Fenric Feralas has a problem—either agree to assassinate the Necromancer of Boston, or lose his head. Taking the job under duress, Fenric heads right to the Necromancer and hopes to exchange what he knows for information about two old friends—only to come face to face with one of them in the midst of another assassination attempt.

Cian Brennan is not expecting to see Fenric—they last parted under extreme circumstances, at the dawn of a war that nearly killed Rory, and managed to drive Cian mad. Cian committed several murders while not in his right mind, and he'll be paying for it for the next thousand years.

Fenric spent over two centuries believing the Brennan twins dead, and when given a chance to reconnect with Cian, he takes it. He refuses to waste the second chance Fate has thrown his way, and his single-minded pursuit of Cian isn't as unwelcome as it might've been—Cian has missed Fenric just as much, and he's ready to see where Fate takes them, together. Dealing with an army of assassins, a precocious dragon, a petulant preteen necromancer, and a High Council of Sorcery that wants what Cian has is more than enough to drive anyone apart—but Cian and Fenric are ready to fight for their second chance at love and life.

Frankly, I barely finished this one. The writing was not great; lots of clunky exposition and "catching" us up on the entire series up to now, which was tedious. I liked Cian in previous books, and he was okay here, but the romance here was tepid at best. I appreciated the demi rep, but the conversations around consent and sensuality felt sooo awkward and forced; these are thousand-year-old fae, not sex ed teachers trying to explain to teens that "enthusiastic consent is sexy!" Quality has really taken a dive as the series has progressed and I'm not optimistic about the final book, but I'll still read it, lol.

Men Who Love Chaos And Each Other

I’ve been really curious how Cian’s story would play out. It was clear from the other books that Cian is ace leaning and after his murderous introduction into this series, reading about him falling in love was definitely going to be some kind of experience.

Fenric was a fun character from the start. I enjoyed the little glimpse we got into the two of them meeting and their reunion was nice enough but I couldn’t help but feel it was all a little lackluster. The two were playful and clearly comfortable with one another but I didn’t actually feel any kind of romantic connection between them beyond what was told to us before their relationship got more serious.

I also found the chapters from other’s perspectives to be interesting but over complicating the whole story. I want to have the resolution to the overall plot and I get other things still need to happen but it all feels like it’s moving at a glacial pace. I expected more to happen in this book and while the chapters from other POV were fun enough to read, it just felt like other characters and possible couples were being introduced to an already verrrrry drawn out series.

I want all the characters and side characters to get their HEA but maybe in a side series or something so the main plot of this one can finally be resolved.

As for the romance of this book, I felt it was done really well in relation to Cian’s feelings about sexuality and relationships.

The book was a fun read and entertaining but I’m ready for this series to be over. Let’s hope the final book gives us all the conclusion we’ve all been waiting for.

Tropes: Mates, Men Who Love Chaos, Second Chance (No drama, just circumstances), Low Angst, Dual POV, Found Family, Ace Rep
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5

A Joyfully Jay review.

The Edge of Fate is book 7 in Sheena Jolie’s fabulous Beacon Hill Sorcerer series and the books should be read in order. While Fenric and Cian are a new couple, Cian has been a pivotal character in prior books in the series. There is also an overarching storyline that is nearing its end (this is the penultimate book), so you are definitely going to want to start at the beginning. The book opens with a little history on Fenric and Cian’s relationship, taking us back to when they first met as they sailed to America 250 years ago.

his is one of my favorite urban fantasy series and I just adore these books and the extended group of characters. I will grab any opportunity to read a book in this series, or the wider Infinite Arcana Universe. We are so close to the end, so if you haven’t tried this series, I can’t encourage it enough.

Oh what a wonderful weaving of magic this book is🥰😍
I don’t have enough words. I LOVE our insight into Cian’s mind. His feelings now that they’re coming to live again. Just absolutely adore this book.

5++ absolutely magical stars from me❣️
I am of course totally biased, since I love Sheena’s work and this whole series.

I'm really sorry to say this, but this book just doesn't add anything at all to the larger story arc of the series. Its sole purpose is to bring Cian together with his love interest.
The one excursion (without spoilers) that has minimal to do with the story could have happened at any point in the last two books. Cian wasn't necessary for that.

I love the series, but this could have (should have) been a novella.

Or maybe I just don't like series where every secondary character has to have their HEA. Even if the story then has no additional value.

That all said I'm going to start again with book one now because I really really love the first 4 books from this series and can not recommend them enough.

Heather's Notes
I have always liked this series. I liked Cain and Fenric. I enjoyed there interaction. However, the storyline didn't seem to really go anywhere. The next book is suppose to be the last book. I will miss it.

This book is very different than what I thought it was going to be. And I loved it. Sheena Jolie did such an amazing job not only with Cian's story and his sexuality but with Fenric's brattiness and his overall chaotic nature.
This book is so romantic. Yes, it's bloody because these two are the best murder husbands there can ever be, but it's also soft, sweet, and gentle in the love story between these two characters to finally get their chance.
The plot is exciting and the way it ends makes me NEED the next (and sadly final) book in the series. I am waiting on pins and needles for the grand finale of the epic story of family and love that has been going on since book 1.
Cian and Fenric are perfect for one another, I couldn't have paired Cian up any better. He deserves to be loved and he's found that, and it is so beautiful to see.
The Edge of Fate is the perfect addition to this series/world and I bow to the magic that Sheena weaves in their words.

Oof

I was so excited for this book, but I knew after a few pages it was going to be a thumbs down from me. I don't remember if it's the same in the other books since it's been awhile since I've read them, but this book was REPETITIVE. Both the descriptions and some of the lines. This took me multiple days of picking up and slogging through vs. devouring it in maybe two sittings. That being said, I'm excited to get back to Angel as the main character, and I really hope to get more Eroch and Leo in the next book!

Edit 1/4/26: Even with Joel's lovely narration, I adore Fenrics accent, this was still a major thumbs down for me. Definitely mt least favorite in the series.

Loved this! I was so excited for Cian's book and it did not disappoint! Fenric is a great match for Cian and a wonderful addition to the extended Salvatore family. I can't wait for the next book, though I will be sad to see the end of the series.

I knew going into this one that I’d be reading it and skimming a lot of the romance (which, yes, is a large part of the book) so take my review with a grain of salt. Overall, this book felt like a deviation from the main arc to focus on one side character. Granted, we do have a second character, but I couldn’t connect with him. He was sprung too quickly onto me with no history mentioned and so it overall just felt like nothing more than an inserted love interest who, in my opinion, didn’t make sense as a love interest. I personally appreciated that Cian’s character is ace and didn’t need to have a romantic plot, so I was a bit disappointed by that. I skimmed a lot of the romance and read this book mostly for the few moments where bits of the main plot are set up for us in preparation for the final book.

Would I go back in time and still read this book, knowing what I know now?
Yes. Again, I went in with certain expectations and I’d probably still read it the same way.

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: Cian and Fenric have most of the POVs, which makes sense given this is their story. Again, I skimmed a lot of Fenric’s POV and any spots where Cian was suddenly waxing lyrical about Fenric which he did A LOT. I think I would have enjoyed it more if Cian’s love interest was someone we had met before, even in passing or in their history. Anything at all. If you can get past that issue, he’s written well as a cat-sidhe who can turn into two types of cats and spends so much of his time curled up as a cat letting Cian pet him. Cian struggles with his feelings for Fenric, which again, truly didn’t make any sense or ring true to me at all. If he’d been there before in Cian’s history where Cian actually spared a thought for him it would have made more sense that he’d actually have feelings, but it didn’t feel that way to me. The rest of the characters were, as usual, fun to see when we got a chance to see them and I appreciated that the book wasn’t 100% suddenly just two people.

PLOT: Overall, Cian’s fated mate suddenly shows up and Cian struggles to come to terms with his feelings for Fenric. This is the main plot. Lots of flowery descriptions of the same things over and over and then Cian, who made sense as an ace character, end up topping and having sex multiple times with Fenric. Again, it didn’t make sense. Otherwise, the main plot doesn’t move too much. Cian and Fenric help Angel to take out the assassins that are targeting the Salvatore clan, though most of it isn’t much but waiting. In the end, Fenric and Cian come together and Angel receives some big news at the very end which sets us up perfectly for the final book in this series. I’m so excited to get to it.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

1:5/low. It felt more like a beach read than anything else. Certainly no high stakes involved.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

50%. I mean, I went in with specific expectations and those were fulfilled. I didn’t personally feel a connection with our main pairing such as they were. But the 25% of the book that dealt with the overarching plot left me excited for the final book.

I know there is only one book left, but I might be done with this series. I both sad and a bit miffed because I loved the first 4/5 books. But with this book as well as the previous book, there are a lot of things that bug me.

First, the characters:

Cian was different in this book, for me, than the previous books. I didn't really get the bad*ss fae vibe from him. I mean, yeah, he fought assassins and whatnot, but it didn't feel the same? I don't know.

Fenric was adorable and badass-ish. I liked that he can turn in to both a cute house cat and also a wild cat. I didn't really have too much of a problem with him. What was a bit weird for me was that he's a cat shi (spelling?), so he has very good senses, as is shown multiple times in the story; how is it then that he asks Cian a few times if there are assassins nearby? And if they are human or not? Umm ... can't he do it himself?

I am not a fan of children books. It's definitely a ME thing, I am aware! But Eli is prominent in this book, as Cian babysits him a lot and teaches him stuff. I skipped those parts because it's not my thing.

The writing:

The POvs ... again. There weren't as many different POVs in this book, which was nice, but there were still multiple POVs! I am okay with having Cian and Fenrics POVs, but the others? Ugh. Then, there was the fact that every other paragraph of so, it'd say whose POV is was? Even if it was the same POV as the previous paragraph? Why? It felt choppy. I also wasn't a fan in that in a chapter, it'd go between Cian and Fenric a few times? Why not do a different chapter with a different POV? Or at least only change between the POVs once.

The freaking epithets! WHY? I am okay with "he was a fae" or "he's a cat shi(sp?)" to describe what the character is. I am also okay with "The fae" when their name isn't known. What I am not okay with is using said epithets instead of the character's name when we and others know the name! Having Fenric say something like "the fae was hot" instead of "Cian was hot" is so freaking annoying! And Cian did the same to Fenric. Epithets are also used for the other characters as well, like Angel or Danny. UGH. No. I get so annoyed. I am annoyed. Use their names, please.

The pacing of the story was a bit weird for me. Once, Cian and Fenric when assassin hunting, but then decided to take a lunch break? It didn't feel like things were pressing or dire. Things were a bit slow and just meh for me. Cian and Fenric were cute, but I didn't feel invested like I do with Angel and Simeon.

Sorry, I wanted to like/love this, but I just didn't.

This really is not a stand alone and I feel relies heavily on the love we already feel for the characters and story. Thus I really struggled with my rating. Sentimentality leads me towards 4* for now even though I sadly feel that it could have been better.

I so longed for Cian to find his partner in life and finally carve out a piece of happiness fir himself, not just witnessing it secondhand from the sideline.
Fenric was quite the character but I felt he quite suited Cian. He fit, he did not judge, he did not see Cian as a monster, he realised the toll losing Rory must have taken on Cian, he gave without question and just accepted him for who he was and that even an almighty being might need someone in their corner. I liked the short introduction about how they met and the 2 more action-y scenes where things were actually happening and progressing forward. Some quiet moments between them were also sweet and brought depth to their relationship and growing feelings like the scene in the tree, the fight scene were the kitty got hurt, the date in the pub, the bath. But what made me want to drop the * were the whole chapters were nothing really happened and I questioned why they were even there like fex the whole chapter 20. Yes, maybe one could argue a bit more insight onto Cian, that he has even more layers than we thougt. But if the chapter wasn't there it wouldn't impact neither the story and plot nor how I perceve Cian, Fenric or their relationship. The very small information we receive doesn't leat to anything and feels whole unnecessary. I don't want to go into any detail here even if I think it couldn't even be considered a spoiler, but who knows. I am reading and reading on and thinking, what are the assassins doing right now? Is someone monitoring them, why are they just doing nothing? Most of the time THEY seek THEM out. And the time they do I wonder as to why they took the job in the first place as they don't seem eager to do anything. Are they getting payed by the hour?

So yeah, while I enjoyed the catch up and the HEA for Cian I am not sure how I would have rated the book as a stand alone tbh

The Edge of Fate (Beacon Hill Sorcerer 8 or 7 depending)
By Sheena Jolie
Published by the author, 2025
Five stars

The penultimate chapter in the Beacon Hill Sorcerer series, “The Edge of Fate” indeed pushes Angel Salvatore’s story to the edge, but in this case it’s through the eyes of the ancient fae prince, Cian. Well, not only through his eyes, but also through the eyes of Fenric Feralas, a cat-sidhe who has known Cian and his twin Rory since they first came to America.

Cian has always been a troublesome character, mostly because of the way his character appears in the series—as a violent serial killer that Angel has to track down. His current status in the Salvatore family is weird, but in the world of sorcerers and fae, a little less so. In this book we learn about the backstory behind Cian’s backstory. And as we learn that story of flight from the pogroms of the High Council of Sorcery in Europe, we also meet the black cat, a fae almost as old as the twins themselves.

Cian is a tragic figure who owes his existence to Angel Salvatore’s compassion. In this book it all comes full circle as the complicated and diverse Salvatore clan—resurrected and re-formed in a new world—faces its greatest challenge. From the child necromancer Leandro to the toddler dragon Eroch, the book is filled with characters that are both amusing and oddly moving.

Angel and Isaac once found themselves alone, shunning the brooding mansion where there entire family was massacred by vampires under the spell of the High Council. That violent history is never far from mind, even as the newly-found Salvatore clan provokes even more bold attacks from the power-hungry and fearful European sorcerers. Sheena Jolie distracts us from that darkness with her endearing and/or fascinating depiction of a wide host of players who without question will stand by the young Angel when the final confrontation happens. Even as Fenric and Cian explore a friendship cut short two centuries earlier, the author digs deep into magical lore, keeping the reader a little off-balance and utterly fascinated as the story unfolds. She leaves us anxious for the final book.

Full of action and thrills like all the books in this series, this one has the sweetest love story I can recall among any of the couples we've met along the way in this book. Cian deserves eternal love as does Fenric another sidhe who is also a big-cat shifter.

Their love takes some time to develop as Cian is apparently asexual and has had no desire for a mate throughout the long centuries of his life. Fenric once thought he had a chance at capturing Cian's heart but it's been several hundred years since the two met and were separated at the start of the necromancers war and Fenric had thought Cian dead all that time. His surprise and joy at learning Cian was very alive was easy to see. I like the way the author handled their attraction and the slow development of any physical pleasure between the two.

I also enjoyed the rest of the cast of characters as the story had pause time for family and friends as well as adventures with attacking mages and the rescue/resusitation of the oldest vampire from his resting place in a tomb deep below the earth. I assume he'll play a major role in the finale as Angelo Salvatore fights his final fight in the next and last book of the series. I also love the little dragon and cute little son of the vampire and Angelo's grandfather, who had been thought killed in the war. The little guy has a British accent like his vampire father and, of course, Joel pulled a unique voice out of his pocket to make this character different from any other child he's previously done.

Kudos to Joel Leslie for not only creating a thousand unique voices for this series, but also for managing the variety of accents and foreign words and variety of sexes and species and on and on. Really a fantastic example of his talent. These stories are all great but they become animated and memorable in his hands.

Sheena Jolie has truly given us a gift with this continuation of their masterful Beacon Hill Sorcerer series. They have created a world with incredibly dynamic complex characters, expertly woven plot and mythos, and a universe so fleshed out it feels real even with the magical and fantastical elements of the story. We have experienced so much with these characters and finally get to know Cian much better. Fenric is such a breath of fresh air and a wonderful complement to Cian’s chaotic nature. It was a joy to learn their history and read about them finally finding a home with each other. The complex connections between Cian, Rory, Daniel, and Fenric are so interesting and well-done. Eroch and Leandro continue to be true joys as well.

One of the biggest strengths of this series is the continually building tensions and conflict between the High Council and Angel’s ever-growing clan. This book expertly moves that arc forward, and the ending sets up the final book of the series beautifully. I don’t know what I will do when this series is over.. I lost count long ago of how many times I have reread and re-listened to these books. Angel and Simeon and Isaac and all of them feel like family to me after almost ten years of following them, and until the final book releases, I will be rereading this one and the rest of the books again often. If you have not yet started this series, stop! Do not pass go! Do not collect $200! Start with book 1, right now! You won’t regret it..

I absolutely love this series. I both can't wait for the next book to come out and am sad because it'll be the last in the series. I loved that we got Cian's story here. He's been one of my favorite characters despite how we were introduced to him. Yes he has committed some horrible actions, but he was not in his right mind, and well I just love a guy with a good dose of irreverence and snark. Add in Fenric, who is adorable and just as snarky and I'm a happy camper. I loved that there was this ancient past history between Cian and Fenric. I was cheering for them to finally get the chance together that circumstances took away so long in the past.

The pressure is building in this book as the High Council of Sorcery is ramping up their pressure on Angel and his friends. They're determined and aren't afraid to send assassins against them en masse. Which is just fine by Cian and Fenric as it gives the two plenty of opportunities to go have some fun and smack some heads together.

The sort of cliff-hanger ending here felt like it was exactly where we were at for things and sets us up perfectly for this last book to come. I can't wait!

Seventh in series (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer), must be read in order. Paranormal. Second chance. Asexual representation. Found family. Multiple POV’s.

A further continuation of the Beacon Hill universe overarching storyline and the extended family surrounding the Salvatore clan, this story focuses on the budding relationship between high Sidhe Cian and his longtime friend cat-sidhe Fenric. After Cian’s redemption from his experience of almost losing his twin Rory he has become a ferocious protector of his brother and the Salvatore clan as well as a tutor to the youngsters of the clan, and we meet an equally capable Fenric and we get to see that centuries apart has not lessened their interest in each other.

I really enjoyed all the action, all the clan interactions, and especially the moments where Cian and Fenric are on page together slowly falling into a romantic relationship. There was a good balance of following all the members of this series as well as allowing for the budding romance, so the read was entertaining and left me ready for the finale. 4.5 rounded up

I loved this book and couldn’t read it fast enough. I’m a huge fan of this author, I’m totally biased and make no apologies for it.

This is a beautiful book. It’s slower paced (like Isaac’s) since the characters involved are complex. I mean let’s face it we all hated Cian on sight and now we love him.
He’s still a mystery on some levels.
Fenric is perfect for him. They originally meet in Portugal in 1775 (coincidentally where I read this book since I’m on holiday atm). They lose touch when Rory is nearly killed and Cian is focused only on helping his brother.

They meet again after Fenric is coerced into taking a contract to kill Angel.
The relationship blossoms and finally we feel like Cian’s long awaited HEA could be within sight.

Now it’s just a case of doing a slower re-read and then waiting for the final book in the series.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author.

“Cian rubbed a hand over his chest. It hurt there beneath his sternum, a deep ache that came and went, fleeting but no less painful for its brevity. He doubted he was suffering a malady—he never got sick. No, this was the pain of something else.”

I love this quote; that beautiful aching pain of new love!

As long as this author continues to write Beacon Hill books I will continue to devour them.

The Edge Of Fate is book 8 in The Beacon Hill Sorcerer paranormal romance series.

Firstly I am so happy Cian is getting his full redemption & HEA. Although this is a standalone within The Beacon Hill series I do highly recommend you read the series in order. The romance between Cian & Fenric (whom I adore) is a lovely second chance (with a ACE MC) if you don’t read the previous books the paranormal adventures will be harder to catch onto and trust you don’t want that cause this book is full of action and intrigue!

Also side note I need The underhill for a home, it’s marvellous and magical!!! IYKYK!

If you hate reading an entire series, or if you're on a really strict budget and you want to minimize the number of books you read for each series, then I think you could pretty much get away with starting on this one and giving the rest a miss. I'd recommend at least reading the first ever book, The Necromancer's Dance, but the point is that this book is a pretty good book to jump in with because Fenric is brand new to Beacon Hill's premier supernatural fam-clan, so we get to meet everyone through fresh eyes.

The sad thing though is that not much of the war plot moves forward in this book. This is definitely a book to set up the finale; the quiet before the storm. There wasn't even much of Eroch. You've been warned.

Cian Brennan isn't an ordinary serial killer. He's no longer insane, is an excellent babysitter/mentor for Eroch and Leo and loves Rory's mate, Daniel. Even Daniel's hugs. Simeon doesn't altogether trust him; stab a guy once and..... And Cian really likes tweaking the snarky necromancer's nose, loving to get a rise out of Angel.
I'm loving it that he's gotten his redemption arc/second chance book. Cat-Sidhe Fenric is the perfect mate for him. Snarky, slinky and sneaky in his four footed housecat form, Fenric purrs for attention and has loved Cian for 250 years. he's also a talented assassin.
This book has lots of tension and action. Violence. Blood letting. There's also some sweet and very steamy scenes. Cian and Fenric bring some major heat to kissing.
The story line is beginning to wind down. But there's lots of plot arcs that remain unanswered. Unfortunately we have a bit of a wait for book nine, I really can't wait.

Oh my wow. You really need to read the other books in this series as it has an interconnecting arc and characters. When I read that. Ian was getting his own book. I was jumping up and down. The book starts in 1775 when the twins were he.ping bring the supernatural people across the sea to the new world. On the boat, they met cat-sidhe Fenric. With Fenric in his cat form, he gravitated towards Cian. They ended up being friends. Once they landed in the new world, Fenric helped the people to get them somewhere safe. Fast forward 250 years, Fenric is tasked with by the council to take out the necromancer of Boston. The story starts from there with both Cian and Fenric reconnecting and getting closer. The world building is awesome with great heat and chemistry between the two MCs. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series as it will be quite a doozy.

I loved that we finally got Cain book!! I was intrigued to know his past and him being able to find his soulmate!!

I like how the book developed, we started with Fenric and The Brennan brothers first meeting, so so many years ago, how they escaped to the new world. We get another POV from Fernic of what happened when they arrived to Boston and how they lost contact with them after what happened to Rory. As an assassin Fenric is send to the Salvatore Mansion but knowing that Cuan is alive and happy ti help them get rigged of the people send to harm them. It’s fun watching Cían and Fenric reconnecting that both are full of mischief and chaotic, I love them!!

The book is entertaining and a great preview of what is coming next for the Salvatore Clan in the future, new characters and of course so much love between our favorite characters! I can’t wait for the next and final book!!

In the seventh book of the Beacon Hill Sorcerer, Cian, the murderous twin of Rory, meets his match and mate… and it turns to be a perfect pair!
So… Cian was one of those “fake” villains we’ve all been secretly rooting for… He redeemed himself through his relationship with the youngsters of the clan, and he needed a mate to complete him… enter Fenric, all kitty cat, moody and lethal… It only made perfect sense that somebody like Cian would fall for a cat-sidhe… they fit with each other perfectly, and their romance is only natural. There is also some adventure, enforcers causing mayhem, Angel being his grumpy but empathic self… In short, a great adventure and a sweet romance together
Looking forward to the next book in the saga!

Interesting but not a beacon hills book

Just like the last couple of books this book isn't truly a Beacon Hills book. This book should have been written as a side book since the main storyline had little to do with Angel and was entirely about Cian and Fenrick.

This book emotionally was all over the place and felt like the emotional involvement of Cian and Fenrick happened too fast; especially for someone who admitted he wasn't really interested in the physical side of a relationship. Two days later in the book Cian suddenly needs to express his penis' needs? Really?

Anyway, Angel and Simeon were side characters in their own series. Next book is supposed to be the conclusion, so we might get to see the amazing storyline and character development the first five books in the series had!!!

Have fun!!

Another great addition to the series!

At this point in the series it must be getting difficult to balance so many different characters and not have their appearances feel like they only show up just to be there. Sheena does it brilliantly, weaving them, the ongoing story arc, along with Cian and Fenric’s story into a well paced and fun to read novel.

As someone who we really first met when he plunged a knife into a much loved character, Cian wasn’t someone I thought could be redeemed. I was wrong. It has been wonderful to watch his journey from that very lost and alone person to who he is today and I’m so glad he and Fenric (who is perfect for him) now have each other.
