Nina Archer battles memories of a trauma that occurred twelve years ago...

With plans to move to North Carolina, she hopes to separate herself from her mother, whose excessive drinking is becoming unbearable. Then suddenly, fate steps in to help her heal in a way she would never think possible. While running a race in Juno Beach, Nina finds herself next to a man whom she's immediately attracted to.

Wes Ladner, the same man she dreamt about one year ago...
Wes is focused on his writing, and has no time for a woman. But the night before they met, he dreamt of Nina. Although they come from two very different worlds neither of them can deny the sparks that fly between them.

As her time runs out to make a decision, Nina wonders if she's been given the chance to come to terms with her past, and accept a gift that some never receive--true love.

This story is about something bad happening, trying to deal with what has happened and then trying to move on. Sometimes moving on isn't as easy as some people think it is, especially when you don't really have anyone to turn too when you need it the most.

Nina Archer is trying to deal with a major trauma and she doesn't have her dad to turn too, he has past away and her mother is a drunk and isn't any help. Nina also has dreamt of a guy a year ago and she can't forget that dream. Nina meets the exact guy she dreamed of and is instantly attracted but she is so afraid of getting hurt again, she isn't sure what she needs to do. She wants to quit hurting, to quit always remembering that awful night and this guy seems to be the key to helping her move on. It's like they are meant to be together and they both are on the same page. These feelings scare Nina but she knows she must move on with getting over the trauma and getting away from her mom.

Wes Ladner is a writer and that's all he has time for now a days. He also has dreamt of a girl who seems to be meant for him but just maybe it's just a dream and nothing more than that. Until he meets Nina, and that's when he realizes the girl he dreamt of was her. He can't stop thinking of her. Always wants to be with her, to help her, too love her for always. He helps her realize that just because bad things happen doesn't mean she always has to be sad. They both compliment each other and both need each other to help one another with their problems. Fate seems to have brought them together. I love stories of people learning to move on after tragedy's and this is about a woman that ends up falling in love and that helps her to move on.

I was invested in this story and it evoked emotion from me. I could feel Nina's pain and wanting something better than what her past gave her and what she had at this time. Life has a way of putting people in our lives when we need them the most. I believe this is how Wes ends up in Nina's life when she needs it the most.

I had a lot of problems with When I Dream of You.

- Nina.

- The instalove was the main one. It doesn't matter the circumstances, instalove just doesn't work. Its unrealistic and who wants to read about characters that they cannot even relate to?

- Nina.

- The romantic interest. I cannot remember his name...

- Nina.

- How such heavy and important subjects - rape, child abuse, alcoholism - were shoved into this short story with no development or realistic conclusion. Another one of my pet hates is romanticized mental illnesses (such as depression or PTSD) or books that use rape, abuse and such things to make their characters "saveable". I know I bring that up a lot but it really gets on my nerves. I didn't feel like this book handled those topics in the right way at all.

- Nina.

- The ending. Why was everything left so unresolved and open when you could have written more? This is less than 100 pages. There is plenty of time to wrap things up.

- Nina.

- [The end sex scene. He - I honest to God cannot remember the romantic interest's name - couldn't have waited to get to know Nina a bit more, slowly build up their relationship through levels of intimacy, before sleeping with her? He knows her past. They shouldn't have rushed everything with the way she was feeling. (hide spoiler)]

- Nina's mum.

- Nina. Did I mention that I didn't like our protagonist?

Overall, if read and enjoy the stereotyped new adult genre - or enjoyed Blue Notes or Brave - with the whole instalove romance, troubled male, "abusive past" damsel-in-distress and heavy (and unrealistic) romantic plotline, then this is the book for you.

Novella dealing with difficult subject matter. Nina is a young girl with an alcoholic mother. She has been raped in the past, and her mother was abused by her own father.

Nina meets Wes, but is afraid of getting too close.

Original Blog Post: Blog Tour & eARC Review: When I Dream of You by Rosa Sophia

I never expected that Rosa Sophia would write about such a heavy topic in When I Dream of You. The blurb itself sounds adult, yet entertaining, but it's dealing with a subject that most try to not even think about. Yet rape, sexual abuse, physical and mental abuse, and alcoholism are prevalent problems worldwide. With all the people affected by them, it's a wonder that not enough is being done about it. Books that talk about it are a great help though, and I'd willingly promote any that would make more people aware of these horrible situations.

Nina was abused from a young age, first by an alcoholic widowed mother, then by a friend. She'd been bullied and undergone traumas that other people can't even imagine. Everything's failed, including her therapist, so now she's just coping with it and hoping the next day would be a better normal.

Running is her therapy, allowing herself to block out any negativism and simply get lost in the mechanical rhythms of her pace. During one of these runs, she meets someone who seems familiar, someone she's dreamt about before. And strangely enough, Wes sees the familiar in her too, having dreamt of her as well. What are the chances? This does seem like it's fated to happen.

But Nina has a deeper problem. She doesn't believe in fate, or in love either. Despite being literally the man of her dreams, it's hard for her to trust in herself enough that their budding relationship won't fail or that Wes won't be destroyed because of her.

Rapists aren't always older predators, neither are they seedy-looking monsters. They're usually an innocuous person, unmemorable, or worse, a close associate. They could be an upstanding member of society, a classmate, or workmate. These seemingly innocent people are experts at hiding behind masks, pretending they're perfect and all is right with the world, while their victims are trapped in nightmares that seemingly have no end.

Sexual abuse is a blight on society and always will be. It's not something new, yet is so taboo that most try to bury the memories, pretend they don't exist. It doesn't matter whether the perpetrator is doing something illegal, it's the power behind them that makes it disappear which allows them to continue, and harm, and hurt again. While there are those working against it, more often than not it's a skeleton that most families hide in shame or denial.

All of that, including the results of untreated trauma, are discussed but no judgements are made. It's up to the reader to decide what works although Nina has apparently found what helps her. When I Dream of You, despite being a novella, goes remarkably in-depth, where Rosa Sophia draws you into a world that hopefully less people will need to endure if society could only do what is right.

Of course I love Rosa Sophia's writing style, but this book is just like her last book I read, only the characters have different names.

Nina Archer lives in Florida, loves to run, has an alcoholic parent and she's scared of intimacy. Sounds just like Amalie Jarvis in "Meet Me in the Garden." Oh and Nina's a writer and so is her love interest, Wesley Lander. Again, just like Amalie and Ian in a past book. Both men even have their chest hair described with the same word; wispy.
Oh, and of course, they feel as if they've known each other for years and they even dream of each other because you know that they are connected from a past life.

If you can get past all of the similarities, the book is actually good.

One thing I like about Nina is the way she second guesses herself with everything. She feels out of place at church, sure the worshipers know she doesn't belong. She worries about the lunch she prepared for Wes, realizing that she doesn't even know if he has food allergies. These small tendencies are so relatable that it just makes the reader establish a bond with her. Great job.

The book ended abruptly and I know that there is a part 2, but I am unsure if I really feel like jumping into it. I feel like I already know the ending because of how similar it is to "Meet me in the Garden."

Fate, yeah we have heard of this thing that is an enigma that controls our lives. Something that we can;t touch or see but we feel it as it tries to manipulate us to doing what it wants of us. The feelings come to us in various ways, tingles, deja vu or dreams. In this book we have Nina a woman that has suffered at the hands of the person that should have protected her and not only failed to do so but continues to hurt her emotionally. She has dream of this man that she knows she loves and feels it through out her dream. A feeling that she would be with him if things didn't interfere.
Wes, a man that also has dreams of this woman that he feels he is connected to.
When they meet for the first time, they both feel it, that instant connection that draws them together. But is her her hero? Does she need saving? Or are they destined to be with each other as equals both needing what the other gives.

This book was that for me an explanation of what fate feels like when you get that tingly sensation that you have met that person before. Wes and Nina are ying and yang to each other and you can feel the connection as you read it. More than just a romance it is a story about strength, peace and unity.

There are novellas and serials...

And then there are short stories.

This would be a short story. I personally decided the difference in novellas and short stories had to do with characterization. I've learned in this reviewing journey that a well written novella will hit all the points I want to see, just in a smaller amount of words.

WHEN I DREAM OF YOU take place over a few weeks, and begins at present day, only to take the journey of reading by starting a few weeks back. Nina first meets Wes during a run, and they connect instantly. He's only in town for a few days, but they manage to talk and hang out often. Nina swears she's meet him before, and recognizes him from her dreams.

The thing is, he recognizes her from dreams too.

Nina battles negative thoughts -- and this is where I feel the author may have needed a larger word count; Nina comes across as a woman on the verge of a psychotic break. I kept expecting her to go mad, between her negative thoughts, her fears, and get talking to herself.

This story had potential, but didn't quite get there for me.

When I Dream of You is a powerful novella that delves deep into some heavy issues. Nina is a young woman struggling with the memory of a childhood assault. The memories are only made harsher by the abuse of her alcoholic mother. Then she meets a man who is literally the man of her dreams. She feels like she knows Wes from the second they meet at a race in Florida, and the attraction is mutual. But can Nina get over her fears of intimacy before she loses him forever?

While this is a short story, it's definitely not light reading. The topic of rape is handled with respect, but it's a very emotional story. Instead of being graphic with the physical details, we experience the traumatic after effects along with Nina in a way that literally tears at your heart strings. We see the struggle to heal and to move on, even years later--something I'm sure many women will be able to relate to. This story is a sweet and touching romance, but also a story of survival and of overcoming fears. If you're looking for a powerful and touching novella, pick up a copy of When I Dream of You today. You won't be disappointed.

Struggling to cope with her past, Nina Archer, moves through life keeping those around her at a distance. Men in particular cause her discern, but when a chance encounter leads her to meet writer, Wes Ladner, she feels like she's known him forever.

This is a story that tackles the difficult subjects of rape, incest and alcoholism in a short amount of time. The author writes beautifully and has a way of drawing you in fully, despite it's length of eighty-eighty pages. More of a friendship that turns slightly romantic, you feel and sympathize with Nina as Wes helps her come to terms with her past.

I really wanted more of this book. I wanted to see Nina and Wes's relationship develop and to know where they go. It's not a story that all issues are wrapped up tightly in the end. We're left a bit hanging as to whether Nina decides to move to North Carolina or stays in Florida with Wes. I do hope the series continues on with their story and a full conclusion is made.

Not a book that all will find appealing, it's saddening on many levels, but also powerful and heart wrenching.

Posted on What I'm Reading

I got a chance to read When I Dream of You by Rosa Sophia. First off, it's a quick read that covers some heavy issues. It isn't going to be for everyone. Honestly it's not a bad read. Nina has been trying to cope with what happen when she was younger and she never fully recover. Basically, the story is about her finding someone, Wes, and deciding if she's able to move forward. Majority of the story is actually written as her remembering things as they lead up the current situation. It caused a little confusion. By the end of When I Dream of You started to make sense.

I know that is an extremely vague review, but trauma that happen to her was pretty detrimental and is compounded by her mother's alcoholism. You do see Wes trying to help Nina to try to move forward, which is very sweet of him. Overall, not a bad story. It probably more me than the story.

This was a quick read of course being a novella.
We meet Nina who lives with her mother and realizes that she needs to move. Her mother is a drunk and has 2 sides to her. I mean every drunk does. But her mother takes the cake.
Nina meets Wes and it was like they met before but this was the first time they actually met. I believe fate stepped in for Nina. She was where she was supposed to be at the right time. The story flow was nice, aside from repeating things about her mother that is, and her insecurities about being with men. Once Nina opened up her heart she instantly knew what she was meant to do.
Wes is Nina's once in a lifetime. They get a long well. For just meeting they acted like they knew each other for years. Wes was there when he could be for Nina. Like all strong woman we don't like to ask men for help. It was a great read. I liked it. I could of used a little more at the end. Maybe like where they are now. Where they live, if they get married. Things like that, small things.

I hate writing negative reviews. I just didn’t like the book. I didn’t feel connected to the character or Wes. I couldn’t see them in my mind while I was reading. I don’t even think there was a description of them. It was as if someone was writing in monotone. It was dull and lifeless.

I didn’t understand her immediate connection and love to Wes. Why would she have it if she feels panicked around people especially men.

I did however remember my face scrunching up in disgust at the things that happened to both Nina and her mother. No one should have to go through that. But I really didn’t find her resolve at the end where she did. Nina talks about her therapist a few times and mentions that she hadn’t seen him in a while and he did something bad. Then later Nina discloses what that bad was. I didn’t get even mentioning that because it didn’t seem to have any relevance to the story other than to bring in something else depressing.

Talk about a bag of mixed feelings on this one...its like 2.5-3 not really sure.

I was bit a torn by this read. I liked the premise of the book, a girl named Nina who is trying to start a new life away from her alcoholic mother. She keeps having these dreams of being assaulted and yelling for her mother for help yet she doesn’t come to help. We find out she was raped but she hasn’t really dealt with that in her life. She hasn’t really had much interaction with guys since then until she meets a new mystery guys who wants her for her and is willing to really be there for. While the book isn’t bad it just wasn’t what I thought it would be. I must admit I judged a book by its cover big time on this one. I thought I was going to get a fun beachy read but I got a novella focusing in some heavy subjects.

I couldn't make heads or tails of this book. It really needs a trigger warning. The main character, Nina, has had a hell of a life. The book opens up on Nina's memories of her rape. She has an alcoholic, abusive mother who blames her for the rape.

Some chapters are from years ago, some are in the present. There's also dreams that Nina has. The book was written as a jumbled mess. Some of the chapters talk about "him", but it's not clear who Nina is referring to until halfway through the chapter. Could "him" be her rapist? Wes? Her grandfather? Her therapist?
Also, it's mentioned in a throwaway comment that Nina's therapist raped a girl her age, but then it's not mentioned again.

I wouldn't recommend this book, nor would I continue to read the rest of the series.

When i read this book i wasn not expecting the depth of emotion that it held within it's pages. Topic very deep and may bring intense emotion to the reader, which it indeed do for me.
I wish it was longer and that i got to know more of the story after Fate had it's word for Wes and Nina. The Moral of the story was very clear cut and it gives me hope that even though something traumatic happens in your life, there is a silver lining within the darkness, you just have to allow it to come through and shine!!!
Very well written and am looking foreard to reading more from Rosa Sophia.....

When I Dream of You pulled me in quick and moved me powerfully. I could really feel what Nina was feeling, and what she felt when she first ran into Wes.
This story reaffirmed my thoughts on fate, and what will be will be. You'll see how strong Nina truly is, and also how caring and perfect Wes is for her.
A quick read, but worth every minute. I am looking forward to reading more work by Rosa Sophia.

When I Dream Of You is a very cute love story. It is sad and romantic at the same time. It is a quick read so there isn't many details about the characters to really get to know them well. I would have liked to know more about Nina's and Wes past together but I still enjoyed the story. I give this book 3.5 stars but since that's not an option on Goodreads I put four stars since in my opinion it's a little closer to 4 stars than 3. It's good enough to make me want to read more.

I received a free kindle book to review.

When I Dream of You by Rosa Sophia will definitely stir some emotions. This book does deal with certain situations and triggers so please be aware of that before reading. Rosa Sophia is a new author to me but because this book was so well written and emotionally packed, I will be on look out for more books by her. I never once felt that I was reading a book, but instead watching the story play out, as though I was right there, up close.
