well written with an interesting storyline and compelling characters!
Thank you to the author for kindly giving me an E-Arc in exchange for a honest review.
I was immediately drawn to wanting to apply for an ARC for this book- the front cover design drew my eye as the illustration style & colour scheme was completely different to what I have seen before. The blurb piqued my interest and I am so glad I was accepted for this ARC.
This book is great if you are a fan of: politics, enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, unique world building, Strong FMC & forbidden magic.
What I loved about this book: * The authors writing style is so immersive and easy to read. Sometimes with fantasy books it takes me a while to get used to who is who and the word building. I did not find this an issue in Aubade Rising at all. A lot of thought and effort from the author went into creating such a visual world and unique magic system. I think Trevesiga is one of my favourite worlds I have ever read about. * The magic system and the difference between wielding & channelling was very interesting concept for me! I’m hoping this will be explored more in Book Two! * Sage: one of my favourite FMC representations: strong & feisty & a little bit reckless (go on a quest across the kingdoms with zero supplies love it!). I also loved her forbidden magic and found it such an interesting layer to her character and how it helps shape her. * Eskar: powerful broody water wielder?! HELLO NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND 😍 * The love triangle going on between The King/Sage/Eskar gave me Throne of Glass & Dorian/Caelena/Chaol vibes and I AM HERE FOR IT. * The political landscape of rebels vs royal court was very well done adding excellent tension in the storyline. * The cliffhanger and twist at the end = me a heartbroken sobbing mess. Literally was not what I was expecting and made me very emotional! HOW CAN IT END LIKE THAT WHEN IS BOOK 2 COMING OUT AS I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS I NEED ANSWERED
Favourite Quotes: “I won’t do half measures with you Sage. If I’m in, I’m all in. I’ll wait until you choose me for the right reasons”
“I don’t think they will be following. I hope they managed to stab each other”
Firstly, I would like to thank the author for the ARC I received and to note that this review is voluntary.
I was drawn to Aubade Rising because I love elemental magic systems and fantasy books with political intrigue and a sprinkle of romance!
I really enjoyed the book, but there were a few things that stopped me from totally loving it.
The Good Stuff: In particular, I enjoyed the ending, which for me is quite unusual, as I am often a harsh critic of cliff-hangers. It's a personal pet peeve. However, I thought the twists and turns of the ending of this book were bold and well done and it makes me want to pick up the next book when it is released. I like to be surprised and even though I had predicted some of the outcomes at the end it had a few twists I hadn't seen coming which was great!
The magic system was interesting and I liked the concept. I would have loved to get more depth of detail about the different types of magic and how it all works but I think the first book sets up for more exploration of this in the sequel, so that is exciting!
What didn’t work for me: The book did a great job of introducing you to the world quickly and efficiently. You are taken to a number of different locations within the first few chapters and the pace is fast, and it makes the world expand early on. I think this could definitely help some readers feel immersed immediately but for me, it didn’t quite work that way. As someone more used to a slower paced narrative, I felt that by skipping through locations I was missing the time and detail to fully understand the context of the world the characters are living in, which made me struggle to understand the characters and their choices. I think this stopped me from fully connecting with the characters and investing in their relationships.
Based on the excerpt and seeing things on social media I was stoked for this book. I enjoyed it- but I did not love it.
2.75 Stars
The FMC- Sage is a brilliant scholar who has been funded by a woman named Dervla. They are working on changing dynamics of politics that allow only one type of magic to be used and instead are hoping to change the way magic is perceived. I felt some issues with the characters behaving inconsistently. There was an overall lack of character descriptions. ( I really don't think I knew the main character Sage had blonde hair until there was a moment when she needed to change her appearance.) It was an interesting concept, I felt like there were a lot of...I don't want to say plot holes because this is an apparent first of a series... I have many questions. Other questions I had after reading:
-How does Dervla know the King and Eskar? -Why on meeting Sage would the king offer her a "counsel" position? -Why would he sponsor research without having any clue what it is? -Why doesn't the King or Eskar make sage disclose her research when it is very apparent she was targeted by rebels and the only thing she has going for her of interest is her research? -How do Cedar and Howl know each other? -Why is Cedar mad that Howl and Sage know each other? -How does Eskar know Howl? -Why does Eskar care about the safety of Howl? -Why did they let Sage go on a journey knowing she was a target for rebels? -Why did Sage not do any planning for her journey? -How did Dervla and the King know to help with the Carthian (probably spelt that wrong) leadership? -When rebels find Sage, how come she doesn't think of the only other person who knows her research?
Which leads me to the last part of the romance- the book gives possible love triangle vibes- the king seems interested and flirty with Sage on occasion, Eskar the guard is interested though he is distant and cold with her majority of the story. Sage seems attracted to them both. Yet instead of a triangle, we have this odd situation with Eskar: Early we hear that Eskar hooked up with someone in the library. Yet later in the book he is saying if he is to get involved with Sage he will wait until she is all in- he refuses to just be a fling or used to help her forget some bad shit. And then- bad shit happens, and she says help me forget and Eskar suddenly is like yes! I have been waiting for you to ask that! I just felt that the dynamic was not quite right. Also with how the relationship ended.....
This is a fast-paced fantasy book that plunges you into a world where there is a divide between those who can channel their magic and 'attitudes' and those who cannot. I really enjoyed the world-building in this book! Would have loved more of it too:)
I really enjoyed reading about our FMC, Sage, and how she is on a quest to solve this inequality and balance the scales of power once and for all. She leads extensive research, using her intellect to guide her, but when she is suddenly forced to navigate court life as an advisor to the King, she has more to deal with than ever. All under the watchful eye of a brooding and powerful MMC, Eskar🤭🤭
Rebel antics begin to threaten those at power, all whilst Sage is against the clock to figure out how to help people like herself, the rebels' sudden interest in her makes this increasingly difficult!
I enjoyed the pacing of this book, though sometimes I felt like I was left behind (which is probs entirely my fault as my attention span tends to suffer at times lmao🙈) but I loved every minute of this book, the second half definitely stood out to me moreso!!! I have so many questions that I hope are going to be answered in the next book which I cannot wait forrrrr!!!!
Also....what's going on with Sagey and the King?? That was intriguing teeheeee....
Thank you Hayley Pierce for providing me with the opportunity to read your debut novel!?!?!!! I am truly so honoured <3 All opinions are my own and done with complete free will😄🤗
I really enjoyed this! Aubade Rising was interesting right from the beginning to me. There were plenty of court politics, secrets and forbidden magic tied in with themes of magical inequality, plus a small amount of romance. I would say this was more a fantasy with a sprinkle of romance rather than an outright romantasy - if you prefer plot over tonnes of spice this book should hit the spot! I enjoyed the simmering tension between our FMC & MMC but it wasn’t the focal point of the story, rather a welcome addition.
The FMC (Sage) is not your typical fantasy heroine - she’s intellectual, ambitious, refuses to accept the status quo of her world and strives to make it a better place through her science & research which immediately earned this book some extra credit for me. She was flawed and could be reckless at times but i found that made her relatable (we’re not all sensible, sword wielding badasses!). The MMC (Eskar) however was definitely a badass and i loved the little twist when we found out who he really was/what he was capable of! 👀
Now for the really fun part… y’all i got METAL SLINGERED! I don’t like to compare books but ive you’ve read Metal Slinger you know exactly where I’m coming from when i say i was BLINDSIDED by the ending 🥲 I literally threw my book down and shouted “NOOOO!” Before immediately picking it back up and continuing reading (in disbelief) lol. It’s been a while since i got surprised like that in a book!
Overall this was a solid debut which i enjoyed, there were a few tiny niggles that someone more critical may notice more than i did but they didn’t detract from the story at all for me. I’m still thinking about the ending a few days later too - Hayley lmk where i should send my therapy bill?? 😅
Would i read it again? Yes and i look forward to book 2!
I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book and was not paid for my review.
Irrevocably changing the world is a fool’s dream. But for Sage, an ambitious academic wielding forbidden Aubade magic, the possibility is real. Aubade Rising is a fantasy romance, think grown-up Hermione Granger, plucked from her lab and dropped into the political scheming of Game of Thrones.
This story cleverly blends political intrigue with a slow-burn, reluctant allies-to-lovers romance, all set against a stormy coastal backdrop inspired by the Cornish coastline.
I was thrilled to read this ARC. I love an ambitious, intelligent FMC who fights for what she believes in, and Sage did not disappoint. She’s knocked down (and out) more than once, but she keeps getting back up. She’s not the saviour of the world, but she has something to say about the state of it - and she’s not afraid to say it to power.
The pacing is fast, you’re never left lingering too long on any one event. At times I felt like I was scrambling to keep up, but it was handled so well that I didn’t mind the whirlwind.
The romance is slow burn, with a few curious twists (what is going on with the King!?). But the relationship with the Captain? Delicious. A grumpy, guarded MMC who holds back until he demands all or nothing, and patiently waits for his all.
And the ending? It destroyed me. Heartbreak. Shock. Cliffhanger hell. I need book two. Immediately.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - shocked, heartbroken, begging for more.
I absolutely devoured this book from start to finish!
A huge thank you to Hayley for kindly sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, the cover is absolutely stunning, it immediately drew me in. The world building is just as impressive: rich, immersive, and full of intricate details that elevate the story and make it feel truly alive. The magic system is refreshingly unique and the layers of political intrigue kept me hooked.
Sage is such a fiery, compelling protagonist. I love how self aware she is, recognising both her strengths and flaws, which makes her incredibly relatable and easy to root for. While the romance takes a backseat to the main plot, I actually appreciated that choice as I tend to prefer a strong plot focus, and this story absolutely delivers on that front.
The plot twists were phenomenal! I’m usually pretty good at predicting where a story is headed, but this one kept me guessing right until the end, and I loved every second of it. The pacing is fast and engaging, yet despite the book’s length, it never feels rushed or overwhelming.
Overall, this was an excellent read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next. Congratulations to Hayley on a truly impressive debut, what an incredible story!
Aubade Rising is fast paced, intriguing, and lots of fun to read! It’s the type of book that I just keep wanting to come back to because I need to know what happens next!
The slow burn romance is slow burning and damn do they have me hook, line, and sinker 😆 I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for them to be at each other's throats and oh my gosh the payoff is so good!!
The magic is also super interesting and I’ve enjoyed learning the differences and what has happened to make the hierarchy what it is in the book! I’m very intrigued by what our girl Sage can do and I always love the idea of light based magic 👀
Let me also take a minute to talk about Sage… I LOVE HER! She’s so ambitious and smart and I appreciate endlessly that she has prickly edges. I adore a character that isn’t afraid to tell people off and knows what she’s worth and how intelligent she is. Plus, I am living for her back and forth with a certain surly Captain 😆 So good!! Can’t wait to get a physical trophy of this book for my shelf 😍
HOLY HELL that ending was a roller coaster and emotions, and I want to avoid spoilers so I won't say anything other than HOLY CRAPBALLS was not expecting that!!
I’d highly recommend this book for all the reasons listed above and more! Happy reading :)
This was a fast, easy entry into a new fantasy world. Sage, a brilliant scientist with forbidden magic, stands out as a determined lead who wants to change how magic is used in Trevesiga. The political tension between rebels and the royal court stays sharp, and the slow-burn pull between Sage and Eskar adds extra spark without taking over the plot. The magic system—especially the difference between channeling and wielding—feels fresh and full of possibility, and I hope the next book explores it in more depth.
Some elements need polish. A few continuity slips and thin character details pulled me out of the story. Dialogue can feel scarce, which keeps side characters from fully coming alive. Sage makes a few choices that seem careless for someone so smart, but I expect more growth from her going forward.
This is a strong series opener and fantastic debut. The rebel storyline, inventive magic, and political stakes hooked me from the start and kept me turning pages. The cliffhanger sets up the sequel well and leaves plenty of room for bigger twists. I’m ready to see where Sage’s research and the shifting power in Trevesiga go next.
Thank you to Hayley Pierce for sending me an ARC of Aubade Rising!
This debut blends forbidden magic, political intrigue, and rebellion with a heroine who’s sharp, ambitious, and unapologetically brilliant. I found it easy to sink into: the world was approachable and the magic system immediately grabbed my attention.
The FMC Sage is such compelling, strong willed and fierce. She does make some reckless choices but it keeps the story interesting. Her dynamics with the MMC Eskar, the broody Captain of the Guard, and with the King gave me major Chaol/Dorian vibes from Throne of Glass. The romance is fairly light making the book lean more towards fantasy than romantasy but still has the enemies to allies to lovers trope.
There were a few moments where I wanted more specifically clearer detail in the magic system that took me a bit time as the book went on to figure out but the ending absolutely delivered. The final chapters pulled everything together in a way that redeemed the slower parts for me, brought in an intense ending and left me so excited for the next book.
“How can I win when someone is always looking at my cards?”
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Aubade Rising is the story of Sage, an academic whose research will balance the scales in a world where certain types of magic are outlawed. She her work catches the attention of the king, she is invited to live in the capital city as the kings alchemist. Unfortunately her work has also caught the attention of the rebels and the only way to continue and keep the kingdom safe is to go on a perilous journey with the infuriatingly handsome Captain Devath.
Overall I enjoyed reading about Sage’s journey. I thought the writing was solid and I never felt like I didn’t understand the word or the magic system.
I think parts of it were just a bit slow paced for me personally, there were numerous times when days or weeks jumped past without much comment and I’m a bit confused about the time span for the book as a whole.
I didn’t see the twist at the end coming and that was a shock - I will likely pick up the second book for that.
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC copy I am immensely grateful!
Sage is a scientist working in an Academy on forbidden research which will change the country for the better. However, the Academy is attacked by rebels and her and her sponsor, Devra, flee to the capital for safety. However, at the capital it’s hard to know who to trust. As the king tries to figure out where the rebels are, Sage has to decide if the handsome Verax is more infuriating or interesting and whether his secrets will break her or if she can move past the past.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WOW, what a twist at the end. I should have seen it coming. In hindsight it was obvious but I just wasn’t expecting it to go that way! Talk about ending on a cliff hanger! I can’t wait to read more to see what happens next.
This book is fast paced and has some interesting world building. The only complaint I had was how fast she was able to move on from the past. Even though there was angst, I didn’t feel like it was enough to feel real? But other than, great plot and again killer twists at the end at the last battle leaving me on the edge of my seat!
This first book is clearly the foundation for something epic. The pacing is intentional, the world-building immersive, and the characters oh, the characters feel like people I know. I was pulled into their lives, their struggles, and their secrets from the very first page.
The writing is sharp and evocative, with emotional depth that hits hard. The character growth is beautifully done, and the heartbreak? It’s real. I was not prepared for the ending. That cliffhanger? Brutal. I need book two immediately.
This story delivers everything I crave in fantasy: - Hunted for her knowledge, wanted for her intellect - A violent rebellion and forbidden magic - Enemies to reluctant allies to lovers (he falls first!) - Found family and political intrigue woven into every page
If you love high-stakes fantasy with emotional punch and slow-burn romance, this book is a must-read. Just be warned: the ending will haunt you until book two arrives.
3.5/5 stars First off, I want to thank Hayley Pierce for sending me an E-Arc, so grateful to be given the opportunity to read this. I thought the magic system was really unique and enjoyed reading more about it as the book progressed. I feel that this book was setting everything up for the sequel and we're going to see more from the magic system and see the full extent of what can happen and what's possible. The last 30% of the book was fast paced and had me totally sucked in. I definitely need more and am excited for book two! There are definitely some twists that I need to know more about!! I wish there was more description of the characters, I didn't know Sage was blonde until she disguised herself. I guess it also gives the reader more freedom to picture the characters as they see them in their mind. I feel like we're going to see more growth from Sage in book two and I can't wait to see where it leads her.
A slow burn, epic fantasy with lots of political intrigue.
-He falls first -Found family -Bodyguard MMC -Forbidden Magic -Rebellion & Political Intrigue -Book 1 -Spice - but slooow burn, im talking till the last 10% hehehe
This story was fast paced, unique in its magic, had crazy slow burn (but in the best way), lots of political intrigue - I would say more on the question, politics and fantasy side than a romantasy (just an FYI for my romantasy lovers). This story was so much more than the romance side of it - I loved the journey our MC's take.
The ending?!? PURE torture! I kept flipping pages thinking - this can't be it!
The writing was so descriptive and well thought out, I felt like I could see it all!
This was SUCH an amazing start to a series, and I can't wait for book 2!
Highly recommend for any fantasy lovers, especially those that love a good rebellion and a heavy dose of political intrigue!
This book was definitely intriguing. The unique magic system and world building that Pierce developed was fantastic. Sage, the female main character, is doing the best she can with the cards that have been dealt to you. All she wants to do is make the world a better place and you can't help but root for her. I wasn't expecting some of the things that happened and that's a good thing. It kept me guessing right up until the end.
I would have like to have been given a little more background behind the different types of magic. However, I was able to follow along without any issues at all.
Overall, I really enjoyed Aubade Rising and look forward to seeing what comes next for Sage.
Tropes you will find: ◾Hunted for her knowledge ◾A violent rebellion ◾Forbidden magic ◾Political intrigue
I received a copy of this book as an ARC reader, and I'm very grateful to the author for her trust.
The story involves such exciting tropes as enemies to friends to lovers, crystal magic, royal court, secret enemy lair, elemental magic, moral dilemmas, and others.
The female protagonist is featured as a strong, stubborn, and somewhat sassy lady who knows what she's after. Her save-the-kingdom quest is streaked with adventure, risk, and romance. She also fights for equal rights for her people.
The protagonist's sidekicks are all complex characters, each interesting and appealing in their own way. Be ready for a twist of betrayed expectations here and there ;)
The romance part is mainly focused on the strong animal magnetism spark between the protagonist and her quest partner, which adds a thrilling touch to their slowly developing relationship.
The world building is well thought-out and layered. It's served to the reader in portions here and there throughout the story without information dumping.
Dialogs. I would have loved to get more of this juice of character communication. This is the part that could have added more depth to the story and, especially, its characters. It would be a great alternative way to give the reader more information and character background without directly narrating it through the single-viewpoint first person story telling, which is therefore limited to the knowledge and assumptions of the protagonist. A good dialog can provide the reader with intimate, detailed insights into characters' inner worlds, which may feel relatable, and it also allows for connecting with the characters through whatever could be going on in their hearts and minds. And since first-person narrative limits the scope of knowledge about the rest of the characters' thoughts and feelings, a well-crafted dialog is just the tool to rely on!
Other than the dialog part, I enjoyed the story and was surprised more than once with all the plot twists. The story ended leaving me curious to find out where it'd head after. I should say I foresee for the protagonist to go on breaking hearts and rules alike, although I may be wrong about this one :)
I hope my feedback is helpful to both the readers and the author! Congratulations to the author on the well done debut!
Aubade Rising by Hayley Pierce throws readers straight into the middle of rebellion and an unfamiliar magic system, which can feel a bit disorienting at first. Personally, I would have liked more background earlier on—but once the story settles, the pieces fall into place beautifully.
Sage’s journey to fight for equality and peace in her divided world is both compelling and heartfelt. Pierce’s worldbuilding feels vivid and believable, and the characters are layered in ways that make their choices resonate. By the time I was fully immersed, I didn’t want to put it down.
The ending is absolutely heart-breaking, but it sets up the next book in the series perfectly. A strong, emotional read that leaves me eager for what’s to come.
📖✨ Review: Aubade Rising by Hayley Pierce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (ARC) Magic is outlawed. Rebellion is brewing. And Sage, a sharp, strategic academic with forbidden Aubade magic, is caught right in the middle. 🌀👑 This book had everything I love: forbidden power, political tension, a slow-burn romance, and a main character who knows how to play the game. Sage’s rise through the court was clever, dangerous, and so satisfying to watch unfold. 💥 I wanted just a bit more history behind the magic system, but overall—this debut delivers. Can’t wait to see what comes next in Trevesiga. 🔥 Thank you @hayley.pierce.writes for the ARC! 💛 #AubadeRising #ARCReview #FantasyReads #PoliticalFantasy #Bookstagram #IndieAuthor #ForbiddenMagic #DebutFantasy #ReadingRec #4StarRead #HayleyPierce
I received an ARC of this book and was super excited to read it. Sadly, it left me a little wanting.
I hit the half-way point of this book and was still unclear on the overall plot. I liked the concept of the magic in this world, but felt like the detail was lacking. This was sadly a common thread through the book for me.
There were a lot of unanswered questions, but I feel not to the benefit of the story. I also felt that there was no build up to the ending, and instead it felt quite rushed and un-fulfilling.
Lastly, I felt the characters were lacking and inconsistent - not in the sense of character growth, but going against their own core beliefs.
I think, with a bit more time, and a bit more detail, this could be great. But sadly, for me, it was lacking.
