Dreams Beneath the Veil

Rate this book
Ravenna dreams of death. Corbin delivers it.

Ravenna’s gift as an oracle has never been reliable, yet when a dead prince appears in her visions, she may be the only one who can unravel the mystery around his death. But there’s another figure that haunts her dreams–one that fills her with both longing and dread. When she’s invited to the capital, she’s determined to uncover the truth about this mysterious stranger as well as the crown prince.

Tasked with escorting her, Corbin's loyalty is divided between his country and his gods. He walks the knife's edge between duty and treason. Solving the crown prince’s murder should be his priority, but he has his own secrets to keep–and his fascination with Ravenna threatens to uncover them all.

As attraction between them grows, so does the danger around them. The road is long and lined with horrors–things that creep and crawl through the mists of the Veil. And in the distant capital, a demon awaits.

Monsters lurk in the dark. The fae are growing restless. And some dreams are better not to come true.

Cursed Isle is a fantasy horror romance trilogy with dark themes and mature content, including sexually explicit scenes, dubious consent, BDSM, voyeurism, mild gore and character deaths.

Featuring a dark, moody setting and gothic-style prose, Dreams Beneath the Veil is perfect for fans of One Dark Window, Anathema, or Of Visions & Secrets.

interesting start!

I received an ARC copy. The world building in this book was really interesting and immersed you instantly. We first meet each main character in different scenes. It remind me of the show Witcher where you see different parts of the story before the story comes together. It lets you learn about them and some of the things that are important. I loved the use of the “magic” of you can call it that and the demon’s obsession with the FMC. It left me with a lot of questions like why are they allowing the demons to do some of the things? Why is demon so obsessed? Will this be a love triangle? Who is the villain? Only complaint I have is how naive the FMC is but I really feel we will get a better explanation in the next book. There’s so many moving parts that i honestly can’t wait till the next book to see where it leads. I really recommend this to those who like the Witcher!

Thank you to the publisher for my ARC copy.
3.5/5 stars!
The story was engaging from the start and I enjoyed the multiple POVS. The world building was immersive and I liked the FMC’s character. This book gives me One Dark Window vibes, (but spicier) and the magic system is interesting!
I did feel as if the romance was a bit rushed and insta-love, but it had me wanting more nonetheless.
I’m excited to see where the next book goes and how the story/relationships will develop.

This book was received for free as an ARC from the publisher in exchange for my review. However, all thoughts are my own.

3.5/5 stars, but rounding up to 4 because Goodreads doesn't allow for partial stars and the story was a fun, entertaining read.

My initial impression was that the book was fairly atmospheric. I could sense the fog choking out an abandoned landscape and the mystery and unease that accompanied it.

The worldbuilding was interesting and the plot engaging. I found myself always wanting to know more about the world, its beasts, and the powers at play.

Frankly, the weakest part of this story was the romance; it felt rushed and underdeveloped. I wish we could've spent more time in the characters' heads as they moved from apprehension to infatuation towards each other.

The narrator isn't totally omniscient and the lore of this land is drip-fed to us as the characters interact with the world. I do wonder if we were kept out of certain characters' heads to preserve this mystery; however, this backfired a little, likely being the reason the romance felt rushed and underdeveloped.

Regardless of my critiques, I always looked forward to and enjoyed my time reading this book. And, for me, enjoying myself is a key part of reading. I look forward to following this series as the other books release.

(I'll try to return and add more detail once I figure out how to add spoiler text.)

I had the pleasure of reading the ARC of Beneath the Veil by Sienna Hawthorne. This fantasy romance follows Ravenna, an oracle who dreams of the deaths of people in her village. Believing herself weak and unworthy of her gift, Ravenna’s life changes when she foresees the death of Prince Hadrian, heir to the Royal Family. Summoned to royal court in Tormhain, she embarks on a journey alongside the formidable Sir Corbin and his men.

The story unfolds into an adventure of self-discovery as Ravenna learns the true extent of her powers, while navigating her complex connection to Nyxroth – a mischievous, powerful demon who possesses the soul of the healer, Elias and invades Ravenna's dreams.
These dynamics characters eventually converge, and their intertwined relationships form the heart of the series.

Hawthorne writing style is simple and accessible, though a few typos slipped through. Still, the story has clear potential. I am already eager to dive into the next book of the series- I need to know what happens next!!!

This was a great book to start off a series. Was similar vibe to ACOTAR, and was well paced and easy to follow along with. Well worth a read for anyone that likes romantasy!
