The Driftcap Inn

Rate this book
Howl’s Moving Castle meets Legends & Lattes in this cozy fantasy set on a magical inn in the sky.

At a cozy inn among the clouds, love finally drifts close for a lonely innkeeper, but danger drifts closer.

In all of Itharos no inn is more enchanting—or peculiar—than The Driftcap Inn, a cozy haven in the sky carved from a giant floating mushroom. Its owner, Eino the Wanderer, enjoys a life of breathtaking views and freedom from the petty wars and political intrigue of the kingdoms below. But a home set adrift in the vast, empty skies can also be unbearably lonely.

When a handsome and enigmatic apothecary named Joren comes aboard, an unexpected companionship blossoms between the two men, stirring the possibility of something deeper. But their peaceful journey through the clouds is shattered when a string of unsettling events threatens to send Eino’s home plummeting to the ground.

Something wicked is spreading its roots across The Driftcap Inn, and Eino suspects there’s much more to it than just bad luck. With dark secrets surrounding every guest and danger creeping ever closer, Eino must decide who he can trust with his life — and with his heart.

This was a fun, mostly low-stakes but adventurous story of an unusual inn, its eccentric innkeeper (the MC), motherly housekeeper and secretive guests. The world was fun, and the setting of an oversized mushroom meandering across the sky gave a whimsical air to the entire tale. The plot builds as secrets are revealed and each development requires action, compromise and sacrifice. Losing the inn he has enjoyed freedom in, for the safety of him guests all of whom he has come to care for in different ways, the MC is left to an uncertain but hopeful future, his new love by his side.

From the beginning this was a cosy story, travelling from city to city, visiting festivals and shops, different communities and cultures the MC revels in his slow, free, life, bringing new curious guests to the inn, foraging mushrooms on its surface and caring for guests and companions. He seeks love but has yet to find anyone interested in joining him in the air. In the skies his oldest guest, a housekeeper of sorts, a mother who has flown her nest following her children's departure, ensures a constant menu of mushroom based meals, motherly affection and rhythm. Her decision to leave when they pass by her hometown, her son returning and giving her a reason to settle once more, is as devastating as it is sweet. A new handsome but shy, quiet and secretive guest invokes great interest, his experiments will eventually lead to disaster, but his truth and slow opening up will bring hope and love. A forceful woman and her daughter, well educated, clearly on the run bring further troublesome secrets but care, hope, perseverance and reasoning. A famed soldier tired of the action and an apprentice overcome by his need to be great, even if that isn't what he wants, join the crew bringing experience and wariness on one side, inexperience and brashness. The group face dangers, problems and loss together.

An enjoyable read, sweet and cosy but action-packed and thought-provoking too.

The story of Eino that owns a giant floating mushroom, that lives a life fulls of adventures and always around with suprise guests. But his life in the skys also can be lonely, because he does not have anyone to share that life. When Joren appers, an mysterious and enigmatic apothecary, Eino stars hoping more for his life.
I did enjoy the cozy feeling that this book have, the comfort of the friendships and the characters help Eino to save his home. Leonora, Val and Faulko were some of my favorites.

The Driftcap Inn leaves me conflicted. I expected something super cozy and whimsical and while it was whimsical (an inn made of floating oversized mushrooms!) it wasn't really cozy. Maybe the second book will be?

The MC was also… not great. We're introduced with him inviting someone he'd just met to abandon their life and travel with him, and he's then heartbroken when they understandably say no. Apparently he's made this same request to randoms before and is always heartbroken. The MC then almost immediately becomes obsessed with one of his guests and (in my opinion) acts almost predatory. Especially when later there's a large power imbalance between the two, it just comes across as creepy. Later in the story he also becomes black out drunk in front of all his guests, including two children. It just screams selfish and inappropriate.

First of all, thank you to BookSirens and Kate Valent for giving me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I quite enjoyed this book.. after I stopped disliking the characters?
Almost DNFd a few times, but so worth pushing past the 60% mark for me.
Devoured the book from that point onwards.

I think this one is a 3.5 star read for me, based on a few things:
1. Certain characters just rub me the wrong way, and if you dislike the MC of any book you probably wont be in for a good time - In this case, I found him clingy, codependent and melancholy, but also a bit cocky/arrogant? He just had a weird combination of personality traits that didn't do it for me.
2. The characters interactions -
One of the things I love about queer literature is the high emphasis on consent and respect. I feel like the MMC in this story was overly pushy in his interest towards one of the guests staying at the inn - A very shy and reclusive man. That alone felt a bit uncomfortable.
There were a number of characters/guests introduced at the same time, which really changed the pacing of the plot and left me scrambling to learn about each one.
3. This story has been marketed as a 'cosy' novel -
Do I think it is cosy? I think it COULD have been, if the stakes in the second half of the book were not so high. That said, if it had maintained the pacing of the first half of the book, I wouldn't have finished reading it. So I'm actually very pleased the stakes were higher and the story veered right off the cosy path. I do think people aiming for a cosy read along the lines of Legends & Lattes (since thats the advertised comparison) may not feel like they're reading the same genre.
4. The 'adventure fantasy' story that I read in the second half of the book just didn't match the first half. I loved the second half, because there was less of a focus on characters personalities. It was just unfortunate that I didn't find half of the characters likeable enough to enjoy what was happening earlier on.

My favourite things about this book, without giving anything away:
* A floating inn made of mushrooms - Who wouldn't want to be a guest among the clouds?!
* Cute animal friends
* Interesting food descriptions
* Plants behaving badly
* Great suspense/tension in the peak of the story (not very cosy, though)
* A satisfying ending

I look forward to reading more from Kate Valent, and I do wonder whether she will write another story in the same world - I would definitely like to check into Itharos again.

Kate Valent’s The Driftcap Inn is a delightful escape into a world of magic, companionship, and quiet peril. Imagine the charm of Howl’s Moving Castle blended with the cozy heart of Legends & Lattes, and then lift it all into the skies aboard a floating mushroom-turned-inn. Valent delivers a story that feels both whimsical and deeply human, a balance of comfort and intrigue.

At the center of this tale is Eino the Wanderer, owner of the Driftcap Inn. His home in the clouds offers respite from the chaos of the kingdoms below, yet his freedom is edged with loneliness. Valent captures that ache beautifully—the inn may be enchanting, but it is also isolated, and Eino’s quiet yearning for connection gives the novel its emotional weight.

That yearning finds an answer in Joren, the enigmatic apothecary, whose arrival sparks companionship and the possibility of romance. Their slow-blooming bond is one of the novel’s highlights, offering tender moments of vulnerability, witty exchanges, and a steady warmth that contrasts the looming danger. Fans of cozy queer fantasy will especially love the gentle intimacy threaded throughout their growing relationship.

But comfort is not the only flavor here. The Driftcap Inn itself becomes the stage for a creeping mystery, as strange happenings threaten its stability and whisper of darker forces taking root. The inn’s peculiar guests add layers of suspicion and intrigue, keeping readers guessing about motives and secrets. Valent’s prose balances the soft glow of cozy domesticity with a thread of unease, making for an experience that is both comforting and page-turning.

If the novel has a weakness, it lies in the stakes sometimes feeling uneven—the shift from lighthearted, slice-of-life charm to darker peril can feel a little abrupt. Still, this ebb and flow mirrors the dual nature of the story: a cozy fantasy that acknowledges comfort is often won only after weathering storms.

This book was so cute and soft 🌬️💛 — a whimsical blend of Howl’s Moving Castle charm and Legends & Lattes coziness, all drifting across a sky brimming with magic ☁️✨.

In all of Itharos, no inn was more enchanting than Eino’s Driftcap Inn 🍄🏡 — a giant floating mushroom, carved into a warm haven and carried by shimmering aura streams 💫. The sky was alive with wonder: ships sailed the clouds ⛵☁️, fruity seeds drifted through the air 🍒, and ripe mushrooms floated away like balloons 🎈. And in the middle of it all, Eino wandered, sharing tea 🫖, stories 📖, and sunsets 🌅 with travelers from every corner of the world.

Then came Joren, a quiet and enigmatic apothecary 🌿🩹 — wounded in more ways than one. Their companionship blossomed slowly 🌸… unhurried talks by candlelight 🕯️, lingering glances 💕, and shared silences that felt like home. But the clouds weren’t always kind. Strange events began to shadow the inn: the aura core that kept them afloat faltered ⚡, guests harbored secrets 🕵️, and something dark started to root itself deep within the Driftcap 🍂.

The worldbuilding? Utterly magical ✨ — and the pacing was like sipping warm tea on a rainy day 🌧️🫖. This wasn’t a story of loud battles or breakneck twists, but of living in the details: brewing herbs 🌿, mending wounds 🩹, and cherishing fleeting moments of connection ❤️‍🩹. The mystery wove itself quietly through the pages, keeping me curious while still letting me breathe in the cozy atmosphere.

Perfect for fans of:
🍄 Cozy fantasy
☁️ Found family on the road (or in the sky)
🫖 Tea and gentle magic
🛳️ A home that travels
❤️ Slow-burn romance
🕵️ Secrets & a dash of mystery

Thank you to Kate Valent and BookSirens for the ARC opportunity 💛.

A fantastic cozy enchanting read! Eino the wanderer is a kind hearted soul that spends his days up keeping his floating mushroom inn that is powered by his aura. Eino seems to have it all. A carefree life floating atop some of the most amazing views! However, Eino can’t help but feel like he is missing something because living in a floating inn can be lonely. That is until he starts paying more attention to his peculiar and anxious resident Joren. But Joren, just like the other Driftcap Inn residents is expected to come and go because that is what temporary guests do. Can Eino find a way to get Joren to stay? Is Joren even a safe person? Also, strange things start happening with Eino’s Inn. I absolutely loved the low stress adventure I was on. You get to follow Eino, and read about him as he tries to solve the mystery of the strange things happing with the Driftcap Inn. At the same time you get to read how Eino tries to find meaningful companionship. This story felt enchanting and cozy with the absolute perfect mix of mushroom and cottage core vibes. This was a top tear, cozy low stress read for me!

I did stop reading at the 27% mark (approx. 100 pages). I desperately wanted to like this book, but there was a lot that I struggled with.

What drew me in? = The cover. I LOVE the vibes, I LOVE the idea of the world, and I love that it was promised as MM.

What took me out if the story? = The tone changed quickly. We started out all whimsy, and fantastical, then suddenly the MMC is talking like a cowboy for a chapter (there were “Howdys” used, and while I get it, it felt very out of place). At the 20% mark, I felt there was still a lot of world building being dumped in, but not a lot of the characters journey. I figure at 20% we should be heading out of the world building and into the main story line.

Spice? = I did not get far enough in for the spice.

Would I re-read, or try to go back and finish? = Unsure. Maybe some of the things bothering me are just a matter of me not being in the right headspace for this type of fantasy. Or it could be that I am not used to this author’s style.

I did receive an ARC of this book through Book Sirens, but all opinions are my own.

I was intrigued by the premise of The Driftcap Inn by Kate Valent - a mushroom large enough to be turned into a floating inn for people. The innkeeper, Eino the Wanderer, picks up an odd collection of passengers, most of whom have set destinations in place, even if they take a round about route to get there. The mushroom and its attendant smaller mushrooms for guest accommodations follow the fantasy equivalent of the jet stream, which allows the voyagers to appreciate new scenery and foreign towns. While physically journeying, virtually everyone in the book also undergoes some psychological growth and development. This is to be expected in the younger passengers, but it holds true for most of the adults too, regardless of age. The ending of the book moved in unexpected ways, some of which were quite exciting, especially in contrast to the calm days at the start of the voyage. The book very neatly ties up all the plot lines in the story so much so I had forgotten this is but the first in a series, The Innkeepers of Itharos. The Driftcap Inn is a whimsical, sky-bound adventure that combines a cozy fantasy with emotional depth. Set in a floating mushroom-turned-inn, the story follows Eino, whose peaceful solitude is upended by the arrival of Joren, a mysterious apothecary with secrets of his own. Their companionship adds a tender layer to the narrative, while the inn itself feels like a character in its own right.

The book shines thanks to its atmosphere: think Legends & Lattes meets Howl’s Moving Castle, two of my all time favourites, with a dash of eerie intrigue. The supporting cast bring warmth and texture, and the themes of trust, belonging, and chosen family are gently woven throughout.

Why not five stars? The pacing occasionally drifts(pun intended), and some plot threads feel more decorative than essential. But overall, it’s a fantastic read for anyone craving comfort with a touch of magic and melancholy.

Perfect for fans of cloud-sailing inns, slow-burn queer romance, and fantasy that feels like a warm mug of tea on a rainy day.

I absolutely loved Kate Valent’s new book!

The world she created here was rich and intriguing. I enjoyed all of the characters, but I especially loved the mysterious Val. One of my favorite parts was discovering each character’s past, where they came from and where they were headed.

I found the beginning a bit slow. I wish we had gotten to know the characters sooner. The introduction also felt a little odd to me. I had a hard time understanding the main character’s reasoning; how could someone agree to leave everything behind and live at an inn with a person they had just met? Because of this, I struggled to feel empathy toward him at first. The way the author portrayed the MC’s loneliness and desire to share his life with someone felt a bit strange to me.

However, if the first part was a bit slow, the second half made up for it! It was packed with twists and turns, one obstacle after another. No time to rest! It was so intense and exciting!!

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

Let’s visit the Driftcap Inn, a giant mushroom floating across the sky.

Eino, the proprietor of the Driftcap Inn, loves his wandering life. When asked why he just floats around, he replies “It ain’t about where you’re going. It’s about how you get there. And believe me, there’s no better way to get where you’re going.” His mushroom powered by the Aura all around him. Basically, magic that can be pulled from the air. Some people have a lot of Aura, Eino, not so much. Joren is one of his guests, a mysterious man who Eino would like to know a whole lot better.

Half of the book was about getting to know Eino and his guests. Seemed everyone had secrets. Kind of slow (not boring), the mushroom floating through the sky was relaxing, until it wasn’t.

The second half was a totally different experience. Lots of action, peril, bit of sadness, great monsters, and all sorts of derring-do. Kind of read like and old fashioned movie serial.

I liked the story. Imaginative and visual. I would definitely read other stories about this Magic Mushroom.

I received an arc of this book.

The story gives you exactly what it says it will: a cozy fantasy set on a floating Driftcap. I read it in one sitting, partly to figure out what was going on with Joren (and because Eino is lovely of course). The characters were one of the best parts! They clashed in ways that felt real, while still having the found-family vibe that I enjoy. I do wish there had been more focus on Eino and Joren's developing companionship. That had a lot of potential. Blue was my favorite though, so any time spent on her was a win for me!

The tone and setting were whimsical, sometimes it felt like I was drifting right along with them. At times it felt like the plot branched into so many different routes and problems that I got a bit lost, but honestly? That kind of fit for the story since it literally takes place on a floating mushroom. In the end, everything tied together nicely.

If there's a second book for the Innkeepers of Itharos, it's definitely going on my TBR.

Spice Level: 🌶️ (Low spice – gentle romance and vibes first)

This book was like a soft exhale. The Driftcap Inn is pure cottagecore fantasy goodness, filled with gentle magic, warm moments, and the kind of characters you just want to curl up next to by the fire.

Set in a sleepy little village with just enough mystery to keep things interesting, the story follows a sweet, plant-magic-using innkeeper and a quiet, wounded stranger who stumbles into her world. It's slow, tender, and quietly emotional in the best way. The kind of book that doesn’t rush, but lets you live in the details, the tea brewing, the herb gathering, the silent glances that say everything.

There’s not a lot of high drama, and the spice is minimal, but that honestly felt perfect for this kind of story. If you're in the mood for a comforting, whimsical read with a little romance and a lot of heart, The Driftcap Inn is a gem.

The Driftcap Inn is the first volume of a very promising story. This follows the story of Eino the innkeeper of a very unique inn: an inn carved into a giant flying mushroom. As we read, we understand that this magical inn has become the haven of other unique characters with really interesting backgrounds who are in need of a place to welcome them.

This was not the first time that I had read a book from this author, so I was confident that the writing would be beautiful. It did not disappoint. The world building was great, I loved discovering how the different magics worked and about the relationships between the different countries and civilisations.

While this is the first volume of the series, the story explored has an ending. It did not end in a cliffhanger, which makes me curious about what volume 2 will be all about.

I totally recommend this book to fantasy lovers.

This book was sooooo cozy! Just look at the cover - a floating mushroom inn!!! GTFO!!! SO COZY!!!! Other amazingly cozy parts of this book: adorable animal sidekicks, amazing descriptions of food, found family, adventurous travels across fantasy lands, rowdy pubs, MAGIC!!! A badass bisexual MC with a heart of gold!

The worldbuilding was *chef’s kiss* … there might have been a bit too much worldbuilding? Lots of references to people and places and deities and myths, so it was sometimes hard to keep track. Honestly sometimes the backstories made the plot drag a bit. The ending was almost not cozy, until Eino survives the brink of death and rebuilds the driftcap inn even bigger and better.

As someone who loves queer cozy fantasies, this book definitely delivers. It’s hard to find a good story that is cozy but also has high stakes. Many thanks to the author and publisher for the opportunity to have read an advanced copy this book for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is cozy and brimming with pure cottagecore vibes—gentle magic, quiet warmth, and characters you can’t help but fall in love with.

The Driftcap Inn follows an adventurous, mushroom-loving innkeeper and a mysterious young apothecary who’s clearly hiding something important. The story unfolds slowly and tenderly, with a quiet emotional depth. There’s no sweeping romance here; instead, it’s subtle and unhurried. Affection is woven into the small moments—brewing tea, gathering herbs, shared silences that say more than words ever could.

There’s little high-stakes drama, and the spice is minimal, but it fits the tone of the story perfectly.
The world-building is thoughtful and well-paced. Readers are given just enough to understand the setting and stakes, while still leaving room for exploration in future books.

ARC edition -
Amazing world building! There are oceans, but the sky is where the ships are sailing. It is also where the aura streams flow - currents of energy that support life on the world. Trees release fruity seeds that swim through the air. Mushrooms pull free from the ground and float through the air when they ripen. And if you can get the driftcap mushrooms to grow big enough, then you can hollow them out and make a floating inn!
Eino has such an inn and he spends his life floating along the aura streams. Protected and stabilized by an core of aura power, the inn and it's guests travel the world at a pace that allows them to see the beauty of the world. No matter how wonderful a world is though there is always a dark side and it may have caught up with the Eino and the inn's core.

While I enjoyed some aspects of this book, it ended up missing the mark for me in the end. I really enjoyed Eino and his carefree and positive nature. I loved the idea of the floating inn traveling place to place, inviting new adventures for characters to experience. However, I had a hard time wanting to keep reading. I think one of the things that put me off the most were all the names/people/places that were really hard for me to pronounce. It slowed me down quite a bit. Hopefully a bit of a helpful suggestion for future works: a pronunciation guide included. I think it would really help and make the reading experience more enjoyable. *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. *

To be honest, I almost stopped reading after the first page but decided to give it a go. By the time the other guest started to show up at the inn, I really enjoyed the story. Eino might be a bit annoying at times, but his interactions with the others and the relationships that develop make the story worthwhile.

I love the concept of an inn that is a giant mushroom floating around the country. The drama was a nice way to get everyone together and keep the story interesting. By the time we got to the epilogue, I knew I wanted to hear more about their adventures. I hope there are more books in this series.

This was a fun cozy fantasy that transitioned into a higher stakes adventure later on in the book! I appreciated the world building and the lovely descriptions of the Driftcap Inn did not disappoint. I liked the characters, but can see how some might not be everyone's favorite. I enjoyed the way they interacted and it seemed pretty believable and (mostly) nice. A character did leave at one point in the book and I expected to see them back later but we did not. Not good or bad, just unexpected.

Overall this was a great read! When I started it I didn't know it was going to be a series, but I'd love to pick back up reading in the world when it continues.

This was such a fun read! It's cozy, but with mystery and action.

This was an ARC read feom Booksirens and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

I truly enjoyed reading this book and I thought it was a nice palate cleanser after a heavy read. I have to admit I didn't care much for the MC, Eino, but the world that the author built was interesting enough to keep it fun to read. I loved the other characters and how they grew and overcame things as a group. It really gave me Howl's Moving Castle vibes and it was whimsical and comforting and sweet. I’m grateful to BookSirens for providing me with a free ARC of this book to honestly review, because I absolutely loved it. From the setting, with diverse cultures and floating fruits and mushrooms and all sorts of sky animals navigating aether streams, to the sizable cast of lovable (and mostly queer) characters, to the cozy-but-with-real-stakes plotline, this story almost could have been designed specifically for me. It isn’t deep literature, but was perfect for a busy time where I needed something light to read while relaxing, and I give it five stars for excellent execution of what it set out to do. I’ll be watching for a sequel.

3.5 ⭐️ I loved the world building, and the setting for this series - a floating mushroom built to be a cosy inn, LOVE 🍄

I’m not sold on the romance and would have preferred for the story to be cosier and focus more on the inn itself but this was an enjoyable story and I’ll definitely be checking out book 2!

*I got this book for free, but the opinion is my own*

This book had so much promise. I loved the idea of it. A cozy fantasy? I'm in.

Unfortunately, from the first page, I didn't find much to like about the main character.

It didn't read like much of a fantasy, however there is promise with the romance.

So if you're looking for a romance in a fantasy setting, this one might be for you.

This was such a fun and cozy read! The world building was fantastic and the whole premise of the traveling inn on aura streams was fascinating. The MC, Eino had such a strong personality and reminded me of a mix of Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow. All his choices and interactions with the other characters was interesting to experience and I felt a real connection to his emotions!
I really appreciated how this book was never slow as so many “cozy” fantasies can be.
Highly recommend! ☺️
