Sophie Rose went missing eighteen years ago. Now the town think they may have found her body, when they were looking for someone else's.

During the hottest summer on record, the small English town of Wymere is holding a summer fete, children play happily with their families and all is well, until a woman reports that her husband and son have gone missing. As a panicked search sweeps the fete, the missing man comes out of the woods covered in blood screaming, 'I don't know what I've done'. He doesn't know what has happened, but his son is nowhere to be seen. Deep in the Wymere woods, a dead tree grows from a mound of black dirt set in the middle of an old, dried-up reservoir. This is where Sergeant Tony Thorne finds the missing boy. And with it, he may have solved a mystery that has plagued the town for almost two decades, and discovered an evil that has lain dormant for centuries.

This is my first book by Axl Malton, and it definitely had me hooked right from the start. Dark, twisty, and disturbing this book will have you guessing and shocked in the end.

Sophie Rose was the love of Sargeant Tony Thorne's life when she went missing 18 years ago, presumed dead Tony finally went on with his life but he never forgot and neither did his wife who still lives in her shadow to this day. During a celebration in the English town of Wymere a women reports her son and husband have gone missing. During the search her missing husband comes stumbling out of the woods covered in blood screaming, "I don't know what I've done." As they search the woods looking for the missing boy, a body is found, around a dead tree, growing in the middle of black dirt. Is it the body of the young boy? Or has Tony discovered the evil that has laid dormant for centuries.

I love a good twisty thriller, and I also love a good horror story, this once seemed to be two books in one. I really enjoyed it, but at times it seemed like I was reading two entirely different stories. Both plots were enjoyable, but I also think they could have been better if each story was expounded upon in their own books. The ending will leave you shook.

Thank you Netgalley and Wicked House Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the historical backstory of the witch trials playing a role in the legends and the curse present in the English town of Wymere. The multiple POV characters were distinctive and entertaining, and I enjoyed all the scary scenes and the intricate plotting that wove them together. I highly recommend this book for horror fans and those looking to add a spooky read to their TBR for Halloween.

Not typically a genre i'd read but i loved the synopsis. Started off with a bit of a creepy (and intriguing) storyline with some great characters to follow along. Then turned into a "stranger things" type feel and got more and more weird in the last fifty pages.
The ending felt a bit over the top and anti climatic. I guess with the way the story was heading, I expected a bit more.

Things I WAS worried about in the woods: getting lost, dangerous animals, no indoor plumbing.

Things I'm worried about in the woods NOW: evil murder trees. That's it. That's the whole list.

But, listen... it was WORTH IT. The Devil's Tree has a deliciously wicked way of taking root under your skin and making you feel truly haunted. Yes, horror readers will love this book, but it's equally appealing to those who are even more unnerved by the horrors that humans can submit one another to all on their own.

In conclusion: leave the hiking boots on the shelf and curl up (safely indoors) with The Devil's Tree instead. There are likely fewer spiders and a MUCH lower chance of possession. (But never zero.) And, if you do head into the woods, stay away from that one tree... you know the one.

A massive thank you to Axl Malton for this ARC- what a wonderful adventure this book has been!

The Devil’s Tree by Axl Mallon is a folk horror novel steeped in eerie atmosphere and witchy folklore. As my first experience with Mallon’s writing, I found myself drawn into the story’s haunting setting and the intrigue surrounding the titular tree and its connections to witchcraft. The novel effectively blends elements of folklore with horror, and the suspense is maintained through much of the narrative, keeping me engaged.

However, despite its strengths, I found some aspects of The Devil’s Tree problematic. One particular issue that stood out was the inclusion of random animal cruelty, which I found jarring and unnecessary. The harm done to a kitten at the end of Chapter 30, in particular, left me feeling unsettled in a way that detracted from my overall enjoyment of the book. While horror often pushes boundaries, these moments felt gratuitous and disconnected from the core narrative.

Character development was another area where I felt the novel faltered. While characters like Tony were clearly intended to have depth, they ultimately came across as flat. Many of the characters felt more like archetypes or stereotypes commonly seen in horror stories, rather than fully realized individuals. This diminished my emotional investment in their journeys and made certain plot points feel predictable.

That said, the folk horror elements, particularly the ties to witches and ancient lore, were where the book truly shined. Mallon successfully taps into the chilling, slow-burn style of folk horror that I enjoy, and the atmosphere of the novel was eerie and immersive.

Overall, The Devil’s Tree was a mixed experience for me. While I appreciated the setting and the folk horror aspects, the lack of character depth and unnecessary cruelty detracted from my enjoyment. I would rate this book a solid 3 out of 5 stars—an intriguing premise that didn’t quite live up to its potential but still offered enough eerie moments to keep me reading.

Thank you to Axl Malton and Wicked House Publishing for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

A dead tree is somehow growing from a mound of earth in the centre of a dried up lake.
A child has gone missing in the woods, and he isn’t the first. Something evil is taking root in the town…
The Devil’s Tree is an action packed supernatural horror, with lots of different themes blended together in a really skilful way that keeps you guessing right until the end. I was totally absorbed in every plot line, and I loved being able to jump between different characters and sub-plots: a fantastic way to build the world and develop the characters brilliantly as well as keeping the suspense there.
I think this is Axl’s best book to date, and there are so many elements in there a lot of people will find their niche here:
Missing children
Witchcraft/Supernatural
Folk horror
Revenge
Torture
Crime thriller
Some gore
Psychological thriller

This is well worth a read, I was hooked!

I truly enjoyed this however I hate reading about animal abuse. I really don't understand how it was relevant to the story except to show us that the bad guy was really twisted. Just my 2 cents but I do not think it was necessary for the story, but besides that I really enjoyed I would recommend for a spooky read.

The Devil’s Tree by Axl Malton

One single tree grows from a mound of dirt in the center of a lake…but the tree and it’s branches are dead. The Devil’s Tree. The Tree of Death.

Tony Thorne is the sergeant in small town Wymere. Eighteen years ago, the love of his life vanished. Now he’s married to a woman living in the shadow of his lost love. Memories and determination to find the truth of her disappearance come rushing in when a young boy disappears during a town festival.

This book has it all…horror, lore, gore, and more. I loved that it was like a horror novel AND a thriller intertwined. It’s the first book I’ve read of Axl Malton’s, but most definitely won’t be the last!

My thanks to the author and Wicked House Publishing for the digital ARC.

Tony Thorne is a small town sergeant with a mundane day to day job, as nothing important happens in the close knit community of Wymere. When he was a young man however, his sweetheart Sophie Rose disappeared one evening and he was the last one to be seen with her. All the sad memories come back to him and the rest of the town, when a young kid disappears during the annual fete. This act opens up old wounds and there is a sense of urgency to find the child in the dark, cursed woods.

The first part is what gripped me. Two disappearances - 18 years apart -there needs to be a connection, and it is up to Thorne to solve the current case and prove his innocence in the first one. And I think that would have been a splendid book. But unfortunately, in the second half the book turns to the gore horror genre, with a trip into zombieland and not in a good way I'm afraid. I feel that it was superfluous and that the book would have benefited from keeping with the first storyline only. I usually like a good horror story, but I think I was taken aback as it wasn't what I expected after reading the first part.

I would recommend this book to readers who like unforeseen plot twists with a taste of gory horror.

Book Review
Title: The Devil's Tree
Author: Axl Malton
Book Rating: 4 Stars
Genre: Horror

The Devil's Tree by Axl Malton was a really gripping novel that has made me thirsty for horror again. I've been in the Indie Horror scene for about 2 years now, but the last few months I've only really been reading fantasy. This was definitely the book I needed to get back into indie horror.

The Devil's Tree follows a whole town as fathers start unaliving their kids and not remember doing it. The main character is a police officer who is trying to unravel this mystery while also trying to solve one from his past.

This book was gripping, relentless, and bloody. I was white-knuckled the entire time I was reading it. It only took me a couple of sittings to get through the book as the pages flew by. The short chapters were a breath of fresh air that aided in the pacing of the book.

The only thing that would bring me out of the book from time to time could be summed up as me being an American and the author being British (if I'm wrong about the country don't hate me, Axl!). It's probably due to how our Grammar is different.

The Devil's Tree was just an all-around great read with believable characters, no-holds-barred action and gore, and a fitting conclusion. If you want a quick and scary horror read, The Devil's Tree just might be the book you are looking for.

Wow! Let's just start with that. Wow! As usual, I knew almost nothing about this book going into it (I generally prefer it that way). But if I had any expectations at the start, this story surpassed them by a few hundred miles at least.

Malton's writing is superb. The story switches between multiple characters and by the end I could tell which character's POV I was reading from just due to the tone. Each character had a very unique voice. I also very much enjoyed the pace of the book as it sat somewhere between medium and fast paced which I've always thought was appropriate for a horror novel as it leaves time for dread to build but not enough time for the reader to really figure out what might happen next. The dialogue felt very natural and many of the main characters were very relatable.

The plot, though, is where this book really shines the most. Everything that happened just left me eager to turn the page and find out more. I love a story that makes me wonder what is happening and why. And boy did this book deliver!

I'm sure there is more that I could say about Malton's novel, but I wouldn't want to spoil anything for future readers. Just trust me when I say this one is worth picking up! You definitely won't be able to put it down once you do!

Skimmed some, not very connected

This was really two separate stories that were basically not connected at all but forced together by proximity, literally, at the very end. Either of the stories - one supernatural and the other psychological - could have been told without the other and without losing anything, even character-motivation-wise. If it was going to be 2 stories in 1, I feel the effort would have been better spent on Ragan’s story/history than Sophie Rose. For example, more discovery of what happened to Ragan by Jane rather than just a single story told once, or via connected past events chapters through Ragan’s perspective.

The writing was edited well but not very compelling. I skimmed through some of the descriptions and dialogue because they didn’t grab my attention or interest and reading them fully slowed the pacing too much for me. From a horror perspective, it was more gory than scary with the typical bulk of violence being visited on women and the blame for the violence falling on them as well, very stereotypical male gaze horror writing.

It was a quick read, not completely awful, and filled a hole where I didn’t know what to read next, but I probably wouldn’t read anything by this author again.

3.5⭐ rounded to a 4⭐!

**I received a review copy of this book**

I want to start by saying that horror is not my preferred genre, so perhaps that has influenced my review slightly. So please take it with a grain of salt

I thought the book started off really strong. The prologue and first opening scene were great at setting us up for the story. Very easy to imagine and picture. Especially the confrontation at the festival. (I live in a small town so the attitudes of the different characters seemed very familiar lol).

I also enjoyed the folktale/historical aspect of it. I've heard about the Witch Trials from the mid 1600s before, so that peaked my interest a bit more.

I honestly wasn't completely prepared for the level of gore in the later half of the book. It came across as gratuitous, but again, maybe I felt that way because this wasn't my typical read. I also could have done without the kitten scene if I'm being honest.

While I wish we had more character development outside of our lead character, overall the story was well paced/presented. And while not for me personally, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for someone who was looking for a book that matches this!

Excited to read another book by Wicked House Publishing
This is my first book read by this author (Axl Malton) and it is sooo good
This book is insane in a good way, it starts off with so many things that get you hooked and needing to read more. This book was dark-atmospheric with thriller, horror and some mystery vibes as well.
I loved the historical elements of the witch trials, that was so cool. The town legends were great and definitely played a big part in this book. Dad's in this town look out!!
Well written, in multiple POV. Great characters, even though you are not gonna like some of them they are important to the story and others you are gonna like a lot and be rutting for them.
This book feels like it kinda be 2 books into 1, it has present-day an also a cold case element also. I really can't say too much about this because I don't want to ruin the book for you. The ending wow....
This is a must-read book, and what better time to read it than now in October -Spooky Season. I don't know about you but I love reading horror books all year round but they just hit harder during this time of Year!!! :)

The Devil’s Tree is a horror novel set in rural contemporary England. This book has multiple storylines and is told from multiple POVs. While the setting is modern, the events reach back into several points in the area’s past.

Sergeant Tony Thorne is a police officer in the rural town. He’s called into action when a child goes missing during a local fair. In doing so, he stumbles into a mystery that has plagued both him and the town for almost two decades and discovers an evil that has lain dormant for centuries.

The author weaves together various characters and storylines into an excellent novel. The characters are unique and believable. There are some serious twists and turns as the book progresses, but each is realistic. Through the various POVs, I had no idea what to expect or what was coming next. Each of the twists was wholly unexpected, but each made sense. I enjoyed being swept along with the story as it unfolded. While it employed some aspects of the supernatural, it didn’t require that the reader suspend common sense. Overall a great horror and suspense novel!

I saw The Devil’s Tree posted in a group and I downloaded it simply because I liked the cover. This ended up being a great decision.

This story is packed with action and a lot happening, yet it manages to keep things clear and engaging without becoming confusing. A large mix of characters and multiple points of view could easily become overwhelming in books, but the author wrote this story in such a way that it's easy to follow.

It was the perfect companion for my long car trip today—kept me completely invested the entire time. I couldn’t wait to see what was coming next, and the suspense had me on edge.

Just a heads-up: don’t expect happy endings for everyone!

The small-town atmosphere adds an extra layer of creepiness, and the witch horror aspect was truly unsettling. Witches and occult horror is a favorite of mine. Excellent backstory! There were two true villains in the story, one supernatural and one real life, and they intertwined perfectly. I hate them both (in a good way)!

The witch trials were such a horrible experience for women. So many women were accused of practicing witchcraft when they did something society did not like. The community used so many tortuous methods to get confessions that it’s no wonder there are so many stories like this book. I loved the whole aspect of an unwholesome spirit comes back to extract revenge from the town that condemned the woman to her fate. Of course it does not seen fair that people in the future be punished for actions in the past but the spirit just wants revenge. As the book moved along, the ways which the witch gained her powers only increased in severity. Then to add more horror to the story, a decades old missing person investigation by a rogue nurse, the people discover how depraved the asylum doctor really is. His actions only seemed to help add evil to the town making it even easier for the witch to gain her souls. Overall this book had a great spooky vibe and I enjoyed every page! 👻👻👻👻👻

This was my first book by Axl Malton and he’s definitely gained a new fan. The Devil’s Tree was a great story and went in a direction that wasn’t immediately obvious, which I enjoyed a lot. There was a pretty big assembly of main characters but each one was essential to the story. I tip my hat to the author for creating a character I hated so much it made it difficult for me to read the chapters they were involved in. This book had suspense, fantastic tension-building, and explosive moments of action. The chapters were very short, making it so easy to say “just one more,” and I absolutely needed to know what was going to happen. If I have one critique, it’s that I would have liked to see a couple of things wrapped up a bit more at the end, but that’s a personal preference and it didn’t detract from the overall quality of the story.

The only flow of this book was how short it is. It needed much more expanding on the backstory of each plotline.
I loved how compelling both the writing and the story were. I mean, look at the opening.
I also admired how confident the author was of his plot. He was like, I don't need to use flowery words or long paragraphs to shock the hell out of the reader. Just a few words and he got me dead.
To be fair though, although the book had lots of gore, different forms of abuse, and a creepy backstory, it was kind of average on the horror scale.
It's still a fantastic a book, actually one of my favorites this year. But for hardcore horror lovers, you can sleep with the light off no problem.
Again, a great book.
Highly recommend.

"The Devil's Tree" by Axl Malton completely drew me in from the beginning and kept my attention until the very end. The way Axl Malton tells the story is so vivid and compelling that it made me feel like I was right there with the characters. The unexpected twists in the story kept me constantly intrigued, and the characters were so well-written that I felt a strong connection to their experiences. While all the characters were complex, there was one in particular that really stuck with me. The book is full of tension, action, and suspense that kept me eagerly reading, wanting to find out what would happen next. The short but impactful chapters made it hard for me to stop reading because I always wanted to know more about the story. -

Wow! This was a great horror read! Good pace and I loved the change up of POVs every chapter. Each person's story different yet intertwining in the bigger picture. This small town in England gets the shock of the lifetime during a crazy heat wave drying up the land and water. At first, they think the heat is driving people mad, but the answers aren't as simple as they seem and there is a much eviler thing at work.

There are so many twists and turns, while I could figure out some of them I for sure didn't uncover them all before the end of the book. Kept me on my toes and the last 50% flew by, I was at the end before I know it!

If you're a fan of horror, thrillers, and the paranormal pick up this book!

First off, let me say I loved the creepy vibes of the witch portion of this book!!! 🙌 It kept me interested throughout!!

I will say that there is a subplot in this book as well, that in my opinion could have been completely left out!! It almost detracted from the amazing main plot line. Hence the 4 ⭐️ rating!

And Mrs. Leadley?!?! I was cheering that woman on!!! Loved that character!! ❤️

I definitely do recommend this for the witchy creepy vibes alone!!! 🧙‍♀️

TW: animal cruelty/death, suicide, rape, physical abuse

Thank you to NetGalley, Wicked House Publishing, and Axl Malton for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for my honest review! I will definitely be reading more from Axl in the future!!! ❤️

I love paranormal/supernatural Horrors and psychological thrillers and this was a good mix of the two. The case of a missing girl 18 years prior, presumed dead, unusual murders in the present, a dead tree, and an evil Doctor at a local Psychiatric Hospital, are they all linked?

The side plot storyline between Doctor Marone and Lucy was a highlight for me. There were some good twists which kept me turning the pages right to the end.

One thing I didn’t like was that the author often tells us things that are going to happen I guess trying to build some anticipation of what’s to come, but I found that it took me out of the story, I’d have rather just watched things unfold. There was also some animal cruelty which I had to skim over!

Overall I still found it a good read. 4⭐️!

I really enjoyed this read. It was such a pleasant surprise!

The book starts in a scene that had my jaw dropping and safe to say from then onwards I was hooked. The plot is really intricate with many layers, including witch trials, an unsolved disappearance and new unsettling murders. Part paranormal, part really life, this book is sure to tick the boxes for many horror lovers.

There are some twists along the way, some really upsetting moments and characters that cause you to feel an array of emotions.

This is a spooky, confronting and suspenseful read that is worth adding to your TBR asap. Thank you Axl Malton for this read!!

Full disclosure- I was a little nervous to read this book! After reading Cries Of Joy, that book stayed in my head for months and the extremely vivid descriptions that Axl creates haunted me for a long time.
The Devils Tree has all that wonderful imagery that Axl is so good at and creates really lifelike characters that he then makes suffer in wonderful ways! Having a more supernatural vibe made it a much easier book for me to enjoy and the story is brilliant, feeling like a mixture of crime and horror. I shall definitely be reading more of Axl Maltons books.

Fighting the evil within the forest. It takes its victims one by one. The Devil's Tree is a gripping horror novel. Full of twists and unexpected turns. Malton weaves a story of paranormal happenings, with a sinister little side story. The Devil's Tree or as some call it the tree of death.
A single tree in the center of the lake. It grew from a mound of black dirt, but its branches were dead. Be prepared to read this one in one sitting. You won't want to put it down.

I don’t even know how to describe this book. In the first couple chapters you will be either horrified and stop reading or enthralled and finish it in a day. I loved the small town setting and a clear villain that you can’t help but hate, and a lesser villain you can have sympathy for. The characters are real people dealing with some deep emotional scars, yet they are trying to struggle through. I would highly recommend this book. One of the best I’ve read in a while. Can’t wait for the next Axl Malton book.

The Devil’s Tree starts off strong, pulling you into the eerie atmosphere of a small town plagued by mysterious murders. The story follows a sheriff’s investigation into these unsettling crimes, only to uncover a supernatural twist involving resurrected witches tied to an ancient tree. While the central mystery is compelling, I found the subplot involving a nurse, a doctor, and the hospital particularly gripping. The tension in these scenes had me on edge, which shows how well the suspense was built.

The main plot involving the sheriff is solid, though I didn’t connect with the other characters as deeply as I did with the nurse. However, the supernatural elements and escalating tension kept me engaged throughout. As a horror fan, I appreciated the gruesome moments and the blend of supernatural horror with thriller-like pacing.

The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is due to some grammar and phrasing issues, possibly due to differences in language use, which momentarily pulled me out of the story. But overall, this is a great read for anyone who enjoys horror with witches and a good mix of thriller elements. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Axel Maltin’s work!
