I’ve been writing for many years, but only recently did I start publishing. Soon after that I was lucky enough to land a job as the Editorial Assistant for the Ralls County Herald-Enterprise. Now someone actually pays me to write, which is pretty cool. I graduated Wellsville Middletown High School in 1993, and after a short stint in the Army I traveled, mostly in the mid-west, though I've been as far north as Seattle and as far south as Pensacola. I haven’t done anything amazing like single-handedly save an entire tribe of Ugandan children from Ebola or serve overseas and save my entire squad from a tribe of Ugandan children with Ebola, but I love a good story, whether I’m reading one, or writing one.

Along with the independently published American Revenant zombie apocalypse series set in and around Hannibal, Missouri I dabble in horror, thrillers, and science-fiction, mostly in short stories. I’ve also written several short screenplays with plans to eventually script a feature-length film.

I live in Hannibal, MO with my wife, two daughters and one dog.

This novel hits the ground running with enough action to keep me actively engaged from the first few pages on. There was never a dull moment, either in terms of what was going on, or in terms of the word choices that Davis used. The dialogue between characters is realistic and seamless, unlike the extended monologues or useless banter-driven conversations that frequently are used to kill time or narrate occurrences in place of actual description. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that Davis is able to so completely describe the various elements of the world his characters live in from how much they know (or don’t know) about the zombie plague and how the infection started, to how long they have known one another and been in the town. If I don’t read the next book in what (I both assume and hope) will be a series, I will never forgive myself.

I've read my share of zombie books, but this one stands out amongst my favorite. I was hooked right from the get go. Unlike most authors of the genre, John L. Davis IV actually knows what he's talking about. That's why I enjoyed it so much. The characters have a plan that makes sense, even when they happen upon a zombie Mark Twain (read it, you'll understand).

American Revenant is an easy read where you can get behind the people that are trying to survive marauding bands of outlaws, hungry zombies, and mother nature herself. It's a great ride and def worth reading. Your life may depend on it!

Who is the real enemy in the zombie apocalypse?

I loved this short story and was immediately saddened when it came to finishing the read. The ending piqued my interest enough that I felt immediately distraught when I found out it was the last page. Survival of the most prepared and survival against a human antagonist. There is a bit of head hopping in POV that left me thinking who am I reading from, but it's otherwise a fast paced read during the climatic parts. The characters were believable and the world was dreadfully accurate. A great read for any zombie apocalypse lover. I especially enjoyed the little bits of t.v innuendos thrown in. Particularly the one about flowers. That one left me laughing.

Good beginning to a new seies

I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I didn't like was it's too short! Just as it really gets rolling, it ends. And on a cliffhanger, no less.
That being said, I enjoyed what was here enough to want to continue.
The story centers around a group of survivalists who are planning to leave their hometown due to the increasing danger from both zombies and other survivors.
There is plenty of zombie mayhem, but, as so often happens in post-apocalyptic stories, the biggest threat is from other humans.
I really liked the characters, and could easily identify with their fears in this situation.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes shows like The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

A full blown tale of what the common man is capable of when the time comes, it explores all aspects of how human nature differs in us all... one group of men become hero's and others become villains who pray upon those weaker then themselves... Mr Davis captures a very accurate depiction of what the average Joe must do to protect his family and those he loves... added bonus is you may learn a few things to help you survive if you're ever in their place..

It was good.

I do like where this story is going. It was slow start little bumpy. Characters little plain didn't really feel any emotions with them but for Dean. Started picking up when Dean went to ring the bell's until the end.
So it needed more details, character development other than that it was good. First book in any series is always little bumpy.

Great Read!

I really enjoyed this story! It was a bit different than other zombie stories in the genre. The story seemed to focus more on the survivors and their survival than the zombies. It was a good story and I recommend the book!

Could use some tighter editing [similarly spelled words in place of the right term, etc]. The story was pretty interesting but I can do without the F-bombs and other language. There are ways to imply cursing without actual cursing. "Oh, but it's more realistic." Really? It's a book with zombies- realism not included.
I believe the author is a talented writer but considering the amount of things I have available to read I don't need to add books with limited vocabularies to the list so this was my last foray into Davis' writing.

You think you're ready for the zombie apocalypse?

So did they. Very interesting reading how a group of people react to and survive not only a complete breakdown of society, but also nuclear destruction and zombies.

I'll be keeping my eye out for further installments!

Good book

As I read this book it started off slow but as it went on it picked up. Reading how a group of survivors find a way to live. Read again as part of Omnibus that just came out. Loved it.

Good

Lots of planning and preparation go into surviving a zombie attack. A group of people band together to survive not just the dead, but the living as well.
