I love these quirky mysteries. Great stories and would appeal to anyone who likes young adult. November and Kale make a great team. I wonder if they will become more than just that? x

This wasn't a bad read, but I didn't love it. It just couldn't hold my interest well unfortunately.

The thought of a dog getting his head chopped off made me feel Ill, so that didn't help.

Loved this the first time round. Reading it with different characters and keeping an open mind I read this as a completely new book. Looking forward to getting to know November and finding out how her career will progress.

Originally a Young Adult mystery prequel series belonging to Tim O’Rourke‘s Keira Hudson paranormal series, November Lake: Teenage Detective was reworked and released under the pen name Jamie Drew. Taking a step away from the paranormal, and into the mystery and crime genre, November Lake: Teenage Detective follows a young police recruit, November, as she solves mysteries, seeing things much quicker than most – working out how a crime has been committed and being able to explain why it must have been a specific person who carried it out.

November is a very likeable character with a great deal of intelligence and wit. She is very quick off the mark, being able to take in her surroundings at the same time as holding a conversation and weighing up possibilities in her head. By piecing her puzzles together and seeing much further than most in such a short amount of time she manages to solve many mysteries. However, this does come at a price where she acts upon her findings immediately and places herself in danger in order to finish her work and prove her findings.

I love how each story is a separate mystery for November, however the book as a whole is continuous and follows November through Police Training School and preparing for her exams. In this first instalment we are treated to three fantastic stories from November finding a colleague’s dead body (The Dead Girl in the Room) to a kidnapping (The Kidnapping at Blackwater Farm), and then the mystery of a ‘disgusting creature of a man’ coming to search for his dog in The Menacing Stranger.

Each story has November teaming up with fellow officer, Kale Creed, and shows the early signs of a great partnership between them. There are also signs of a deep friendship brewing as they spend time away from work to study for their exams. They stick together really well at all times, and I love the way they bounce off each other with their thoughts and humour.

With some nice twists throughout you will find that during many scenes not all is as it seems. During the second story, the kidnapping, Lake and Creed feel they have no option but to intervene which winds them in a great deal of trouble and danger. After being driven off a country road and seeing the car that raced passed also lose control they begin to check the area and try to call for assistance.

“The trail soon petered out or became invisible amongst the wild thorny shrubs and bushes that covered the slate walls on either side of the country road. The fog was still dense and surrounded us like smoky cloud. It muffled any sound, drowning our world in silence. The whole effect was disorientating, and it wasn’t long before I had lost all sense of direction. I rummaged through my coat pocket for my phone… I plucked my phone from my pocket. There was no signal.

“I haven’t got a signal either,” Kale said, standing beside me, phone in hand.”

Whilst the third short story is probably the most eeriest of the three. Again, not all meets the eye but the whole book creates so much mystery and curiosity for the reader you simply can’t put the book down until you have all of the answers.

I can’t remember reading this much mystery packed into short stories. The author certainly has a way of telling them, making them believable and so full of life. After reading this first instalment I had no hesitation to read the second. I’ll definitely be reading more from this series!

This book was the absoulte BEST!!!!!! November Lake is everything I hope to be after college. Police Detective. In this book November and Kale Creed solve 3 mysterys, and each one leaves me wanting more. THe first mystery is called "The Dead Girl in the Room". In this once they solve the murder of Constable Anne Smith, or so they thought. They have what happened right just who is dead is wrong. THe next mystery is called "THe Kidnapping at Blackwater Farm". In this one they are on their way to Kales parents house for the weekend, November tagged along cause see doesn't have any family left after her mom died of cancer when she was a child and her dad was murdered in the field, thats why she became a detective, to solve her dads murder. Along the way a guy named Clive runs them of the road in the fog then crashes into the tree ahead and says he has to get to his sister who has been kidnapped by a guy named Morris Cook, who had been in prison for 12 years. Clive takes them to the house and it turns out Clive is dead on the floor with who appears to be his sister "tied up" in a chair. November realizes its a trap but Kale doesn't see it right away. Morris was pretending to be Clive to trick them. Their plan was to burn the house down and have Kale and November be their "bodies" so that Cook and Clive's sister could get out free and clear. But November has other ideas and uses her smarts against them. The third mystery is called "The Meancing Stranger". This one happens when Kale meets I lady at McDonalds crying her eyes out about a dog. Hearing the story of this meancing stranger who has been coming around her house looking for his dog shes been freaked out. Her boyfriend suggested that she take a trip up the coast so he can "deal" with the stranger alone. When November hears his name, Ethan Cole, a spark lights as she remembers his name and the name of the village, Little Choke, connected to a murder a few years ago. As November starts to out together the pieces of this puzzle she solves the murder of Veronica Straw. Jamie Drew was just amazing in this book!! I love the details of the mysteries and how the author protrays the characthers. Drew really has created my role model in November Lake.

"November Lake: Teenage Detective, Book 1" is an unusual read. It is about an eighteen year old girl who is attending an academy to become a police constable in Britain also while he investigates the unsolved murder of her police constable father. This first book is a compilation of three novellas entitled "Dead Girl in the Room, The Kidnapping at Blackwater Farm and The Menacing Stranger." In some ways, November Lake reminds me of a British Veronica Mars.

I enjoyed the character of November as well as the novellas but wished it had been a full blown story instead of mini ones. The shorts cause the world building and flow of the read to be choppy, thus my reason for the four stars. I hope that book two is an actual novel otherwise I doubt I'll continue with the series.

November Lake book 1 is a collection of 3 novella length stories, that take place over the course of a week, with each story taking place just a few days after each other.

The three novellas are connected by the main Characters, November and Kale, who are young police recruits. And each of the stories is its own self contained whodunnit.

The stories are entertaining enough but the time frame feels a little unrealistic. What are the chances that 2 young recruits would find themselves caught up in the middle of 3 crimes in the space of a week... especially when they aren't 'on the job'

It wont stop me reading November Lake book 2 though.

The mysteries were mildly interesting, but the style of writing felt quite clumsy and the dialogue was extremely wooden. At one point, a character says in conversation to another character: "I peered out into the garden, a sharp gasp tearing up out of my throat.”

I'm sure it was supposed to be a very tense moment but I just laughed, because who talks like that?

There are 3 quick short stories that follow November Lake as she goes through the police academy along with her new friend Kale. November is exceptional at seeing all the small details and connecting all the dots in regards to solving weird cases that seem to surround her.

like it was wrote by a teenager as part of their coursework, very predictable, unrealistic and amateur.

I think the author should write a full length novel. I honestly don't think I'll be reading Book 2 et al.
