Paws and Magic #2

Ryan's Wizard

Rate this book
After years of no contact, Oliver “Olly” Grey was finally able to reunite with his cousin Aiden. He’s surprised to find that Aiden now has a mate—a male, shifter mate—named Lex. And it’s Lex’s pack mates that Olly is there to help save. What he hadn’t expected was Lex’s brother Ryan.

Ryan Shepherd was happy to have found his brother Lex, and even happier to know that his brother was happily mated. But there is something about Aiden’s cousin Olly that Ryan doesn’t trust, especially when he also smells like the man currently holding his pack members captive. Yet that doesn’t stop Ryan from wanting to hold and comfort the man, and eventually he realizes why—Olly is his mate.

Now the four of them need to plan a rescue mission, but what happens when they run into the two men that had held Lex captive and those same men come to the cabin in the middle of the night?

Beany Sparks lives in Western Australia. She first started reading romance novels in 2008, but it wasn't until January 2010 when her Kindle got delivered (which she had brought herself on Christmas Day 2009) that the world of erotic romance opened its doors to her, and she hasn't looked back.

Since English was never her strong subject at school she never expected to write a story, let alone try to get it published. With suggestions and support from friends, her muse—“affectionately" known as PITA—was finally able to break free, and in January 2014 her first story was written. Since she can’t put PITA back in his box—she's tried!—Beany has decided to give in and team up with him.

Together they’ve made plans to write both MF and MM stories. Why? Because love isnt gender specific, love is love.

This takes place right after book one: Aiden’s Shepherd. Olly is Aiden’s cousin and a wizard. Olly is running from his father who is holding a bunch of shifters in cages. Olly runs to Aiden to get his help to release these shifters but is a little nervous when he meets Lex, Aiden’s mate and Ryan, Lex’s brother.

Ryan is leery of Olly because he smells like the man holding the shifters hostage and distrustful of him because he’s a wizard, but he can’t help being attracted, too.

Olly, Lex, Aiden and finally Ryan decide to work together to free the shifters, but have to wait 3 weeks for Olly’s dad to go on a trip and leave the shifter’s unguarded. During those 3 weeks Olly learns more about his own magic and Ryan learns more about Olly.

In the end Ryan discovers Olly is his mate, Olly discovers he is a “special” wizard and all four find ways to work together to free the shifters from Olly’s dad.
**
I liked Aiden’s Shepherd a bit more than this, mostly because the romance here was a bit rushed. I loved that Olly got to be a “super wizard” and that he needed to lose his virginity to do so!

I like this world Beany Sparks has created and am enjoying the series.

I give it 3.5 of 5 hearts

2.5 stars - Again a nice amateur story with the same point of criticism as the first one. Plus, our magical characters are totally overpowered and it really annoyed me that it never got explained how Ryan found his brother. We also know absolutely nothing about Ryan's pack and other points of interest about their pasts.

Olly is a wizard who is back to being friends with his cousin, Aiden, after the family disowned Aiden for being gay. Olly had been forbidden to have anything to do with Aiden and being alone in that family was difficult. Now, though, there are lives on the line, shifter lives.

Aiden is mated to a German Shepherd shifter (that made me smile, I admit) named Lex. Lex’s brother, Ryan, shows up to help with the pack rescue. Ryan doesn’t trust Olly one bit – Olly smells like the enemy. Ryan basically accuses Olly of being part of the plot to cage the shifters and Aiden, along with Lex, jump to Olly’s defense. “Holy shit, I was jealous.” Gee, Ryan, ya think?

To be fair, you can’t blame Ryan overmuch. Olly is a wizard, so he DOES smell like the enemy. There are a lot of pack members missing and the brothers are very worried. It goes from bad to worse when Olly has to tell them where the shifters are being held. Because Olly had such a rough childhood, he is sensitive to anger. Ryan doesn’t help this at all, even though sometimes it is inadvertent.

When Olly finally has had enough of the snark, he’s awesome. Calling up the wind to help, Olly starts to come into his own and woe be to Ryan to forget – the man is a wizard! I mean, come on – have you met Gran? Who, by the way, has some interesting news for Olly.

Ryan really takes a while to get his head out of his butt, have to say. I did love one exchange between them, because I wish more people realize it:
“Ryan pulled back and frowned at him. “I don’t really know you.”
“Yet you have no problem in judging me,” Olly stated.”

Exactly.

Just as a mention – I totally want to have Olly’s cleaning magic. Or hire him to come over.

They all have to work together on the rescue mission and sometimes that is a problem. There were times details were given that seemed superfluous to me and dragged me out of the story a little bit, but these were few. (Such as explaining why they made quick cups of tea). Some things made me laugh (Lex’s jaw dropping, which “just looked weird on a dog”).

Overall, it’s an interesting take on a shifter/wizard story with likeable characters, an asshat family and mate that needs a shake. And the poor polar bears!

Original Blog Post: Virtual Book Tour, eARC Review, Excerpt & #Giveaway:Ryan's Wizard (Paws & Magic #2) by Beany Sparks

My Rating: 3.5 of 5 Stars

Ryan, or Lex's brother, is an alpha German Shepherd shifter. After getting separated from Lex, he had managed to survive being hunted. Hurt and alone for some time, he finally has enough trust to go to the location Lex had told him he and their kind would be safe. He knew that Lex's mate was a wizard but he had no idea that when he finally walks into the safe house, he would find another wizard there.

Olly was just like Aiden, but less hated by their 'wonderful' family. Where Aiden had been kicked out after declaring he was gay, Olly had kept quiet and disappeared into the shadows. He did keep in touch with his grandmother but when she died, he almost lost hope. When her ghost instructed him to go to Aiden in a secure location, he ignored the call until she proved her might and power that he had no choice but to go and join his cousin.

The short synopsis is where the first book, Aiden's Shepherd, ended and Ryan's Wizard, this second book, opens. In short, if you have not read book one, be sure to get lost. This is a complicated paranormal story where ghosts converse with the living and the powers of wizards are a mystery. What they now know about their magic are all based on speculation, thanks to their subjecting the most powerful of them all to their snobbery and hypocrisy. They had no idea that the very ones they subjected to bully and cruelty were the most powerful of them all. Thanks to grandmother Alayna, they were protected. Shielded.

Now their time has come. Their powers are rising, her ghost is there to guide them, and their mates are there to protect them. One by one, those who had been lost are now found and the future is hopeful. Thing is, they may have to go through a little bit of a power struggle before they find their happily ever afters.

Book two ends, more mysteries to come and more characters with unknown powers will rise.

Both the writing and contents in general are still painfully immature. It feels as though neither the author nor any of the characters are in fact adults; I don’t know how to better describe the effect.
This is what I would have expected to read if someone at school had passed me something they’d written up. (And of course I am generalizing with this; maturity in writing and otherwise can occur at all kinds of ages.)

For example this is a thing here: Person A explains something to person B in a bit of dialogue. Then person B reports said explanation to person C almost verbatim. Do we really need to be informed of things twice in exactly the same way? Usually, after two pages or so, my memory is still way too fresh to necessitate regurgitation of information. And even if there was danger of my forgetting, a short reminder would suffice.

And the author, or rather the characters approach sex pretty much how I pictured it to be (or should be) when I was fourteen. And I was immature for my age.
Even when someone proclaims their horniness, it does not really translate to the page, possibly because the actions taken don’t match up. I just can’t see guys in their late twenties (virgin or not) going about things in this way.

Although I do wish to know how it can be that our magical Gran is grandmother to both Aiden and Olly, who’re cousins, if Gran only had a single child, Aiden’s mother…

Also, heh.
Even so, the natural reaction to killing two people in a really gruesome way is apparently getting horny. *nod* Happens to me all the time.

Oh well. It is probably a good thing there there’s not more of this series for now, since I am going to require a long break from it.

Picking up right where Aiden's Shepherd left off, with Aiden and Lex mated and surprised by the sudden arrival of Ryan and Ollie.

I highly recommend that you read this series in order. Ryan and Oliver's mating is the primary focus of this story, but the ongoing mystery of Lex and Ryan's missing pack members is integral as well.

Despite the escalating threat, RYAN'S WIZARD still has a lighthearted feel overall. Quite frankly, I didn't care for Ryan's character at first... but he grew on me. Ollie, by contrast, is completely lovable from beginning to end.

Beany Sparks offers a unique perspective of shifters, wizards, and other magical beings that is a pleasure to read.

Original review on Molly Lolly
Four stars!
enjoyed the second book in this seres. It was a fun read and I managed to read it pretty quickly. Mostly because I didn’t want to stop reading because it kept me engaged the whole time. This book picked up right where the first book ended so it was nice not to have to guess what happened between the two. While it’s possible to read this book without having read the first, it’s definitely better to read them in order because you will get a little lost. This book tied up one of the questions that I had at the end of the first book. There’s also great set up for more books in the series.
I really liked seeing Olly and Ryan were confused by their reactions to each other at first. Once they understood what was going on their love blossomed beautifully. Seeing how they cared for each other and looked out for each other was one of my favorite parts of the book.

When Oliver “Olly” Gray was young, his parents forced him to separate from his cousin, Aiden, because he is gay. Now years later, they are reunited and Olly is delighted to meet Aiden’s mate, Lex. Olly has come there to help save Lex’s pack mates. He never expected to meet Ryan Shepherd, who had just been reunited with Lex. He is leery of Olly but at the same time he wants to comfort him. Olly spells like the men who took Lex, his brother, and now the men who took Lex are back.

This is a wonderful series. I have enjoyed meeting the characters and you cannot help but wish for more. The road to love is not an easy path for these Ryan and Olly. They have many hurdles to overcome. Hop on for the ride and watch as these two find unexpected love. You will be glad you did.

This book picks up just where Aiden's Shepherd leaves off.Ryan doesn't trust Olly. Olly's not sure what to think of Ryan. While they dance around the attraction that takes both men by surprise, they have a family to save and bad guys to conquer. Recommended read.

Wow, this part was even worse, compared to first book. Sure the main story developed in a record time, with even faster evolving emotions. I was bored while reading the book. Good word for this series is "cliche".
