Thank you to Clarkson Potter / Ten Speed Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Forever Stamps explores the idea that postage stamps are more than just functional objects, they’re a part of America’s cultural identity and a record of history. The book encourages readers to think of stamps as messengers, reminding us of the personal and meaningful connections created through sending mail.

Rather than acting solely as a visual catalog, this book provides fascinating facts and context about stamps and how they’re chosen. One detail I found especially interesting was learning that presidential stamps are only issued after a president’s passing, typically around the first anniversary of their death or near their birthday, and must be approved by both the family and the Postmaster General. These kinds of insights highlight how much care, symbolism, and history go into stamp design.

The book emphasizes that stamps are not just aesthetic collectibles, they preserve moments, honor people, and reflect cultural values over time.

Overall, Forever Stamps is an informative and visually appealing read that would make an excellent coffee table book. It’s perfect for history lovers, design enthusiasts, or anyone curious about how something as small as a stamp can carry so much meaning.

Forever Stamps is the perfect gift for stamp collectors or someone who is looking to own a little piece of history. It is filled with different stamps that have been distributed throughout the last quarter of a century, giving facts and history on the print runs of some of them. The reader is given a glimpse at stamps they may have never know existed, as well as reminders of some of the most beautiful stamps to have ever graced an envelope.

This being said, it is a niche book. It is for a reader who wants to know more about the history of some of the country's stamps, so it's far more than a picture book. There are plenty of stamps to see, though it did feel like some of them might have been missing too. Although, I imagine it would be near impossible to find pictures of every stamp the United States has ever issued, so I cannot fault the author for any omissions that may have taken place. It was still interesting, and it mildly made me want to start collecting stamps to have a little bit of everything in the future to look back on.

Thank you NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Fun collectible book of American history in stamps. Organized into thematic sections - focused on the visuals depicted on the stamps. Brief explanations of the stamp’s history (creation of the stamps, uses, etc) are woven into larger story of visuals depicted.

Often these books are more chronological or focused on the stamp creation, so this feels unique in this type of book and more accessible to those interested in the aesthetics and topics vs. technical details of stamps. Each section includes a sidebar with intro to collection tips and info for beginners and useful vocabulary list in the back.

If you are looking for a history of stamps and mail, look elsewhere (no flying jenny’s here). If you are looking for a whirlwind of Americana in the form of stamps, this is the book for you! Would also make a great gift for the collector / history buff / stamp fan / patriot in your life.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced e-book version. This is my honest review.

This is awesome if you like philately, philatelic history, American history and culture in general, or if you just enjoy looking at pictures. I’m biased because I am in fact in the target audience for this book, but I think this is a fun exploration into how American culture is captured in these small pieces of paper, and what parts of American history are deemed important to be represented on an object of national identity. It has a decent range, both modern and vintage, and I did spy several stamps that were in my own collection (which feels a little like running into a fond friend out in public). Definitely the type of book one would want a physical copy of to flip through and just browse idly, rather than one you would binge (given the pace it took me to finish it), and one that I can see having a fond place on a philatelist’s shelf.

Thank you to Clarkson Press and NetGalley for the ARC.

ARC review.

An informative read for any philatelist. The book is packed with fascinating American history, making it much more than just a catalog. I loved that the stamps are arranged topically and thematically, which makes browsing feel incredibly intuitive.

Each section features high-quality images paired with insightful captions. By explaining the historical context before diving into the purpose behind each issue, the book provides great depth. It was a nostalgic trip to see stamps I’ve personally used, and it gave me a newfound appreciation for the artistry and graphic design involved. A must-read + browse for collectors and history buffs alike.

A fascinating look at US stamps throughout the history of our nation, organized into categories to see the progression of artwork and ideas over time. Loved the historical tidbits, the inside look at how stamp designs are selected, and the information on collecting. I do wish there were more pictures of a wider variety of stamps.
