This thoroughly revised and updated guide features 109 hikes in Yellowstone National Park. Readers will find detailed maps, field-checked information on all of the trails, elevation charts, difficulty ratings, and ratings and information on backcountry camping. Hiking tips and information on avoiding confrontations with bears round out this classic guidebook.
Helped me find a great day hike during our trip to Yellowstone! Very clear and well laid out, especially like the elevation change graphs on most hikes. My only gripe is that the author often has a tone of “sure you COULD just DRIVE to the viewpoint but if you want the REAL experience...” which feels like the book is negging me a little. Its not too bad though and doesn’t lessen the helpfulness of the book.
Great basic overview of the more well known hikes in Yellowstone. There was some I hadn't heard about and the author's honest rating system for trails was very helpful. I also enjoyed the recommendations for best hikes for photography (and other activities). I wouldn't depend on the directions in the book alone to find my way - you still need some very good maps and a GPS but this book points you in the right direction.
This book is a great one to help you plan out some neat hikes on future trips - but do your home work and get a map too.
Terrific guide. The author gives all of the facts needed to navigate each hike including the GPS coordinates of every camp site, but even more helpful is the way he separates the hikes into different categories like best hikes to lakes, best hikes to waterfalls, best flat hikes, best thermal areas, and many more. He offers insight as to which hikes are best in which seasons and breaks the mileage of every hike and major waypoint down so you know how far every leg of the hike will be. I am planning my first Yellowstone backpacking trip in August of 18 and this book has helped tremendously in selecting an itinerary.
This book was invaluable for finding great hikes during my summer-long road trip in the northern Rockies last year. Our trip included visits to Glacier, Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, Yellowstone, Beartooth Pass corridor, Grand Teton and the Wind River Range.
This book is awesome. Not only does it have honest advice on the quality of the trails, explicit directions to the trailheads, and detailed information on terrain, it shows a line map of the elevation gain of the trail! I love that! I HATE hikes that turn into death marches because suddenly there's a freakin' mountain to climb, and this book makes that impossible. Also, it told me about this really cool hike that is unmarked on any other map (not to mention road sign or trailhead) that I've seen.
There are 109 hikes described in this book. Bill also gives very good advise on hiking at Yellowstone. The beginning of the book is worth taking the time to read. His Yellowstone trailfinder on page 35 rates the hikes he reviews from easy to difficult. The hikes he reviews are not only described in full. He also gives you other options & side trips, which is helpful. Almost all the hikes have a mileage chart also.
I would definitely recommend this book to day hikes & backpackers alike!
