The Cowboys of Chance Creek #7

The Cowboy Rescues a Bride

Rate this book
Ned Matheson is sharing a house with the woman he loves, but he can’t kiss her, or even touch her. In fact, she can barely look him in the face. He knows he needs to be patient; Fila Sahar has been to hell and back as a captive of the Taliban for over a decade. Now she’s safely back on American soil, but her fears hem her in so tightly, she might as well be a prisoner again. If he wants to marry her—or even date her—he’ll have to help her regain her courage. He thinks he’s found the perfect way for her to become a strong, independent woman—he’ll give her a restaurant of her very own to run.

Fila can’t believe she’s finally home, or that a handsome cowboy like Ned cares for her, but before she can give her heart to any man, she has to find the courage to stand on her own two feet. When Ned surprises her with his perfect solution—the restaurant he’s leased and renovated in her name—she’s overwhelmed—with fear, not gratitude. She can barely leave the house, let alone run a business. So when Ned’s father sends them out of town to check on the family’s remote hunting cabin, she’s grateful for the delay.

Ned knows his father hopes this trip will split them up, but he’s determined it will bring them together instead. When disaster strikes, all bets are off. Ned will learn what it’s like to be helpless. Fila will have to recover the courage she lost years ago.

Can they survive the weekend? Or will this trip be their last?

I loved this book. I have liked this series as a whole but I think this book is my favorite by far. Ned and Fila were great and really deep characters. Ned had his problems but he was so sweet, patient, loving, and supportive. I loved the way he was with Fila. And as much as I loved Ned I adored Fila. She suffered so much at the hand of the Taliban losing herself and just becoming a shell. I loved how she healed and became her true self. I loved how brave she was even when she was so afraid and I loved how Ned told her over and over again what a brave beautiful fighter she was. The only thing I didn't like about this book was Holt(Ned's father) he was just an ass and I can't stand him. Best read of the series so far!!

In The Cowboy Rescues A Bride, Cora Seton takes back to Chance Creek. While this is book seven in the Chance Creek Series it is book two in her Matheson trilogy. A subsidies of Chance Creek. It seems she wants to marry off all those Matheson boys.

The first Matheson to fall was actually the baby of the family, Rob in The Cowboy Imports a bride. Holt, the domineering, arrogant, controlling father of the Matheson clan begins his plotting here. The next brother to fall is the oldest if the clan, Jake in The Cowboy Lassos A Bride. Daddy dearest continues his obnoxious plotting, making him a thoroughly unlikable character. Fortunately we see way less of him in The Cowboy Rescues A Bride. He is still up to his hateful shenanigans but because Ms. Seton kept his character limited to a few pages, he was tolerable.

Fila Sahar has had a rough life. Born in the United States and raised there until the age of 12, then her family traveled home to Afghanistan for a family event, where both her parents were killed in a car accident. Her new "guardians" were members of the Taliban and Fila's life changed. No more music, no more friends, no more education. Kept a virtual prisoner until she found a way to escape. She even managed to avoid recapture..You would think she would be strong and proud but somehow she has managed to collapse into herself. Seeing only a handful of people and comfortable only in her home she shares with Ned Matheson.

Ned Matheson is the second son, constantly in the shadow if his older brother. Suffering from dyslexia he never learned to read and dropped out of school early. Using anger as his only means of protection. All he has ever wanted was a chance to prove himself. But with Fila he can be himself. Now all he dreams of is her. He has even arranged fir her to open a restaurant in town. Now if he can only convince her that she can do it.

Watching Fila find her spine is amazing. She discovers that she doesn't need rescuing. Instead she is perfectly capable of doing the rescuing.

Ned has his own battles to win. His overbearing, obnoxious father that we are supposed to like has declared that he wants Ned married and not to Fila. As a matter if fact he wants Fila gone... jerkface. Ned also has to face his inner demons. Can he learn to read? And should he?

So far this is my favorite Chance Creek books. Granted I haven't read the entire series yet but I have read enough to know it's a fun, enjoyable series but this one is definitely my favorite.

I just think the title might have needed to be changed. In this book in the series Fila did most of the rescuing in this book. She saved Ned at least three times. However, this was a good read I enjoyed seeing a softer side to Ned because honestly for most of the other books he was a jerk. I am definitely interested to see how Luke's story goes.

Well, it's been a while since I've reviewed a Chance Creek book, and this one has been sitting finished in my laptop for a long time, too. But better late than never, I say~

Most of you who have been with me through my journey concerning this series know how much Ned was NOT a personal favorite. He was rude, and close-minded, and all things wrong when it comes to a man. And I viewed him as a mini-Holt (and God knows I can't stand the man!). But he grew on me! Turns out, Ned was insecure because of his dyslexia, and he always acted the way he did because he felt he had something to prove. Not that this excuses all that he said and did in the previous books. But it went a long way into helping me understand the man behind the brute.

It took the second-born Matheson the right woman to fall in love with in order to finally become something better. Not only for those around him, but himself as well. And it was extremely satisfying to read the character growth he underwent in his story arc.

And that's all the positive that went on with this story. I love Cora Seton. I believe her to be THE goddess of western contemporaries. Chance Creek is a fictional paradise for me, one that houses a lot of different, lovable, flawed and wonderful people. Her style is amazing, and it sucks you right in - the dialogues, the wit, the tension and the bonds between her characters.

But this book couldn't get the perfect 5 in my list for a couple of reasons - though I didn't think those reasons were enough for me to lower the rating any more, because, again, the writing is perfect and just because I have personal issues with some fictional characters doesn't mean the whole book gets the heat for it.

The first reason is Holt Matheson. Say what you want, people, but this man is toxic! He keeps pitting his own sons against each other. Keeps pushing them to follow the path HE wants them to take. Keeps being stubborn, and even when he budges a little bit - which happens only after one of his boys harshly rejects him and/or gets seriously injured - it doesn't feel like a true victory against his hard-headed ways.

The other reason is Fila. The female lead in this book didn't exactly deliver the way I expected her to. I understand the trauma. And the reactions. But at some point, I ended up just feeling sorry for poor Ned. Hear that?! I SAID "POOR NED"!!! JESUS!
Because, yeah, the guy was tiring himself out trying to please everyone. No wonder he was angry half of the time and lashed out. After a certain part of the book, and considering the romance was already being built from the previous story, her behavior just ticked me off. And, just like Holt, she had to witness Ned getting physically hurt to start getting (keyword, start) her priorities straight. It wasn't like she didn't want him, she had her issues, which was only understandable after all she'd gone through, but feeling jealous and being passive-aggressive when Camila came in the picture? (because, yeah, that's the way I can describe her attitude) Not. Cool.

Still, the story was full of fast-paced scenes and high tension, what with Fila's anxiety and Ned's bull-like take on life. It was certainly interesting, and set a good ground for the next book.

***I was given an ARC from the writer in exchange for an honest review. The opinion stated in this review is solely mine, and no compensation was given or taken to alter it.***

We first met Fila in 'The Sheriff Catches a Bride' she's the woman who traveled across the country to thank the children of Aria Cruz for the donation that allowed to escape the hands of the Taliban. Unfortunately they followed her and the aftermath of that encounter has had a dramatic effect on her. In spite of her efforts when she tries to sing or look a man in the eye, she finds herself having a panic attack. When she moved from the bunkhouse of the Cruz ranch she originally moved in with Luke and Mia with Ned. Luke had no idea of how to help her adjust and he likes Mia anyway, so they switched.

Ned has fallen for Fila and is determined to help her find her way. His father, on the other hand, thinks Fila is too broken to ever be a good wife for Ned. He forms an idea that could help her and incorporates something she loves doing, cooking Afghan food. He leases a restaurant and with the help of his brothers and the Cruzes cleans and decorates the space into something practical and calming. This leaves Fila feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, yet grateful.

There's a new character in this book, Camilla. She's rented the space next door to Fila's restaurant to open a Mexican restaurant. Camilla is everything Fila isn't. Boisterous, flirty, funny and outgoing. When Holt meets her he thinks she would be a perfect wife for Ned.

Ned isn't giving up on Fila encouraging her to explore her new space and research the requirements to open. As if Ned isn't doing enough, Luke is also pulling his strings as he hands him documents to order supplies, knowing full well Ned can't read them. This triggers Ned to do something about that.

Another confrontation with Holt has Ned bringing Fila with him to their hunting cabin to clear snow from the roof. This becomes a very integral part of the story as the events that unfold bring both terror and confidence to Fila. Her internal journey also reveals she is very much in love with Ned.

A page-turning read with family drama, some terrifying events, romance and some sizzling heat.

Starting the next book now. I can't wait to see what's in store for Luke and Mia.

In book seven in the Cowboys of Chance Creek series, cowboy Ned Matheson is falling in love with his shy, timid houseguest, Fila Sahar, despite his gruff father proclaiming Fila is no good for him.
After ten years of captivity as a Taliban prisoner, Fila has escaped Afghanistan and now lives in Chance Creek, Montana. Her tight-knit group of friends want to help her succeed and straighten out her life, but everyone treats her with kid gloves. Due to her trauma, she’s afraid of loud noises, being around large groups of people, singing aloud, and drawing attention to herself. She’s especially afraid of men, except when it comes to Ned. When she and Ned wind up stranded in the middle of a snowy mountain forest, she has only two choices—give up and die, or push past her pain, fear, and anger to survive.
I’m surprised I liked this story as much as I did. Ned was a jerk in the prior books, but he grew on me in this one. While he was patient with Fila and gave her tough love when she needed it, he did push her too hard at times (buying her a restaurant without asking if she even wanted one was pretty insensitive, in my opinion). He was also blind to her emotions when it came to his friendship with Camila, a new woman in town.
I loved Fila! After all the horrible things she’d endured, I enjoyed seeing her break free little by little. Each victory was something to be proud of. She was strong where it counted and became her own woman throughout the course of the story.
I’m looking forward to the next book.

Ned Matheson wants to be taken seriously by his family but doesn't see that happening any time soon. Ned is hiding a secret from his brothers that he has dyslexia and can hardly read. Fila Sahar is a former Taliban captive living in Chance Creek but lives in constant fear anyway. Fila does nothing but jump at shadows. Fila wants to find a way to give back all that Ned's done for her. Little does she know that Ned wants her to be his bride. Fila is stunned that Ned would create a safe environment like her own restaurant. Fila wishes she had confidence like her many friends do. When Ned has to go out the family hunting cabin. He invites Fila along to keep her away from his father's clutches. Will Ned continue to hide his secret? Can Fila come out of her shell? Your answers await you in The Cowboy Rescues a Bride.

I'm loving this series! The characters and story were interesting, complex, meaningful, down to earth, compelling, honest, raw, real, rich, and bold. I've got to admit that Ned is my favorite for all of the challenges he faced throughout the series so and in this book too. Fila has been likeable since her introduction and became more after reading this story. I look forward to my next adventure in this series.

True courage is keeping in going even when scared

Ned is finally getting to run the ranch. Fila is still struggling to overcome her fears after escaping from the Taliban. But she is loving sharing the cabin with Ned as much as he loves sharing it with her. Unfortunately, his Dad doesn't approve of Fila. How will they ever make things work? This is a powerful and emotional story about courage, fear and pride.

The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has some steamy suggestions but not much detail. The characters are vibrant and kickass. I will be honest, at the start of This series, Ned was my least favorite character. Now he and Fila are 2 of my favorites. Both have severe obstacles to overcome. One is just more visible than the other. You will have to read this to see what I mean! Read this series in order first. Then read Heroes of Chance Creek in order, then SEALs of Chance Creek, then Brides of Chance , and Turners vs... I can't remember the other family name. Finally, there are the start of 2 new series set in Chance Creek: Holidays in Chance Creek and House for Sale Navy SEAL Included. These all have some action and strong emotions. Enjoy!

Before I start on the book, I gotta say, “Why is the cover a shirtless cowboy. I know these covers are supposed to look hot, but they’re also supposed to be on people in the book. This is simply impractical. This can’t be Ned. I actually laughed out loud when I looked at it.

Okay, so I’m not swayed by cover art. Regardless of the ridiculous cover, I really enjoyed Fila and Ned’s story and how Fila’s Familia got started. Ned and Fila have to have the worst luck, but it pays off in their relationship, Fila’s future, and how she, and they, are seen by all those around them. They come through so much and emerge stronger.

I appreciated the treatment of dyslexia and the pride that goes with the difficulties. I am likely dyslexic in Hebrew, though there are signs in English too. I’ve only come to accept this during covid, and getting a diagnosis right now is tough. I could really relate to some of Ned’s feelings, and I have none of the severe dyslexia he does. I also appreciated Fila’s description of the Afghan people as a people with a long and proud history separate from the Taliban. Ms. Seton wove a couple of important lessons into the pages of her book.

Ned and Fila couldn't be more opposite if they tried.

Fila has been a captive of the Taliban for the past decade after they killed her parents and kidnapped her when they went to Afghan for her grandmother's funeral. Now after she escaped, she ends up staying at Ned's for a month and soon they start having feelings for each other. But Holt has other plans and threatens to disown him and kick him off the ranch if he continues to pursue her. Fila can barely stand to leave the house because of her fear of the Taliban. When she and Ned go up to the hunting cabin to shovel snow off the roof before it collapses, Fila finally finds her voice and strength after an accident leaves Ned in a bad way. Will someone come to rescue them before something serious happens? Will Holt change his mind about her after she saves Needs live several times while the are at the cabin?

I have never liked Ned in any of the other books. The heroine when she was introduced in the other book, was likable but didn't sit right with me. I'm glad you could see Ned's struggle with his reading and he was getting help. The heroine sounds like she's got real problems. These two sound like they are trying to beat the other to has the most problems.

I did like how much strath in character the heroine had once they went to the cabin. I also like the chemistry between the two of them while they were there. I believe this is where their real relationship had started, the hero's father should keep his nose out of their relationship.

The introduction of another sub character, while fit into the storyline, the attitude was pretty full on and I didn't like it.

Okay... Ned annoyed me far less in this book than he did previous books.

I actually wasn't looking forward to this book, because I didn't previously like the Fila storylines, or anything to do with Ned.

However, this was enjoyable.

Unfortunately I should have done my review several days/and a few books ago, and now I can't remember any details that I wanted to talk about.

So yeah... enjoyed it more than the previous book. I really did not like Jake and Hannah's book.

Another great book in this series! I probably enjoyed this one a bit better than some of the others. Been waiting for Fila's "rescue" though. This story had so many twists and turns that it kept me reading to see what else could happen!!
On to the next in the series! Only one brother left to fall, and I think he already has....but so has she! Just wondering what kinda of twists will be thrown their way!

From the weak comes strength

Fila who we met in a previous book had had a very tough start in life. She manages to escape and come to Chance Creek. Ned who has his own problems with his dyslexia has struggled through life. He has a kinship with Fila trying to overcome his troubles. An accident give Fila the strength she desperately needs to see that she and he are not broken.

Great read in the Cowboy's series from Cora Seton! Fila was the one doing the rescuing this time, after stumbling out of the shy stupor she'd been in since she escaped back to America. Ned, although I really disliked him in the previous books, showed his softer side in dealing with Fila and her issues. I really wish Holt wasn't so nasty and abrupt in dealing with his sons.

My favorite in the series so far. I wasn’t sure I’d like Ned, but he was great with Fila and how he handled her with care. Loved how she ended up being the Hero at the end and saving Ned.

The ending seemed a bit abrupt. I was hoping we’d get a chance to see Fila’s restaurant open. Not a fan of Camilla or the idea of sharing though.

Ned is now in charge of the Double Bar K ranch now that his brother Jake is married. Fila has been thru hell to get back to America where she was born. Her life has been in fear for 10 years. Ned has taken to a liking to her. Read all the stories that bring them together.

This review was originally posted on Blushing ReadsI didn't like Ned prior to this book! That has happened with most of the Mathesons for whatever reason. One thing is that as you read each of their stores is that they are the way they are for a reason. Ned has dyslexia and has always had a hard time with it which is something that his brother Luke never seems to let him forget. He tells Ned it is his place to do the feed order however, in my opinion that didn't have the effect that Luke wanted.
“There’s something you could do for me,” Ned said, breaking into her thoughts. “That envelope over there has some information about feed supplements we need to order for the cattle. I don’t have time to look through it today. Think you might take a look? It’d be a help.”
Understanding broke over Fila. He wanted her to read through it because he couldn’t.
It hadn’t taken her long to discover Ned’s secret, once she’d come to live with him. It had been the clue to all that anger and ill-temper everyone else talked about. Ned was a proud man, just like the village men had been back in Afghanistan, and just like them he hated to feel at a disadvantage in any way. Just like many of them, he couldn’t read.

She knew what a man looked like when he couldn’t read but wanted to pretend he did. She’d seen Ned act the same way soon after she arrived on the ranch. It didn’t take long to put two and two together. While many Afghan village men might be illiterate, few American men were. She realized the disadvantage Ned was under. Saw how hard he worked to cover it up.
Understanding his secret made the rest of his behavior easy to decipher. And since she didn’t expect Ned to read, she didn’t inadvertently put him into embarrassing situations.

Fila has had a time of it that is for sure. Her parents were killed and then she was kidnapped and held for ten years. She was born an American citizen but spending ten years away being a captive has changed her. She is scared of her own shadow. Yet with Ned it's different. He doesn't push to do more than she can and he buys her a restaurant so she can find her way. Which of course makes her even more nervous. Then you add in the fact thtat Ned's father hates her and is trying to get her out the way and I mean can the poor girl get a break!
“They took away…everything. My family. My home. My country. They kept…saying I was wrong. Everything I did was wrong. Everything I felt was wrong. Everything I thought was wrong. Until I didn’t know what was wrong or right anymore.” She took a deep, shuddering breath. “It was like being peeled away layer by layer by layer until there was nothing left. Until I became nothing. Until I disappeared. I thought when I came home I’d get it all back again, but—” She shook her head. “There’s nothing to get back. Who I was—” A tear trailed its way down her cheek, despite her best efforts. “It’s gone.” Her voice cracked and she fought for composure, her fingers entwined so tightly together they ached.

Ned didn’t need to know all this. She didn’t want him to know it. The words still spilled from her lips, though. “Now it’s just the same here as it was there. Everything I do is wrong. Everything I say and think and the ways I react. The way I look—it’s all wrong. I don’t fit in here any more than I fit there. They won!” Her voice spiked upward as she put voice to her worst fear.

Ned tried to reach for her, swore when the motion jostled his leg, put down his bowl and finally touched her hand. “They did not win.” His voice was nearly a growl. “You got away from them. You didn’t become one of them. If they’d won you’d have a suicide vest strapped on and be marching into some crowded building. All that’s happening right now is you’re readjusting to coming home. Soldiers go through the same damn thing, you know. That’s what you’re like—a soldier coming home. A prisoner of war.” Fila scraped the wetness from her cheeks with her sleeve. She hadn’t looked at it that way. He touched her again. “You’ve been to war for over a decade. Give yourself time.” He patted her knee. “And for God’s sake, go ahead and scream once in a while. Cry. Throw things. Let it out.”
“By the way,” Ned said casually. “The way you look is not all wrong. You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
Fila quickly darted to the kitchen and spent far more time than necessary spooning more soup for each of them from the pot on the small cook stove. The knowledge that Ned thought she was pretty—beautiful, actually—warmed her all the way through.

There are a few things that I love about this story! First is Ned's courage to do something about his reading. That isn't something easily admitted and he has lived with the problem his entire life. Yet he is determined to be more. Second is the way that fate steps in and shows Fila that she is anything but broken and damaged. Ned's father forces Ned to go deal with an issue at their cabin. He takes Fila with him and then their is one disaster after another where Fila steps up and shows her true self.

Loved this story and its main characters. Definitely one of my favourites in this series. Only problem I have with Seton is that when I start a series I have to read all the available books, one right after the other. Highly addictive author.

This one of the most powerful books I have read recently! Fila's story was heartbreaking but with reading. Seeing Ned respond to her the way he did made me cry. This is one of my favorite couples in this series. I loves this story of such a strong couple.

Loved reading Ned's & Fila's story. It was a delight to share their journey on the path to true love. Overcoming Holt's stubbornness, Fila's fears, Ned's pride & a couple of life threatening situations made this an awesome book that I couldn't stop reading.

Very well written

Written differently than the other books in the series, which is a plus. The main characters were shown in a different light. One my favorites in the series.
