I took me a long time to get to this book because I knew from the author that it’s the second part in her series, and the previous one wasn’t M/M but M/F. I also knew from the author that the characters from this book appear and actually meet in the previous part. With that knowledge, I wasn’t particularly tempted to start reading, but I finally gave it a go. And this is how it turned out: I had a really hard time fully immersing myself in the story. The characters who appeared had clearly been introduced earlier, already knew each other, and had established relationships, while I felt like I’d been thrown into a completely foreign world, helplessly looking around like a lost child in the fog.
This feeling lasted through roughly a quarter of the book. I pushed through the beginning purely by sheer force of will. That’s why I immediately recommend starting with part one and only then moving on to part two. Otherwise, if you, like me, struggle with focusing on too many threads at once, you might feel like you’ve been dropped into the middle of the story instead of at the beginning.
Eventually, though, I started to feel the story, and I must give credit to the author: the chemistry between the characters was very interesting and fairly well-developed. However, I’m not a fan of her dialogue style—I prefer more dialogue tags, and without them, some conversations felt a bit dry to me. That said, because the story is built gradually, the chemistry was established in a solid way.
I especially want to praise the sex scenes—they’re really well done, long, and detailed, but also very romantic. To me, that’s probably the biggest highlight of this story: the intimacy between the protagonists is so beautifully portrayed that it’s essentially the essence of the entire narrative, at least for me, as I was mostly waiting for the development of their relationship.
My rating for this story would probably be a five if it weren’t for that initial difficulty. So, for those who’ve read the first part, you can confidently pick up this book because you’ll be properly immersed in this world. However, reading the second part first definitely requires some effort, which might lead some readers to abandon it early on.
That said, this is a nicely written romantic story full of touching moments, challenges, very slow burn, and definitely deserves attention. Therefore, I think that even if you’re not typically into M/F romances, to give this one a fair chance, try to read the first part first and then move on to the second for the full effect. That way, your rating will surely be higher.
This is a review based on the ARC version, though I added it quite late 😕
