Lauren Matthews believes she will be dead in seven days. She’s done witnessing others around her meeting that exact fate. With the device Marshall Grayson installed in her head as the only golden thread linking them, Lauren is left with no choice but to believe it is her destiny to die. Unable to see her professional world in Washington DC is about to be ruled by her personal life in San Francisco, Lauren’s two realities collide when Grayson Industries’ influential financier, Alejandro Fernandez, infuses himself in her life. Enchanted by Alejandro's old world charm and modern sensitivity, Lauren becomes tangled in a web of sex, love, deceit, and murder. She struggles to find a balance between self-preservation and ethical responsibility. With the full scope of the prototype slowly possessing her every thought, she truly understands―her life is not her own. Will Alejandro’s love be enough to reawaken her soul and change her destiny?
Gretchen enjoys self-publishing her work and is truly learning to let go with every curve and bump in the creative process. Gretchen enjoys writing about first loves and first times, in the first person. She is a firm believer that anything is possible if you set your mind to it; and what you expect out of life, always finds a way of showing up.
First, WTF was this book?!?! Yeah, this is one of those books where you finish and you don’t even consider how good or bad it is. Instead, it’s just you chanting WTF over and over again. And even though I’ve had a couple hours to mull things over and decide on a rating, my thoughts are still frazzled and in chunks…so my review will be styled that way as well. It’s going to go in the order of how it went from a potential 5 star read to 2.5 stars.
5 star beginning
This book premise is so unique and the story started off strong. I was definitely clueless about what exactly was going on, but I was looking forward to reading how this mystery would unfold.
3-3.5 stars after the first 40%
There were a lot of things that made me question the believability of the story. First, the female protagonist Lauren is injected with a ‘prototype’ and after accessing secret files learns that she’ll be dead in 7 days. Her mission is to meet up with a financier of this prototype project, Alejandro. As the story progressed, there was no sense of urgency, like ‘oh, I’m going to be dead in 7 days if I don’t find out more about this device’ wasn’t emphasized. Instead, I read about her jealousy issues over Marshall, her inner dialogue complaining she never asked for all of this, and how much she swoons over Alejandro (which brings me to my next point).
“My god, he looked like he had been plucked from the pages of a GQ magazine.”
Insta-love alert!! I was under the belief that Alejandro was supposed to be the enemy as he knowingly financed prototypes and Lauren is one of them but it just didn’t feel like he was. The first chapters with them together were all about Lauren being speechless over his beauty and Alejandro repeatedly complementing Lauren’s looks.
“My name is Alejandro Fernandez. You must be Mrs. Matthews. It’s Miss. I’m not married. Oh, my mistake, I just assumed – you are such a beautiful woman.”
Mind you, this is right after Lauren fought with someone and has bruises all over her face. Ugh. And another thought running through my head was how the heck does a CIA agent act as clumsy and idiotic as Lauren does?
“I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t need this. All I wanted was to be a good CIA agent and do some insignificant side jobs for Marshall.”
Yeah…ok. I honestly don’t understand why Lauren thinks doing illegal ‘insignificant’ side jobs involving revolutionary prototypes wouldn’t get her into any kind of trouble. What was this woman thinking?!
2.5 stars for the last 60%
After the halfway mark, things really started picking up plot-wise but it wasn’t enough to answer questions brought up in the first half. Details were skimmed over and the main storyline (why these prototypes were manufactured in the first place, who was the mastermind, etc…) flopped and all the bad was pinned on the one obvious person responsible for everything. I did like Alejandro’s character but Lauren’s stupidity and dramatic antics really annoyed me.
Usually I can tell how much I enjoy a book just by how fast I read it – the best books take me mere hours to read. This book, however, took me almost a day and half to trudge through and every chapter or so that got my eyes rolling I had to force myself to not DNF and continue. In short, this is a book with an interesting concept but completely failed at its execution.
Prototype is the first book in the Possession series and not a standalone. The ending isn’t an exact cliffhanger but leaves the reader with tons of unanswered questions.
Long before there was 50 Shades of Grey, I was a huge fan of medical mysteries. Patricia Cornwell and Robin Cook were my go-to authors at that time, but now I am a self-publishing author junkie. I crave their stories as much as I do a diet coke. My usual reading genre at this point is that of romance so when I first read the blurb for Prototype I was intrigued as this seemed to be more of a thriller than a romance. Could it be that I was going to go back to my roots? Was this going to be a medical/science mystery? It took me a little while to fully immerse myself into the book as I had to regroup from strictly reading romance over the past 2 years. “Prototype” is a mixture of futuristic medicine, suspense and romance.
Lauren is caught up in her infatuation with her boss, Marshall. She wants to walk away from her secret identity status and being a guinea pig for new technology testing, but Marshall is able to sweet talk her into one last job, and he uses his lust-filled actions to his advantage in order to persuade her.
This current prototype is one that has been sold to Alejandro, a.k.a “a God from Spain.” Alejandro is requesting he be able to see first hand what the device’s capabilities are. Along the way to meet Alejandro, Lauren discovers that she has been given 7 days before she will meet her untimely death. Lauren and Alejandro have an immediate connection, a connection that Lauren has not felt with anybody for over 10 years. Lauren is a tough gal and can tolerate many physical inflictions to her body while performing her job.
“These are just the scars. The wounds I bury everyday lay deeper than this. Don’t ask me to tell you who damaged me, there are too many to count.”
There are twists and turns abounding in this story and you have no idea who to trust and who is telling lies to their benefit.
“You’re so hungry for this prototype to be successful, you’re willing to kill and main people to do it? Who are you? You’re not the person I loved and respected.”
“Prototype” will have you making up your own thoughts as to whom to trust and will stimulate your mind. It’s not a read that you can breeze though – you need to be able to keep track of everybody and their motives. It does end on a cliffhanger and I look forward to reading the next installment.
I remember a few years ago reading Gretchen's series Wilson Mooney. After reading all 3 books I thought this author puts her heart and soul into her work. Now after reading Prototype I know for sure this is so. I have no interest in Sci Fi anything. But I had to read this because of knowing her track record I knew it would be great. And that it is with strong character's to lead you through the twist and turns that this story takes you on. I could not put it down. It starts with a little touch of romance with Lauren having a crush on Marshall well at least she has a hard time telling him no. Now she up for one more job. Big mistake. But she soon finds herself running but not knowing who she can trust, she has to decide how she is going to get out of this a live. People are dying around her, friends co-workers. She is on the run. She then meets Alejandro's in her adventure to figure out what is going on. Her life is no longer hers. She can no longer trust her co-workers but can she trust Alejandro? She is having feelings for him but finds out things that may change her mind about him. All I can say is it goes fast and you will not be disappointed. She has out done herself again. I am going to be counting the days until the next book in this series comes out.
Gaaahhh.... I truly can't figure out how to write this review. I am always at a complete loss of words when I read a book that is completely different of all other books I have read. This book was a little harder for me to read than most books I have read lately... Not because it wasn't good, because it really is, but because sci-fi isn't usually my thing. It did take me a short time to get into it because of that. But once things got rolling, it was all uphill from there! Don't let the term sci-fi scare you off. It's not so far out there that you won't be interested in it, I promise! Pinky promise. It's a suspenseful, somewhat dark, sci-fi love story. And no, it's probably not whatever is running through your head right now. Actually, I can guarantee it isn't whatever you are thinking right now. Lies. This book is based on lies. Lies, lies and more lies. There are so many lies that your head will spin. You won't know who the good guys are and aren't. I loved it! Your head will be spinning around and around throughout the entire book. Is this a love story? Absolutely. Does it have a tinge of government conspiracy? Yeppers. Will it keep you on the edge of your seat? You bet! I guess I should explain just a little about the book instead of the over-vagueness. I just can't seem to figure out how, but I will try. The good guys seem to be the bad guys and the bad guys seem to be the good guys.... But are they all bad guys? That is what Lauren is trying to figure out; her life depends on it, literally. She doesn't know where to turn, who to turn to. No one seems to tell her the truth. All the while, the microchip inside her is so foreign, so scary. She doesn't know if the chip will kill her or someone close to her that she has always trusted. The characters in this book are lovable and hate-able all at the same time. The web of lies creates a constant illusion of the characters throughout the entire book. Each character is portrayed perfectly. Their relationships with one another are described so well. I could see the book play out in my head. I think you get what I am desperately trying to say... This is a book you want to read, even if you didn't know you wanted to read it. Trust me. You do. I promise that you won't be disappointed, and you will want book two in your hands almost immediately!
Where do I begin? I had such high hopes for this book. I am a sci-fi/fantasy nut pair it with some steamy romance, and I am usually hooked. The premise of this story was so promising. I loved the idea of having a prototype that could control the world in their head. So kudos to the author on having a fresh idea for once.
In the beginning of this book I was getting all of the hooks. The author was doing such a fine job of putting mystery into the story for the set up, however something was missing for me. I felt like I was reading clipped sentences all of the time. I never once had any feelings or emotions towards any of the characters. I tried I really tried, but it just didn't happen. My heart broke trying to push through. About 40ish percent I thought things might turn around. (Sometimes they do at the half) Alas we have another instant love connection that can't be denied. Guy meets girl. Girl can't resist guy, and a day or two later they are in love and can't stay out of each others pants. Not to mention the dialogue at this point is less then stellar. I feel this book had SO much potential, but the execution was off. Perhaps a few good beta readers could have helped turn this story into what the author was wanting to show us.
Gretchen is beyond amazing at what she does! This story took you to a whole other world that you just didn't want to leave. I always feel a connection with her characters and get lost in the story they're telling. Most books it takes me a few chapters to really get into the story, the characters and how the author writes but not Gretchen she has me completely engulfed in everything within the first two pages. I couldn't put this book down there was suspense and romance and it had me wanting more from the start. I can't wait to see what comes next! Keep doing what you doing!
I remember absolutely loving this book the first time I read it, but the 2nd time around I couldn't get over the insta-love and how ridiculous it was. It's good and I enjoyed the premise, but falls a little flat.
I am always so impressed how some people’s minds work. How they are so well equipped in the creativity forefront. Gretchen De La O is one of these people. Her romantic suspense, Prototype is imaginative and entertaining. I love how she takes our day to day technologies, ones we can’t seem to live without and intertwines into a futuristic adventure.
Lauren is the main female protagonist in this out of the box concept. A beautiful CIA agent who is ridden with a massive infatuation for her boss, she gets herself into a heaping pile of mess because she is unable to say no. This leads her to be tangled up in a dangerous situation involving deceit, greed, and murder. But what comes about amidst all of the chaos is one sexy as sin man by the name of Alejandro. The name alone oozes sensuality. I enjoyed every single moment with this man, a definite book boyfriend to add to my every growing list. There was just something so honest about him. Topped off with his divine good looks and tight body, I was a goner. The chemistry between Lauren and Alejandro was so intense I found myself squirming in my seat. I swear, if you put your hand against my cheek, you’d feel the heat these two were causing me.
Though the plot had such a great concept, what I had the most trouble with was Lauren’s character. I felt like she was way too naïve for being a CIA agent. Nowhere did she show any kick ass CIA skills throughout this book and I just couldn’t look past that. Heroines are a definite make it or break it element for me and how I wish that her character was written in conjunction with the plot. I had a bit of a difficult time with the mental dialogue and I have to admit that I am not a big fan of internal dialogue to begin with. Aside from these two factors, I thought Prototype was entertaining and what I loved most about this was the concept that went behind it. I can only imagine the courage that the author had to release such a unique novel to a smut crazed book world.
I look forward to finding out how this all comes about with high hopes for Lauren's character and of course much more of Alejandro.
Prototype sounded like it was my type of book: a strong heroine, two guys vying for her, and a spy element with mystery. Prototype started with these things but did not work out for me. Lauren, the main character, was supposed to be strong but then was basically run over by all the men in her life. She is supposed to be a CIA type agent but didn't really seem to possess those types of skills. The storyline is really all over the place. There are several different men in her life: Marshall, her boss, who Lauren has loved for a long time; Roger, a co-worker who Lauren trusts; and Alejandro, a dangerous man she meets while on a mission. I never felt connected to Lauren or understood her motivation for doing several of the things she did. Some of the parts made absolutely no sense to me (ie. someone is imminent danger but she waits until morning to go help). The love story between her and Alejandro held the most promise, however, besides some good moments, their relationship never clicked for me. There was too much confusion and no clear motivation for why things were happening in the story itself. I had hoped for Prototype to be a good book for me but alas it was not.
"I'm so twisted up by you that I can't even find a way to breathe when you aren't with me."
Overall, I enjoyed this story.
The story was a thriller, insta-love story mixed with a touch of futuristic sci-fi.
Lauren is a tough-nut, CIA agent with a vulnerable heart. Alejandro is a ruthless businessman with a vulnerable heart. Neither have had time or inclination for relationships, but when they meet, the chemistry between them is palpable.
The plot is intricate, there are a handful of key characters, and it's hard to tell who can be trusted, and there are plenty of surprising revelations along the way, as well as towards the end.
The premise of the prototype technology was interesting and intriguing, and I would like to read the sequel to see exactly where the author goes with the storyline, and the evolution of the prototype.
Now I'm a romantic at heart. And I usually stick to that genre. Because well, I'm in love with love, and love a happy ending. Sappy but true. Gretchen found a lovely (see there's that word again) balance between sci-fi and romance. Prototype keep me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Full of suspense, twisted lies, romance, hot model looking latin man, bad guys/good guys, leaving you not knowing who anyone really is or if they are trust worthy. And just when I thought I had it figured out the joke was on me. I can't wait for book 2. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I don't know what I just read. It got to the point where I started skipping pages. She's supposed to be a bad a** CIA agent with a computer in her head that makes her stronger and smarter, but instead she is this flighty man obsessed clumsy woman. The story didn't flow for me. I felt like it was bouncing around and not filling in the blanks.
It was not what I expected. There are so many twists and turns in this book. Who do you believe, who do you trust? Kinda bummed that I have to wait to see what happens next, but I will have to see it through as there are too many unanswered questions.
