Doing Life
After a devastating explosion rocks their military mission, Lance and Sloan return stateside in rough condition. Lance has been blinded by the blast, and he breaks it off with Sloan, believing Sloan will be better off without him. He heads for small town Texas to recover at the Rockin' W and learn how to live again.

I enjoyed this one so much better than the first. There was mention of Matt, and I think she’s going to drag his love story out over the series, and he’ll probably end up being the last book just to keep us coming back. Sneaky!
This storyline was so much better than the first book. The relationship between Lance and Sloan was there from the start; they just had an intermission whilst Lance learned to be loved in a new way by the man who knew him in his previous life.
“Lance was Sloan’s home, and if he never, ever got to touch the son of a bitch ever again, it wouldn’t change a thing. Lance was his person, and Sloan was going to keep him.”
Lance didn’t want to be pitied or become a burden, and Sloan wasn’t prepared to back down in showing him he was neither. Sloan also needed to learn how to show his own vulnerability and let Lance take care of him in return.
I’m still finding it hard to get my head around some of the language. I can’t figure out if it’s just grammar mistakes or she’s writing in her own accent? Either way, it takes me a while to get used to it. Some of the language also makes them sound like old hippies using sayings like “ Rock on” all the time. 😂
Those were my only issues though this book is another heartwarming love story between ex-veterans who are dealing with new lives. Learning to live again, love again, and laugh together again.

Lance is blind, with other injuries and is working on his recovery, just like his roommates at the facility. Great men who are coping with their war wounds as they try to continue living.
Sloan, a cop, is also ex-military, and Lance catches his attention in a special way.
We see how they work together, have therapy, horses, and learn to navigate getting back into the community.
Lance and Matt, used to be together, and were in the same explosion, and now are thinking about getting back together.
Each man has been coping, so their re-connection is swift, but not easy.
There are guide dogs, situations and an emergency rescue, which is frightening.
A beautiful, realistic story, with a variety of injuries and the personalities that are unique.

This book picks up after book 1, Wounded Warrior, with the Rocking W a fully functioning rehabilitation horse ranch for wounded veterans. Lance is one of those wounded veterans, caught by a bomb, left with many scars, a bad leg, and blind. He is living in a house in town with a small group of other veterans going through the program, continuing physical therapy and learning skills for the blind as he learns to navigate the small town with his seeing-eye dog, Abby. He is surprised one day when he runs into Sloan, his fellow soldier and former lover, here in town to track Lance down and win him back. Lance had left Sloan, believing he would be a burden and didn’t want to tie him down to a blind man, but Sloan still loves him and won’t give up until Lance says he doesn’t love him anymore — which he can’t. The journey to feeling capable enough to handle life away from the rehab center is one that takes months, but Lance keeps working and Sloan is there no matter what. When a natural disaster occurs, Lance finds that he has healed more than he ever thought possible, gaining confidence in himself and what he is capable of, ready to move on to the rest of his life with Sloan.

MY OPINION: This is the second book in this series, and I liked it just as much. What a story of love and patience and finding a happily ever after.
We are taken to the Rockin’ W ranch that had been planned in book one. You see the previous characters a little, but overall, this is a whole new story with some great guys. In my opinion, this isn’t a typical romance book; this is a love story from the very beginning.
Sloan and Lance were both in an explosion when they were deployed. Lance lost his vision, had burns and scars on his face, and there was muscle damage to his leg. He found himself on a long road to rehab, and after the hospital, he went to Rockin’ W to learn how to live.
Sloan was wounded too, but most of his damage was suffering from PTSD, which included pain from losing his K-9 partner. Both men suffered; both men were working through their thing. Sloan wasn’t going to let that stop him from finding and taking home his person. Lance was that person, and he would do whatever it takes to someday take him back to Santa Fe and call him his own.
The book follows that story. Lance has to learn to be a blind man in society, including life with a seeing-eye dog. He has to learn if he can function outside of the rehab facility. There were other worries, too, including the ability to be intimate. They find their way and grow. It's a slice-of-life story about how, when things change, you can't give up but have to find your new normal.
I loved this book because it was men who had to be vulnerable to find love. They had to trust and be patient. And more than anything, they had to love each other enough to fight hard. For me, this was quite emotional. There is a lot of anguish because losing what you had known in your life is terrifying. It’s a lot less scary when you do it together, though.

I’m new to BA Tortuga’s work and I’m looking forward to reading more. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good addition to the Rockin’ W Series. I liked this second chance romance between Lance & Sloan. Both of them served in the same unit, were together but after they were both caught in an IED explosion, Lance is left blind as well as sustaining damage to his leg which they managed to save. He left Sloan believing that it’s what’s the best for Sloan’s happiness. Sloan ends up tracking Lance down to ask him why and to let him know that he’d happily stand by him through thick and thin.
Things don’t go smoothly to start with because Lance is adamant that he’s no good for Sloan due to his injuries. Sloan tells him that he was also left scarred from that day, even though his aren’t as physical mainly PTSD. I liked how their rekindled relationship progressed and their doggos Abby and Maynard just added to the story. I love the found family of Wounded Vets who’re part of Rockin’ W Ranch have created. I’m looking forward to reading more from this series as it continues, as well as more books from BA Tortuga in the future. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.

This book is awesome until the abrupt ending; it's not quite satisfying. I don't know exactly what needs to happen, but it feels incomplete. Don't get me wrong, I like the story well enough. I usually enjoy BA Tortuga's books and this is no exception. The angst and steam level is high. The storyline itself is exciting and unique. There are also some dark moments.
Lance's and Sloan's story is fraught with challenges. Lance is blind, disably lame, and very noticeably scarred. He was caught in a land mine blast while on tour. Sloan was farther away, but was caught by the fire blast and shrapnel. Needless to say, both men have PTSD.
They were deeply in love in the service, but Lance broke up with and sent Sloan away after the tragedy. He felt too damaged and too broken to be with Sloan, who he feels deserves to be with someone better. Sloan wants only Lance.
Like I said, I absolutely enjoy BA Tortuga's books and I absolutely connected with the MCs. The writing is very descriptive making the imagery easy to visualize. I just realized. There aren't any antagonists, or bad guys. Well, except Will, the sadistic physical therapist. lol All in all, I happily recommend reading this.

So glad we get two books at the same time in this series...
Sloan was in the service and met Lance there. The two of the started a relationship and both were injured in the same explosion. While they both need to heal Sloan is devastated that Lance dumps him. He knows both were hurt and both have long lasting injuries, but he still wants and needs Lance. When he finds out where Lance is he gets himself hired there as a police officer and just waits to run into Lance and prove he is not done with Sloan, by a long shot.
Lance, who was blinded in the attack, decides he will not burdened Sloan with his new future and dumps him once they got back stateside. Lance is new at the ranch and is not happy that Sloan is here. He has his dog in training and is trying hard to not need anyone, but most of all not Sloan. However once they talk Lance starts to see things a little differently.
Will Sloan be able to convince Lance to give them a try? Will Lance feel strong enough to leave what he has been working on to recover? Will Sloan be able to return to his department or decide to stay in Texas? Will Lance have to use his training to save someone? Will Sloan find him in time?
Again great series, can't wait for the next installment!

BA Tortuga returns to the Rockin' W ranch with book two, Doing Life. Readers follow Lance, a medic who is at the ranch trying to learn a new normal without his sight. He left his lover behind after the bomb, not wanting to be a burden. But his K9 handler lover has tracked him down at the ranch. Sloan knows he doesn't want to do life without Lance. He lost his K9 in the same bomb that took Lance's vision, and Sloan isn't about to let the bomb take more from him than it already has.
While the characters from book one do feature in book two and book one sets up the ranch, the story in book two is otherwise pretty self-contained and could work as a standalone.
Lance and Sloan come together relatively easily, though realistically, they didn't have a super fantastic reason to be apart to begin with. Respect is given to Lance working through learning new skills to enable his independence. There is also time spent with a lot of open communication between Lance and Sloan sorting out what their lives will look like with the necessary changes in place.
Overall, this story is as advertised, so if you like the synopsis, you'll almost certainly be a fan of the story.

I’m so glad these guys found their way back to each other
Phew, this series is hitting me in the feels every time! Granted, I felt like this one was emotional in a very different way but there was still so much emotion between Lance and Sloan. I think the biggest stand out to me was that Sloan, who didn’t suffer the level of physical injury Lance did, was made clear to have suffered just as much of an injury in the form of PTSD. It can be so easy in books to brush aside mental health and think of it as less damaging/intrusive/overwhelming than a physical injury but that absolutely wasn’t the case here. Lance and Sloan are kind of a second chance romance but not as perhaps you’d conventionally expect. Sloan 100% was not apart from Lance in mentality; he knew he needed to chase his guy down and show him that they were still great together. It was nice to see him work to do that without becoming bullying. He genuinely wanted to show Lance that his fears about dragging Sloan down were unfounded but he wasn’t going to just bulldoze him without any care or concerns for Lance’s very real concerns. It made the romance absolutely beautiful and was what really made their romance truly lovely to read. I’m looking forward to more from these guys!

This is another enjoyable book in the Rockin' W series. This book was a little confusing for me in the beginning, as there were a number of people mentioned right away, but it soon cleared up, centering on the relationship between Lance and Sloan. Both men served in the military and were in a relationship. Then, during a bomb explosion they both experienced, Lance was blinded. He sent Sloan away, feeling that Sloan could do much better than him.
Now, Lance is in a rehabilitation/education program to health and learn new ways to live his life. Sloan never forgot Lance or stopped looking for him. Now, they are both in the same town and finding a way to be together in their new reality. Sloan has his own issues related to the bombing and he suffers from PTSD and grief over a dog that died in that mission.
Most of this book is a journey of mental and emotional healing, as Lance and Sloan find their ways separately and together. It was a little slow to me, as nothing exciting in action occurred until scenes at the end of the book. Still, it felt like home and I really like these kinds of feel-good stories.

“Doing Life” is Book 2 in the ‘Rocking W’ series by BA Tortuga and features wounded warriors Lance and Sloan as they find a way to navigate life and resolve whether they have a future together.
This contemporary gay military and western romance is a wonderful addition to a poignant series. I love this author’s ability to create such vivid characters who have to find a way to overcome significant injuries that have devastated their lives. Lance is slowly learning to cope with his blindness, with the help of his wonderful guide dog, but must decide whether he will accept his former lover back into his life.
This thought-provoking and romantic story depicts some of the many struggles our injured warriors face as they try to integrate back into civilian life and adjust to the high price many have paid for their service. There are beautiful heartfelt scenes along with a few hair-raising adventures that keep one invested in the story. As always, I had lovely warm fuzzy feelings by the end of this tale, and I hope that some of the secondary characters also get their time in the spotlight.

Sloan and Lance were injured in an IED incident that sent Lance to the Rocking W ranch. He severed ties with Sloan believing it was for the best to give Sloane a life without a cripple as Lance is now blind. But Lance was SO wrong. Sloane is now living in New Mexico working as a cop but has searched high and low for Lance and has finally found him at the Rocking W rehab ranch. Sloane's intention is simple and direct: bring Lance back to New Mexico to reestablish their past love. Lance believed letting Sloane go was for the best as he thought sacrificing his happiness meant that Sloane would be happy and content without him in Sloane's life. This is one lovely story of much deserved second chance love where each man is attempting to succeed as individuals and as a joined couple. There are glimpses of other characters at the Rocking W that show hints of future books in this series too. I received a copy of this through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary and honest review.

First of all let me start by saying I haven't read the first in the Rockin’ W series, but I have read enough of this author’s work to be comfortable diving in with the second installment. So, Doing Life can work as a point of entry, but I do feel I would have benefitted from the context in Luke's story. That said, you kind of know what you're getting with ‘wounded warriors’ characters in one of BA’s books, and in that respect Lance and Sloan did not disappoint.
It's really nice to have a sort of established couple in a sort of second chance scenario - these men do not doubt their love for each other, but they need some convincing in their current situation that they're enough. The way in which the resume their relationship is thoughtful and sweet. There's so much mental and emotional (and physical) healing between them that just warms the heart.
I'll most likely go back and read the series opener because I am completely on the hook for Matt's book later down the line…now there's another intriguing character! 3.5* rounded up.

After living through a bomb explosion over seas, Vet Sloan Ferguson would do anything to get back with his lover Lance who also was stuck in the bombing but took off after being released from the hospital. Sloan tracks him down to Texas where Lance is going through therapy at the Rockn’ W ranch, that helps wounded veterans get back on their feet.
Both Lance and Sloan are interesting characters, that really work well off each other, they help each other learn not only life but their ptsd and shortcomings. As they slowly find their way back to loving each other. The side characters are also a vital part of their healing. I highly recommend this book.
Note: The Rockin’ W was built by Luke and his husband Rory, and Luke’s twin brother Matt. The first book in the series is about Luke and Rory’s relationship. And is about Matt as well. So, I would recommend reading that first, but it’s not necessary

I’m enjoying this series and am happy the author is writing more. I loved Lance and Sloan’s book with their very real struggle to adapt to their new normal. I enjoyed seeing other characters from the Rocking W again too.
I liked how the author didn’t sugar coat the difficulties of adjusting after life-changing injuries. I loved how Sloan was determined to rekindle their relationship, despite Lance not wanting to be a burden. I liked that Sloan has his own issues with PTSD, and injuries, and how they help each other move forward, while not holding them back either.
I loved Abby and Maynard. They steal every scene they’re in. Abby is a great friend and support to Lance – the perfect seeing-eye dog, and I liked how Maynard comes into his own.
I liked how Lance slowly moves forward and makes plans for his future, and realises he still has his medic skills after a nasty accident. I liked his housemates too, and the friendships made. I hope they all get their stories told.

Lance and Sloan were lovers and warriors until a bomb blew up their lives. Lance took the brunt of the blast with the loss of his eye sight and various other wounds that left him running away from Sloan. He ran to the Rocking W rehabilitation center to try to learn to live again. What he didn’t know was that Sloan was fast on his heels coming to take Lance home to Santa Fe.
Both of these men were horribly wounded both physically and emotionally. Lance is as skittish as a newborn colt and Sloan slowly but surely wins Lance over again. They both spend time together relearning each other’s differences and disabilities. Lance realizes that he wasn’t the only one who was wounded in the explosion. He’d been so focused on himself that realizing Sloan had been wounded and hurt. That realization was the turning point in their new relationship. They learned each other again. It was sad and sweet and oh so good to see them get their HEA.

This was a really good story set on a Ranch in East Texas which operates a therapeutic and recovery place for service men who have suffered horrific injuries while serving abroad.
It’s the story of Sloan and Lance (Boyfriends) who while serving in Iraq received huge injuries from a bomb blast that left Lance scarred and blind, while Sloan had serious leg injuries and PTSD.
When they returned home after being treated, Lance broke up with Sloan because he didn’t want to be a burden and he sought out the Rocking W Ranch in East Texas and started learning survival skills in his blind existence.
Sloan now working as a Police Officer in his home town, Santa Fe, New Mexico has never accepted Lance’s reasoning about their future.

Fantastic!
This book is amazing! Luke’s ranch, the Rockin’ W is helping wounded vets get back on their feet and Lance is there after getting caught in a bomb explosion. He has broken up with Sloan, thinking he’s too broken. Sloan refuses to give up though and he heads to Texas from his home in Santa Fe with the goal and making Lance see they can still be together! It’s a bumpy road at first but Sloan refuses to give up. He will actually help Lance in addition to getting a bit of help for his own PTSD. I love how the guys at Luke’s ranch form a tight knit family and are there for each other no matter what. A weather related incident at the ranch will scare Sloan but it will get Lance to see that he’s ready to move on, with Sloan, in Santa Fe and it let’s them start to plan their happily ever after!

This was such a beautiful and heartfelt story. Sloan and Lance, both disabled veterans, will absolutely steal your heart. Lance, left completely blind after his service, leaves Sloan because he doesn’t want to be a burden—but Sloan refuses to give up on the man he loves.
Sloan finds Lance at the Rocking W Ranch, where Lance is trying to heal, and a chance meeting rekindles their connection. What follows is a tender journey of friendship, rediscovered love, and deep emotional healing. It’s a story about patience, unconditional love, found family, and learning to trust yourself again.
You’ll be rooting for their happily ever after the whole way through. I truly hope there are more novels coming from the Rocking W Ranch—this one left a lasting impression.

OUTSTANDING! Good story of wounded Veterans dealing with recovering from their wounds and re-entering society. Lance and Sloan are in love. When Lance is blinded he breaks up with Sloan thinking it's what's best with Sloan. Then Sloan follows Lance in what I consider the most romantic move to get his man, ever. Lance's wounds are extremely physical accompanied with PTSD. Sloan has a few physical wounds and PTSD. He also lost his bomb sniffing dog, Riley. These men have to deal with their own trauma as well as each other's. The Rockin W has grown from the ideas and dreams of the first book. It is an amazing tool on the path to healing for our Vets. BA has created a heartbreaking, hearthealing series that requires kleenex while reading. The Vets and town are up to the challenge. Well done! Nice cover art! Matt & Luke (from the 1st book) have turned the Rocking W into a rehab facility for Vets. This book is about Sloan and Lance (lovers during their time in the military until a bombing made Lance blind). Lance separated from Sloan at that point, but many months later Sloan tracked in down at the Rocking W rehab facility where Lance was working on how to live in the world being blind. It's a fun story about a group of guys who are newly disabled, but are figuring out how to still have full lives. There are dogs, horses, and a search & rescue mission at the end.
This book might be slightly better than the first book, probably because it focused on a larger group of interesting characters instead of just the 2 mains. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Book two ups the game in this series with a wonderful book centered around Lance and Sloan. Seems these military men had it all and all planned till a IED incident changed it all, leaving Lance blind. At home Sloan does all he can to reassure Lance he still wants him but Lance feels he is a burden. He leaves to go to a therapy ranch for wounded warriors (Luke's ranch from book one), leaving Sloan. Fortunately Sloan does not go gently into the night as he follows Lance to get his man back. A beautifully written story about healing and acceptance of who we are after a devastating accident. this series deserves an award for its positive portray of individuals living with a disability. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

I loved this book- I loved how quiet and steady Sloan was, and how brave Lance grew to be. Matt, Luke, and Rory are back with their ranch and helping out warriors in need. This book is about two warriors, one getting help from the ranch and the other coming to town to get his one true love back. Lance is in a halfway house that the ranch provides to help wounded soldiers integrate back to civilian life and Sloan has taken a job in the small town in Texas to find Lance and convince him to give them another chance. This book is full of laughter but also quite a bit of heartbreak, Lance and Sloan go through many ups and downs but with the help of their friends they are able to rekindle that love they’ve always had for each other. Can’t wait to read more about the town and the people in it. ❤️😁

Sloan & Lance served and loved together until a bombing ended their careers and their relationship. Sloan gives Lance enough time to begin to heal until he follows him to the Rockin' W to begin the slow process of healing and working their way back to their new 'normal.' Sloans steadfast love for Lance was magical in the way no matter what he will stick by his man and together they will move forward. This one was slightly better than its predacessor because we saw more of the people of the rehab team and its tenants, leading us to want more from this series in the future. A well-rounded story showing with time and support you are able to come back to one another.

Both have a lot of tough times slowly they reconnect and are able to help each other heal in the middle of some of the most descriptive and realistic beautiful spaces I've ever read about.
