The 1000 Souls #1

Sacrifice The Living

Rate this book
"Another attacker, his unshaven face gaunt and filthy, noticed the videographer and turned toward the camera, his expression a snarl of hunger and anger."

A horrific disease threatens to turn the entire human race into the stuff of nightmares in Michael Andre McPherson's heart-pounding debut novel, "Sacrifice the Living." This first book in The 1,000 Souls series is an epic saga full of blood-sucking mobs, a desperate bid for survival, and a climactic showdown that changes everything.

As fewer people show up for the day shift at work, the stock and housing markets crash, and the whole city of Chicago seems to emerge only at night, Bertrand Allan realizes something is very wrong.

Amid rumors of vampires, he learns the horrifying truth: a disease that infects people with parasites is turning the masses into "rippers"-semihumans who must drink blood in order to feed the parasites. It's spreading by way of "Vlad the Scourge," who is determined to create a new world by infecting more than half the human population with the parasite.

Building up a citizen army, Bertrand sets out to destroy "Vlad the Scourge" in a violent showdown that readers won't soon forget.

Great story that I really got into. It takes place during an outbreak that creates Human/Vampire hybrids. The story is shown through the eyes of one of the main characters as he transforms from en everyday computer geek to the leader of the resistance. Along the way he meets interesting groups and learns more about what he’s fighting. The story has plenty of action and twists and turns along the way. I can’t wait to start book 2 and for book 3 to come out!

I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway:

This book is a "vampire" tale with a scientific twist- blood-drinking is the result of parasites that can also repair and maintain the host body. It's a concept that I really enjoyed, though I was somewhat less keen on the mystical 1000 souls idea that dogs the "good guys". In general this is an enjoyable story of an every-man forced into challenging circumstances and rising to meet new heights he never expected to deal with.

One note as a raging spelling pedant, there are a few typos (at least in my edition) which distracted me- though fully aware that's my own issue!

This book is the first in a series, and I would definitely be curious to check out some of the others (once my book-buying ban is over of course!)

Nice premise, good flow, little wanting in secondary character development. Not sure I'll continue series b/c SPOILER ALERT Bert becomes a ripper and I like when I can follow a character across the series
