The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (BBC Radio) #1-2

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Collection One

Rate this book
Clive Merrison and Andrew Sachs star in eight original BBC Radio 4 full-cast adventures for Holmes and Watson.

How many times did Dr John Watson tantalise us with passing references to a mystery which his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, never wrote about in full? In these original adventures Bert Coules has imaginatively fleshed out eight such unrecorded cases.

The Madness of Colonel Warburton: Watson’s old C.O. believes he can speak to the dead.
The Star of the Adelphi: A case full of deceit, delusion and theatrical pretence.
The Saviour of Cripplegate Square: Holmes recounts one of his most chilling cases.
The Singular Inheritance of Miss Gloria Wilson: A thirty year old mystery is revisited.
The Abergavenny Murder: An astonishing fate awaits a visitor to Baker Street.
The Shameful Betrayal of Miss Emily Smith: A snow-bound mystery for Holmes.
The Tragedy of Hanbury Street: A complex tale of good deeds and deceit in the slums of London.
The Determined Client: A family feud ends in bloodshed.

Also included is a bonus interview with Bert Coules, the chief dramatist of BBC Radio 4’s celebrated Sherlock Holmes canon.

Bert Coules is an English writer, and dramatist, who has produced a number of adaptations and original works. He works mainly in radio drama but also writes for TV and the stage.

Coules specializes in mystery and science fiction audio and radio drama, and has written a number of adaptations, most notably as the head writer of the Sherlock Holmes radio series (1989–1998) starring Clive Merrison as Holmes and Michael Williams as Watson (the first time the entire canon had been adapted with the same two lead actors throughout). He also wrote original Sherlock Holmes scripts for the following BBC radio series The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, each based on a reference from the original stories. These were first broadcast between 2002 and 2010, and starred Merrison and Andrew Sachs as Watson, following Michael Williams' death in 2001.

He has also written adaptations of several of Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael novels, and of works by Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Isaac Asimov and other best-selling genre authors.

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Bert Coules sets about to tell the stories that are mentioned in passing in the canonical Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. The stories told in these BBC radio productions are multi-person cast stories that range about 40-50 minutes in length each. The stories are interesting, the full cast production makes listening a pleasure and the nature of a number of the stories have qualities that make them similar to the original Sherlock stories. Overall, the additional stories of Sherlock are interesting, engaging and the performances are thoroughly enjoyable. 4 stars.

Clive Merrison and Andrew Sachs make for the most excellent Holmes and Watson and I simply adore these adaptations. Indeed, I have listened to them several times and never seem to tire of them and I'm a diehard Brett & Hardwicke fan. This is actually volume 2 and has the bonus of Sachs interviewing Bert Coules, an entertaining extra and I learned things about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that I hadn't known before.
I can't recommend these adaptations enough - the acting is impeccable, the actual presentation with sound effects etc is a absolutely spot on and the dynamic between Merrison and Sachs is simply perfect. When I have my library with armchairs positioned at the fire, I will delight in listening to these over and over again and I will be content.
