I’m Sarah, a romantasy author who spends way too much time among crystals, plants, and various forms of wildlife.
I was born and raised in a hippie surfer town in California before running away to New Orleans to read literature with the local vampires.
After a hurricane and a degree, I found myself wandering around Los Angeles, dreaming of becoming a novelist in a script writer world.
The heat was a tad too much, so I moved across the pond to pursue an MA in English Language and Linguistics in London, focusing on practical applications of linguistic theories on fiction.
Now I’m writing from my lake-adjacent cottage in the Netherlands, with my husband and two children cheering me on.
ARC reader. It’s a well paced book with romance, mystery and action elements. Dual povs, with two sisters. Which was very hard to follow for me( seems like they have two different stories) but after a while it was easier.
Older fmc, who has the weight of the world in her shoulders. I enjoyed her growth journey- finding her confidence. Also I want her to design more dresses. Astrid…. I just want to hug her.
Good world building and full of twists.
We follow Maeve, who is in her sister’s dream, competing for the Dragon prince’s hand. She has many struggles, but quickly overcomes them. Astrid is torn between her friend and her sister. While having issues on her own.
I need more building with the love intrests, because I can’t clearly see the vision.
However the twists were everything. A moment of silence to the book cover, It’s a masterpiece.
Thank you Sarah for choosing me Definetly recommend. Can’t wait to find out more about this world.
I enjoyed the book. The dual POV was interesting way to follow the two sisters and I thoroughly emersed into both stories. The magic system of the runes was also something new in a fantasy book. The ending and the plot twists - unexpected!
However, I mostly felt the Bridgerton influence, rather than Viking story, and even though the FMC is older I agree with others that this is more YA book and you fo not feel that as much. Additionally it felt short on the relationship developments betwren the characters, I needed more to believe their connection. Also it was very hard for me personally to follow the story with Torens pronounces.
Other than that, I enjoyed the book and it has great potential!
I really enjoyed this book! In the beginning, I thought I knew how it was going to turn out. I admit I was a little bit miffed thinking I knew where it was going... but no. I didn't at all!
I love this type of fantasy first-person book, and I really enjoyed the writing style, too. The two POVs can become a little confusing, switching between, especially as I was reading quickly as I was so eager to find out what happened next!
There was a definite regency air that reminded me of Bridgerton. If you enjoyed that and books like ACOTAR and other fantasies, I think you'll enjoy this. It definitely had a YA feel to it.
Safe to say, I feel very pleased Sarah chose me to be an ARC reader and I can't wait for the next book!
I am a ARC reader. When i started reading, i coudnt stop! Its really easy to read, and you think you know whats gonna happen, but no, its going the other way! Verry good book, cant wait for the second book! Im so happy that Sarah sended me the book! Thankyou❤️
The first book in this new series introduces its own fantasy twist on British history and gives us drama, court politics and serious plot twists while it follows two sisters in the upper class of society, Mae and Astrid. A fast-paced story with plenty of world building and intrigue - ready for book #2 now!
I LOVED this book, I finished it in just two days. The characters are well written and interesting, you love some and you hate others ! The book was well paced and the twists unpredictable and well thought out. I found the world and magic system intruiging and well thought out. Definitely a series I'll be coming back to.
⭐ Without Spoilers: Wow. This book swept me away effortlessly—it was anything but ordinary or predictable. The characters were beautifully developed, and their emotions felt so raw and human that I could empathize with almost every one of them. The world-building was exciting and far from what I expected when I first stumbled upon it through TikTok videos, but I wasn’t disappointed for a single second. It’s thrilling, intense, and full of twists that keep your head spinning. You can sense there’s a deeper thread running behind the events, but you won’t be able to guess it until the very end. The suspense is masterfully maintained and… of course, it ends the way it does. I’ll admit, halfway through I started wondering—could this really be all? It felt like too little time to fully unravel the story. The language is light and accessible, even for someone whose first language isn’t English. Keep it up—I’ll be eagerly waiting for your next works, even if it means biting my nails down to the quick!
⚠️ With Spoilers: Finally, a book that doesn’t center around a teenage girl or young adult heroine. Sure, Astrid fits that mold and plays a central role, but you can really feel the contrast between the two main characters. I especially loved the parts where we got to experience situations from both perspectives—it was fascinating to see how differently they viewed each other compared to how they felt internally. That’s something so rare in books, it felt like pure joy. Astrid and Mae’s relationship worked better for me at the beginning. Later, it felt a bit rushed—how quickly the younger sister grew resentful and was reluctant to forgive. But from her perspective, it was completely understandable. I probably would’ve reacted the same way at her age, though I can’t fully immerse myself in those emotions anymore. Kael and Eirik were compelling characters too, and I’m curious to see how these relationships will evolve—how Mae’s feelings might shift between the two men, or whether Eirik’s view of his wife will change in the future. If I may point out one negative: English isn’t my native language, and it took me until about a third of the way through the book to understand Toren’s pronoun usage—why it was what it was. Later it clicked: ooooh. But even then, I was confused for a while about why I was reading about one person in plural form. In my native language, there’s no gender distinction, so this might not have been obvious at all.
I was lucky enough to be one of the arc readers for this fantastic book!. I loved every second but it definitely picked up from around chapter 15 or so. It’s a mix of Bridgerton and divergent that will take you right out of your reading slump and possibly send you back into it once you’re finished because you will need book 2 immediately 😂. Kael has my heart, I definitely need more of the romance! The sisterly bond is also really lovely to see and I enjoyed the magic system.
I cant wait to dive back into this series in the future and I highly recommend reading this gorgeous book and falling in love with this world like I have.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of A Gilded Game and I absolutely loved diving into this Viking inspired romantasy.
One of the standout elements for me was the dual POV between the two sisters. It added such richness to the story, we don’t just see one side of the intrigue and romance, but two perspectives that complement (and sometimes clash with) each other. Their relationship felt authentic, layered with loyalty, rivalry, and very real love.
The worldbuilding had a wonderful mix of opulence and danger dragon mythology woven into courtly politics and high-stakes choices. It gave me Bridgerton meets Vikings vibes with a magical twist.
The romance is equally compelling, full of tension, longing, and the kind of emotional push-and-pull that kept me hooked.
If I had one small note, it’s that at times I wanted a little more breathing room for certain moments between characters but the pacing kept me engaged and I’m eager to see how both sisters’ journeys unfold.
Another ARC review here!! This book is an easy-read fantasy version of Bridgeton and once I started to read I couldn’t put it down. If you’ve read the Twin Crowns triology I would recommend this book as it has a similar vibe.
It’s a well-paced book that has romance, action and mystery with both a damaged-soul moody love interest and a guarded but hopeful one. Though by the end of the book I do believe the moody one has become hopeful and the hopeful one will shortly be moody. Personally, I’m rooting for the fairytale ending for our beloved female main character Mae and perhaps for a new love interest to be introduced for her sister Astrid as a sub-plot to her growing academic career. The current romantic options for Astrid are limited and honestly the characters would have to have a serious redemption arc for me to root for them if they were to end up with her.
Everything in this book has a purpose and there was a couple of plot twists that the author had built up perfectly with little hints along the way. There are certainly still some questions I have that weren’t answered in this book but I’m positive they will be in the next one with how the storyline is going so far.
Overall, if you’re new to fantasy, like romantasy, or enjoyed any of the popular “TikTok books” in circulation I would highly recommend giving this one a try.
On that note, someone remind me when the next one comes out!!
ARC Review: Where do I start with this. It’s one of the first Viking type romantasy books I’ve ever read and it was honestly amazing. Although slow to start by a quarter of the way through I was hooked. What more could you ask for in a book? Betrayal ✅ sarcastic FMC ✅ plot twists ✅ fast paced ✅
I will say I really enjoyed the way the FMC came across, although she was supposed to be the one her family relied on she had another side to her that loved the pretty things in life and was a little naive but I really enjoyed this about her.
My only criticism would be that I wish there was a pronunciation guide because I know for sure I said a lot of names wrong 😂
Overall a great read and I can’t wait to see what happens next
Think Bridgerton meets vikings, with a refreshing age relatable character who doesn’t have everything magically go her way and is inexplicably brilliant at everything first time. Mae is a brilliant FMC and it is a lot easier to relate to her being the older sister who has to carry the family pressures than a lot of characters I’ve read lately.
The Eyes of Jorivik inserts were a favourite part of mine, and my mind was blown at them revealing a bigger plot!
I didn’t see the plot twist coming from Kael’s news on the wedding day (and apparently neither did Scales), but again it’s refreshing to read something where the dragons are the enemy, not friend.
I’m excited for the next book already, to see how Mae’s story pans out (and the love triangle??), as well as Astrid’s plans to help her sister.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It started at a great pace jumping straight in while explaining history and world building in a way that was interesting and made sense in the moment. It didn’t feel like the information was being given too quickly or just to explain stuff but was given as a natural part of the story.
I love the different take on the fantasy genre with the runes and vikings and hope this develops more in the next one. The romance was interesting and not too heavy although I did feel the relationship with the prince took a big jump and we could have seen more in his development of feeling. However this may come in the next book. It will be interesting to see where these relationships go from here.
I must say the twist was well planned and unexpected, as someone who normally guesses the ending half way through, I was surprised and will enjoy re-reading and seeing the hidden clues. It is clearly a well planned and thought out story and I’m excited to read more.
Long story short. If you like Bridgerton and fantasy this was a great read.
Thank you for letting me be part of this story so early on.
I was absolutely hooked from start to finish. As an avid romantasy reader, this had everything I needed from a book! A strong FMC, strong companionship, plot twists, grumpy romantic interests and great world building!
I was drawn to the older FMC with the weight of the world on her shoulders - her love and commitment to her family shines through. Her growth journey is incredible, and I love seeing a woman develop into her most confident self, because she is capable and knows it. I was pleasantly surprised by the dual-narrative element and loved the way this explored the sisterly bond, this added something quite unique to the romantasy genre. I love a strong educated female who knows what she wants and deserves!
A lover of grumpy MMCs? Then this is definitely the book for you! With multiple MMCs you’re sure to find one for you!
The suspense I felt throughout this book was incredible, I truly felt invested in everything happening and can’t stop thinking about the ending.
Definitely a 5* read. I will be recommending it to everyone I know when it is released! This series is going to be one to watch out for, I already can’t wait for book 2!

I was lucky enough to to receive an E-ARC for this! thank you Sarah for that!
I read this book with little to no expectations and there were so many elements I loved. Vikings. Small Norse mythology elements woven in and DRAGONS.
The story was overall really good, my reason for 4 stars was the 3rd point in the love triangle felt a bit rogue and then the FMC seemed to be a bit dismissive by the end.
I need to know what happens next because I'm probably rooting for the wrong guy 😂

I did enjoy the book, and I liked the different approach to the fantasy element with runes etc but with the regency air. I did, myself, struggle with the writing style. I’m not a big fan of 1st person present tense, so I couldn’t really get into it. What drew me in was the older FMC, but I found myself feeling like I was reading a more YA based book, which is fine if that what you like! Personally the style wasn’t for me.
Another thing I found myself not liking was the references to the old Norse Gods. There’s like in it I found myself really not enjoying. I know it’s to fit in with the world and setting the book is in, but some people who still practice the old ways may be taken aback by referring to Odin as the Great God of the Dragons, as I was. The same goes with the runes of they are based on the ones still used by practitioners.
I know why they’re included in the book, especially given the setting, but some people may not like it.
But don’t let that put you off the hook - the characters and world building were lovely, and I’m very lucky and honoured that Sarah chose me as an ARC reader!

I'll start with the minus points as my usual: ☔ The book reads like it's meant for a young audience, in my opinion. Particularly the characters and their interactions remained at a surface level, and though the main protagonist is supposedly 30, her inner thoughts and behaviour read to me as someone half her age. Not bad in itself, but I got the impression that this was to be a NA book, so I was left disappointed. ☔Not a fan of the ending, I found it unfinished. I understand the cliffhanger, but it read like any other chapter. I would have liked a bit more wrap-up.
More "neutral" points: 🩶Despite the high stakes, the book read cozy to me, except the very end. I didn't mind it, but if you expect epic trials and brutal court intrigues, you won't find them. 🩶 There's a love triangle, but since the characters weren't very defined, I wasn't too invested in one option or the other.
The positives: ⭐The world building was IMPRESSIVE. It was a crazy mashup of dragons, Pride and Prejudice, and Hunger Games. It sounds insane but it works! Some chapters gave the Jane Austen vibes, but with runes and Vikings in it. Worth a read only for that. ⭐ I enjoyed the final plot twist, when you realise things are different than they seem. It was well done!
A nice, quick book, but I would have liked more depth on the characters' side. Unfortunately they left me a bit indifferent 😔
A Gilded Game is reminiscent of The Selection series, mixed with Bridgerton, but with a dragon Prince.
This is a Regency-era Romantasy set in an alternate history where Vikings never left Northern England, and instead called forth the power of dragons to rule over them in exchange for rune magic. The trade off? The dragon Prince will choose a human mate from the Jarlton of suitors who will compete in challenges to win his favor.
What I loved about this book (other than the plot!) is that Mae is an over 30 FMC who spends her life protecting her family, trying to provide for them, and setting her sister up for her place as a suitor for the dragon Prince. Mae didn’t ask to be thrust into this glittering world of royalty. She’s rough around the edges, isn’t perfect, and hasn’t been “training for this her whole life” like so many other books. She has to step FAR outside her comfort zone, and train with temptation on a stick Kael.
There are several underlying stories unraveling throughout the book. Kael’s shadowed past, Astrid, Mae’s sister, and her rune Magic and mysterious illness that begins to threaten her existence. There’s a rebellion rising in the outskirts of the city where the thralls dwell. So many side characters and stories!
Overall, the writing is great, the storyline is great, and now I have to sit and wait for book two! Highly recommend!
The story starts brilliantly. It pulls you into the world right away without any info-dumping or confusion. Everything flows naturally, and I was impressed by how immersive it felt from the very first pages. I would’ve personally preferred a faster pace in the middle, but that’s just my taste.
The early momentum dipped for a while, but the story soon picked up again in a way that surprised me. Even though I expected certain events (like the Dragon Prince and the Ball), the way they unfolded kept me turning the pages.
I felt a bit sad for Astrid. She tried so hard and still didn’t get what she wanted. And when the story hinted that the sisters might turn against each other, it genuinely hurt. That emotional thread really stood out to me.
As for the romance, the book presents two potential love interests: the brooding, broken one and the duty-bound type. Both were compelling, but I actually found myself more invested in Astrid’s journey, whether in her runemaking, her personal growth, or her love life.
The ending caught me completely off guard in the best way. The last portion of the book was definitely the strongest and left me eager for the sequel.
I was left with a few lingering questions, but I’m confident they’ll be addressed in Book 2. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes next!
The way I absolutely devoured this book. I would’ve finished it in 24 hours if I didn’t have to work the next day. The setting is a fantasy regency and follows two female main characters stories. I loved Mae (not only because she has the same name as my very first cat), she was so incredibly funny and relatable. I loved her charming silly personality and as the oldest sister myself she touched my heart. And Astrid? She was so incredibly fun to read. Her passion for her studies felt so inspiring and she had a sweet and lovely aura to her that felt very warming. Already off to a great start. And the PLOT? Gosh I had no idea of any twist and turn that was going to happen. Truly had me gasping at every chapter. The author had an amazing ability to write everything so smoothly and vividly that I really felt like part of the world and was watching everything happen through the main characters eyes. I devoured the setting, I devoured the plot and I especially devoured the romance!!!
I really recommend this book a thousand times and I simply cannot wait for the next part. Truly a wonderful tale in the works.
If you’re looking for a recipe of a little bit of Bridgerton, a little bit of dragons, a pinch of Vikings, and an MFC who faces an epic battle with her own self-confidence, this book is for you!
I found it especially intriguing because the MFC is 30 and just trying to make a difference for her family—a refreshing perspective that was easy to connect with. Mae quickly became a character I adored.
The story is told from the perspectives of two sisters: Mae, who is simply trying to care for her family, and Astrid, who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. If you have a sister, you’ll connect with these two so much!
Don’t worry—there’s romance, and while it’s a strong element of the story, it isn’t the only focus. There’s plenty of self-growth, family bonds, and political intrigue woven throughout.
The one thing that tripped me up a little at first was the pronouns used for a side character, but once I adjusted, it was smooth sailing.
With rune magic, politics, and family at its core, this series feels like the beginning of something special—I can’t wait for more!
THIS BOOK!! From the very first page, it swept me into a world full of Bridgerton style charm with its own rune magical twist. Think Hunger Games meets the Bachelor all wrapped into one deliciously addictive book. The regency setting was beautifully crafted, the writing flowed effortlessly, and the character development was both rich and compelling.
What really stood out was how complete the story felt. Despite being the first in a series, it never once read like filler. The plot was packed with twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages, and I genuinely could not put it down. In a genre overflowing with dragons and magic, this book felt refreshingly original and completely unique. This is a book that makes you want to snuggle up with a cup of coffee (or tea) and not move until you’ve read from cover to cover. Do yourself a favor and jump on the Sarah Long, A Gilded Game bandwagon now, because this series is about to blow up. I’m eagerly awaiting book 2!
This is a pretty fast-paced multi-POV story that follows two sisters as they deal with their lives becoming very far out of the realm of their plans. Mae makes a lot of decisions to benefit her family, even when they aren't what's best for her. Astrid wants to be more than her beauty and to play a significant role in society, but that perfectionism weighs on her. It is very clear that despite any mistakes made or secrets kept between these sisters, they love each other greatly.
This is definitely one of my preferred versions of the "trials to marry a royal" trope. No one is out here dying or even doing anything terribly outlandish - they're showing reasonable physical and mental skills that both a prince and his subjects would want a new princess to have. Big shoutout to our FMC not being a teenager who is competing to get married.
I really liked the creative ways the author managed to sneak in world building. There is a page at the beginning of the book with the historical basics for this world, and the way things work in their modern society unfolds naturally through the sisters' experiences. Early into the book you learn a lot about the magic system just by following along as one of the sisters takes a test. You even manage to learn a bit about the world through the Lady Whistledown-style gossip columns.
There are a whole lot of loose ends and big twists coming out of the end of this book so I'm very much looking forward to the next one! Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read an ARC of A Gilded Game and share my thoughts!
WOW, what a rollercoaster... So happy to be sent this book! Since I started this book I couldn't put it down. We have two sisters, th older one that sacrificed everything so that her family can live more comfortably, and the youngest in wich rest the expectations of a better future for the family. There was this felling of nothing is as it seems in every turn... And there it was , when you think you finally get where the story is going, the author just says "Nop... You're wrong" There is duty and family expectations, and main characters trying to find their place in a society were strength and wealth is everything. And now I have so many questions... Can't wait to find out what happens next!
I received an ARC of this book which I absolutely devoured in 24 hours!
Mae’s devotion and dedication to Astrid was quite admirable. The lengths Mae went to, to provide Astrid everything she needed in her arsenal to secure her place as the Dragon Prince’s bride was intriguing to read about.
I really loved the dual POV’s between Mae and Astrid. I think there’s so much more to Astrid we have yet to see.
I loved the dynamic between Mae and Kael. I just can’t make up my mind about him. I feel there’s a lot more to his story we are yet to see.
“It was them or you. I’ve realised, as much as I hate it, I’d choose your life over anyone else.”
As for the Dragon Prince, I’m a bit undecided about him. Can’t wait to read the next book and see where the story goes next!
What in the world have I just read? This book hooked me up since the beginning! A mix between bridgerton meets hunger games vibes on the viking world. The world building keeps adding up trough the book and the plot just keep givin! Full of twist and action! The two sisters pov..Mae and Astrid, two strong females, certo different from each other! The writing is good, with a good set of vocabulary ( not cringe at all), spot on for the era that this whole plot is happening.
thank you Sarah for this oportunity!! Really looking forward for the next books!
OMG when the tiktok said it was like Bridgerton and Hunger Games had a baby, it was not wrong at all. I could not put it down and although I have read it, I will definitely be buying a copy as soon as it's realesed. I also need more books from this series as soon as possible!! What happens next?? Who writes the gossip? How do they know about everything? I have my theories but I would love to know more. Definitely a 10 out of 10 book for anyone who likes period romance and fantasy and is just wishing for the best of both to be combined.
I really loved this book! The plot was a great blend of a regency feel entwined with fantasy and dragons. The older FMC was what drew me to it initially, but her younger sister’s story also kept me hooked. I liked the dual POV of the FMC and her sister, and how their stories followed separate but connected lines. The world building was well done and the plot twists were great and kept me guessing! I’m excited to read more of Sarah’s books 😊
What can I say! This book has left me needing to know what happens next! I thought I knew where things were going and I thought it was going to have a typical ending but I was wrong!
The mix of Vikings/Bridgerton/Hunger Games had me hooked and enthralled as I read! The writing itself was put together so well, the detail and the world building was pleasant, I found this such an easy enjoyable read!
My only complaint was I wish the ending was more drawn out I felt like things happened so quickly that it’s left me desperate for more!
