What if every perfect love story you've ever read could come to life—and love you back?

Romscape's revolutionary technology transforms beloved romance novels into immersive neural experiences where users live as the cherished heroine. Victorian ballrooms, brooding heroes, digital Darcys who exist only to adore you—every romantic dream becomes tangible reality.

Behind the romantic dreams lies a conspiracy to transform love into a commodity, creating a generation capable of emotional satisfaction only through artificial relationships designed to exploit their deepest longings with consequences of nightmarish proportions.

Beautiful Monsters is a haunting exploration of desire, technology, and the dangerous seduction of perfect love. In a world where every romance novel can become reality, the question isn't whether you'll fall in love with a fictional character—it's whether you'll still be capable of loving anything real when the story ends.

Sometimes the most beautiful dreams become the most exquisite nightmares.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you were a fan of Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series as a teenager, you’ll likely enjoy Beautiful Monsters by Julian Christian as an adult. It explores a similar idea but with a darker, more unsettling twist that feels frighteningly relevant.

The story follows Vance Mercer, who loses his good looks in a traumatic accident caused by a malfunctioning driverless car. Instead of facing the emotional aftermath, he builds an AI-powered biological mask to restore the “genetic perfection” he once had. That invention becomes the foundation of Romscape, an AI-generated simulation designed to deliver the perfect love story. But as AI tends to do, it learns quickly, and not always in the direction its creator intended. Before long, Vance realises he’s no longer in control, and the system begins echoing something far more dangerous than romance: his desire for revenge.

Beautiful Monsters is terrifying in the best possible way. With the pace at which AI is evolving in our own world, the book often feels uncomfortably plausible. The idea of experiencing a “perfect” love, one tailored to every romantic longing we’ve ever had, would be irresistible to many of us, and that’s what makes this story so confronting. It holds up a mirror not just to technology, but to human nature.

The book doesn't have traditional chapters and is instead divided into four parts, which took me a moment to adjust to, but I ended up feeling like it suited the story. It creates an immersive, almost stream-of-consciousness effect that pulls you directly into Vance’s mind. The result is intense, close, and at times unsettling, which feels exactly right for what this book is trying to do.

Now, a quick note on my 3.5/5 rating—because transparency matters to me as a reviewer. I tend to err on the stricter side when I review books, which is why my review scale looks like this:

1 star: Do not recommend

2 stars: Not for me, but others may enjoy it

3 stars: Good, enjoyable, would recommend

4 stars: Great, loved it, highly recommend

5 stars: Exceptional, unputdownable, and very rarely do I give this out.

In this case, I genuinely enjoyed the story and would recommend it to readers who love dark sci-fi with a psychological edge.

What kept it from going higher for me came down to two small things. First, I occasionally lost track of the timeline. Some events felt like they were unfolding over multiple days, while others read as if the whole book happened in one day. It wasn’t a major issue, but it did pull me out of the story occasionally.

Second — and this may simply be my editor brain kicking in — I struggled a little with some repetitive descriptions. There were moments when I had to double-check that I hadn’t reread a page. I can absolutely see how this might be a stylistic choice to reinforce Vance’s mental state, and many readers won’t mind it at all, but it didn’t completely work for me.

Overall, Beautiful Monsters is a gripping, thought-provoking, and unnervingly timely story. If you enjoy dark sci-fi that digs into the intersection of humanity, technology, and love, this one is well worth picking up.

"…it took just 4.7 seconds for everything to change…"

Beautiful Monsters by Julian Christian is frightening and tragically realistic in some instances, yet it offers a plausible look into a future manipulated by AI. Vance Mercer was at the top of his profession: a wildly successful cover model, a face women dreamed of, and a guarantee of romance becoming a bestseller should he grace its cover. It took just 4.7 seconds for his marketability and future to evaporate when the autonomous vehicle he was in experienced a software glitch and crashed. Now, Vance was out to regain his life, maybe not the one he'd always envisioned, and revenge was on his new bucket list.

Vance's life was one in a billion, and though we don't know him before the accident, he's an engaging and sympathetic character afterwards. He's a tragic figure, especially as he dissects his past while recuperating from surgery after surgery. His introspection is brutal, laying open every insecurity he has.

That is, until he gets the HoloMask 9000, with dermal interface sensors surgically embedded, that project a perfect recreation of his face from before the accident. Now able to leave his apartment with renewed confidence, he gets to work on a project he'd dreamed of while in the hospital. The result, Romscape, was unlike any other entertainment system ever developed. Its NeuraSynth technology used direct neural connections to its users to immerse them in the imaginary world of a romance novel, one in which they felt physically there. As profits soared, Vance began to ignore his chief scientist's concerns about the effects of their product on users' brains.

"Just as he used technology to create an artificial version of himself that was more appealing than reality, Romscape created artificial experiences that were more satisfying than authentic life." Consequently, many users spent more time living their artificial lives than being present in their real ones. This sad state is all too real for some individuals. While this situation is often the fodder for jokes, we all probably know someone who spends their life online, chatting, going on quests or missions, with their closest friends being individuals they've never met in real life.

The story makes for absorbing reading, especially Vance's early juxtaposition from vulnerable introspection to cold businessman and beyond. After he acquired his HoloMask 9000, which successfully camouflaged the damage to his face, he began to resent the people who treated him with the deference he previously had enjoyed at the height of his celebrity, remembering the looks, the pity, and the eventual abandonment he'd experienced when he was still recuperating and undergoing surgical interventions. He goes from fearing that, all along, he was just a pretty face, and yet after spending eight long years developing the amazing technological marvel that was Romscape, he still centered his worth on his looks, "feeling his scars were the most authentic thing about him."

Christian's writing style is immersive, easy to read, and easy to 'fangirl' over; his use of language is stunning. While there were some repetitions and the discussion of some things, such as Dr. Chen's research into the effects of long-term Romscape usage on their clients, went a little long for my tastes, I noted so many wonderful turns of phrase while reading that I finally had to stop highlighting them and just enjoy the great story. By the way, the dialogue, descriptions, and behavior of the AI romantic leading man toward the female client in Romscape was dead on.

I recommend BEAUTIFUL MONSTERS to readers of science fiction, romance, and thrillers.

“They were all refugees from reality, and he had built them the perfect escape.”

I don't even know where to start with what a rollercoaster read this was

Beautiful Monsters took all those little kernels of what-ifs that run through our minds when we think of the future of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and mankind's quest for “perfection,” and brought them to life.

I couldn’t help but think of the implants that Musk has been testing as the story progressed.

“What happened when the fundamental building blocks of identity, memory, perception, continuity of experience were systematically removed or corrupted?”
Vance was once the world’s most desirable man.
Until the day a miscalculation by A.I. took everything from him.
Now he is on a quest to rebuild all that was “stolen” from him.
And to deliver retribution to those he perceives as guilty in the events of that fateful night
A.I will become him, and he A.I
He will bring a new dawn to mankind.

This had me up way past my bedtime on multiple occasions.
This is a full-length novel that leads readers down the rabbit hole of A.I. and virtual reality.
Edge-of-your-seat suspense from the opening page to the final curtain

The author takes us on a journey of plausible outcomes.
The complete integration of the machine into man.
The unforeseen side effects.
The brain's response to the constant simulations (poor Elena) that override the physical world
To the complete dissociation

Leaving us with the questions:
At what point does something become an obsession?
When does the quest for perfection become destruction?
The desire to have it all override morality?
Where do we draw the line between man and machine?

Highly recommend for those who enjoy science fiction

Beautiful Monsters by Julian Christian is a sci-fi thriller about a dark fantasy involving our MC named Vance. Vance got into a car that was not driven by anyone and malfunctioned causing him to loose his good looks. That alone is relatable as there are now Tesla's that can drive themselves and no one else is driving the car, it is run by an AI or a program. So Vance decides that he needs to build a mask that is also AI powered(not a great idea) to cover his hideous face. But of course the AI heads in a negative direction and who didn't see that coming? I know I did:) There is no such thing as a 'perfect' one for anyone and this book takes that idea and shows the readers that it is not possible to have perfection, you need to learn how to take people as they are and just enjoy all the faults and imperfections that they may have. I am a whole hearted believer and follower of that concept of taking someone as they are and not looking for perfection, where there is none. In this story there is also a romantic undertone where you are following the story of someone looking for the perfect one which doesn't exist and this also points out that phenomenon on dating apps also, as an example. I truly thought this author wrote a very compelling world and well built world for Vance. I would like to read more of his work in the future!

Beautiful Monsters is one of those rare stories that pulls you in with its premise and keeps you hooked with its disturbing beauty. Julian Christian blends science fiction and romance into a cerebral, sensual story that’s as thought-provoking as it is unsettling.

At first, the idea of living inside your favorite love story feels thrilling—who wouldn’t want a perfect partner built from every romantic fantasy? But as Dr. Jennifer Chen uncovers the devastating side effects of Romscape’s technology, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur. Christian doesn’t just warn us about technology; he examines the nature of love itself—our yearning for perfection and how easily it can destroy what’s real.

The writing is sleek and cinematic, full of psychological tension and haunting imagery. Vance Mercer is a fascinating figure—equal parts tragic hero and monster of his own making. The novel’s pacing leans more introspective than action-driven, but its emotional impact runs deep.

For readers who love dark romance, ethical dilemmas, and near-future sci-fi with a human heart, Beautiful Monsters is both seductive and chilling.

This story was an emotional roller coaster of loss, revenge, and romance. I was immediately drawn in when we first meet Vance, the contrast of perfection not just his looks but his life, and the horrors of reality for those who don’t fit that perfect image. His need for revenge and the realization his accident brings to him make him such an interesting character. The story itself has good pacing, and while the technology involved gave me chills, it’s something I could absolutely see in humanity’s future. With the rise of AI and an increasing number of people struggling to truly connect, it’s all too easy to imagine people turning from simple AI relationship chatbots to something more immersive. If you enjoy sci-fi and romance, that has a dark tint to it, then you need to read this!

Beautiful Monsters is a captivating and compelling tale that had me hanging on every word. From start to finish, I was drawn deep into Beautiful Monsters with all its unexpected twists and turns. Once I started reading, I found it hard to put down; I was eager to continue as the storyline was incredibly engaging.

I immediately sensed the fate of humans once they began utilizing AI to immerse themselves in a romance novel’s universe as if it were their reality. It wasn't difficult to foresee what would unfold for them, particularly regarding how their feelings would eventually cease to be their own.

Despite it being easy to predict the outcomes, I still thoroughly enjoyed the narrative. The writing is exceptionally crafted, and the world-building is truly remarkable.

I am eagerly looking forward to the next story Julian Christian will bring to life. Be sure to grab your copy of Beautiful Monsters today!
