Hazel Longuet - Biography

Hazel Longuet is the author of the House of Scarabs series, mythological action thrillers that follow a trio thrown together by a heritage passed down their family trees for over 3,000 years. A passionate reader, Hazel’s first love was always writing, and an unexpected illness enabled her to start writing the first book in her series, House of Scarabs. She draws from her varied life experiences to frame much of her writing.

Hazel Longuet’s survived a plane crash, a revolution, and even nearly drowned twice - so, to say she’s accident-prone is an understatement! A gypsy at heart, Hazel loves to travel. She has lived or worked in Bolivia, Colombia, Egypt, Dubai, and Sweden and has travelled to every continent except Australia. She was raised on the grounds of Longleat, an English Elizabethan stately home, where she cleaned out lions’ cages and guided tourists around areas of the house.

As an international business consultant, she was lucky to work with amazing companies and gain friendships with people from around the world. She now splits her time between Egypt and England, where she’s shadowed by her devoted Rottweilers, who are rumoured to be the inspiration for some characters in her novels.

After reading the first book in this series and loving it, it didn't take me long to pick up book two and what an opening it had! That first line is a hook that digs deep, along with the scene that follows - a mummy has awakened!

This urban fantasy series has multiple povs, action, adventure, wholesome characters, woven together with magic and egyptian gods!

I really loved the concept of what would happen if the mummies (and all our favourite famous Pharaohs of ancient egypt) started coming back to life and how humanity would react to such an event, and to Hazel's credit I think she hit the nail on the head! I had to remind myself I was reading a fantasy book because it totally felt believable for a moment! It's one of those stories that stick with you and really gets you thinking.

I thoroughly enjoyed Amenhotep's story arc and growth as a character. His was my favourite POV to read. The Phantom was a wonderful character, too, with a roller coaster of a story arc! There were some heartfelt, emotional moments, action, magic, and deeper meaning beneath the story of the meaning of life, doing good by your fellow man and learning to forgive yourself. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Resurrection, myth and religion

The first book was different and grabbed attention, this book was a bit less. It raises more questions and threads for future books than resolves anything. The lack of trust Ellie had in her husband that could be forgiven by both in five minutes after three years of distrust was not believable, then he dies saving her the next day after having sex that night while other partners onboard, hearing the reunion, unbelievable. And both she and the husband are immediately back in love but she never listened or even thought it could be a frame up or allowed him a hearing, just became a man hater. The husband continued loving her through everything, planning to protect her from all dangers. All unbelievable. The myths and Egyptian themes were interesting. And the theme of true loves that can't be together is becoming a trend.

I loved this! There was so much going on. I have a serious soft spot and fascination with Egyptian history and mythology. Add in a secret society or two, life and death stakes, a good helping of supernatural meddling and some raw human emotions that grip at your heart, and call me love struck. This book has it all. Highly recommend :)
