VICTORIA HOUSE (THE HAUNTED HEART SERIES #2) BY DENISE MONCRIEF
Victoria House is set in Hill County, Arkansas, a very believable and realistic world of the author’s own creation. Hill County is an area steeped in mystery and suspense. A place where long buried secrets and legends are resurrected and where a nearly century old, unsolved murder takes on a life of its own. A place where the occasional paranormal bump in the night for some, equals excitement instead of trepidation, and on top of all of that, a place where romance blossoms and grows amongst the blood and gore of local crime scenes. Hill County could be any small town county anywhere in the world. You know the one, where everyone knows everyone else’s business and the residents can’t resist gossiping about every little thing.
It is a world where uttering the words, “Victoria House,” can strike fear and much more in the hearts of locals and law enforcement officials alike. Officers like Crime Scene Specialist Josh McCord of the Hill County’s Sheriff’s Department and lifelong resident. He has a reputation as a drunk and as a ladies’ man, having had a relationship with almost every woman in the county at one time or another and who is notorious for nothing thinking that anything is wrong with that.
Character Victoria “Tori” Downing inherited Victoria House from her grandmother and has owned it for six years sight unseen that is, until one terrifying experience with the Arkansas State Crime Lab, her former employer. That experience forced her to seek a job as a Crime Scene Specialist with Hill County’s Sheriff Department. She makes the move to the county as well, leaving her former life behind in order to start a anew in Hill County. It is in the new law enforcement setting that she meets her boss, Sheriff Halsey. He’s a career law enforcement man that terrifies her. She also meets the all too serious, cold, arrogant, grates on her nerves, Lt. Mitchell Grayson.
From the moment, Tori arrives in Hill County and first lays eyes on her inherited mansion, it’s one mystery after another that tests the limits of her skills, patience and even her sanity. She comes to realize the only person she can rely on to have her back is the same man she’s trying to keep at arm’s length on a professional level. Tori and Gray work side by side as they not only try to solve the county’s crimes, but the mysteries associated with them as well as the mystery that surrounds Victoria House.
Author Moncrief has created and eclectic cast of small town characters that any reader will be able to identify with. This gives them all credibility and a sense of realism as the story and plot suck the reader right in and will refuse to let them go until the last word. Some of the characters, the readers of this book will adore and fall in love with and some of the characters the readers will come to despise and even hate, only to find out several are not who they first appear to be.
A few examples of the eclectic cast of characters include Tori Downing’s own ancestors: Victoria Hamilton for whom the mansion is named after and her husband, Alfred Hamilton who is described as being the “Baron of Hill County” until his death in 1924.
A few other characters include: Deputy Lucy Kimbrough, the county’s best or worst gossip, depending on your point of view. Fred Haskins has a way of owning people in the county in one form or fashion or another. This reviewer could relate to many of the author’s complex and well thought out characters in that I have known people in various towns and states over the years of my life that could be the characters in this book. That made them highly realistic, believable, complex and multi-faceted. They are exactly the kind of characters that can draw the reader right in and hold their attention.
Author Moncrief is brilliant in that she not only brings her characters to life on the pages of this book, but allows them to tell the story each from their own varied perspectives. It is yet another aspect of this author’s brilliance and a part of the grand masterpiece that leaves the reader and this reviewer unable to set the book down for a single second.
With breathless anticipation and the need to know more, this reviewer continued reading the book all in one setting by the seat of her pants through all of the twists and turns and through all of the surprises this reviewer never saw coming until they smacked me right upside the head.
Author Moncrief also has a unique way with words and prose that only master storytellers have achieved through countless hours of trial and error. This author does not mince words and does not need fancy, elaborate words to force the reader to see the story in the mind’s eye. To feel as if he or she is not only seeing the story play out first hand, but feels every emotion that the characters do. She further utilizes her words carefully and with great thought to provoke the reader into believing he or she is utilizing all of his or her senses along with the characters, thereby giving the reader a unique experience and rare experience. One that will leave the reader hooked and needing more of the story at the book’s conclusion. It certainly did just that for this reviewer!
Victoria House is by God, the type of book most professional reviewers pray for, search for and even yearn for. It is a true delight to the senses and for the imagination as well. It has been rare that I have found talent of this magnitude during my career of professionally reviewing books. But now that I have, I am hooked and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I thank my lucky stars that I chose to review this book based on a friend’s recommendation. At the time I began reading, I refused to look at the book cover or the synopsis as I wanted to allow the story to speak to me on its own merit if it could minus any bias from the cover or synopsis may have caused and boy did it speak to me, as I said before.
It was only after reading the book in its entirety that I chose to return to Amazon to check both out and once again I was amazed. The cover was simple and yet elegant in its shroud of mystery. It is thought provoking and the house, oh my, the house! The cover artist was brilliant in that he or she created the Hamilton Mansion very similar to what this reviewer imagined it would look like as I read the book. I highly commend the cover artist for creating a book cover of the same caliber as the book itself.
The book description is also wonderfully done. It gave this reader just enough information to convince me to purchase and download it without giving away all of the good stuff.
I highly recommend reading this book and the entire 7 book Haunted Hearts Series. The total story is just that good!

Great series. Easy to read. This book allows you to finally figure out Gray more than book one. I gave it only four stars because I felt the ending was rushed and pretty predictable. The plot was well thought out with plenty of twist and turns with some mystery thrown in. The characters could be anyone from a small southern community which makes them relatable. I was disappointed that you don't really get all of your questions from book one answered in book two, I'm hoping I will get more answers in book three.
I liked this book a lot. It's good to have a mystery and haunting in one book. The story was good and the characters were very believable. I did not find a dull spot in the book and was anxious to keep reading till the end. I am now reading the next book in the series and I think it'll be just as good.
I loved, loved, loved the first book in this series, so I was anxious to sink my teeth into this one. It doesn't disappoint!! The story picks up toward the end of the action in book 1, Laurel Heights, which actually had me confused for a few chapters until I figured out the timeline. One of my favorite parts is that I'm now seeing everything through Gray's eyes, and I did always think he was an attractive sort in book 1. I actually wanted him with Laurel in the beginning of that book, so I was happy to see the continuation of this series was about him and that he might get some romance.
However, his and Tori's relationship starts off rather rocky, to say the least. Tori has a lot of secrets and is afraid to get close to anyone at her new job. Gray is using Tori to help him investigate the disappearance of the Crenshaws because she is the only person he can trust doesn't have an agenda. I thought the author did an excellent job of showing the slow buildup of their attraction to one another, and I was quickly in the camp of wanting them to see that they were made for each other!
The ongoing questions left over from Laurel Heights are still being dealt with here. Who killed Laurel's brother? And another mystery comes to light as a local couple (the Crenshaws) who live across the lake from Tori's inherited house go missing, and Tori sees some fishy stuff going on. When the man (a known wife abuser) is later found murdered, and the wife still missing, presumed either dead or on the run after murdering her husband, Gray and Tori have their hands full trying to solve this murder. Add in stolen evidence and a host of suspects, and I never quite knew who could be trusted.
On top of all that, there are the paranormal parts that I really enjoyed. The creepiness of the ghosts of Victoria House is great. What happened in the room that will not open? And why do the spirits seem to hate Tori so much?
Another winner! A great mystery with a strong romance plot and an enjoyable read! Highly recommended!
What an amazing addition to the Haunted Hearts Series. This story completely captivated me from the moment I started reading. Author Denise Moncrief knows just how to lay a web mystery. This story is filled with twist and turns that I never saw coming. If you thought, Denise’s last book was a roller coaster ride you better buckle up for another one.
Vitoria ‘Tori’ Downing just thought she was running from a past she desperately wanted to escape. Little did she know that she was running right into a hornets nest she did not even see coming. From the moment Tori arrived at the Victoria house her life is turned upside down. I actually got chills reading the events that took place. Tori is one tough and smart cookie throughout this entire book.
In book one we are introduced to Lt. Mitchell ‘Gray’ Grayson. I can say in that book I was not a huge fan of Gray’s. He seemed like an arrogant jerk. Well let me tell you, I absolutely loved him in this book. Learning Gray’s past and what made him who he is today was great. This man has so many layers to him that you just cannot love him.
Gray and Tori are thrown together to try to solve the mystery of who killed Jared Crenshaw. Only problem is that the murders and mystery just keep piling up.
If you love a good mystery laced with paranormal activity that keeps you on your toes you will love this book. I absolutely love how Denise Moncrief layers her books with so much detail. She slowly lets the web unravel that your jaw drops when you reach the end.
I cannot wait for book three. I am hoping that we get to see more of Gray and Tori there story has so much more that could be told. I also want to get to know Josh McCord. This man has a past I want to know more about.
The second novel in the Haunted Heart series. We see detective Grayson Mitchell and Josh McCord back investigating yet another murder. Somehow this is all tied to the meth labs that was in the caves at the first book Laurel Heights. Tori Downing is an officer with the Fairview police dept. who is a crime scene specialist. She and Grayson have developed a romantic relationship hoping that it wouldn't ruin their working one. Tori has also inherited her family's mansion called Victoria House. Another haunted mansion that needs Grayson and McCord to help investigate the paranormal in the home. What secrets does Victoria house hold? Will the truth behind Victoria Hamilton's murder be finally solved?
A quick, easy read that I didn't really have high expectations for, but those expectations were still not fulfilled. This is the second in a series, and evidently the mystery of what is causing the various hauntings continues throughout, because the book ends with the main characters vowing to find the murderer of the woman who was behind this one, and from references to the first one it sounds like that one was never wound up either.
Then there was the fact that the villain was pretty easy to spot and one of my least favorite stereotypes as well - the "masculine" woman who gives our heroine (who of course is all "real" woman) the creeps at their first encounter, and has evidently been driven insane by her desperation for a man. I actually did buy the first one in the since it was only 99¢, but I'm not sure whether I'll bother reading it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Great series. In this second book we get Gray and Tori's story while still dealing with mysterious questions from Laurel Heights. I again couldn't put this book down. Gray and Tori's relationship isn't an instant one. They work up to it through out the book. I have to say Great Job Denise Moncrief. You have a great future ahead of you.
Romance, Paranormal, Mystery ..... This Book Brings It Together
I really enjoyed this book...and I will be reading more from this author in future. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great book.
