Micheal Maxwell has traveled the globe on the lookout for strange sights, sounds, and people. His adventures have taken him from the Jungles of Ecuador and the Philippines to the top of the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge, and from the cave dwellings of Native Americans to The Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler’s Eagles Nest! He’s always looking for a story to tell and interesting people to meet.
Micheal Maxwell was taught the beauty and majesty of the English language by Bob Dylan, Robertson Davies, Charles Dickens, and Leonard Cohen.
Mr. Maxwell has traveled the globe, dined with politicians, rock stars, and beggars. He has rubbed shoulders with priests and murderers, surgeons and drug dealers, each one giving him a part of themselves that will live again in the pages of his books.
Micheal Maxwell has found a niche in the mystery, suspense, genre with The Cole Sage Series that gives readers an everyman hero, short on vices, long on compassion, and a sense of fair play, and the willingness to risk everything to right wrongs. The Cole Sage Series departs from the usual, heavily sexual, profanity-laced norm and gives readers character-driven stories, with twists, turns, and page-turning plot lines.
Micheal Maxwell writes from a life of love, music, film, and literature. Along with his lovely wife and travel partner, Janet, he lives in a small town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
Travel along with teenager, Chant, as he mounts his time machine and pedals to places in the past where he'll meet historical figures and members of his own family. A truly delightful story. After discovering this machine in a secret place in the 150-year-old building his family moved into, he is off on intriguing adventures. Will he return home safely each time?!?
It was truly refreshing to read and engaging story that had some depth to it. It will likely never win awards but it's candor and simplicity was really appreciated.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It was my first attempt at a novel from Michael Maxwell, who tells the story of the main character, Chant Baker a young man living in the years 2019 who has moved with his parents and younger sister in Sonora (California) in an older building and happen to find in a hidden basement a “Time Bicycle" .
This whole book felt to me as a time travel teenager adventure, nicely written with a fun atmosphere.
Even if I was not in the target group, I have enjoyed reading it, while time travelling through it….
I normally would not pick up a book with anything to do with time travel, however it was suggested that I read it. Now, after finishing the book, I loved it! As I read, I felt as though I was with Chant on his journey. I am from the valley of California, so when the authors wrote about the small mountain town of Sonora, I could picture it. I know exactly the spot. Chant's hippie parents remind me of people I know. I loved when Chant went back in time to see General Lee, Shakespeare, and Samuel Clemons (aka Mark Twain). It was neat to imagine how Shakespeare would react to the future of 2015. I also love how Chant went back to his mother's favorite birthday. Like I said before, the authors do a great job making the reader feel as though they were in the story by using such vivid description. Chant was wise for his age and very curious about people. It is a easy to read book. Once you start reading it you don't want to put it down.
Refreshing take on time travel. Interesting characters. My only criticism and it's a small one, is the constant use of the explanation mark which I felt was overused. It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story. I will look forward to reading the next book in the saga.
The Time Pedaler by Micheal Maxwell Like style of writing with this author so didn't even go into seeing what it was about. It's a time travel and it's in hippie years in CA. Love the old house they buy and the all the hidden rooms and treasures they find. Chant is now in public schools so different than his last commune school. He adjusts and sets out to find out more about a letter he found. Librarian is so helpful. He understands with the journal what the machine is all about. You peddle it, set coordinates and you're on your way. He discovers he can spend hours at a new location but really only be gone a minute from present day. Love the research he does to decide where he wants to go.... His sister has no problem adjusting to the new life, she makes friends easier than Chant.. Love the store his parents set up, they live upstairs from that. Especially liek the people he meets and the difference they make in the world. Very descriptive scenes and making sense of things. Great read, have read so many time travel it's not one of my favorite genres any longer but this book has so much more to offer the reader. Terrifying moments when he's not at home and the saga continues in the next book...
This story took me back to my younger days! Chant Baker, a 15 year old growing up in Sonora California in the 21st century, finds in the basement of the family’s 150 year old building, a weird machine. Along with the machine Chant finds a bevy of old documents along with a treasure trove of crystals. From the documents, Chant works out that the crystals power the machine along with pedal power of the person mounting the tricycle style machine, and it is a time machine, able to take him back in years to historic moments. This makes for an entertaining read of exploration and adventure that all youngsters and many of the more mature age readers will thoroughly enjoy. In this day and age of political gamesmanship it is refreshing to be able to unwind and enjoy a boys own (or girls own) journal type story! Moses
A clever idea, less than perfectly realized. The premise is that an inventor friend of Mark Twain developed a pedal-powered time machine which is found in the present day by a young Californian, along with a ledger describing the machine and some tantalizing hints to a death and a disappearance. For me, however, much of the narrative was more plodding than riveting, and some of the time travel incidents did not ring true. In particular, a trip to Shakespeare's England has unbelievable dialogue, with the protagonist using basically modern American English, without causing a stir, and Shakespeare himself speaking in a way that is not consistently true to his day. This was a freebie introduction to an ongoing series which I will not be following.
There are so many theories about manipulating time. Consequences of returning to present that has completely changed because you killed a moth 500 years ago. This story is all about a curious teen's desire to explore for personal reasons and leaves all the conjecture behind, and is well written from a teen's mind. I'm off to get the next installment to see what he gets up to.
I enjoyed reading the book, but it seemed too simple minded for me, a “well” traveled reader of time travel stories, books and movies. ( Sorry if I seem to be patting myself on my back, I do not mean to be patronizing, it’s just how I felt reading this novel). As I said in the headline this is an excellent introduction to this category of stories.
I enjoyed this tale of a reckless 15 year old boy (of course, he’s reckless!) who discovers a time machine in an old, locked basement. Anachronisms are mostly ignored, dates are loose, and happy coincidences abound but overall this is still a very entertaining book! Suitable for youth or adults.
I've always been easily confused when it comes to grasping the details in time travel books. I didn't have that problem with this story. I loved that the main character is so young, but also so aware. Good story!
When I was a little girl, I dreamed of having a time machine so that I could meet my heroes of history. Reading this book helped me to realize that dream.
This was a good YA adventure book. Listening to the book, it seemed like some of the chapters started in present tense then switched to past tense, although we are following Chant as he journeys.
I think it drags a bit and has more telling than showing, which caused my continuous stopping and restarting.
I liked that Chant wanted to visit his grandfather, who he has never met, yet, it’s odd that he uses his real name - and even meets his mom, when she was a teenager.
I didn’t find a climax, which indicates this is “just a story”.
There are far worse out there, so for an Indie book, it’s better than most.
A thoroughly enjoyable read! Chant is an inquisitive 15 yr old, recently arrived in Sonora with his family. While cleaning out the basement of the old building them bought, he finds a secret room. In the room is a mysterious machine. As unbelievable as it seems, this machine allowed time travel. Chant was able to talk to the likes of Robert E Lee and Shakespeare. No mystery or intrique and no suspense, just an interesting book I didn't want to put down.
