I never meant to ruin the world, yet here we are, regardless.
Unfortunately, when the Lady created the world of Timonde as her own private dollhouse, she condemned millions of people to the cruel rule of an evil empire and its dark god of death, Orcus. When he points out the horrors she's committed, the Lady decides she must submit herself to a thousand years of slumber, lest she damage the world more.
Orcus has been obsessed with the Lady since he was created by her, thought to be her ultimate nemesis. Disappointed in both her original act of creation and the solution she deems acceptable to atone for it, he determines that only he is qualified to mete out her punishment.
When the Lady wakes alone in Orcus's bed, she has no idea what to expect from Orcus. His touch is entirely too light for punishment, but he seems determined to own her, body and soul. Submitting herself to his control might have been the worst mistake she's ever made, because she risks losing the one thing she's never really had… her heart.
An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady, Including and Account of Her Captivity Under Orcus, God of Death is an enemies-to-lovers tale about the creation goddess who has regrets and the death god she allows to punish her for them.
I love this little world. So when I saw the novella coming out, it moved straight to the top of my reading list. Kass O’Shire has something special here… the way she writes and the world she created is just so unique and interesting. This one was super spicy (thank you, Kass!) and also answered a few questions readers had… I’m loved it from start to finish.
The Lady has decided to call all of her empowered creations together, as she’s deeply remorseful of the way in which life has played out for her human creations, their trials, pain, and constant suffering not what she’d anticipated, so she’s announcing that she’s going to leave them for a millennia, as she’s out of ideas for how to go forward. Her nemesis and death god Orcus is the last to arrive, and he privately proposes a slightly different course of action during The Lady’s exile from Timonde.
What follows is The Lady’s firsthand account of the time spent under the care and keeping of Orcus. It’s revelatory and sensual for The Lady as the god she created teaches her a great deal more about herself - and him - than she’d ever imagined.
If you’re already a fan of Kass O’Shire’s work, this novella is an absolute gift that will leave you wanting more. If you’re unfamiliar with her work, it’s still a very creative, clever, and interesting read, and I highly recommend it.
I was generously provided an advance reader copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m pleased to share my honest review.
I would like to thank Kass O'Shire for an Advanced Reader Copy of An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady: Including an Account of Her Captivity Under Ocus, God of Death, in exchange for an honest review.
This novelette was an excellent addition to the Shades of Sanctuary series focusing on the infamous and much beloved Goddess. Providing a back story for her thousand year sleep, which plays a pivotal role in the series and answering the questions of why she began her "hibernation" in the first place.
This book features: ✨Divine Enemies? to Lovers 📔 Captor and Captive ✨ He Falls First 📔 Shadow Tentacles ✨Dom/Sub 📔 Creation Goddess x Death God ✨ Emotional Healing
An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady: Including an Account of Her Captivity Under Orcus, God of Death; focuses on the Lady, who is responsible for creating all within their world of Timonde - modelling it on worlds she has experienced. However, her actions are not of a benevolent Goddess, but rather treating the world as her own dimunitive dollhouse with its people her dolls; condeming the thousands to a cruel, war-ridden existence; her arch nemisis and being of her own creation Orcus at the helm of destruction. However, the fact remains that in the context of God-hood, she is but a child and her actions the petulent tantrum of a child without the guidance of a parent; her own mother being a neglectful and rather careless Goddess who created her on a whim. She begins to realise that her actions have been abhorrent and wishes for penance - in her eyes going to sleep and leaving her world to fend for itself is the most appropriate response. As such, she calls a counsel of the Gods of her won creation to ensure that the world does not fall apart without some form of guidance.
Orcus, a death God, created by the Lady herself; has been obsessed and unbeknownst to her, in love with her for over a thousand years. Unimpressed with both her actions and her solution; he decides that he is the most appropriate person to mete our her punishment.
This novella was an excellent addition to the series and it is imperative that readers wishing to read this, first pick up Kass' first three novels in the Shades of Sanctuary series in order to understand the contextual importance of this novella. It takes the form of a journal - found within the caves where the Lady rests. It features the footnote contributions of Sirin, the fmc from the first book in the series, who is "translating" the tales for historical reference - this novella is no different.
Despite being a shorter read, this addition to the world is full of beautiful and poetic prose - culminating in a rich storyline. The characters (namely the Lady) show significant character development despite the short nature of the read and without spoiling the plot, begins to learn about herself. Orcus, despite being a Death God, proves to be cinnamon roll in disguise - the gradual reveal of which made my heart SOAR.
The representation of BDSM was EXCELLENT and focused on consent and aftercare in a way that many authors fail to do properly. Orcus' role in the sub/dom dynamic was implemented beautifully. And I highly recommend to anyone looking for a monster romance with sex/BDSM positive representation.
Now, while this novella answered many questions, it also raised a number of new ones. That being said, Kass has made it clear that future books will provide clarification and the Lady and Orcus will get a HEA - moving forward from the current HEAFN. But it was also mentioned that their relationship and indeed the Lady's growth was not over!
I cannot wait to see what Kass has in store for the Shades of Sanctuary series in the future! I continue to pick up everything Kass write and put her in my top 5 monster romance authors - if you are looking for a cosy fantasy-inspired monster romance, this novella and the Shades of Sanctuary series is for you!
Another perfectly and unexpectedly tender novella from Kass O’Shire. It’s a creator-goddess meets-death-god enemies-to-lovers situation. It has spice, inner turmoil, and divine existential crises wrapped into a tight, fast-moving little story that somehow manages to be both romantic and beautifully introspective. This has Von and Sage (Between Life and Death by Jaclyn Kot) vibes, but make it cozy and soft.
As always, I adore the footnotes and the historical paper feel of these books. It adds such a rich, in-world texture, like you’re reading an actual relic of divine history annotated with academic insight. There’s a surprising amount of nuance packed into this. It's about responsibility, vulnerability, and finding the courage to want something. It gives those who hold up the world for everyone around them permission to let someone else take care of them instead.
The prose is lush, the sensuality is earned, and the emotional payoff hits harder than you might expect for a book that is a bit more than 100 pages. This is biting, tender, and darkly romantic. A perfect bonus tale if you’re already immersed in the author’s larger universe, but it also works beautifully as a standalone.
Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
This was one of those books that I went into without any expectations. I wasn't sure of the POV or how the story was going to evolve. But I'm glad I did because it was such a magical experience.
The story was a direct narration of the events of Lady Aviana's self imposed exile. It was entirely in her POV and I felt like she was an extremely sympathetic lead.
She was given power at such a young age and without fully grasping the delicateness of creation or life she never quite saw how her actions became unintentionally harmful until it was too late. But I never felt like she was a tyrant who simply grew tired of her subjects, instead she was a scared girl who never really had a guiding hand through her formative years.
Her submission to Orcus made sense in that way. After having so much power foisted onto your shoulders, it can be very liberating to let someone else take the reins.
In the story, there are no true villains. There is just right and wrong. Orcus hardly ever felt like he was doing anything wrong though, he was always his own being but he chose to devote his existence to making The Lady happy. He had a better grasp of his subjects and you could tell that he was overall more mature than the person who created him. He wasn't without faults but he never internalized them and instead chose to tackle them.
That's where this story finds us. Overall it's a tale of happiness and forgiveness, but it doesn't have an ending quite yet. In fact I feel like it's left very open ended and I hope Kass continues to share the journeys that these two take on their road to bettering themselves and their home.
A little shout of to Sirin, our devoted author who had some of the funniest footnotes ever!!
kass has done it again… aka written a tender and perfectly bite-sized novella. imagine a creator goddess and a death god in an enemies-to-lovers vibe with just the right amount of spice, inner turmoil, and divine existential crisis. it’s fast-paced, romantic, and somehow deeply introspective all at once.
and omg, the footnotes. i will die on the hill that footnotes should be standard in fantasy books. there’s so much nuance packed into these pages – it’s about responsibility, vulnerability, and having the courage to actually want something for yourself. it feels like a love letter to everyone who spends their life holding up the world, reminding you it’s okay to let someone else take care of you, too.
the prose is lush, the sensuality feels real and earned, and the emotional payoff hits surprisingly hard for a story that’s smol. it’s biting, tender, and darkly romantic – everything i want in a novella.
Do I love it when the dark and scary bad guy turns out to be a cinnamon roll for the woman he loves? Yes. Yes I do. Do I love a good story that teaches the reader to have grace for themselves for their younger past mistakes? Absolutely! When life and death are not enemies but loving sides of the same coin, the chemistry is amazing. I love The Lady and Orcus and their bond and their growing bond beyond the roll of enemies they initially took. I thoroughly enjoyed this excerpt from her diary and the tenderness shown between them. I was expecting it to be spicier but actually liked that the nature of her punishment ended up being healing rather than hurtful. As always, Kass does a great job and I’m excited to read more!
An Excerpt from the intimate Diary of Our Lady by Kass O’Shire
Thank you to the author for allowing me the opportunity to read this!
Trigger or content warnings? Yes, included in book.
Details? FMC’s name is The Lady. MMC’s name is Orcus. The Lady created Orcus to be her nemesis, but he has evolved. The Lady has never had sex, no need for it. I believe Orcus has. He also talks about how he fell in love with someone else. This is an open ending, at best a Happy For Now. Bits-and-bobs? Imagine accidentally creating your soulmate (not that The Lady has connected the dots yet).
My thoughts? (My difficulty with even starting this was not the book itself, but rather how my kindle messed up the formatting. It went light grey lettering and black background and I was having an incredibly hard time focusing on the book itself.)
I can not wait for more instalments of these two. Orcus is the opposite of The Lady in all the ways she could have thought up, but she did not anticipate him evolving into his own being. Something that is not of her thoughts, but rather his own. I think he is the perfect deity to help her come into herself.

(Read as an ARC) I’ve truly enjoyed the style of how this series has been written. Having each book written as a scientific finding really sets the series apart from others. Introducing this novella as the actual found journal of ‘Our Lady’ was a fantastic idea. The story of Aviana (as she so graciously names herself), ‘Our Lady’ the goddess, and Orcus (known to closely resemble to death God) is pure romance. Aviana is looking to punish herself for her misdoings in the world she has created. Orcus convinces Aviva to completely give herself to him while under stasis and allow him to still give her updates of how her people are fending without her. Orcus doesn’t punish Aviana as she thought he would, instead he cares for her while teaching her the importance of vulnerability. Submitting to his every control, Aviana comes to learn that Orcus is her safe place. The nurturing, the binding, the shadows, the tentacles….. Kass O’Shire did no wrong with this novella.

*ARC review* this novella gives us a look at the lore of the series and takes place well before the rest of the stories. We get to see why the Lady chose to sleep and how she and Orcus come together. it's short but sweet and spicy.
Short, sweet, spicy and gives some more lore to the wonderfully fantastical universe Kass is crafting! I've thoroughly enjoyed almost every book the author has written, and I'm excited for whatever comes next!
This is my first foray into Shades of Sanctuary and I am excited to read the other books (all of them have been lurking on my TBR). The concept of a deity atoning for the wrongs they've committed against their own creations is incredibly creative and a joy to see play out with these characters. I loved the relationship dynamics between the Lady and Orcus...such delicious scenes of control and submission. Looking forward to diving into the other stores from this world!
This was so damn cute. Honestly, I could have read way more of these two. Their connection with each other was adorable and his complete infatuation with her made me giddy lol This is the second ARC I’ve read from Kass and she has yet to let a reader down, that’s for damn sure. I love her work and the little footnotes are still cute and fun to read.
This was such a good novella!! The world that Kass has created is so unique, and I was so sucked in to this mythology. A goddess deciding to punish herself for her mistakes by submitting to her nemesis that SHE created? YES MA’AM.
Don’t get me wrong, the spice was SPICIN’, and I absolutely loved itttttt. But the way the MCs story began, and the lore behind their relationship was so so well done that I couldn’t put it down!
I love these two, and this origin story just confirms that I need to go back and catch up on all the books I’ve missed!
TROPES: Dark but Cozy Shadow Restraints Death God/Creation Goddess “Punishment” 😛
Thank you so much to Kass O’Shire for sending me a copy for an honest review 💖
⭐️ARC REVIEW⭐️ If you love lore and/or are looking for a Kass book to jump into the world of Sanctuary then this is such a great read. Kass has such a unique voice and it is so clear even in a novella because somehow I laughed and cried reading the story of two deities trying to forgive themselves and each other after realizing they needed to grow for the better of their world. Our Lady thinks she knows what she deserves but Orcus, her opposite in every way surprises her with such dedication the onto word I could describe it is - breathtaking. 🖤
This is a spicy paranormal fantasy novella in the Shades of Sanctuary series. While it can be read as a standalone, it’s best enjoyed after A Polar Expedition and The Curious Incident of the Great Cookie Snackcident of 979. I believe it was originally part of a Monsters in Love anthology.
Told from the POV of the Lady’s diary, the goddess herself, the story details her “punishment” for past sins at the hands of Orcus, the shady daddy god. It includes elements of dubious consent, so be sure to check trigger warnings if you have sensitivities.
I enjoyed the story and the dynamic of their relationship. I always love spending more time in Sanctuary and learning about its rich history. This was a fun, easy read that left me wanting more. I’m especially curious to see if this thread continues, since there’s some mystery about the timing of events. The next planned book in the main series, The Adventures of a Tiny Tree, doesn’t appear to focus on these developments, but either way, I’m excited to see what happens next.
Spice: 5/5 Plot:4/5 Writing: 4.5/5 My Enjoyment: 4.5/5
"You don't fix things by running away like the spoiled princess you were when you created this world. You fix them by making it right." - Orcus
Orcus was designed to be The Lady's perfect villain. Thwarting her plans, playing games with her through their respected people, losing when the situation called for it, etc. When they spoke in person, he would call her princess and not address her by the title of Goddess or otherwise. Enjoyed getting under her skin as his obsession for her grew. Orcus was content with being within his own shadows and not overstepping or telling her how he felt.
Until The Lady announces she's going to go into a long slumber. He sees how damaging that would be to the world she created. Sleeping away a problem isn't going to fix it or guarantee the person will learn their lesson. Orcus decides to take matters into his own hands and ensure The Lady will grow from this bump in the road. He first needs to get her to agree to his punishment and rehabilitation. Maybe he will confess his truth to her while she is within his dominion.
"You wanted a good story. . .and every good story needs a villain." - Orcus
I unfortunately haven't read any of the other novellas within this world setting. But now I need to go back and read them! I loved the author's note for this diary before digging into the excerpts. As I read through the story and looked at Sirin's notes I chuckled. I could only imagine Sirin clutching their pearls a couple of times with some of the scenes or how Orcus addressed The Lady.
The writing of this novella was interesting. I was appreciative of how these were excerpts from a diary but felt more story like than the usual "dear diary today, I. . .". We get insight into The Lady and how she was just thought into existence and then left alone. No mentor or teacher or anything. With all this power she created a world to try and be like the "big kids". Thus, mistakes were made but also a lot of good. I mean for someone with no previous training I think she did a wonderful job!
I loved Orcus a lot! How The Lady created him and gave him freewill. Therefore, the scoundrel he is broke the mold and changed some things up! He used his experiences and things that helped to humble him on The Lady. I laughed at the times The Lady seemed more villainous than the actual villain she created! Believing they were still playing games, and she figured out his dastardly plans before they came to fruition. She was wrong in the best ways!
This is a lighthearted novella! There's some language throughout. Feelings that the world would be a better place without her in it (not suicidal!) because of all the mistakes that transpired. Feelings of inadequacy, sadness, and more. Things stay on the lighter end of the scale.
"Once I saw the cracks--in you, in my logic---they were all I could see. . .and they were beautiful." - Orcus
I felt like The Lady was a micro manager but with a bunch of toddlers who couldn't be left alone for a second! She's been well past due in for a long vacation! Orcus not telling her that this "atonement period" is one for rest and reflection. The chemistry between the two was great and had already been building for a long time! I really loved Orcus and the little tasks he gave the goddess. We do get spicy scenes, and this man knows how to tease and edge! Taking control from The Lady and helping her to safely be able to submit. Utilizing his shadowy tentacles to the max and hearing no complaints from the goddess. Well, maybe one. When he walks away leaving her wanting more!
We get an HFN (happy for now)! I loved the conclusion of their story and have more incentive to read the other novellas! I don't think this book will ruin/spoil anything for the others. I need to just take a month and read all the other installments. Love Kass's writing and I want to read more from her. I'm also interested in seeing if Sirin pops up in any of the other stories!
Do enjoy the novella with a Goddess who just needed a break and a Death God who wishes to privately worship her! And don't forget to give the author some stars!
She created the world. He was made to destroy it. Now she must surrender to him to save it.
After centuries of ruling as a detached goddess, The Lady chooses exile to atone for the damage her creations have endured. But the only one powerful enough to oversee her slumber is the villain she built to be her perfect opposite, Orcus, a death god of shadows and restraint. What begins as punishment turns into something far more intimate.
Stripped of divine control and placed in a mortal body, The Lady/Aviana is forced to feel what it means to be vulnerable. Orcus takes charge, guiding her through emotional and physical submission that mirrors the suffering she once imposed. He knows her more deeply than anyone ever has, and she begins to question if his rule is a sentence or a salvation.
As their power intertwines, trust forms where resentment once thrived. The line between captor and partner fades. In their most intimate connection, something new is born: magic remade by redemption, desire, and choice. What began as penance becomes a love story between two beings finally seen, finally equal.
Aviana starts as a guilt-heavy goddess seeking escape, but slowly becomes someone capable of reflection, connection, and emotional growth. Orcus evolves from the role of constructed villain to something far more complex: a partner, a guide, and ultimately, her equal.
Their dynamic begins rooted in power imbalance but shifts toward mutual trust and transformation. Through consent, care, and control, punishment becomes healing, and submission becomes a shared path forward.
A dark, steamy, intense enemies-to-lovers divine romantasy exploring power, responsibility, dominance, submission, identity, transformation, forgiveness, intimacy, creation, consequence, and connection.
4.95 only because I wanted more…and after that author’s note, maybe that’s in the cards??
The longing, pinning and devotion from Orcus wa stop notch. I was living for those moments where he confessed his feelings and how he'd always done anything for her. How painful it had been to realize his love was not reciprocated. But this God saw his opportunity and ran with it! He was not going to let the oportunity to spend year after year with his Lady, alone and with all her attention and body to himself.
And seeing the Lady, not only find herself, but also her love for him, was beautiful. How she thought she wanted something, but once Orcus was there, he knew what she needed instead, how it was not pain she deserved, but time to grow and learn. Seeing the Lady find her name, her voice, and her knowledge was just as good as the spice and the sweet feelings between these two.
Thank you, Kass, for the e-arc!
Quotes:
Perhaps that was part of my punishment. I'd developed some sick fascination with the man I'd warred with for centuries. Now, I'd have to submit myself to his whims.
I wanted whatever he would bring me. Somewhere within, I craved it. He was right; I was his.
"You looked down at your people, your heart in your eyes, tears streaming down your face. And I realized: I would give anything for you to care about me half as much."
"Every sensation you feel, every sound, every cry you release belongs to me. Your first lesson, princess, is what it feels like to lack agency. When it comes down to it, your pleas-ure, your frustration, your very power are mine."
"You've been the light to my days for centuries, but it's well pastime I show you the darkness you've wrought."
I craved his touch in ways I had never craved anything before. I'd never wanted for anything, never needed anything at all. For the first time ever, I needed something. His touch.
Perhaps then, it wasn't weak if I needed him... perhaps we were each other's soft place because with each other, we could be truly whole.
Kissing Orcus was essential, as integral to my wellbeing as my own magic, as food or water now were to my mortal body.
This, this was the perfection of two beings created perfectly for one another, the ultimate joining in a symphony of sin, though there was truly only glory to be found.
To me, it was only logical. If I was the Lady, he was my Lord.
"Do you see now? That together we are more than we could ever be apart."
Kass O'Shire has done it again with this beautifully written novella about the wonderful Lady herself. Thank you so much for this fantastic, beautiful ARC.
If you are already a fan of this author's work then, like me, you will be salivating over the lore and little tidbits scattered throughout this. If you are new, it's still a very creative, enjoyable, and spicy read that I highly recommend, and I hope it has you seeking out her other books.
Aviana is a young goddess who wants to better herself for her people but isn't sure how. Feeling a weight of regret for her past actions, she decides to go into a deep sleep and leave Timonde to grow without her. She expects physical punishments are what she deserves in her time away, but Orcus, a death God of her creation, nemesis, and her captor has other plans to challenge the goddess. Especially since he has been in love with her for thousands of years. 😉
This author always does a wonderful job of writing the act of love and my god, Orcus is a beast in the sheets (hello shadow tentacles). But this time I found myself falling harder for all the emotional talks within this read between the two characters. Especially the ones that involve allowing oneself to be cared for by the ones who love them. Forgiveness, having compassion for oneself, and of course believing you can change for the better. Not just the ones you love but also yourself. Ugh, my heart and my watery eyes.
Also, I loved the author's note at the end of this novella. It was informative, gave a real insight into the intention of the story, and made me feel closer to her creations and characters.
LOVES: - The Lady’s thoughts at the beginning, and motivations throughout, had me very intrigued and it felt realistic for what a god could potentially be like - Orcus is a character that I quickly came to love. He doesn’t let her run away from her responsibilities, he helps her find a way to learn and grow from her guilt while giving her exactly what she needs, even if it isn’t what she expected 😏 Plus, the shadow tentacles, yeesh 🥵 - The footnotes were fascinating. The “history” of this world the author has built and the comparisons to earth made it feel like something I could connect to and identify with. - This was a novella so as far as slow burns go it wasn’t THAT slow, but it was still one of the sexiest slow burns I’ve ever read 🔥
“I think… if we can be vulnerable, we could do, create, experience, some amazing things.”
At first, the “original author” note at the beginning confused me, but the author’s note at the end explained everything so well. It didn’t take me long to figure out how meta this book is anyway. It’s like a journal annotated by someone that was all written by Kass. Kind of a mind trip, but it made sense to me within the first chapter.
Clearly, I need to read more from Kass because I really loved this. I very much want to know more about this world she’s built and her writing style seems to be right up my alley!
Thanks to the author for the advance copy 💝 Releases on July 15th!
I was incredibly lucky to receive an ARC of this novella from Kass O'Shire, and I am absolutely thrilled to share how much I adored it! If you're a fan of rich lore and the quintessential enemies-to-lovers trope, you need to pick this up.
An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady: Including an Account of Her Captivity Under Orcus, God of Death might be a novella, but it packs a powerful punch. Honestly, my only wish is that it had been a full-length novel because I simply couldn't get enough! It's short, sweet, and hits all the right notes, leaving you completely captivated.
The dynamic between Orcus and The Lady is everything you could want in an enemies-to-lovers story. They are truly destined to be at odds, and watching their relationship unfold is a masterclass in this beloved trope. Without giving away any spoilers, this novella is also brimming with fascinating lore that beautifully expands upon events and characters from other novels in O'Shire's universe. As someone who has now read three of her works, I can tell you that her world-building is truly something special.
This was my third dive into Kass O'Shire's incredible universe, and each time I'm left more impressed. I genuinely cannot wait to immerse myself in the rest of her novels! If you're looking for a quick, impactful read that delivers on character, romance, and world-building, add this to your TBR immediately.
First of all my eternal thanks to Kass for being the absolute best author and sending me this ARC! I was so excited to get a glimpse of our Lady and her story though this novella and it was a wonderful read!
I want to give the heads up going in that this is a piece of the Lady’s story, not her entire backstory, as the title shows. But it is 100% the puzzle pieces I love building that make Kass’ world so interesting to me!
One thing I loved about this story is the authors portrayal of Orcus, God of Death. If you give me the opening I’ll rant about Greek mythology and how gods were given rolls, rather than being inherently evil and Orcus is a perfect representation of that view! He is viewed as evil incarnate by humans, when it’s just in a role given to him through creation.
When I read that The Lady based herself on Sisi, an empress from Austria I happen to be obsessed with, I fell even deeper in love with her character! But even past that, the Lady is such a relatable character for me, especially in the year of our lord 2025. Her need to be cared for as the eternal caregiver brought me to tears and made me take a hard look at my own need for a break. I will be toasting to Aviana and Kass during my staycation next week
And as always the footnotes make these books shine
An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady releases July 15th so make sure to read it asap!!

I want to take a minute to really appreciate the lore and world-building in this series! It always amazes me how detailed it is! And I think this book adds so much to it. We get some questions answered and get to know Our Lady that's who created this elaborate world.
The story begins with Our Lady preparing to leave her creation, because of the guilt she feels for causing humans (and other beings) so much pain. She's stopped by Orcus, who offers to punish her and take care of her world while she sleeps. Their dynamic was very interesting and I like the approach Orcus had to "punishing" the Lady. I think it showed the more emotional side of s/m really well. It wasn't about hurting the other person, but rather about helping them discover themselves and learn to take care of their desires. It was refreshing! In such a short story, the Lady had great character development!
The steamy scenes were well written and highly intimate, though one part made me stop , but it was small and didn't matter that much to me. Other than that it was hot!
I highly recommend this book to everyone that loves the Shades of Sanctuary series! If you haven't read any of the books, it would be harder to understand everything that's happening.
This novella is beautiful. One thing I’ve come to know about the way Kass writes is that whether it’s a whole book, a novella, or even dialed down to a particular chapter and passage.. Everything is so beautifully transcendent.
The relationship between these two characters tore my chest wide open in 100 pages and poured Orcus’s very soul back inside so I can sit with his selfless adoration for the rest of my life.
He may have ruined all men for me for a long while, because ugh he is the most perfect example of a dom with his submissive’s best interest at the forefront of everything he does. The way that she describes his facial cues and little indications of how much he cares for her without saying it is enough to take my breath away. When he starts right off putting her in his lap and feeding her? I just knew this was about to be a full YES read.
The sweetest part of the whole book though? Making this powerful goddess name herself. And then how easily it rolls off his (sexy and bumpy) tongue throughout the rest of the novella.
Seriously. This is such a short read and for a fantasy it still does quite a bit of world building… but MY GODS! This is a profound story. (And it’s also hot too! 🥵) You absolutely need to read it and find for yourself.
Such a good read! This isn’t your typical monster romance but it’s still very much a monster romance, just with cozy vibes (which I loved, lol).
The story weaves in themes of forgiveness, healing, growth, and learning to let go of control. We follow Our Lady, the creation goddess, and Orcus, god of death, during a period of consensual captivity where she’s forced to confront her past mistakes. She believes the world would be better off without her but through Orcus, she begins to realise she’s so much more than her regrets. With his help, she starts to become the goddess he’s always known she could be.
And when he admits he’s been obsessed with her all this time, with that deep, instinctual desire to please her, to love her? Ugh, I got all the best feels! Aviana (Our Lady) starts to realise she can truly be herself with him. That she needed someone who would show her how to let go, how to take care of herself too.
Of course, the book is spicy (very), but it’s also so sweet and soul-connecting. Their dynamic is one of equals, not enemies and it makes the romance hit even harder.
It’s a short novella set in a really intriguing world that’s described in just the right amount of detail, enough to draw you in without being overwhelming. I finished it wanting more!
💜Shades of Sanctuary is one of my favorite series, so it should be no surprise I was anxiously awaiting this next installment, the novella An Intimate Excerpt of the Diary of Our Lady, Including an Account of Her Captivity Under Orcus, God of Death.
As per usual, Kass O’Shire did not disappoint! This gem 💎 is a DELICIOUS bite of lore! This peek into the deities and pivotal decisions of our Lady which lead to her slumber provides both context into the past but some intriguing bits of foreshadowing and maybe future possibilities?!?!? (I’m dying can’t wait to see more!)
I was so incredibly enamored with the relationship between the Lady and Orcus and the PROGRESSION! His control and her submission are glorious! I want MORE! 🤤
Shadow. Tentacles. YES. PLEASE.
💀Divine enemies to lovers 🌘Captor/captive 💀He falls first, a thousand years ago 🌘Funishment with shadow tentacles 💀”Right now, you're mine. All mine.”
What a beautiful piece! Shades of Sanctuary deserves SO MUCH ATTENTION! PLEASE 🙏 if you love magic, shifters, cozy gaslamp, and spice do yourself a favor and pick this series up!
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author. My opinions are my own. Thank you!
I absolutely loved this story, if you love cozy, Gaslamp stories with spice then I highly recommend this book! If you’re new to fantasy/romantasy then this is the type of book to start off with. It can be read as a standalone but definitely can be enjoyed as part of the series too and it’s short enough to keep you captivated until the end.
In the latest installment of the Shades of Sanctuary series, we get to meet the lady who created Timonde, after reading about her in The Curious Incident of the Great Cookie Snackcident of 979 and other books in the series. Its a new take on enemies to lovers with a Goddess who created her ultimate nemesis who just happens to be the only one who can “punish” her for treating the world she created as her own play world. Although punishment is rather a loose term for what the death god Orcus does to her. The best part is that she thought it was a good idea to immortalize herself in the form of a human woman………….. 👀 IYKYK!
I love how Kass’s world building and writing style, make you feel like you are both an observer/historian and a participant. It speaks to my inner book nerd researcher and reader experience. 5 ⭐️
This is the book for all the girls who love lore! This was a huge lore drop, giving us a look into Our Lady, the creator and goddess of the universe our beloved Sanctuary is set in. I, for one, am a lore lover, getting a glimpse into everything was soooo satisfying to me! Getting to see the personality of Our Lady and the dynamic between her and Orcus was amazing, as we usually regard him as a villain of sorts. It’s a classic Persephone and Hades feel, with us getting Our Lady’s name! (which I won’t spoil!)
The dynamic between Our Lady and Orcus was high tension with soft edges and sweetness that I think will surprise you. I’m always a sucker for harmony and finding your other half, which is what this story is at its core. Finding the one person who understands your mind and soul, who holds them dearly. It was soft, it was devotion, it was spice and discovery. The spice only added to the depth, and it was amazing! Orcus is definitely another shadow tentacle daddy who is eager to please and teach Our Lady the pleasures of life *wink wink*. I loved it and can’t wait to learn more!
