An authoritative 19th-century history, based on official records and other documents, chronicles the navy's role in the war from the opening shots to the desperate final months. Highlights include the fight between the Monitor and the Merrimac, the capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, the Red River Expedition, and much more. Numerous illustrations.
A detailed examination of both the Union and Confederate navies during the American Civil War. It has backgrounds on many naval officers and descriptions of engagements with casualty figures. This is a wonderful addition to the library of the Civil War buff.
This an amazingly good book. I learned a lot from all the details mentioned in it. I would not have known about this book if I didn't see it in the opening credits of the movie The Hunt for Red October.
