Carnival Nights

Rate this book
“Happy Birthday, Charlie Scott…”

This is definitely not how Charlie thought she’d be spending her nineteenth birthday; bunking with her fugitive lover in a cheap hotel room. But he’s got a surprise for her…

Blue knows two things: he’s the luckiest guy in the world, and she’d be better off if she never met him. He blames himself for the life she was forced to leave behind, but tonight he’s planned her a birthday party that she’ll never forget.

With one foot on the pedal, it’s only a matter of time before they find themselves on the run again. But for now, even if it’s only for one night, they’ll set everything else aside and party amongst a sea of neon lights.

“Everything can change in just one night…”

Carnival Nights is a novella that bridges the time between Carnival and the upcoming Amusement. This book contains sexual content and drug use.

I grew up on a farm in Ohio, but that's not very interesting, is it? When I'm not writing you can find me doing one of two things; getting lost on highways or getting lost in the lives of fictional characters. If my heart had two feet, one foot would be in romance and the other solidly in geekdom. I hope you'll all follow me on my journey through this carnival they call life.I promise there will be a happy ending.

Okay. So I decided I wanted to give this series another try. Because I hate not finishing series. So when I signed up for an ARC I was excited and I was hoping maybe Charlie (the heroine) would maybe knock some sense into her freaking brain..

Did I get that? No.

I was close to give this book two stars, because it was just an okay book. When I was reading it felt like it took forever to finish. I skimmed through some parts not caring for the drug scenes and trust me their was lots of them, but the writing was beautiful, that's what gave it three stars. We also get more of Blue's POV aswell which was interesting to say the less.

But overall this book wasn't for me.

K.B. Nelson is one of my favorite authors who I recently discovered this year with her debut novel Carnival. I devoured Carnival in one sitting and have been going through major withdrawal ever since waiting for Amusement to be released – I need more Charlie and Blue! Lucky for me and fans of Ms. Nelson, she has given us Carnival Nights to help with our addiction to this amazing series. I am amazed at how much awesomeness is in between the pages of this novella!

Carnival Nights gives the reader some insight on the time in between Carnival and Amusement. Charlie and Blue are on the run and working another carnival circuit. Life on the road is not easy for Charlie and Blue, but they have each other. And all you need is love, right?
“He’s my world. And I’m his.”

Ah, young love (sigh).

It’s Charlie’s nineteenth birthday and Blue has a big surprise planned for her. He is feeling really guilty for dragging Charlie into his world and wants to try and cheer her up a bit. They end up at a rave, hook up with some drugs and are having the most awesome night ever. Hey, they deserve it right?

It must be mentioned - the sex scene at the rave….yeah….totally HOT! I had to reread that part several times, because it was just that good.
“It’s here in the aftermath of a good fuck that I feel the
safest. Safe from the world and safe from our past. It’s here that I’m
reminded that I’ve got her and she’s got me. And the hot sex is just
an added fucking bonus.”

The night does not go as planned and things go further down the path to hell the next day. The words ‘You’re fired’ are never a good thing to hear upon waking up seven hours late for work.
“Shit just went south real fucking quick.”

Yeah, drugs will do that do you…just sayin'. Blue made a very stupid unwise financial decision that night and with their current employment status, well, life is not looking real rosy for the two lovebirds.
“It’s beyond crazy how alive drugs can make one feel. They lit up my world and took me to places I didn’t even know existed. Took me to places that made me see the beauty in everything. I went down the rabbit hole and it changed my life. At first, it was for the better. But like a game of dominoes, everything fell apart, piece after piece.”

Life is spiraling out of control once again for Blue and Charlie. As one life is hanging by a thread, major decisions must be made. But will they be the right ones?
“Deja-fucking-vu. We’ve been here before, back when we were forced to leave Lakeview. At that moment, I knew that was the right choice, but I never had a real hand in deciding our fate. My heart wouldn’t allow that. This time, I’m in the driver’s seat and from here on out, something’s gotta change.”

And that folks is where Ms. Nelson leaves us – hanging once again. So many questions are racing through my mind and I must wait. Again. But I know that this ‘wait in line’ will be well worth the ride because that is how talented Ms. Nelson is. She is able to grab hold of your attention with her words and keep you enthralled until the very last page is read. Blue and Charlie’s world is a wild, rocky and turbulent one, and I can’t wait to see where Ms. Nelson takes them in this series. Whatever direction it takes, I know it’s gonna be good and I will be there hanging on to each and every word.
“I don’t know where we’re going or what we’re going to do, so I
guess I’ll just drive until I can’t drive anymore.
But that’s a difficult chore when you’re unable to see the road
ahead...
And I’m not talking about the rocks. I can see them just fine. It’s
everything else.”

In "Carnival Nights" which I won from Goodreads Giveaways Charlie Scott and Blue are on the run from the law and working in a carnival. Although Blue feels lucky to be in love with Charlie, she longs for normalcy and home. As they celebrate her nineteenth birthday little do Charlie and Blue expect to be involved in a drug theft and to be on the run from the police again.

The short novella follows Charlie and Blue after their escape from the police in Lakeview. In a downward spiral the couple live in a cheap hotel room, work at a Carnival and indulge in sex and drugs. The atmosphere is filled with hopelessness as they live on the edge, never knowing when the police will catch up with them, and taking drugs to overcome feelings of guilt and despair. Charlie in this story clings to her love for Blue, but yearns for her old life and the town she left behind. Although the plot is thin there are two new characters who add to the action near the end; Charlie's friend Gina a blunt, but amiable carnie and her boyfriend the unpredictable gun-wielding drug pusher Shane.

The novella is quick, light reading which answers the question about what Charlie and Blue's life was like after they left Lakeview.

My Thoughts

As some of you guys may remember, a few months ago I has the great pleasure of reviewing Carnival for our author, KB Nelson. I was a little hesitant to start that read, but I was (am still am) on a huge carnival/circus kick. I remember that I stayed up all night one night and read Carnival from cover to cover. I had no idea what I was getting into, so I definitely did not expect for it to become one of my favorite reads of 2014!

Since connecting with KB Nelson and reviewing Carnival, I have had the awesome opportunity to work closely with KB Nelson through her development of this series. A few months ago she approached her “Carnies” with the notion of writing a novella to bridge the gap between books one and two. I was totally on board for the idea. So… here we are just a few short months later and Nelson has already supplied us with an amazing novella to chronicle another short adventure in the story of Charlie and Blue!

Carnival Nights picks up shortly after our huge ending in Carnival. Our story feature Blue and Charlie settling down into life in the Carnival, while dealing with Charlie’s emotional distress from her sudden life change. This story is a short one. Roughly 70 pages. You guys will fly through this one.

For such a short read, there really isn’t too much I can say without spoiling it, but if you were a fan of Carnival, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the little story that KB Nelson has given us! It’s full of some amazing character development and some great emotions. It was a quick, refreshing read for me! KB Nelson has an amazing writing voice that really weaves a great story. You’re never left unsatisfied when she is at the helm!

I’m so conflicted with what I can say about Carnival Nights because it’s SO short that I don’t want to spoil anything. I’ll just tell you that I had over 20 highlighted passages from some amazing lines of dialogue and thoughts from our two main characters. Seriously guys, one of the best novellas I have read. I can’t really say with absolute certainty, but I am fairly positive that if you want to keep up with the series, you are going to want to read this novella.

All-in-all, I am granting Carnival Nights by KB Nelson a well-deserved 5 star review! I don’t know about you guys, but I am PUMPED to read the next book in the series!

This novella takes place several months on from the ending of book 1, Carnival. I enjoyed getting to read more about Charlie and Blue, and I was looking forward to seeing where their story would take them next. However I felt this novella was a bit lacking. It was short, but then novellas are so that didn't really bother me, I just thought more could have been told of what they had been doing or how their relationship had progressed, even in a book this short.
The contents of this novella seemed to be more of a 'bonus scene' type of thing as opposed to a story in itself, in it Charlie, Blue, Cookie and new friend Gina go to a rave and end up buying some drugs. This leads to a chain of bad luck and ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. It opens up their story for another book in the series and I was very much left with more questions after reading this novella than I was at the end of book 1.
So to conclude, I did enjoy this novella just because I love these characters but this did seem to be more of a seague from book 1 to possibly book 2, I guess I just think this seemed like it could have been the prologue of the next book more or less. It could have been improved as a novella if there was just a bit more going on in this novella to make it stand out as a story in an of itself as opposed to the extra scene is seemed to me it was.

*I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review*

This book is what happens after Carnival and before Amusement. Charlie and Blue are still on the run. Blue has guilt for bringing Charlie into his world so he's determined to make things better for her. He throws her an amazing birthday party. But living the way they are...well, you can only feel safe for so long.

In my opinion, this book needed to be fantastic in order to compare to Carnival. So, I can say, happily, it was just as good! After Carnival, I was dying to read more about Charlie and Blue because I loved them both SO much. It was truly a perfect addition to the Carnival Series! I'm so happy to have discovered K.B. Nelson's writing! So far, I've loved everything she writes and I just know I'll continue loving whatever else comes.

Carnival Nights is part two of the Carnival Series.

Carnival Nights picks up sometime after Carnival ended. In this short story you get to see how the two settled down and was making their lives work.

For being such a short story nothing was rushed, it was pact with a great story line, and answered a lot of questions from where Carnival ended.

The emotions in this story had your heart beating fast, tummy butterflies, the love that Blue and Charlie shared is definitely undeniable.

I don't really know what to say without giving to much away but let me just say I was so excited when I got a email telling me there would be a novella, and a GREAT one at that!!!

I wish I could give more then 5 stars!

Great follow up novella!

Carnival Nights is a short sneak at what's been going on with Charlie and Blue...and it's delightful! The story is action packed and delicious and a super quick read. I got sucked right in and couldn't put it down.

Only complaint? I expected more about carnival nights...There's some discussion of the way life on the carnival circuit goes but the majority of the book takes place outside of the carnival. I understand the purpose for the title and the story and enjoyed it very much.

Very excited to see where these characters go!

Short little steamy novella. This book takes place in between two books. I guess you can say this is a little bonus or teaser for those who just couldn't get enough of the last book and want a little something to read before the next book comes out. I thought this novella was enjoyable and recommend you lovely read the previous book before you get to this.

There wasn't really much to this novella except a rave where Charlie, Blue, and their friends take ecstasy and then lose their jobs at the carnival. There was a bit of action at the end and then it ended in a cliffhanger. I already own a copy of book 2 so I'll be reading it at some point, but unfortunately, I'm not in much of a hurry.

This is a continuation of the first book. It is right what Charlie and Blue go through after they make their decisions. It is a short read and gives us a good insight to them and what they are dealing with.
