Speaking of the plot, it wasn't developed as much here, but I'm looking for some intriguing turns. I sincerely hope they make a good decision because the plot has shifted to include more horror and fantasy elements. But I truly like their scientific talks.
The manga-version of The Summer of Ubume (originally by Natsuhiko Kyogoku) is just beautiful! Aki Shimizu continues to proof herself as a talented manga-ka and good story teller! Her drawing and story-telling makes my reading experience pleasant! I am looking forward for the next volume! Can't wait!!
This is the second volume of the manga adaptation of Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s novel, “Ubume no Natsu”, or “The Summer of the Ubume”, the first entry in the author’s “Hyakki Yakou” series.
The manga author who adapted this novel really turned it into a work of their own. Moody, suffocating illustrative storytelling that grips the reader. The art conveys that gritty Showa era filter that gives it a lived in feeling. His visuals lean heavily on the noir elements the novel has. The femme fatale is drawn beautifully, and the mystery carries the story until the inevitable reveal.
I have mentioned that the story has noir elements, but also supernatural, and body horror elements. There are romantic elements as well, and the tragedy that results from the doomed romance and cuckolding. Japanese authors really enjoy their NTR.
This one really hooked me. Compared to the previous volume, this one grabbed my attention from page one and didn’t let go. Great storytelling, very tense build up. The mystery is getting so interesting as well as very creepy and unsettling. I have a theory about what’s going on so I can’t wait to see if I’m right.
My one complaint with the story is the character of Sekiguchi. I understand the character and what it means for the story but he annoys me so much. Characters who are so biased over something because a pretty face asked them for help just irritate me. And there’s just something overall creepy about him.
This volume seeing more movement plot-wise when the investigator & the two journalists went to the Kounji house/hospital to investigate. It unveiled the condition of marriage between the disappeared doctor & his wife. Sekiguchi also starting to remember who, when and where he first met Kouji Kyoko or one of the twins. The big question is who is among them that is actually crazy? There's a lot of scene where someone accusing one or the other being crazy.
