Last Chance is the highly anticipated sequel to the bestselling novel Last Stand.
Gideon Johann is the new sheriff of Last Stand, Colorado, hoping to put roots down in the place where he grew up. Set free from the years of running from his conscience, he still has trouble accepting that the past has forever unchained him as he navigates his romance with Abby and fatherhood with Joann while coping with a mysterious man intent on exacting revenge for Gideon’s past deeds and carrying out the responsibilities that come with the job of sheriff.
Mary, the hard-luck whore, finds her status in life changed, but not the misfortune that seems to follow her like a shadow.
Gideon and Mary both try to escape their pasts and start new lives, but find it easier said than done as forces work to derail their paths to happiness.
Last Chance can be read as a stand-alone novel, but will provide a richer reading experience if Last Stand is read first.
Duane Boehm grew up on a farm outside of Petersburg, Illinois. All the time spent driving a tractor gave him plenty of opportunity to let his imagination run wild and not tear up too much equipment. The two passions he developed early in life were the love of playing guitar and reading books.
He eventually moved to a mini-farm outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife and replaced planting corn with trees and raising dogs. For a number of years he worked as an IT consultant and continued with being a part-time musician and songwriter. He dabbled in writing short stories with the idea in the back of his mind that someday he would write a novel. One Christmas after watching "A Christmas Carol", he was inspired to begin his journey as a novelist.
These books are great. They move at a pace that makes you want to turn the page to find out what's going to happen. The good guys don't ass around about taking care of the bad guys, and the women are smart, tough, and on the team. This is one of those stories that you think about even when you aren't reading the book. There's also a couple of real dogs that have jobs in there as well.
This book has a few typos, while distracting... the story line, pace, and situations continue, it was worth my time. On to the next book in this series!
Great Western with lots of action, romance, self discovery, even a good old fashioned dual. Backdrop scenery well written, especially since those places either no longer exists or are big cities and towns.
This book was filled with lots of action and I loved it. The story line was never boring; just the opposite which kept me turning pages. Going on the next book. Get this book; you won’t be disappointed.
I enjoyed this Gideon adventure as I did the others .... light reading with a good story line. Looking forward to catching up with more by this author.
The reason for my low rating is that there is a scene that explicitly describes the sexual mutilation of a woman. This is not something I want to read in escapist literature.
Western series that has a good cast of characters. It's got humor, lots of action, shootings and romance. The errors and some of the incorrect phrases for the time are annoying and kind of took away from the story. I've done extensive research on this time period and divorce was virtually unheard of. The youngest daughter wouldn't have been allowed to behave how she did, either. I know it's a stand alone, but there are way too many references to what happened in book one so I would highly recommend reading it first.
An excellent follow up to the book "Last Stand". The characters continued to grow without conflict and the action in the story continued as well. The bad guys were bad and the good guys true and the women were fine even the whores. Left a little opening for a future book by not explaining the man from Gideon's past that wanted to hurt him. I'll look forward to reading it.
I chose this rating, because this story kept me interested all the way from the first page until the last page. I would like to read more books from this writer. He has a great way of keeping you involved and thinking about what is going to happen next. Just a great story.
I love reading westerns and this is the first of Duane Boehm's books I have read. It is a good story and one that I enjoyed reading. I'm also looking forward to reading the second installment of his Gideon series. It's obviously self published with many common mis-spellings and other mistakes an editor would have caught but they are easy to forgive.
Wow, I Sure did enjoy reading this book. Had I not read the first book ( Last Stand ), I would have missed out on so much more. I love the happy ending that Gideon and the new members of his family got.
I have read both of your books. I enjoyed. Both of them. But you will have to finish the story. Did Zack and Johann get together? I enjoy westerners very much. You are a great story teller.
The author has done an excellent job in the two books of his that I have read. The characters are fascinating and interesting to follow. The plot is solid. It keeps me moving on through the pages. A very fine reading experience.
This has been a fun storyline with a little bit of something for everyone that loves to read Westerns. Family, love, dogs and God. A fun read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Westerns.
