Awaken your heart and engage your mind with Buddhist Wisdom: Daily Reflections , a simple but powerful collection of Buddhist sayings and extracts that offer an easy way to incorporate the Buddha's most significant teachings into your everyday life. Use it daily or at random to find help facing a particular issue or problem.
Illustrated with photographs of traditional Buddhist people, sacred places and monuments, the book provokes contemplation and more profound understanding for all individuals, regardless of religious persuasion. Buddhist Wisdom also offers a brief overview of the life of the Buddha, Buddhist teachings and the spread of Buddhism around the world; includes a Buddhist calendar of celebration days and festivals.
I have been reading Buddhist Wisdom: Daily Reflections for a year-literally. (And what a difference a year makes.) One page a day plus whatever time I needed to spend to think about what I was reading. I think the discipline alone has been good for me and I will miss this little book. There is a meme that I have seen floating around that says Buddhism is not a religion but a practice, and I rather like that idea. I will not be a Buddhist in this lifetime (and in a minute I will tell you why) but I still think there is something to learn here. One of the things this book urges is to render oneself free of attachment-I cannot do that, sorry, I am too mired in the world of the material. I have a house note to pay, for instance and a family that depends on me to provide them with a place to live. That does not mean I cannot see how attachment to material things can cause suffering. As is my custom with a book like this I will be passing it on to someone else I hope they also enjoy it.
Bite-sized snippets of Buddhist wisdom, presented as daily doses. Of course, I didn't want to take a whole year to do a read through of it. Maybe now I will use it as intended....
The quotes imparted are valuable, useful whether you are Buddhist or not.
I stumbled upon this little pleasant surprise on the clearance shelf at Barnes and Noble. I had to have it! I'm a huge fan of Eastern philosophy, specifically - Buddhist wisdom. Sadly, during the course of twentieth century, Buddhism has declined drastically in Asia, partly due to materialism of modern consumer culture. However for those who appreciate Eastern Wisdom, This little book is filled with short quotes and verses, that give you just enough to ponder about. Almost every single one of them is extremely to the point and useful, especially for those who are going through hard times in their lives or simply need an advice. I would say this is a perfect nightstand book - something you pick up before going to bed.(At least, that's what I personally do).
