The Five Kingdoms #5

The Orc's Captive Bride

Rate this book
The Five Kingdoms are poised to fall into eternal darkness. All hope lies in a forgotten prophecy—and a woman from another world.

Dr. Thea Monroe knows nothing of prophecies. She only knows she's been transported to a strange new world, kidnapped by a terrifying orc warrior, and is being dragged toward the heart of an enemy's empire. Her only chance at survival is to outwit her captor, a male taught to be a monster. But his reluctant care and fierce protection tempt her to believe he could be so much more.

Khorrek was bred for one to obey. But his beautiful new captive, a brilliant woman with fire in her eyes, challenges his every command and sees through the lies that have defined his existence. He was sent to deliver the final piece of his master's puzzle, but Thea may be the one person who can help him destroy it.

In the final battle for the future of the Five Kingdoms, a monster must become a hero, a captive must become a queen, and two souls from different worlds will have to risk everything for a love that could save them all…

Although each book in the Five Kingdoms series can be read as a standalone romance, there is an overall series arc which concludes in this book. This sweet and steamy romance is intended for mature readers.

‘The orc’s captive bride’ is the final book in ‘The five kingdoms’ series and in this story we see two brave individuals fight (in their own way) against a dangerous king.

Dr. Thea Monroe is a scholar, a linguist. Someone who spends most of her days with her nose in ancient books, rediscovering old cultures and their languages. She has no social life, her work is her passion, her life. So when she awakens naked in a strange world, she’s confused, where is she? She’s found by a large, scarred Orc warrior. But despite the strange situation and the fact that she doesn’t speak his language, Thea feels safe with him. The Orc, whose name is Khorrek, takes her to the big city Kel’Vara, where High King Lasseran rules. Along the way, Khorrek teaches Thea his language, he's patient and gentle with her. To both their surprise Thea learns his language very quickly. It’s almost magical! In Kel’Vara, Thea soon discovers why she has been transported to this world. High King Lasseran is an evil and dangerous man who wants complete control over all Orcs. He needs her help to translate an ancient text to perform a magical, blood ritual. Once Thea understands the translation’s purpose, she does everything she can to stop Lasseran. Fortunately, she gets help from Khorrek (who is now her guard) and Master Volrak, an old and wise priest whose knowledge of the past is very useful for the translation. But the longer Thea stays there, the more dangerous it becomes for her. For their own safety, she and Khorrek must flee to Norhaven. There, Thea deciphers the text and its secrets, the text offers them a chance to restore the balance of the Beast curse. But it’s dangerous and sacrifices will have to be made. Time is running out. Ultimately, Thea will have to choose between her love for Khorrek (who’s her mate) and reversing the beast curse. It means trusting the Old Gods and their magic. There’s a reason the old Gods have chosen Thea for this. She’s a woman who always chooses justice, even when it’s a difficult decision. Lasseran must be stopped, there’s no other choice.

I knew this was the last book in the series, so I expected a battle between the evil king and the Orcs. But this story was so much more. It was an emotional, romantic tale of hope, sacrifice, love, friendship and faith in magic. About two lonely people who didn’t believe that love was for them, yet found a deep love with each other. The tall, scarred Khorrek was a very fascinating character. He was an orphan, and like the other Orcs in Kel’Vara, he was raised by Lasseran and his men. That meant physical and emotional pain, no love and lies. He was Lasseran’s weapon, a dangerous soldier. Khorrek followed orders without question, but everything changed when he met Thea, a human female. She may have been small but she was strong and fearless. Khorrek was fascinated by her brilliant mind and her stubbornness to do the right thing, even for strangers. She made him question everything. It was painful for him to realize that he had caused so much harm to innocent people, but Thea made him brave enough to do the right thing now. Both were very strong in their own way. The complemented each other well and trusted each other completely. The mate bond between them was strong. Khorrek was very protective of Thea, his loyalty and focus now lay with his mate. They supported each other through everything. For an Orc who had never experienced love, he love Thea deeply. It was moving to watch. Thea was such an amazing woman. So brave, even when she was terrified.

We got both POV’s and there were few sex scenes. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces again and also meet a few new inhabitants of this world.

The author gave us a wonderful ending to this series. I especially appreciate that the story was a bit bigger, that the author took her time to tell the story.

I’ve loved this series, but this book is beyond awesome as the finale. Thea, is a linguist from our world and she is brought to the 5 Kingdoms world by magic. Only herself and her glasses arrive, not her clothes. She arrives on the altar in the stone circle. She has been a prodigy, in the linguistic world able to crack almost any puzzle. There she meets an orc. Dr. Thea Monroe is shocked at all of this. She meets Khorrek, and she learns the language quickly on the way back to High King Lasseran’s Obsidian Keep. Khorrek is surprised at how much he is drawn to Thea. His inner Beast keeps trying to tell him that Thea is theirs, their Mate. His backup are three cruel men- Brennik, Dann & Harrick, to bring Thea back to Kel’Vara. I thought Lasseran was terrifying in the other books. I was right, but he is sooooo much worse in this book. Khorrek is assigned as Thea’s guard, and he does his best to protect her and to do what his King wants. She must decipher an ancient text so that Lasseran can take the last of the orcs and for them to be wholly under his control. Learning about the link between Lasseran’s bloodline and what is happening to the orcs, was horrifying. I cried a bit as well as chewed on my nails and needed the AC on. The book is fun, funny, sweet, romantic, scary, exciting, great fight scenes, and steamy. I love how Khorrek changes in this book. How he falls for Thea and she for him. How she truly sees him is beautiful. Mira is the woman assigned as a servant bringing meals and such for Thea, while Master Vorag is on of the Veiled Priests, as her advisor and helper in figuring out the books. Learning more about the Veiled priests was fascinating as they weren’t really talked about much, but they are such an integral part of Lasseran’s power structure. In deciphering the ancient books and scrolls, we learn all about how the orcs got their Beasts, etc. Just wow, so mind blowing. We also learn more about the old gods. Learning how Khorrek and the other orcs that are Lasseran’s were trained - totally horrific. I cried. Thea changes everything for so many. It is inspiring, and beautiful. Learning what Lasseran wants to do is so bad. I ranted, punched my pillow and just go so upset. The fight scenes are awesome. I loved the book and I’m really sad that the series is over. I would’ve liked to have learned more about the Veiled Priests and how all the different kingdoms came about. The ending is mind blowing.

⭐️ DNF at 52%

I’m a little surprised by this one, mostly because this is the final book in the series — but after getting over halfway through, I feel completely at peace with my decision to DNF The Orc’s Captive Bride.

I actually started this book twice. The first time, I put it down after the opening chapters because the early focus on nudity and lust made me cringe. It wasn’t extreme, but I wasn’t in the mood for it. I picked it back up weeks later and continued on — and I’m glad I did, because that initial lust-forward tone was short-lived and didn’t continue. The book genuinely improved after that, and for a while, I was enjoying myself.

There was travel and adventure (which I always love in fantasy), and I liked the MMC’s characterization in theory — the emotionally controlled “weapon” who is slowly undone by his feelings for the FMC. We do get to see his softer, protective side emerge, and that part did work for me.

Unfortunately, the pacing and structure ultimately lost me. The plot felt both drawn out and oddly rushed at the same time. We spend a lot of time circling the same mystery, repeating similar steps day after day, and then suddenly the mystery is solved rather quickly. Once the couple gets together, the yearning disappears — and with roughly 50% of the book still left, neither the romance nor the mystery was doing anything to keep me engaged.

At that point, I knew the end goal. I didn’t know every detail of how they’d get there, but the outcome felt obvious and predictable. I wasn’t curious anymore — and that’s the biggest issue.

I ended up skimming the last several chapters, and that really confirmed my decision. Nothing felt confusing, nothing felt emotionally missing, and I never felt the urge to slow down and reread anything. I didn’t feel like I was missing out by not fully reading it.

This wasn’t a bad book — but it ran out of tension, momentum, and emotional payoff long before the end. At this point, I feel like my understanding of the series is complete enough without forcing myself to finish.

A comfortable, confident DNF.

If you're hoping for a good redemption story, here's the book you've been waiting for.

This series started off interesting but not compelling. But through the rest of thw books, the arc of this plot turned into something really worth reading.

Orcs are fairly popular male leads. And most follow a templated path. These orcs are different. Yes, they look green and behave brutally a good bit of the time. But the plot of this story fuels their history with so much more depth.

This book details the adventures of Khorrek, a bad guy who has appeared in every volume in the series. There were hints almost from the beginning that he had doubts about his role. This book tells us about his backstory, his emotions, what has impacted him and his motivations. He is sent to snatch Thea, a human woman who is pulled through a portal to help the bad king decipher and complete a ritual that will enslave all the orcs. Thea is a nerdy linguist with the skills to figure out the ritual. There are a number of complex theories and conversations in this story, but they didn't detract or drag out the story. This book added real depth to the overarching plot of the series. Khorrek had the longest journey of everyone and this is a satisfying completion.

I gave this 3 stars because there were a number of dialogue passages that just seemed like filler. The timing got very weird, much like a bad transmission jumping forward and back. I did feel like I was slogging through some unnecessary retakes of info already known. Some might disagree and that's OK.

There's a lot stuffed into this last book but it's worth the read.

The Orc’s Captive Bride is the fifth and final tale in The Five Kingdoms…maybe?
Orc Warrior Khorrek has been sent on a mission by his High King Lasseran to retrieve the female he finds at the stone circle and return her to the Obsidian Keep.
But what he finds not only surprises him it sends his beast into MINE mode.
Therein will lie his predicament because he is sure Lasseran has sent him as a test of his loyalty, and he must allay the Kings suspicions.
For Dr. Thea Monroe’s part waking up naked in the stone circle after arriving in Norway to decipher unknown runes was jarring, as was walking into a mountain of an Orc in her state of undress after being sucked through a portal.
They manage to exchange names despite the language barrier and then it was time to settle in for the adventure to come.
Sigh, and was it ever a good one which I think was one of the longest I’ve read from the author, but I’m not complaining!
Excellent writing, great characterizations, plenty of action, intrigue, sweetness, family dynamics, magic, passion, prophecy, sacrifice, and a mate bond that won’t be denied.
If anyone can contort my heart and make me tear up it’s this author and the mea culpa Khorrek has to face towards the end is a heart breaker!
The balance will be restored but it was the all encompassing journey that made this one heck of a good read.
Highly Recommended!.

This is an exciting final book in The Five Kingdoms series. The stories are technically standalones, but this book should definitely be read last.

Human FMC Thea wakes up naked and quickly realizes she’s not in Kansas (or actually Cambridge) anymore, there’s a big green orc looming over her, speaking a strange language. As a linguist, she quickly starts to pick it up and realizes her captor, orc MMC Khorrek, might be her best chance at safety. Khorrek has been tasked with delivering the human to the evil High King, but he’s beginning to realize that his loyalties might be wavering.

This book is my favorite in the series and an epic conclusion! It’s about twice as long as the others, but for good reason, the story not only covers the MCs’ romance but also delivers satisfying plot resolution for the entire series. Khorrek has appeared on the periphery of several of the previous books as a henchman to the villain, so I was glad to finally get his POV and story arc. Thea was also a wonderful addition to the human characters.

It’s always bittersweet to see a series come to an end, but Phillips did a fantastic job with this final book. I can’t wait to see what she has in store next!

Amazing!

A story of redemption. When you start to question just what it is you are doing, it's time to rethink your choices. That is where warrior orc, Khorrek finds when he is ordered to bring back a human female to the high king. Thea is a scholar and linguist, an expert in deciphering ancient dead languages and finds herself naked in a circle of stones facing an orc who she doesn't understand and who doesn't understand her. She is ordered to figure out what the ancients have written so he can have absolute power and Khorrek is ordered to guard her. She sees more to him than a weapon or tool to be used like the king has trained him and his beast knows she is his mate. She realizes she must break the curse through the texts and free not only the orcs but the entire realm but the cost could be her life. I can't believe that this was my favorite story in the series. There was no way I thought I could get to the point where I would like Khorrek but I did. This had all the feels and I loved it! It is better if you read the entire series but you can read this as a standalone and not be lost. It just helps in understanding the characters and the events that have occurred prior to this one. I loved it and highly recommend it!

This is how you end a series🔥💖💖🌟🔥💖

As always Honey Phillips just doesn't disappoint this is the conclusion to the Five Kingdom's and its 100% worth the read. All the books in the series are excellent. This one is the ultimate redemption story. Khorrek has very slowly gone from an Orc who never questioned orders no matter how vile to an orc that questions everything, someone whose eyes are slowly opening to a world in which he'd been lied to a world filled with hope , belonging and forgiveness. Thea a Archaeologist and linguist one minute she is on a dig site the next she wakes on a Ceremonial altar trying to figure out where and when she is. That is until a large very scary orc of fairytales finds her. The developing relationship between Thea and Khorrek is scary, funny and beautiful to behold. Each compliments the other allowing who they truly are on a soul deep level come out and shine. This is the book where if evil is not defeated the orcs will cease to exist an love will disappear as if it was nothing but a dream.this book has everything bits of humor, action, drama magic and most of all the healing power of !I've and acceptance. I00% worth the read. Highly recommend🌟💖🔥🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟

The Linguistic saves her Orc

“He stared down at her. Amazed. Terrified. Hopelessly in love. “You’re insane,” he whispered.
“I’m effective. There’s a difference.”

Thrilling conclusion of the series!! A beautifully crafted story that is filled with emotion and heat - as well as danger and hope. Thea is a doctoral linguist transported to another world to decipher old scrolls that will give High King Lasseran immense power. Luckily Khorrek has been sent to protect her, but he must battle his feelings for her against his orders from King Lasseran. There are plenty of obstacles to rid themselves of Lasseran’s plans for the Beast Curse and Khorrek has to resist the conditioning of his childhood as well. But his beast knows Thea is his mate immediately and Thea is brave and true in her own right and she does not give up on her mate or her destiny. I love how one small human can wrap her powerful Orc around her finger and seeing his progression from lethal weapon to a life filled with freedom and friendship is moving and life affirming. Loved the segue with old friends from other books. This series is pure perfection! ❤️

Romance! Action! Suspense! Adventure! Magic! Politics! Quests! This book has it all! This is the best Honey Phillips book I have read (and I have read a lot).

The love story between Khorrek and Thea is complex and requires Khorrek to overcome a lifetime of abuse and programming; however, it is only a part of the overarching plot that requires the main characters to save all of Orc kind or sacrifice all trying. I couldn’t put it down and read until the early hours of the morning to finish the story.

The Orc’s Captive Bride finishes the Five Kingdoms series but you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this one. As a matter of fact, the first 2/3 of the book don’t reference the rest of the series at all. If you have read the rest, the last third of the book is certainly enhanced by your previous knowledge but it would still be worth the read if you didn’t want to start at the beginning.

This is a must read!!.

I loved the conclusion to an exceptional series. This, like the previous stories, is a standalone for the couple with a very interesting backstory. POV of both Thea and Khorrek and an epic HEA for them.
I loved Thea's analytical mind. She is smart and courageous. She loved to solve puzzles. I loved how she didn't back down when she first met Khorrek. She never complained even when it got rough.
Khorrek had a long road to follow when it came to breaking the chains the High King had on him and the other orcs. I loved the journey of discovery and the suport and encouragement Thea gave him.
They met allies along the way who help in unexpected ways.
A splash of humor, sage advice from an unexpected sources, mystery and action throughout. Secrets revealed.
I would love to see a future book with the people of the five kingdoms and what happens.

A wonderful story of love overcoming incredible obstacles to save the world!
Thea and Khorrek are such rich characters who find each other under magical, fated circumstances. Thea is so incredibly brave and resourceful after finding herself naked (except for her glasses thank goodness!) in a stone circle on another world. She can't understand a word Khorrek says, and he is a pretty scary looking Orc -- but she doesn't panic and quickly begins to communicate with him. Thankfully fate has delivered her into the hands of the perfect male for her!

And boy does this world ever need both of them. The adventure to save the world is riveting... while we watch them fall deeper in love. They gather allies and we have a really excellent and satisfying HEA. I highly recommend this book!.

This was an epic finale to an amazing series. The way that Honey developed her characters was addictive.

Khorrek and Thea were a captivating couple from the very beginning. Their intense relationship only grew stronger as their adventure unfolded.

The power throughout this story and within the characters was an absolute page turner. The intensity left me absorbing every detail. The horrors and atrocities that the people of this kingdom had to endure is heartbreaking.

All it took was a human female and a warrior to set the wheels in motion.

Honey, I am in awe at how you captivated your audience. This was an incredible story that took us on a wild unimaginable journey. As powerful as this story was, I am sad to see it end........Unless 🤔.

Thea is a scholar, always wanting to learn, to understand, every around her, especially the languages of others. Abducted, left by pillars on an alien planet, she was just starting to explore the symbols on the pillars when Khorrek came to her. He picked her up and strode away. They couldn't communicate with words, yet she quickly grew to trust him, and gently pushed to learn his words . Khorrek kept thinking she was a problem because he wanted to care for her, make sure she was fed and comfortable. And he had to hand her over to the high king, into danger, to transcribe an ancient text about the Beast Curse.
As I read, I smiled, got angry, was sad, terrified, comforted and tried to figure out the next steps in Honey's plot. Not possible. Honey is an amazing storyteller and leads us where she wants us to go. Sit back and enjoy this final book in The Five Kingdoms series

Action packed, danger, whimsical, orc-human romance, adventure , steamy, fated mates, and HEA.
Thea is from another world; a scholar. She finds herself captured by an orc she can't understand, but she's a linguist and learn the language quickly. Khorreck is an orc raised as a weapon by the High King, Larrsen. He's always followed orders, but now questions them. The moment he sees Thea, his beast know she's his. He'll do anything to protect his mate, even defect from the only life he has ever known. They learn that there's a ritual that can restore peace to the Five Kingdoms. The story goes on to tell they bonded through love and how broke the bondage of the orc's curse.
Very good story, losts of twist and turns. Absolutely loved it.

This entire series has been the best thing ever

I discovered Honey's writing recently and I'm just devouring everything she's written.

This is the end cap of a series I'm sad to see the end of and I'll reread again. And again. I'm being published next year and can only hope my world building and characters even come close to hers.

Thea and Khorrek might be my favorite characters in this series yet. The redemptive arc is beautiful.

Honey, if you're reading this, please more! More of this world. I want to know more about the characters after the ending! Just MORE.

This is the hallmark of good writing. This is proof of your skill. You're brilliant, love. You make us beg for more.

Honey Phillips has wound up The Five Kingdom's series with The Orc's Captive Bride. Thea awakens stark naked in a stone henge type scene and is taken captive by a giant green fierce Orc warrior. He is torn between taking her to the brutal High King and giving in to his inner beast that wants to claim her as his own. Go along on their adventure as she learns the secrets of how the High King enslaved his people, draining them of their power. Thea is a scholar of linguistics who deciphers the ancient documents that will reverse the curse and free Khorrek's people, turning her into a queen mated to an amazing male. Amazing story!

Breaking an Empire

She fell through the portal only to find an Orc waiting for her. Being a linguistic expert, she learned his language in a few days. When tasked to find answers to strengthen the curse, she found a way to break it. Watching her doing that made him a better Orc. He had his doubts as a side character in previous stories in this series, but in this one he became his own person. Both went through changes in themselves as they traveled to get their HEA. This last book in "The Five Kingdoms" series tied up all the loose ends in a very exciting magical way. Thank you Honey.

I loved this book. Another wonderful orc romance from Honey Phillips. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Thea and Khorrek. I loved the dynamic between them and the way their relationship developed Especially with the language barrier trope- which is one of my favorites in romance because then it's the characters' actions which bring out the emotions rather than relying on spoken words. The chemistry between them sizzled. She was smart and brave and awakened so much in him. This was such a beautiful, sweet fast-paced adventure with suspense and action and I was hooked from the start. (As I always am.) 5 stars

This is a fantastic addition to The Five Kingdoms series. It features action (lots of it!), suspense, and steamy chemistry. Thea is a researcher who, during her field studies, travels through time to a land ruled by evil forces. Korreck is an Orc sent by the King to bring Thea to the palace. A bond develops between Korreck and Thea despite the dangers and intrigue they face. This book kept me on the edge of my seat multiple times. Be prepared for twists that will keep you guessing.

I really enjoyed reading about Khorrek & Thea in this story and seeing how everything came together in this final book in the series. This book was longer than my usual books but was a really interesting story with great world building and complex characters. The epilogue at the end set three months later did a good job of showing how Khorrek & Thea were adapting to their new lives together as well as how some of the other characters were doing.

Steam Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

4.8⭐️ Finding your Fated Mate changes everything

If you like steamy monster romances with intrigue, heart, a possessive male head over heels with a nerdy girl and an exciting storyline with a HEA, then this is a story for you! I loved the main characters and how they grew throughout the story. They overcame obstacles, defeated an evil ruler and fell in love during the process. It was very steamy, but had a great storyline, too. I truly enjoyed it!.

What an epic adventure!
I love this story with Thea, a linguist, and Khorrek, an orc who is The High King’s right hand enforcer. There is so much wrong that must be set right. It’s a fascinating story, with well-conceived characters, thrilling adventures, and a super sweet romance, but it had me chewing my nails anxiously at times. The culmination of the story is incredible, and thoroughly satisfying. I love it!

Spicy, male female, 3rd person dual point of view, paranormal romance. I loved this book! A fantastic conclusion to this series (but I'd love more stories from this world). Both lead characters were well developed, and watching their relationship progress was very engaging. The action, story-telling, romance, and spice were top notch. I definitely recommend this book/series!

I love how Khorrek supports Thea's brilliance as well as her beauty and she values all of him as well. There are many twists and fascinating details that pull the reader through both this story and the series arc. I've enjoyed reading this out of order but now am determined to binge the full series! Wonderful secondary characters that add great flavor.
