I’m sure I say this every time I finish a Krista Walsh book… but this may be my favorite yet. I’m here for… and 100% supporting her romantasy journey because it is already going AMAZING! I instantly fell in love with Kalla, our FMC vampire who is on the search for the elusive “more” in her life… and Jael, our MMC fae who has had years of living in the dark and is on a mission that he *thinks* will help him back into the light. When Kalla is sent off to think and look for the elusive “more” she is always in search of… she comes across a battered and nearly dead Jael - but she is drawn and pulled to him in a way she doesn’t understand. Breaking all rules… she takes Jael to a hiding spot and helps him to heal… all the meanwhile telling herself she will use him for information and kill Jin afterwards. Can she stick to this plan? Can she resist the pull she feels to Jael?
A Dream Shrouded in Fury is a novel of action, discovery, love, connection and so much more. I was really surprised and impressed at the emotions I felt throughout and look forward to more books within this world!

Two different worlds and species collide in this romantic novella which was a fairly quick read. Kalla of the Gloaming Fury vampires was frustrated with the dreary pattern of their every day life, shrouded in secrecy away from the rest of the other beings. Sending her to go clear her head, she stumbles onto the badly wounded fae, Jael, after their failed attack on the princess of Soldara . Knowing that she should kill him, she decided to try and heal him. A slow burn as both had baggage of their own. His rage fueled by hatred and revenge has to be overcome and by nature fae and vampires aren't fond of another. A traitor in his midst had to be reckoned with. A bonus epilogue at the end of the book rounded the standalone off.

An absolutely stunning romantasy debut from the awesome Krista Walsh! If you love your romantasies brimming with adventure, angst and yearning A Dream Shrouded in Fury will not disappoint! Jael and Kalla just had me breathless. Their pain, their loyalty, and the choices they made left echoes long after I turned the final page. It was glorious and I can't recommend it enough. Add it to your TBRs now so you can enjoy it on release day.

Oh, these two... These two made my heart weep, and they made it sing. They tugged at my soul's strings, drawing out the most hauntingly beautiful melody.
A melody of longing. Longing for freedom, for life, for love.

A melody of hope. Timid, yet powerful all the same.

While romantasy isn’t really one of my favorite genres, this author is a favorite, so I’ll follow where she goes. This is a fun romance between Jael and Kalla; he’s a fae and she’s a vampire and never the twain shall meet. LOL! There isn’t a lot of suspense in this, but it definitely is filled with romance, a little bit of tension, and very interesting characters. As always with this author, this book is filled with great writing, engaging characters, and a beautiful romance. Fans of this author, PNR, and/or romantasy will definitely like this standalone. Recommend.

A Dream Shrouded in Fury is a romantic novella with 2 POV and written in 1st-person present tense. It’s a complete, standalone story, but gives good hints about this world and its inhabitants.
As it’s a novella and not a full novel, there was enough world-building to fit the story. We meet Kalla, the vampire from the Gloaming Fury and Jael, the fae, part of the Coynfare resistance.
I liked the concepts of the vampires in this book. They had the usual cold skin, blood drinking and avoiding daylight, but they had families and parents and breathed. So instead of being the more common undead, they were living beings. There are enough hints in the book to give rise to wanting to learn more about why the vampires are exiled and what happened to Kalla’s parents.
The story starts quickly and has good pacing. It moves between the two different main characters, and you get a good sense of their motivations and inner conflicts.
When they finally meet, the pacing slows down somewhat, but it works enough as it fits with the scenes where Kalla is tending to a badly injured Jael. This gives the characters time to grow and develop.
The chemistry between the two characters works for the story. After Jael is looked after, the pacing does stay pretty slow for longer with not much happening, and this does make the end feel a little rushed.
Overall, this was a good story with interesting characters and a strong romantic feel.

This very enjoyable story is about Kalla, a vampire, and Jael, a fae. They should be enemies. Kalla finds Jael almost dead and going against what she should do she decides to attempt to save his life. Jael almost dies in a foiled rebellion attempt against the tyrannical and cruel fae king. Kalla finds him as she is going to her hideout to try and get past her angst with her life. Her Fury, vampire family, lives under a mountain because vampires are outlawed and must hide. She is searching to find happiness and something more in her life.
So when she sees Jael she knows she has to try and save him. Over the next few days the two of them find themselves trying to make each other laugh and just keep getting closer. They find within the other what they are missing.
I will not go further so as to destroy the marvelous story. This was one of the most enjoyable stories I have read in a while. I loved the characters and their interactions.

This book feels like it has a lot of potential! I'm very intrigued by the world and the magic systems, but I feel like because this was a novella they weren't really fleshed out enough to fully make sense. I do look forward to reading the rest of this series, and I liked the characters so I'm excited to see how they add to the series.
This one definitely starts off with a bang! The first chapter had me hooked immediately, and I really had to force myself to go slow to fully appreciate the story. The pace moves incredibly fast and the story occurs over approximately two weeks, which is a biiiiit fast for my taste but it fit the characters.

unbelievable enemies to lovers romantasy, engaging characters that draw you in and make you cheer them on. Sassy FMC, lots of funny encounters, detailed fight scenes. this book will have you on the edge of your seat and you will not be able to put it down.

This is a world where vampires and fae are mortal enemies. Where folklore is the basis of their dislike for each other vs. any real knowledge. Kalla coming across a half dead Jael and deciding to save him, despite all she's been told, started her journey down a very unexpected path.
Enemies to lovers is definitely the theme here, and I am here for it. This is a lovely, sweet love story, not without conflict but certainly plenty of conviction.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kalla and Jael's story and am hoping there may be more of their adventures in the future.

I loved this story and I loved the struggle and angst between Jael and Kalla. The call of duty to each of their causes, creates a riff between the two lovers. I loved the easy banter between the characters and tension. Definitely recommend 🤩

I have loved every book this author has written, and I'm thrilled she's writing Romantasy now! This is a great story with beautiful character interactions and choices. Resentments and loyalties are challenged throughout, and I loved every minute of it! I can't wait for more stories set in Golthwaine!

This book kept me locked in since the first chapter. The politics intrigued me and Kalla and Jael made me fall in love. A vampire and a fae is such a great match. The passion was intense and my favorite chapter is #10.
I like books that make me create theories and this one did not disappoint. When I finished I stayed thinking of so many scenarios and also it kept me thinking about the future. I can’t wait for the next book and I hope the next one explores a lot more of the world and the politics.

I really liked Jael and Kalla, their story is sweet with a little spice. Kalla's friends Cliff, Ria, and Birch, and the fae Hethyr and Pimmin were fun, too. I'm glad the antagonist got what he deserved. (I disliked him so much that even immediately after finishing the book, I'm drawing a blank on his name. 🤷🏻♀️)

A DREAM SHROUDED IN FURY was a fun introduction to this new series as well as this new-to-me author. The world building is on the smaller side since it's a shorter read but there's plenty to understand the dynamics between the different magical beings and to get a taste for the large world conflicts. Both Jael and Kalla were written in distinct ways and I also liked the supporting cast of characters.
While I enjoyed the romance, the back and forth of Jael's revenge mission and his feelings about it wore on me as the book went on and that affected my overall enjoyment of the book. That being said, I definitely plan to read the first book in the series because I really enjoyed the author's writing voice.

I Loved this book! I dont typically go for standalones as I feel they just dont hit as hard because I don't have the time to connect with the characters...but this one truly shocked me! The connection i had to these characters in under 200 pages is truly astounding! Krista had me going through All the emotions and I just loved our MCs so much! Its touching, its heartbreaking, and the ending is oh so satisfying! Its a beautiful love story with a splash of steamy spice.

Oh my goodness, was this a magnificent read! Everything was magnificent! From the pacing, to the emotions, to the action, to the world of the vampire Fury! All of it spectacular! I felt it all, saw it all, tasted it all! I loved that each character has a fullness to them, easily identifiable to know who and what they are. I loved this book right from the start! This was an exquisite love story, the whole "opposites attract" take a very new meaning, one that titillated my senses, one that wrapped itself round my heart, one that got all my feelings at full alert Action, turmoil, inner wretchedness, all very clear, concise and vivid. Powerfully emotive. I loved Jael from page 1, I can see the complexity of his character, his thirst for revenge against king Leonine.
Jael, once a valued member of Leonine's trusted staff, endured years of torture by his hand. On his escape, he joins the rebels who would see the end of Leonine's rule and Jael's primary, his only focus, is to take Leonine down, any way he can. But things, as they have a tendency to do, don't always go as planned and the scheming, preparation, execution of a very concise plan goes awry, a traitor's action almost eliminated the rebels. Almost caused Jael's demise. Supposed to be enemies, an encounter between the two peoples supposed to fight to the death, yet when Kalla comes across Jael, bleeding, almost dead, she couldn't, just couldn't put an end to him. Going against all instincts to suck him dry, she saves him, heals him. I loved how she tried to rationalise her actions, quite comical in fact. Instead, the carnal desires are threatening to undo both of them, so yummy and intense, it burrows into me! Jael's words, while not directed at me, resonated with truth, this book was "a rich treat", one I was lucky to indulge in. Beautiful. Perfection". Yumminess perfection!
Kalla's already skating on thin ice with her Fury, wanting more than just being, hiding from the king and vampire hunters. She feels stifled. She wants freedom and to open her horizons but it's a dangerous world for a vampire. I feel Kalla's restlessness, her frustration. So beautifully penned, exquisitely vivid. As was what is slowly developing between Jael and Kalla. Their first encounter was OMG awesome, their emotions and thoughts jumped right into me, my poor heart did a stutter or two. Jael, ready to give up, Kalla desperate to "taste" this delicious smelling blood but neither do. Instead, her thoughts are way off what they should be "every time I imagined those beautiful eyes never opening again, the more something in my chest faught harder to keep him breathing."
I loved how naturally their romance evolved, so beautifully, so freaking hot! I loved the tenderness combined with the uncertainty coming through, it really tuggs my soul!!!! I couldn't help falling in love with both of them! Their banter is beautiful, real, teasing, neither knowing what to expect from the other except this sense of "right" that settles over them like a blanket.
Through all the suspicions of the Fury, Kalla is steadfast in her support of Jael, she believes he's true, he's honest. The Fury, naturally divided, had a few surprises for Jael, note worthy is the despicable Corban, vile person doesn't begin to cover how dreadful, sleezy and selfish he is. A few of the vamps stood out like beacons to me, like Thorn, who's an amazing Fury leader, she keeps her people safe from the outside world that would see them all vanquished. And Cliff, a really cool guy, the friendship Kalla has with Cliff is gorgeous, uncomplicated, always supportive. But now Kalla has gone against logic and brought a Fae back to her Fury. Her hidden Fury.
Oh heavens! When Kalla asks Jael why he's startled or surprised when he laughs was like a punch to my stomach, I felt it deeply! Poor guy.... the walls he's built up, reinforcing them to not feel, to be single minded in his quest, are taking a pounding from Kalla, cracks are opening, I could literally see his walls unfurling before my eyes. But the obstacles are many, not only the vamps but the few rebels that had survived. Gosh does Krista do a doozy on me! She decimates me with the raw emotions, she spikes my adrenaline to near exploding, she wraps me in her storytelling 1000%, I'm glued and trust me, I don't want to come unstuck, I want to feel it all, I want to see it all, I want to experience it all. And I do. With everything in me.
One of Krista's talents, and gosh does she have many, is her decorative wording, her ability to make me writhe, as though there were a hundred serpents churning around my gut looking for a way out, and then... she casts her spell, all the serpents still, lulled by her magic and a beautiful warmth starts building instead, heating me up, cuddling me, comforting me in it's embrace, delicious contentment descends, together with the biggest smile! As she spins me round her magnificent tale, the beauty of her words, the depth of her world, I can't help but agree with Jael, "I don't care if I ever see the sun again as long as the moon is there" So lost am I in a Krista read, every time, all I care about is, I want more "Krista", I need more "Krista" to lose myself completely once again.

In some ways I’m a very simple woman – give me a story with vampires and forbidden romance, and I’m all in. Krista Walsh clearly has the same predilections – and it made for a very satisfying read.
The novel’s two main characters – Jael and Kalla – are both very single minded in the beginning. Jael’s entire focus is on carrying out the mission of the Coynfare – a network of fae rebels seeking to take down Soldara’s tyrannical king. Kalla, meanwhile, is chafing against the constraints of her vampire fury and longing to see more of the world.
A botched attempt at an ambush on the King’s daughter leaves Jael close to death – but is also what brings him into contact with Kalla. She’s instantly drawn to him – as much due to attraction as the novelty of finding a fae in the open. “Longing spilled through me,” she recalls at one point, “a deep, unfamiliar want. Duty called for me to stay focused, slaughter the half-dead fae, and return to the fury, but instinct overrode reason.”
That warring of instinct and reason is also something Jael experiences, after awakening to Kalla nursing him back to health inside a cave – contradicting what he knows of vampires as “ravenous, soulless parasites. Doomed to eternal night, born to be beautiful and alluring to draw in their prey.” Nevertheless, the pair become unlikely friends, bonded by their shared longing for something more than what they have. As Jael says during their first moment of intimacy, “We were both scarred, both flawed, and those flaws fit together into a seamless one.”
However, the perfection of life inside the cave is no match for the march of real life outside it. With their previous leader dead, Jael is the new leader of the Coynfare. And for Kalla, her fury is always in her mind. These outside forces initially drive the pair apart, but it’s clear that their short time together has made their worldviews irrevocably shift. Jael realises there’s more to life than revenge; Kalla becomes aware of how much of the world vampires are missing by keeping themselves isolated.
This is made even clearer by the novel’s strong supporting cast. Two of Jael’s fellow rebels, Hethyr and Pimmin, also find themselves reassessing their previous views on their quest after spending time with Kalla and her vampire family. “Spending time with Ria and Birch? Cooking for them? Watching their expressions change when they discovered what real food tastes like? I’d forgotten how much I love cooking,” Hethyr reveals. “I hadn’t thought it was possible to find that kind of joy again, but it turns out I just needed to leave Soldara.” On the other hand, characters like Corban shows how different things could have been for Jael if this bloodlust had got out of control.
One of my favourite feelings when I read a book is when I know a world has more stories to tell. That’s definitely the feeling I get with what Walsh has created – even down to the relationship between Jael and Kalla. It’s a relationship that not only changes them for the better, but is the starting point of change for both their communities.
If you’re looking for a quick romantasy that’s just as lush as its longer counterparts, A Dream Shrouded in Fury delivers. I’ll definitely be picking up whatever Walsh writes in this world next.

Kalla just wants to explore the world outside of her secluded home, regardless of that world’s view on vampires. Jael wants nothing more than to punish the king that saw to the death of his soul. Together, the two may just discover that everything they’ve ever needed can be found where they never expected it.
Y’all already know I’m obsessed with this author, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that I *immediately* jumped on board for the new “Rogues of Golthwaine” series. And for it to be a spicy vampire story? Sold. Full send. Let’s go.
The characters? Amazing. This is a shorter book, but it manages to pack so much in there. Kalla and Jael are so cute together, but they retain their individuality well. Kalla is an absolute badass, and Jael gives off the most delightful ‘I’m chill until I’m not’ vibes (and when he’s not? Delicious).
The plot? Stellar. It’s fast, it’s got some really sweet moments, and it explores a lot more emotions and pieces of personal growth than you would expect in a 200(ish) pager. The storyline fits in nicely with the overarching world, managing to be completely encapsulated while leaving the door open for a much larger picture later. It weaves in seamlessly with the world-building, which (by nature of being a faster storyline) is somewhat limited. Despite those limitations, we get a full enough picture to see what’s going on and why it matters in relation to the characters. That’s a difficult thing to pull off, and it’s handled here like it’s nothing.
I am already incredibly excited to read the next installment in the Golthwaine series, “A Hunt Bound in Blood” (out later this year!), and that’s entirely due to the phenomenal impact that “Dream” has made. The romance is beautifully done, the plot is snappy and engaging, and the characters are a delight. I already know everything about this series is going to be another hit.

A Dream Shrouded In Fury does an excellent job of establishing this world and it's people and making them appealing from page 1. The presentation of the vampires was something I'd not seen before and it made for intriguing reading. While this is a complete story, there is a tantalising thread left open that I know right now will draw me back into book 1 with the mystery and potential for a 'little' bit of violence that's alluded to. The emotional range in this book is astounding, and in the absence of buses, the author has found other things to throw her characters under so we can watch as they struggle out and persevere to rebuild themselves in a new way. I love that - the growth each shows and their journey to the point of finding their authentic selves. This is a
story built on several levels - that of the individuals, their family and close friends, their community and then their nation - and as such, is a layered and pleasingly complex one that is a wonderful stepping off point for the books to follow.

Kalla, a vampire who wants more out of her life, finds Jael, a fae who wants to kill the fae king. He is seriously wounded but she decides to save him for reasons unknown to herself.
This book is about the growing relationship between two people who aren’t happy with their current lives.
There is some action, surprises, humour and this is definitely a romance story.
The characters are well written and their interactions work well. The story has background information worked in so you’re not wondering about the past. The secondary characters are good as well.
But basically, this is a romance, which is not my normal read, I like romance built into a story but not so much when it is the main theme. Others may disagree about the main focus of the story but that’s what I felt.
It was a quick, easy read that I enjoyed but not as much as the authors Hour of the Witches series.

A little spice, a little violence, and a wonderfully constructed world collide in A Dream Shroud in Fury. When Kalla - a vampire scout - finds wounded Jael - a fae rebel - while she was supposed to be reflecting on the importance of her fury (extended family) and keeping them secret, she sets off a chain of events that changes more than just their lives. Choices all have consequences, but, if you are willing to look, there’s always a chance of finding light within the dark. Sometimes it just requires a little leap and trusting fate knows more than we realize.
This is a complete story, so no cliff hanger (!!!), but, the world does have many possibilities for related stories, which I really hope Krista explores!

Kalla is a vampire living in hiding with the rest of her fury (group of vampires). Closed off from the rest of the world, she yearns for more, she’s just not sure what that more is. When her leader sends her on a vacation of sorts she stumbles across a barely alive fae, Jael. Jael is second in command of the rebel group trying to assassinate a princess when they are ambushed by the city guards. Thinking she will bring him back to learn his secrets and then discard him, they are both surprised by everything that follows.
This is a shorter story and it is packed with so much. The world building is fantastic and the characters are all so complex. You can’t help but love Kalla and Jael (once he gets his head on straight). Even Corbin, who you won’t love at all, is well done and full of surprises. There is humor, love and sadness all in this book. I can’t wait for A Hunt Bound in Blood after reading this!

I AM IN LOVE. One chapter in for each of the main characters and I was completely in love with both of them. This is a wonderful story with many layers just peeking through, with such richness and depth. I used to consider myself not a fan of romance, but this romantasy has definitely changed my mind, for Ms. Walsh at least! The tale goes against what I think of as traditional (and somewhat annoying) romance tropes in many wonderful ways, and it filled my heart. I like a solid support relationship while the world falls apart around the characters. A lack of game playing just makes the story all the better. Although this story is complete on its own, there are a few threads lift dangling, and I can't wait to dive into the next book!!

A Dream Shrouded in Fury really is the perfect romantasy. In it Ms. Walsh takes two totally different factions and blends them to create the perfect love story. Kalla of the Gloaming Fury vampires is a child of darkness. Jael of the Soldaran fae is of the light. Kalla was looking for a way to feel alive while Jael only wanted to die... until they found each other. This novella is complete in itself but it still has threads that can be followed to create other stories if the author so chooses. I am very much hoping she does return to Golthwaine to create more magical stories. I really enjoyed A Dream Shrouded in Fury and I definitely recommend it.

Krista has absolutely outdone herself with this one. I have come to love how she creates very real characters to relate to, as well as weave beautiful prose full of immersion and emotion, in her work. And A Dream Shrouded in Fury did not disappoint whatsoever.
Kalla and Jael’s story of finding a new hope in life with each other was touching with the most precious romance story I’ve read to date. This is a MUST ADD to TBR for all romantasy fans.
I’m completely enthralled, and I can’t wait for more adventures in Golthwaine when A Hunt for Blood comes out!
