Spend summer by the river with Heidi Swain in her comforting new novel.
Fernside is a truly magical a beautiful Georgian house, with a stretch of river and a lovely woodland, Willowell Woods, nestled to the back. It has always been owned by the Clarke family but now the woods are up for sale and not everyone is happy about it.
Constance is in her mid-eighties and has lived at Fernside all her life. She’s feeling rather low about the thought of one day leaving the only home she knows. Her grandson, James, used tolove the place, but ever since his mum died when he was eighteen, he’s struggled to feel happy there.
Newcomer Tilly has had a tough time of it recently. The death of her father and her disillusionment over her job in HR mean she’s now ready to make changes in her life. So she’s heading to the river near Fernside to scatter her dad’s ashes and take stock.
Will this idyllic setting provide the comfort Tilly needs, and will her connections with Constance and James heal her heart…?
Although passionate about writing from an early age, Heidi Swain gained a degree in Literature, flirted briefly with a newspaper career, married and had two children before she finally plucked up the courage to join a creative writing class and take her literary ambitions seriously.
A lover of Galaxy bars, vintage paraphernalia and the odd bottle of fizz, she now writes contemporary fiction and enjoys the company of a whole host of feisty female characters.
Heidi can be found at the keyboard at all hours of the day and night and quite often scribbling longhand in her car during her lunch break. She lives in stunning south Norfolk with her wonderful son and daughter and a mischievous cat called Storm.
I thoroughly enjoyed this heart warming story. Set in the Suffolk countryside, in the village of Willowwell, Fernside is a Georgian house owned by Constance, who has lived there all her life and loves the house and Willowell Woods. Tilly has decided to give up her job and take a vacation at Willowell while she decides what to do with the rest of her life. When she sees Willowell Woods are up for sale, she thinks she has found the perfect solution. She meets Constance, who is selling the woods to raise money, and the two hit it off, and they decide to help each other out. It changes both of their lives. That is, until Constance's nephew, James, turns up, and he does not want to sell the woods.
I loved the characters in this book; they were lovely, and I really liked them all. Tilly, with her optimism, was full of hope for the future and so kind to everyone. Constance was a really determined character and definitely knew her own mind. Then there is James, handsome and a bit of a conundrum, especially when he puts a spanner in the plans.
This was such an easy read that I didn't want to put it down. I read it during long waits during jury service, and it brightened my day. If you are looking for a well written story with great characters and a lovely storyline, then you will want to read Walking on Sunshine. #Netgalley
I was so excited to have the opportunity to read Walking on sunshine as I love Heidi’s books and this one is now my new favourite! Such a warm, comforting hug of a book just perfect and such a beautiful heartfelt read that will stay with you long after reading it! Based in Suffolk we are introduced to the lovely Fernside area and the important Willowell woods that play the most integral part of the story, an area that Tilly the main character has such fond memories of as a child, returning now as an adult to carry out a final goodbye to her father and take a sabbatical from her previous life we follow her on a really heartwarming journey of discovery as she makes new friends, puts down roots and finds love, such great characters I loved Constance and a really wholesome storyline Would highly recommend Thank you NetGalley for this early read
Walking on Sunshine is exactly the kind of novel that feels like stepping into a sun‑dappled clearing after a long, difficult season—gentle, hopeful, and full of heart. Heidi Swain brings Willowell, Suffolk to life with her trademark blend of warmth, community spirit, and a touch of quiet magic. Tilly’s arrival in Willowell, carrying her father’s ashes and the weight of recent heartbreak, sets the tone for a story about renewal and the courage it takes to begin again. Her connection to Willowell Woods is immediate and deeply felt, and I loved how her vision for the land becomes a catalyst not just for her own healing, but for the village itself.
James is a wonderfully drawn counterpart—rooted, loyal, and fiercely protective of the woods he’s loved since childhood. The chemistry between him and Tilly is soft and slow-burning, the kind that grows through shared purpose and gentle understanding rather than grand gestures. Their romance feels grounded and believable, shaped by the landscape around them.
Constance is a standout—wise, stubborn, and quietly vulnerable. Her storyline adds emotional depth, exploring what it means to let go without losing the past. Watching her navigate change was just as satisfying as the central romance.
Swain’s sense of place is, as ever, irresistible. Willowell Woods becomes a character in its own right—lush, restorative, and threaded with nostalgia. The novel radiates summer: riverbanks, woodland paths, and the comforting hum of village life.
This is a story about finding home—sometimes in a place, sometimes in a person, and sometimes in the version of yourself you’re finally ready to become. Uplifting, tender, and beautifully atmospheric, Walking on Sunshine is a perfect summer escape.
With thanks to Heidi Swain, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
Tilly goes back to Willowell to scatter her Dad's ashes, a place where she and her brother have good memories of camping holidays with their Dad when they were children. She is at a crossroads in her life and when she stumbles across Willowell Woods she has a vision of what her future may be. To her delight, she finds out they are for sale by the delightful Constance, who, when she finds Tilly is between homes, invites her to stay in her annexe. Life is really looking up when she meets James, a lawyer torn between duty and his love for the outdoors. What could possibly go wrong...?
Walking on Sunshine is the perfect title for this novel and, indeed, for all Heidi Swain novels. Reading a Heidi Swain book is like opening a door on a sunnier, warmer world that I would love to inhabit every day. This novel is no exception. I loved the relationship between Tilly and Constance and the hint of mystery about Constance's past. It was obvious from early on that James was not all he seemed and I was holding my breath to see how that all worked out. All the inhabitants of Willowell were absolutely delightful (with one notable exception) and I would pack up my bags and move there tomorrow if I could! I wish also that the Greenman was my local (despite having a lovely local of my own) and that I could go and spend an evening there with Tilly and her friends, drinking the fiendishly strong local brew and eating a pizza. If anyone is looking for a total escape from the often fraught worries of the modern world, this is the book you have been waiting for. Wonderful!
As a big fan of Heidi Swain's books I was very excited to receive an early copy as I've read almost every one of her books (I'm aiming to finish the rest of them this year). Walking on Sunshine is set in a gorgeous new location; this time we're visiting Willowell in the gorgeous Suffolk countryside. With a new setting also comes new characters to fall in love with, and I certainly did just that!
Tilly has had a lot of upset and upheaval in her life recently, what with losing her beloved Dad and walking away from a job that was no longer making her fulfilled. Having spent many a happy childhood holiday in Willowell, Tilly and her brother decided it would be the perfect location to scatter their Dad's ashes and she books a few days in the idyllic village.
The village sounds absolutely beautiful and also welcoming to Tilly as a newcomer, especially when a possible business venture arises which was the last thing she expected from her visit. The locals all seem to accept Tilly with open arms, although getting around Constance might take a bit more work. Constance in her mid-eighties, has always lived in the same house and is very much set in her ways. Although as Tilly got her to know her I started to warm to her too; she's definitely a character you wouldn't want to cross.
James is a brilliant love interest for Tilly; they have a lot in common but it's clear he's not entirely happy with his job and it's holding him back from doing what he really loves. I enjoyed watching the two of them get to know each other as they spent more time together, and was of course hoping that they could move past some obstacles and get the happy ending they both deserve.
Once again Heidi Swain has created that magical blend of Romance and community spirit that I love so much in her books. The new setting was beautiful, and I'm really hoping for some more books about some of the other characters that I met along the way.

This was such a lovely and comforting heartwarming read. The story was lovely and heartwarming with a good cast of characters that felt like old friends. Heidi's stories always have beautiful place settings too. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the publisher Simon & Schuster UK, the author Heidi Swain and Netgalley for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity from the publisher Simon & Schulster UK, to read and review "Walking on sunshine" by Heidi Swain, one of my favourite authors.
Previously, books written by Heidi Swain are based in Norfolk, but this book has jumped the county lines into Suffolk. It features a village called "Willowell", where the main character, Tilly used to spend childhood summer holidays with her Dad and brother.
Tilly returns to Willowell to scatter the her Father's ashes, which brings back many memories of her halcyon summers, especially the fields by the river and her dream house "Fernside". On her journey to Willowell she meets James, her "Meet Cute" who rescues her hat.
Tilly is at a crossroads in her life, she has given up the job that she hates, handed in her notice on the flat share and has the seeds of a business idea she would like to grow. She spots a "For Sale" sign for Willowell woods that would be the perfect location for her new venture.
Life takes a turn when Tilly meets the owner of the woods, Constance" who can make Tilly's dreams come true. But things like a love life can get in the way of Tilly'a plans.
I really enjoyed reading "Walking on sunshine". The writing flows beautifully, allowing the reader to visualise everything. In my opinion, this book is a must read!
I have read several previous books from Heidi Swain and really enjoyed them. So, I was looking forward her new novel Walking on Sunshine. Tilly has returned to the place where she shared happy memories with her dad and brother Zack when they were children. Now years on, she has returned to scatter her father ashes and It’s the last thing he wanted. She is also at the crossroads in her life. She has just left her job in HR and would like to start a new chapter. When she sees Fernside the lovely mansion and the beautiful idyllic woods that are next to it. It brings back memories of happier times. Then she sees a for sale as the woods are up for sale. An idea soon comes to her head that she would like to buy them. But its not all plain sailing to convince the elderly owner Constance to sell the woods to her. Especially with her new love interest and connection to the woods himself. This is another beautifully written book from Heidi Swain with the beautifully setting of the river and the woods that you can dream actually being there. The characters were very likeable and liked the relationships especially how Constance and Tilly got on together. I found the love interest part of the story a bit slow going but it ramped up towards the end. This is a great read for a lovely sunny day. 4 stars from me.
Having read and enjoyed All Wrapped Up last autumn I was looking forward to another seasonal read from Heidi Swain- this time for summer.
Tilly is travelling to the village she spent many summers as a child to spread her late father’s ashes. Whilst there she soon remembers how happy she always felt there as a child and quickly makes some new friends in the locals. When she sees a for sale sign by Willowell Woods she decides to make enquiries with the owner as they could be exactly the new start she’s looking for. Constance the owner and Tilly soon form a lovely friendship, but little do they know they already have another connection in the form of Tilly’s new love interest.
I loved how the friendship between Tilly and Constance developed- they were both just what the other needed, and it was beautiful to see them support and care for each other. I was less of a fan of James at times and he frustrated me but I liked Tilly’s brother Zach and the friends she made in the village. Their found family felt very strong and the descriptions of the village were wonderful- it felt like you were there in the middle of summer time!
Thank you to the author, Simon & Schuster UK, and NetGalley UK for this ARC.
Aw, Heidi Swain does it again with a lovely story in a rural setting, guaranteed to warm your heart and make you wish you lived in the countryside. Looking for life change, heroine Tilly stops off for a few days at her childhood holiday haunt where she and her brother spent many happy summers with their widowed father. A few days becomes weeks as Tilly makes friends, meets imperious older woman Constance, who offers her a home, and begins plans for the woodland that Constance is selling and that Tilly hopes to buy. Add in handsome James, whom Tilly encounters in such a meet-cute way, and it looks like her future happiness is secure. But of course there are many obstacles to overcome before Tilly can look forward to a happy-ever-after,. The story races along, with the introduction of lively characters, challenges for Tilly both large and small, and a narrative that takes as many twists and turns as the woody pathways she hopes to own. I love Heidi Swain's books. They are the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of everyday life, and with all that's going wrong with the world today, it's good to imagine a peaceful corner of it, where people care for each other and for the environment we're in danger of losing. A wonderful, feel-good read..
How exciting to be given a new setting for a Heidi Swain story! I loved the move to Suffolk, it was so beautifully described and it was wonderful to discover a brand new community to hang out with! Tilly soon made her mark on my heart, having lost her parents, it was emotional watching her return to a favourite location to spread her beloved dad’s ashes. It was captivating to see her connect with a mysterious stranger on her visit to the area, and to witness her finding a potential future in the place that feels like home. Constance was a brilliant character ( Heidi really does amazing older characters) It was fascinating to see her embrace the friendship with Tilly. Their connection was truly heartwarming, a trademark Heidi writing skill - mixing old and young people together. The gentle romance was also lovely to witness - you really find yourself routing for it to work! A fabulous host of supporting characters made this story come alive and I hope we get to hear their stories soon. I cannot wait to return and to see what else happens in this delightful community. A complete ray of sunshine, this was so enjoyable to read - another summer smash from Swain!
Tilly and her brother used to visit Willowell in Suffolk for their holidays with their dad every year after their mum died. They made some great memories of the area so when their dad died Tilly decided to go and scatter his ashes on the river opposite a house, Fernside. The next day Tilly decided to have a closer look at Fernside and saw a notice in the woods next to it advertising the woods were for sale. She was looking for a new direction in her life and had an idea she could run a business from the woods helping people to love nature as much as she did. She met Constance, the owner of the house and woods and built up a friendship with her leading to her renting a small apartment in the grounds of Fernside while Tilly can work out if she should buy the woods and Constance whether she should sell them to her.
Another brilliant book by Heidi Swain which I could not put down. Heidi had such a lovey way of writing and the whole book just flowed.
Tilly is struggling after losing her father and returns to Willowell where she has fond childhood memories to scatter her dad’s ashes. In a perfect act of fate things soon begin to fall in to place and her life begins to change for the better.
The characters in this book were brilliantly described and Constance was a lovely character. The setting was just beautiful and there were plenty of different plots to focus on.
An excellent 5 star read which I would recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley, Heidi Swain and Simon and Schulster for an advance pivot in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A delightful read that Heidi has set in Suffolk. Tilly has returned to Willowell to scatter her dad's ashes after spending many happy holidays there with her brother after their mother's death. Tilly soon becomes immersed with the community of Willowell. Staying with Constance at Fernside, these two form a lovely bond. Mixing older characters with younger ones is something Heidi does so well. I loved the setting and really look forward to hearing the stories of the other characters. Willowell connected everyone in different ways. There is also a little romance to sweep us along. This is a surefire winner. Thanks to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster UK for the invitation to read in return for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon and schuster Uk for this eArc in return for my honest opinion.
I was so happy to receive this early copy as I’m a huge Heidi fan, and she did not disappoint.
What a lovely and uplifting read. You can always count on Heidi to provide a story of pure love in many forms not just romantic and you know you’re going to end with a lovely new couple to adore.
The meet cute and romance between FMC Tilly and MMC James was so sweet ( although at the end I was ready for Tilly to hurry up and tell him her plans ) but for me I absolutely loved the dynamics of the Tilly and Constance, the elderly woman with who Tilly forms such a lovely bond.
Tilly heads to WIllowell to scatter her dad's ashes, and discovers the local woods are up for sale. The location would be perfect for Tilly who has just left her job, and has ideas for a new business. Can she persuade elderly owner Constance to sell them to her?
This is a new Suffolk setting for Heidi Swain, and I hope it becomes the first in a series as I want to know where the story goes next! The author writes such relatable characters (including the animals!), and I loved Zack and Kaya, I hope they get their own book. A Heidi Swain novel is like wrapping yourself up in a cosy blanket, you know you are going to get emotion and friendship - a must read author for me.
Tilly has decided to bring her dad’s ashes to Willowell - a place where they had been happy following the death of her mother from cancer. She has left her job and is now evaluating what to do next.
She is inspired by the local woods which are for sale and begins to plan out a possible eco educational project. Her plans are thwarted by James - her landlady’s nephew who is very hostile to the sale going ahead. It is complicated by their feelings for each other.
She builds up her connections in the village and particularly with Constance but she does not want to upset the family dynamic or spoil her potential relationship.
A fabulous new book from Heidi and with a gorgeous new setting Willowell Suffolk. This story breathes romance and nature as Willowell woods features throughout. I loved the new characters and the deep connection Tilly has with her brother and the beautiful house Fernside that meant so much to them during their childhood. Tilly is ready for renewal in her life but it doesn’t come easy when a family is in disagreement. A lovely heart warming story which is a definite 5 star read. My thanks to Net Galley and publishers S&S for the advanced copy.
A gentle meet-cute for fans of found family, inter-generational friendship, and the need for being outdoors.
Indeed, with the world being on fire, it is lovely to read about people who are fed up with unfulfilling jobs and unreasonably demanding bosses. When you can – and if you are able – follow your heart. Or your nose to the woods :)
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
A Heidi Swain read is always like being enveloped in an enormous hug and Walking on Sunshine is no exception. Tilly and her brother Zack have recently lost their father, and Tilly decides that the most fitting place to say farewell to her precious dad is Willowell; a place the family made some happy memories. What follows is a heartfelt joyous read that provides pure escapism and a moment to reflect and reconnect.
This book had me yearning for hot summer days in East Anglia. The description of Willowell and the river had me practically smelling the summer area and hearing the sounds of the countryside. Although you could easily see where the relationship aspect of the story was going, this did not detract from the book at all. I loved it, just like every Heidi Swain book, as they are like warm hugs that you didn’t even know you needed.
A beautiful heartwarming read that leaves a total sense of well being and ease. Extremely likeable characters that were very easy to relate to and all played a powerful part in the storyline. This is a story of hope and rebuild after a bereavement, about following your dreams and never giving up hope despite what barriers are thrown in along the way. Romance humour and happy endings.. what is there not to like. Highly recommend a read. Thank you net galley and Heidi Swain.
A breath of summer air, I fell in love with Willowell and with Tilly. The story moved at a good pace and the characters were likable. Being a nature lover the description of the woods, garden and river made it all seem idyllic and a place I would like to visit. Constance is the aged aunt you would love to have, slightly vulnerable but still full of mischief and drive. A great book to escape in to.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the setting & enjoyed getting to know the characters, so much, that I hope this maybe the first book in a new series. As usual with this author, I felt I could easily picture the setting, and I enjoyed seeing the friendships develope. This is a book I would definitely recommend.
A sweet story perfect for a summer read. Lots of lovely characters mostly grieving for lost family members, all coming together for a great cause to help heal. There’s a romance, some misunderstandings, community spirit, wild swimming and of course a daft dog - it’s all very lovely however a tad unlikely. I think we all need a bit a dream to follow and this one, even if it is fiction, is perfect
I received a free copy of, Walking on Sunshine, by Heidi Swain, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Change is never easy, but changes happen whether we like then or not. This was another great read by, Heidi Swain, I love her characters and the setting.
Review of advanced reader copy book from netgalley
I adore Heidi swain and her books, this one did not disappoint. A lovely summer story with the usual heart warming characters and beautiful description of the village and settings.
A must read especially if you love wonderful stories
Another great home warming story from the Queen of ‘make yourself comfortable, grab a cuppa’ and emerge yourself in pure escapism to Willowell Woods. I don’t need to say more, a Heidi Swain book is always a joy Thank you to Netgalley
