This story book is full of adventures that Alfie has with his grandma, helping lost sheep, finding a tortoise that gives missing and walking in the rain and exploring grannies treasures.
This book would be suitable for older children because it has full sentences which younger children may become bored and lose interest whereas older children could read the sentences and understand the story.

Alfie loves being with his grandma .it celebrates that special relationship .situations are familiar to children.They can relate to the experiences in the book .It shows the gentle relationship between Alfie and his sister and their country living.good for 4 to 11 yr olds and grandparents too.A lovely family tale .Good

I love the Alfie books and I love that my little boys love them too. The writing is an in elevated style rarely seen these days in children's books, in addition to the fact that everyday family life is portrayed beautifully through Shirley Hughes' artwork and storytelling. These treasures are worth owning and returning to again and again!

Some stories that parents read with their children encourage them to make funny voices, giggle or dance around. Some stories lend themselves more to more intellectual discussions with their children about nature or geography. Still others are just perfect for a good cuddle on the couch together. The stories in "Alfie and Grandma" are all of these things wrapped together.
My child is 6 years old and quite capable of reading Alfie all on her own; however, when I saw this collection of Alfie stories I knew that it would be a much richer experience for us both if we read it together. So, I insisted that we sit down and read together. I am so glad that we did.
It was one of those special moments where we both blocked out the world around us. We just focused on the story and each other. Initially, I was only going to read the first story but my daughter kept asking for more. It was her first ever Alfie story but she was immediately enchanted by his adventures with Grandma. The illustrations reminded her of my parent's farm. She started asking questions about the animals in the story, namely the mischievous turtles Winnie and Fred. She quickly identified with Alfie's adventures to the "North Pole" in Grandma's attic because she also loves to imagine herself as an explorer or conqueror (costumes and jerry-rigged tents are common in our house). The last story had her giggling each time I said that the sheep "baa-ed" and the map at the end made it all seem very real. We kept discussing the stories and the map for a long time after we finished reading.
I found her later studying the pictures and thinking to herself-- a sign of a very good children's book indeed! The stories are perfect for our bedtime routine (or really anytime we need to have some special mommy-time) because they are intriguing, sentimental and real. I am sure that this book will be read again and again in our home—a definite keeper.
