With that much variety, you just have to what makes a fish a fish? This book helps answer the question! Filled with amazing X-rays, full-color photographs, and lively text, Curious About Fishes looks at underwater creatures inside and out. Inspired by a popular Smithsonian exhibition and the first children’s book to feature these extraordinary X-rays.
Plot Summary: This book uses a combination of photographs, as well as x-rays to depict different varieties of fish on each page. The book deals greatly with detailed, yet age appropriate information on these aquatic vertebrates. The book shows many of the similarities between fish that are extremely different. It also emphasizes that although many different fish look different from one another, they all still have many of the same requirements to survive. During the reading of this book, the pictures keep the reader wanting more and eager to flip through the pages to discover a multitude of interesting facts.
Literary Merit: This book provides very specific information on varieties of fish. The use of the x-rays in combination with the photographs provides the reader with interest and a curiosity to want to turn the page and see what comes next. some of the information is very specific and detailed, but is presented in a way that is age appropriate and that children would be able to read and understand.
Genre Considerations: This non-fiction informational book is very typical for its genre in that it is very accurate in its wording and depictions of various fish species. The information that is provided is all based on scientific research, and is therefore worthy of being placed on a classroom book shelf. This Smithsonian book uses photographs that are extremely clear and accurate to connect the reader to the words on the page.
Reader Response/Classroom Connections: One way in which students could connect to this book would be on a science unit about animals. The book does a good job of showing the characteristics of fish in particular, and shows what similarities many fish species have, despite their interesting shapes, colors, and ways of moving. This would enable children to look critically when categorizing living things, and would help them develop skills needed to look for critical differences. Another way this book could be used is to talk about things such as the skeletal system. Because each page has fish x-rays on it, the bones are easy to see, especially when contrasted on a black background.
This kids book does a great job of explaining the differences and similarities between fish species. The photos and x-rays are great - the reader can actually see the structural differences that the text draws attention to on the page. I like the fact that the images are very real - colorful, clear, and inline with the words on the page. The examples of adaptations are clear, even for small children. There are some big words in the text, well, big for my six year old - but they are defined both in the text and at the back of the book in the Glossary. There are also interesting "fish facts" throughout the book that tell the reader something unique about the name, shape, or specialization of a particular fish. Highly recommended for the curious.
Living by many lakes means many of my students have gone fishing. Students have seen many fish, but have the seen fish skeletons? This nonfiction book centers around how fish are named, specifically by their skeletons. Interesting and different way to organize and tell a nonfiction text.
No Awards Appropriate Grade Levels: 3-4 This book teaches about a ton of different kinds of fishes. It give information about their shapes and how they get their food. There is also a glossary in the back which is very helpful. I like this book because I do think it gives a lot of information about different fishes that children may not know about. I also like the pictures they include for each fish. The book also has "Fish Facts" on almost every page that gives a little more information about a specific fish. You can use this book to teach about fishes and how many there are and different eating and living habits. You can also use this book to compare and contrast the different fish in the book.
