Oh Brother #2

Ours to Lose

Rate this book
One secret hookup arrangement.
Two career-launching competitions.
So much more to lose.

After getting promoted from sous chef to head caterer, Aubrey Witter must pull off the ultimate New Year’s launch…solo. Hundreds of dishes to plate means no time to think about who she is or—let’s be real—isn’t kissing at midnight. Until her best friend’s boxing god of an older brother shows up, looking even more gorgeous than he did when they were kids.

Gabe Hardt has been avoiding home since his mom’s death two years ago. But with how Aubrey's been there for him in the aftermath, he’d do anything to surprise her at her big event. And when he learns she’s never had a New Year’s kiss? He can’t climb into the ring fast enough.

What Gabe doesn’t expect is for the kiss to be so explosive. Or for Aubrey to ask for a taste of more. Or to start wanting a future not meant for him the longer she stays in his arms.

It should be a win-win. As long as 1) Gabe's brother never finds out, and 2) they remember it can’t last.

Ours to Lose is the second book in the Oh Brother series and can be read as a complete standalone. It’s a high-heat, low-angst contemporary romance featuring a swoon-worthy boxer who aims to please, an awkward chef who learns to ask for what she wants, and enough found family to make your heart melt. HEA guaranteed.

Holy emotion

This is a romance packed with grieving, friends to lovers and almost like a passing ships type of reunion, some found family, and two brothers repairing their relationship.

I was excited to see a Philly romance novel with identifiable neighbors/streets but was in for so much more.

Gabe & Aubrey’s story is a rollercoaster. Gabe is still trying to handle the death of his mother and Aubrey is working as head chef at new catering business. Gabe & Aubrey grew up together alongside Gabe’s brother and Aubrey’s best friend Evan.

I just want to say - I can really appreciate this wasn’t a love triangle as it would be so easy to create. I loved how genuine all the characters were in this book. Though Gabe & Aubrey were lying to themselves about their feelings the whole time 🤪

Ours to Lose is book two in the Oh, Brother series and features Gabe and Aubrey. Gabe is a boxer who tried to escape his past demons by staying away from his family and Aubrey is a chef who best friend is Gabe’s brother. Aubrey had a crush on Gabe growing up and when he returns home their chemistry is instant. This brother’s best friend, with lessons romance had the right amount of spice with two characters who are perfect for each other. I adored the returning characters from Don’t Remind Me. I truly loved this one and the first book in the series as well. I received a complementary copy from Booksirens.

Thank you to Lacey Burke for the opportunity to read this book and meet her characters in advance and in exchange for my honest opinion

My rating:4.5 ⭐
What you can expect:
- Friends to lovers
- Best friend's older brother
- Childhood crush
- Sports romance
- Sex coach
- Conversations about grief and loss of a relative
- "Just friends with benefits"
- Lots of yummy food
- Asking for help doesn't make you weak
- Open doors spice (LOTS OF IT)
- "Greedy girl"

My thoughts:
This was so much fun. I honestly had the best time with this book and I'm glad I took my time to savor it. The tension and chemistry between the characters made me giggle and blush on more than one occasion, and oh those spicy scenes were everything!

Can't stress enough how well Lacey explored the nuances of female pleasure in such detailed and romantic manner while also including heavier themes like grief, the anger that comes with the loss of a parent, and how the emotional trauma of being left behind and treated like a burden can shape all your future relationships, romantic or not.

Lacey's writing style is clear, fresh and you can tell she really loves what she does. The metaphors using cooking and boxing vocabulary to describe feelings and actions were really nicely executed and I do appreciate a job well done.

Can definitely recommend this book and I will absolutely read more of her books!

Aubrey has everything you could want on the surface. She's finally taken the plunge and is now taking control of her work. Starting her own catering business was supposed to complete her. But now it's New Years Eve, and although the party is in full swing, she's on her own again. Everybody else is paired up in happy couples or married. Now, for the first time, she realises she needs more. Gabe has stayed away since his mom's death. His boxing has become his life. But it's come at a cost. The closeness he had with his brother has totally gone. Now, he intends to try to rebuild the relationship with his dad and his brother. But first, he wants to surprise the one person who keeps him going with text messages that kept him going when he needed grounding. Surprising Aubrey with her first New Years kiss is the least he can do. After all, she's given him. What he doesn't expect is the effect it has on him. He was her childhood crush. She is his brothers best friend. Can he mend his relationships. This is an easy to read book and my first time reading this author

Ours to Lose is the second book in the Oh Brother series (book one is Don’t Remind Me) and it’s a spicy best friend’s brother romance that I had so much fun reading. Gabe is back in town after years away, and his brother’s best friend has never looked more tempting. 😉 Aubrey asks him to be her sex coach/friends with benefits while he’s around, and from there… things definitely heat up.

I ate this book up—it was the perfect length, the chemistry was so fun, and the ending left me smiling. I can’t wait to see what else this series brings!

It's finally here, and I couldn't love it more! I adore Lacey's writing, if she writes it, I'm reading it. This is the second book in the series, and it's every bit as incredible as the first.
Aubrey is best friends with Gabe's younger brother, which has always kept her connected and a part of his family.
Gabe, a dedicated boxer and has put his career above everything and everyone else. Since losing his mom, he's avoided coming home, distancing himself from his brother and his dad.

Aubrey is the hardest worker in any room. As head of the catering division at her restaurant, she pours herself into her job. With no family of her own, her small circle of friends has become the family she chooses.

This story handles some heavy emotional themes with such grace and depth. I found myself in tears more than once, completely invested in Aubrey and Gabe's journey. Watching them find love while navigating grief was both heartbreaking and beautiful.

This is full of heart, depth and delicious spice. Thank you Lacey for the arc.

"I'd never felt more at home in my body or at ease in my mind. Never dreamed it'd be possible to feel both those things in the presence of another person."

"Being around her was like basking in the sun. Being with her...it was like being lit by the sun from within."

I just wanted to take these two characters and hug them and tell them everything would be ok!

You should read this if you like:
Best Friend's Brother
Childhood Crush
Boxer x Chef
Spicy Lessons
Friends with Benefits
Grief/Healing journey

This is book 2 in the Oh Brother series and it follows Gabe and Aubrey. Aubrey is a chef and was just given a head chef job with a catering company, she seemingly has everything going for her but Aubrey feels like something is missing, and she can't really put her finger on it. Gabe is a boxer who is returning home after abandoning his family after the death of his mother 2 years ago.

Gabe and Aubrey had a texting relationship over the 2 years Gabe was gone, so when he comes home they start spending time together in person. The comfort Aubrey has with Gabe, leads her to ask him to be her "spice" coach. They agree to a friends with benefits arrangement with the stipulation that they will end it when one of them catches feelings and whenever it ends, they will keep their friendship. What they did not realize was they were both already deep in feelings for each other!

This book was able to deal with some more difficult topics, like Gabe's continued grief over his mom and Aubrey's feelings of abandonment, with a sweet friendship to romance between the two and the spice of their "lessons". One minute I was smiling and kicking my feet and the next I had tears in my eyes. I love books that can make you feel all of the things. Aubrey really became the safe space for Gabe and she was the bridge between him and his family. With her best friends being Gabe's younger brother, she was able to help the brother's navigate their anger and make peace. And Gabe helped Aubrey realize she could ask for help when she needed it, that the people who loved and cared for her would be there for her when she needed them.

I really liked how the author started the book with their texting relationship first, it really laid the foundation for their friendship, it added so much to their chemistry when they were together and made the jump from friends to lovers so seamless and believable.

If you love a best friend's brother romance, I highly recommend this one! It perfectly balances the romance with more difficult topics. I was rooting for these two from the very first page!

I went into this book not sure what to expect, but I found my attention captured by the end of the very first chapter. The writing was easy to follow and the characters were likeable right away.

Aubrey, our FMC, is a chef who had a crush on her best friend's brother growing up. Now she's a supportive friend, an on-the-rise chef, and a girl trying to figure out what she likes. 😉 I really enjoyed seeing Aubrey begin to ask for help and allow people to support her, just like she supports them. Gabe, our MMC, has been running from his demons and finding comfort in texts with his brother's best friend...but now he's back to face everything, including being in the same town with the girl. 🥊 Gabe is such a sweet, sweet boy, and my heart ached for him multiple times. I loved the growth he goes through. The chemistry with these two was jumping off the pages. The progression of their relationship felt natural and I am so here for them!!

The topic of grief was a dominant theme in this book (check your trigger warnings!) but it was handled so beautifully!! I love how author Lacey didn't shy away from what could be very heavy, but instead weaved it into a beautiful story.

The side characters had so much to add to this story. I liked the different journeys our characters were on as well. I enjoyed following Aubrey through the kitchen and finding out about each interview she did. I ate this book up! I found it to be the perfect length, every character pulled me in, and the story felt so realistic.

Looking for a found family? Big fan of the best friend's brother trope? Pick this one up!! This book can definitely be read as a standalone, but it is the 2nd in the Oh Brother series. Thank you so much to Lacey Burke for the opportunity to read this ARC!! All feedback is my own 🫶🏼

💬 This was a pretty good book, although something about the ending seemed to drag a little bit for me.

I think this one might be a little bit more in the chick lit category because the characters are definitely dealing with a lot more than just the relationship. There's very strong themes of grief and healing and finding yourself in this story, all of which are very well done that I enjoyed. The MCs are two broken people who unexpectedly find healing in each other's arms, but I don't know. I think maybe I was more in the mood for just a straightforward romance.

I also personally couldn't really connect with Aubrey as a character. Not because of the quality of writing but just we are very different people and I couldn't quite relate to it.

Like I mentioned, I think this book is really well written- I did get pulled in and was invested in Aubrey and Gabe's relationship. Plus, I think that most people would enjoy it, just, this is probably just a case of "it's not you, it's me". A lot of the pieces were there but it didn't totally land

I don't usually feel this way but I do wish there had been some sort of summary of the previous book, like I even had to go back and look up my previous review for that one to even remember who the characters were.

This book has so many things I love:
🌟 set in Philly
🌟 best friend’s older brother/childhood crush
🌟 found family
🌟 knowing each other’s past hurts
🌟 FMC is a chef
🌟 both MCs in career transitions
🌟 sex coach 🔥🔥 “I can help you with that”
🌟 third act handled in a way that I like (no spoilers!)
🌟 did I say set in Philly?

Aubrey and Gabe are both fully developed characters, with pasts that have shaped who they are as individuals and to each other when the book begins. Their moving toward this moment is nicely woven through the book, and the surprise they both feel at how it’s even better than they hoped is so sweet and tender and thrilling.

Lots of secondary characters from book one in the series, and I can’t wait for book three! Which reminds me - I often think the middle book in a trilogy suffers from second-book syndrome - distracted with follow-up/fan service from book one, plus building the context for book three, and this book has NONE of that. It’s a beautiful and sexy love story set in a community that I want to be a part of.

Between books one and two there are two sets of four-letter-named brothers with strained/broken relationships and parental issues of different types, and I am finding it a bit confusing to keep all of that sorted, but not enough that it impacted by enjoyment of this book. The MMC in the next book is the other brother in this book’s pair, after which they’ll all four be happily paired, and I will be so happy to know that the whole group is loved up.💜💜

Thank you for the opportunity to be part of this reader team!
I did not read Oh Brother, book 1, and you definitely don't need to: Jase and Dani are just side characters in this story about a once-boxer (Gabe) and his brother's best friend Aubrey (a chef) who try a friends-with-benefits relationship to help her, frankly, "get some".
What I loved about this: I LOVE the glimpses into their professional sides: Gabe as he tries to find himself in a life outside of boxing and Aubrey as she tries to spread her chef wings and start a catering company. It's really well done and I frankly ADORE that the "yes chef" moment comes from a woman. There is also an undercurrent of trauma/grief throughout this, as Aubrey (whose parents were always vacant) and Gabe (who lost his mother suddenly) are forced to deal with their pain, shared and isolated, and their familial issues. Its all beautiful and serves as a great backdrop to understanding their friendship to lovers arc.
I do wish friends-to-lovers was the ONLY trope here. I don't think the friends with benefits part is needed? I almost wish they had just explored that natural progression of their emotions. It let us have them hooking up really quickly, which was really good, I just almost didn't need that backdoor way into a perfect romance.
But all in all, these two are lovely.

Ours To Lose is book 2 in the Oh Brother series and this brothers best friend/ friends to lovers book brings all the emotions. Aubrey seems to have everything she could want and going for her but underneath she feels something is missing. She's ready for that connection with someone. And Gabe has his own demons to face, having not fully dealt with the loss of his mother and the boxing career he loved.

Now back home in Philly Gabe is trying to mend fences with the family he abandoned with the help and support of Aubrey, who grew up as basically a third child in the Hardt household. Burke does a really good job of tackling the themes of grief and loss for both characters. I found them to be a good match for each other with great chemistry and excellent banter. The spice flowed naturally with the sex coach aspect and didn't feel cringy or forced. There was great growth for both our MC's keeping you invested in their story. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Aubrey and Evan, Gabe's brother. It's always so refreshing to see a wholesome platonic relationship between opposite sexes.

As well we get some great cameos from our favorite characters from book 1, Don't Remind Me. The book was well paced and a fast easy read. Great for fans of brother's best friend, childhood crush, andfriends with benefits.

Thank you to the author and book sirens for my advanced copy in return for an honest review

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Neither Gabe nor Aubrey are looking for a relationship but a secret fling may be beneficial to them both.

Ours to Lose is the second book in the Oh Brother series. This contemporary romance can be read as a stand-alone. It does contain open-door content. TW/CW: Death of a parent (prior to book) is discussed throughout and another parent has a health scare.

Whenever MCs have a “no strings attached” deal, it’s always fun to see who falls first. With this one, it’s kind of hard to tell since they do have history. As much as I loved seeing the progression from this-is-one-time-thing to this-is-a-forever-thing, the MCs personal growth really makes the story. Gabe has a lot of trauma and grief he’s dealing with and I like the realistic way in which the author discusses it throughout the book.

Overall, Ours to Lose is a well-balanced romance. It has just the right amount of sweet and spicy to counter some of the more difficult emotions at play. I’m interested to see if we get any more books in this series but I look forward to reading whatever the author has next for her readers.

Ours to Lose, Oh Brother Book 2 by Lacey Burke is a standalone book set in a world filled with family and friends. The story focuses on Aubrey, head chef of the catering side of the restaurant and Gabe, retired boxer and older brother of her male best friend. Gabe has returned to Philly with big dreams and a secret attraction to his younger, childhood next door neighbor, Aubrey. She has had a secret crush on Gabe since high school and after discovering he back, impulsively comes up with an irresistible offer.
Ours to Lose was a combination of deep emotions: stress, frustration, grief, guilt, and regret along with friendship, attraction, yearning, and unvoiced love. This is a story of people coming to terms with their greif, insecurities, unshakable love of family and the importance of honesty. Book 1, Don't Remind Me is now on the TBR list and I am looking forward to Evan's story when it is published.
I appreciated the authenticity in the writing - it was heart wrenching at times but so essential to the depth of the story.
I received an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review based solely on my reading experience.

This book brings you on a roller coaster of emotions! From the angst between family members during turmoil, heartbreak of lost loved ones, hope for the future, finding happiness and falling in love. Lacey nailed it with this one.
I’m a sucker for a best friend’s older brother romance and this was hot. From exploring sexual desires to hookups in the gym, this book was sprinkled with spicy moments.
I loved watching Aubrey grow in this book. From work to her relationship with Gabe, she really flourished. Her presence in the Hardt family from day one is so heartwarming. I love how invested she is in each family member’s well being. Seeing Gabe and Evan rekindle their brotherly love gave me all the feels. The hospital waiting room scene really hit me.

Tropes:
✨ Best friend’s older brother
✨ Friends with benefits
✨ Sports Romance
✨ Childhood crush
✨ Sex coach
✨ “Anything you want”

I blew through this book in 24 hours and I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time.

What you're going to get:

✔️ Best friend's brother
✔️ Kick-ass FMC Chef (who needs to learn she can ask for help)
✔️ Former boxer turned coach (who's back in the ring for one last fight )
✔️ Depictions of loss and grieving
✔️ Found Family
✔️ Friends to lovers
✔️ Friends with benefits
✔️ Hot, hot sex
✔️ HEA

I absolutely adored this book! I could not get enough of Gabe and Aubrey; their friendship, the care they had for each other... the absolutely *explosive* chemistry. All of it was just *chef's kiss* perfection.

While this book is emotionally heavy, the angst and pain come from learning to face your fears and heal from wounds of the past versus conflicts between the MCs and I am here👏for👏it👏.

You don't need to have read book one to dive right into this one but I highly recommend that you do so that you can experience that joy too.

Aubrey Witter always wished she had a New Year's kiss but never with her ex boyfriend and this year she works at the New Year's It party all alone as head caterer . Her luck just change as Gabe Hardt the big brother of her best friend and her teenage crush is there to give her the kiss . Gabe is a few years older and for him Aubrey was someone he always cared about . Until two years ago he was a professional boxer before an injury that made him stop competing and start coaching . With his mother death he stopped any connection with his father and bother and only with her he was able to be open with his pain . After the kiss they both can't pretend that they are just friends . So when she asks him for his help they decide to be friends with benefits and his brother to never find out about them . What will happen when the heart wins over the mind ?

Ours to Lose was such a great read, and learning that this is only Lacey’s second book?!! Floored. The writing is fantastic! The book follows Aubrey, a chef who is in the process of standing up a catering company, and her best friend’s older brother Gabe, a former boxer who returns to Philly in hopes of buying his old boxing gym. He hasn’t been home since his mom passed, but has kept up a quiet friendship with Aubrey. When Aubrey (who hasn’t had the best experience in her smex life) decides she wants to ✨experiment✨ … who do you think volunteers to help? 😏 The plot of this book had a lot of moving parts, but they fit together so well. Aubrey and Gabe both grew so much in their own ways throughout the book, and the way it all came together was beautiful. I cannot wait for more from Lacey!!! This was a great read!! 🥰

This is a fun, flirty, and feel-good romance that hooked me right away. A New Year’s kiss turns into a secret hookup between a hardworking, awkward chef and her best friend’s ridiculously charming boxer brother—and things only get hotter (and messier) from there.

Aubrey is easy to root for as she juggles career pressure and big feelings, and Gabe is pure swoon with a soft heart under all that muscle. Their chemistry is instant, intense, and surprisingly sweet. I loved the found family vibes and how low the angst stayed while the emotional stakes still felt real.

If you’re in the mood for a quick, steamy read with lovable characters, secret romance tension, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Ours to Lose is the second book in the Oh Brother Series, sharing Aubrey and Gabe’s story. Aubrey is a chef and Gabe is a boxing coach. After nearly two years away, Gabe has returned home to Philly and is working to rebuild his relationships.

Gabe and Aubrey’s chemistry was natural and built well over the course of the story. This book is about second chances, hope, and healing, and these themes are well paced in the novel.

Readers who enjoy friends with benefits to lovers, dating coach, found family, second chances, and “it’s always been you” stories will enjoy this book.

There are open door scenes and discussions of grief are also in this book.

💙Ours to Lose releasing October 14th💙

I really enjoyed this book! The friendship that Gabe and Aubrey form over text while he’s traveling as a boxer laid such a solid foundation for their friends with benefits relationship when he comes back to town. Both main characters had a lot of emotional depth and struggles that impact how they view what they can offer the other. I absolutely loved seeing them work through those hard feelings. It’s so clear how deeply each cared for the other!

-Best friend’s brother
-Friends to lovers
-friends with benefits // sex coach
-He’s a boxer, she’s a chef

Thank you to Lacey Burke for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC!

tysm to lacey burke for letting me arc read this book!! This is book two in the Oh Brother series but they can be definitely be read as standalones because I haven’t read book one but there weren’t any plot points I felt like I was missing information on. I really loved the dynamic between the characters and this book was able to tackle really heavy topics like grief & abandonment without feeling too sad and really covered them well. The only issue I had with this book was that sometimes the sentences would be really long/run on which yk I’m a yapper too but fixing that could really improve the flow of the book.

Ours to Lose is a sweet, low-angst best friend’s brother romance that blends heartfelt emotion with swoony chemistry. Aubrey’s drive to prove herself as a chef collides perfectly with Gabe’s struggle to open up again after loss, creating a story that’s both tender and passionate. Burke balances family dynamics, career pressure, and romance in a way that feels genuine and engaging. A warm, feel-good read for fans of familiar tropes done with heart.

I love how genuine the FMC feels, how she opens herself up to every possibility, even when it hurts. I wasn’t happy with how selfish the MMC could be at times, even though he had his reasons. Still, I really appreciated how they navigated their struggles together to create such a beautiful ending. Healing isn’t always linear, and sometimes you have to be open with yourself to truly find your way home. Grateful for the ARC opportunity.

This book was filled with the perfect amount of angst, raw emotions and real life traits. I was absolutely captured by the book from the beginning and had a hard time putting it down. Without even reading the first book (I didn’t know about that until the ending of this book), I had no trouble following along the storyline. 10/10 would recommend

This was the 2nd book in the Oh Brother Series & my favorite so far! The characters in both books make appearances, being in the same social group, but these could definitely be stand alone books. I loved that we got to see Jase & Dani reappear a bit in book two to touch base with them💛

I loved Gabe & Aubrey’s genuine characters in this romance!
THE NATURAL BUILD UP & CHEMISTRY..oofta🔥🥵

(Trying to put this into words because I just loved this whole aspect of the book so much & I think it’s so important for women to feel.)- I loved this unique take on Aubrey having full control & having a hold of all the reigns in being able to explore her sexuality, express what she wanted, & figuring out what she liked with absolutely 0 judgement. Gabe made my heart flutter & watching Aubrey’s confidence level rise throughout the book was *chef’s kiss*💋. (No pun intended)😏

This book was spicy🌶️, such a beautiful feel good easy read, I could feel all the emotions & the topic of grief was handled & written so beautifully.

Can’t wait to read what she writes next!✨
