Lena of Vegitopia and the Mystery of the Missing Animals is a vegan-themed fairy tale about how one brave little girl stands up for the animal friends of her land and helps rescue them from being eaten. The book promotes messages of kindness, compassion, and action and shows that magical things can happen when you harness the power of veggies.
Read this delightful book to my infant daughter, and while she doesn't comprehend reading and such at 3 month, it's great to begin to share our family's desire not to cause harm.
With colorful, goofy illustrations reminiscent of "Rugrats," LENA is a wonderful choice for veg*n children who may not be ready for more overwhelming books like "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals."
Unfortunately, I doubt many omni families will pick up this book for their kids. It is a little heavy-handed in its depiction of Carnista--the queen who hates vegetables--and her rapid health transformation that occurs when she agrees to try veggies. I felt that aspect was a bit too over-the-top.
If you're familiar with the flimsy, amateurish veg*n childrens' books of 20 years ago, you will be amazed and thrilled to see the high quality of these books. They are bound, illustrated and presented in a professional way and will be loved by lucky kids for years to come.
