H.U.M.A.N.S: The Veiled World: Chronicle 1: Supernatural Selection

Rate this book
Creatures born of a different God, or human beings as we call them, know and understand little about the Universe around them— much less the one that mirrors theirs. Things aren’t always what they seem to the naked eye, especially when you aren’t paying attention. That’s the beauty of their world though, it’s so easy to live and thrive undetected.
My brother Cole and I are twin Hybrid Hunters. We’ve lived content and discreetly among and like human beings for so long, that many of us, as well as the Elementals that have become like family, have almost forgotten that— we aren’t.
Like any race of living beings, it’s the bad ones that always ruin it for everyone. No good thing can ever last for long no matter what or where you are. The sudden appearance of a deadly Nocturna on our hidden island turned out to be the least of our worries. It was the unexpected attack that left me at the mercy of a disgusting curse and would forever change my life as a born Hunter. The mysterious stranger who simply showed up to claim the undead intruder, turned out to be far more of a dangerous threat to us.
I had to learn quickly that even in a perfect world, the hunter becoming the hunted confirms that every being has something to fear—even the Nocturna.
And that hunter is . . . Me.

Susan currently resides in Texas. She was born in Thailand and is biracial. Though she holds a Bachelors in Forensic Psychology and Criminal justice, her passion and interests lie in the supernatural, paranormal, and all things not seen by the naked eye. This fascination results in her love of creating new worlds, memorable characters, and ideas for others to ponder, escape to, and overall enjoy through the power of the written word.
She is a brand new author working to make her mark in the vast literary world. Television is often background noise for her, as Susan loves to spend much of her free time reading, and writing; something she has done ever since she was little. Not having many toys or even cable growing up—(although looking back, she feels that was a good thing in many ways) certainly helped to forge and nourish her imagination and passion for story-telling. She doesn't have any current accolades to mention or a long list of works that she has written, even though she's been writing for many, many years, but that has since changed with the publication of the second novel in her first series. She is very excited to finally be able to share it with the world and so many others who also love a good supernatural, paranormal, urban, or dark fantasy. In her spare time, she loves to watch martial arts movies, cook, bake, paint, make jewelry, and basically attempt just about anything artsy craftsy. Susan can't stand to leave a mess and goes crazy when she can't fix something. She will spend hours trying to fix or resolve some of the most complex of problems and issues.
She is a single mother to two amazing adult children.
The Divinity Saga is her first series, She looks forward to meeting readers and other authors, and even more so, interacting with and making new friends all over the world.

H.U.M.A.N.S: The Veiled World: Chronicle 1: Supernatural Selection is about Kai (a Hybrid Hunter) and her unlikely group of friends. Each of her friends are different types of elementals (meaning that they have different powers) who have all come together in the human world while trying to avoid detection from the Ascendants (people who had wiped out the majority of each of their races). Kai and her twin brother Cleo, built a bar (the first of its kind) that was protected and hidden by magic which allowed all beings to come together and live peacefully while surrounded by humans who were unaware of those with whom they were sharing an island. As a Hunter, it is Kai's job to watch out for the Nocturna and kill them before they can kill humans or give away their secret location. During one mission, Kai is bitten by a Nocturna. Even though she survived (which is practically unheard of) she suffered a nasty bite that cannot seemed to be cured but is noticeably changing her. In walks Gage. During her first meeting with Gage, Kai suspected that he was Nocturna, but he confesses that he really is half Nocturna and half Hunter. He, at one time, was also a survivor of a Nocturna bite, like Kai, and is helping her accept and adapt to her new lifestyle. The rest of the book has some magic, fight scenes, romance and a bit of suspense.

Okay, let's start with the parts of the story I enjoyed. I liked all of the elementals, particularly Isis and later Neilah. All of the characters are well thought out and very detailed. As a reader, you can sense how much they care about each other and the bond that they have created among themselves for their protection and how important their roles are in order to keep themselves safe. Even though this is not the kind of story that I typically read, it was easy to understand what was going on, as well as what they each brought to the table. The fight scenes and magic were very descriptive and enjoyable.

I hated the romance scenes with Gage. Typically I enjoy a bit of romance, but this was a bit disturbing at first. The first time they meet, there is this "spark". For their second meeting, it's like an awkward connection. Third is a date which leads to Kai sleeping at his house, turning down his advances at sex, only to sleep in lingerie brought to her room by one of his attractive female workers who share his house, only to disappear before he woke up. Then there is the time where they actually have sex and Gage uses her belt to secure her hands behind her back and her t shirt as a gag. Seriously? Well, that escalated quickly... No lie. It's just weird kinky sex that Kai's semi-boyfriend walks in on during their fourth or fifth meeting. Then, they have sex again, and Kai thinks that it is a wonderful time to ask him (even after they just fucked all night) would he still want to go home to his wife and daughter. He says yes. Sure, it is explained in the end, and it's innocent, but if I were her, I would not have stuck around and continued to have sex with the guy all the while hoping for more dates. I would have been pissed. Or maybe not since I was aware that he had a wife and decided to have sex with him anyway before knowing the whole story. So clearly, if that were the case, I would be a slut anyway... She is skanky and not a really enjoyable main character. She just seems pathetic when it comes to him when she really could have been such a dominant lead female character. She could have had a normal relationship with Gage or even with Marq. That would have been a good story since it is unheard of for his kind to have relationships with anyone but themselves.

All in all, I will read the next book in the series and give it a chance since I would like to know more about what happens to Neilah and why. This mystery Nocturna really was the best part of the whole book.

WARNING: Mature Readers 17+ due to graphic scenes and language.

I found Susan Reid’s "H.U.M.A.N.S." to be surprisingly good! I had my doubts after reading another review. But, once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down.

I have to admit I had a hard time categorizing Reid’s book. At first, I was thinking maybe Young Adult. It seemed an innocent read until I got to the first physical encounter between Kai and Gage. If you’re good with a little kink, this is the couple to read about. Fortunately, I have no problem with that element and pressed on. I actually liked the character of Gage. The mysteries surrounding him made me want to know more. I even appreciated Kai’s character. She was a strong protagonist not afraid to get a little blood on her hands.

I did get lost at one point with all the different characters. The story starts with Kai, her brother Cole, Isis and one other person. They meet a nameless Nocturna and then Gage. In the next chapter, we meet Kai’s ‘not boyfriend’ Marq. Enough characters to keep up with. A little bit further Reid throws in a bunch of other characters and names them. I could have done without knowing the names of all the minor characters.

The Nocturna is an interesting take on vampire lore. The main character, Kai, is bitten by one in the beginning of the book. She starts to transform into a hybrid of a Hunter and a Nocturna. Her Hunter persona is actually a hybrid between humanoid and an animal, Tiger. This new form feeds on blood from pure Nocturnas instead of humans.

Reid does intermingle humor in this book. First, there’s Marq, a Water Elemental, who shows up at the local supernatural bar naked. There are continuous jokes about his appearance. I think the Princess Brownie Faerie is the best. She looks like a child but has a mouth that would shame a sailor. This is the second book I've read where diminutive fae have an obsession with phallic symbols. What’s up with that?

"H.U.M.A.N.S." was not a real cliffhanger, but it did leave unanswered questions. What happened to the royal Nocturna, Nailah? What happens with the Brownie Faerie? How long will Kai and Gage be able to live in Puerto Vallarta without access to more Nocturnas?

Reid has promised a follow up to "H.U.M.A.N.S." I hope these questions are answered along with more about Gage.

I received this book through one of the free giveaways here on Goodreads. I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed the characters and the growth of Kai as she navigates the changes she ends up going through. I'm extremely interested to see where the rest of the series takes me! With this being the first book in the series it really sucks you in and makes you cant to continue on the journey with the characters.
