First Edition stated. Little, Brown & Co., Boston 1985. Good/Good dust jacket condition. THE SOUTH AFRICAN QUIRT IS A CLASSIC TALE OF A BOY'S RITE OF PASSAGE, DRAMATICALLY HEIGHTENED BY THE TERRIFYING STRUGGLE THE BOY, NATTY DUNSTON, MUST UNDERGO AT THE HANDS OF HIS TYRANNICAL FATHER....
Although this autobiographical story lacks the typical Edmonds ending, it is so well written and accurately depicts the father and son relationship of that generation. I enjoyed it and was happy to pick up another signed first edition for the collection.
Apparently I'm the only person to have ever read this and ever to review it...so here goes. It's going on 3 years since I've read it, but I remember it being a charming coming-of-age story. Same layout as usual, but I definitely didn't hate it.
This was a short and very compelling book, although it might have been meant for younger readers. I about cried at the end. It's a very old-fashioned book, and probably won't appeal to many of my contemporaries; I just liked the cover and picked it up at the library. But I'm glad I read it.
