The stories in Stranded share a common thread of people being, well, stranded. The ways of it are not the same but all suffer from being left behind or unable to move forward. As with any anthology, I liked some more than others but this time, I loved a couple!

• Craving Stains by Alina Popescu – 3 hearts. This was sad for the most part and confusing, as well. Hopefully, Wynn’s mother gets what’s coming to her. I wanted to know – why did she bother and the how of Doyle?

• Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas Rated 5 hearts. This is the story of Felix and Shep in love and lovers before Felix’s big break on TV. Felix has a surprise planned for Shep, alas, Shep isn’t going to make it. Told in a series of flashbacks promoted by the airport fiasco, the story explains Shep’s fear, which I found realistic, and makes Felix just that much better. I liked them both and the writing was just my style “Felix had been so eager, bless the little beaver…” Adorable.

• Standby by Kim Fielding Rated 4 hearts. I felt so bad for Tom at the beginning, not “hip” enough for the job he’s flown out to interview for, even though he is creative and works hard. He’s down about it and when he accidentally meets a thirtyish, handsome man, Rafael, while on standby at the airport, “I like to watch the airplanes”, it’s enough to improve his day. There is something different about Rafael, and something endearing. This is a fantasy story, even though Tom’s biggest fantasy is for “True love. Mushy pet names. Stupid in-jokes that annoy everyone else”. I so loved that about Tom – he just wants someone to love. Rafael, for his part, charming, and together, so cute! “Rafael’s lack of experience at kissing showed – they bonked noses at first…” That made me smile.

• The Raider by Asta Idonea Rated 3.5 hearts. Viking turns good? I mean, he and his comrades did pillage the village to start and it was only his injury and being left behind that made a change. But Thorstein does make a turn and his meeting with Godwin is the key. For his part, Godwin is gentle, kind and lonely. I liked their getting to know each other, Viking aspect sort of a side thing after the initial.

• The Buckle by Rob Colton Rated 3.5.

• Ari by Nephylim Rated 4. A transgender story with an amazing little brother, a complete asshat of a father and a social butterfly imp named Ari. It has to be read to be appreciated, but those feeling on the outside have hope in this story.

• Opposites Attract by Lily G. Blunt Rated 3 hearts Chris and Andreas are an established couple who don’t really seem to have much of a connection. I mean, they seem to want to do things for each other (getting a picture of the eagle, for example), but didn’t really seem like a dedicated couple to me.

• Dating for Deafies by Nikka Michaels Rated 4.5 hearts. I liked Evan, a deaf man who has sort of put himself on the outskirts because it’s too hard to not care when things happen, like the blind date who showed up, realized Evan is deaf and just walked off. Asshat! But when he gets an accidental email from an author he respects, it’s the beginning of a great thing. I liked the writing here as well, as it made this guys approachable, funny and a delight to read. And I’ve been a fangirl, so Evan, I understand!

• One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons Rated 4 Hearts. Saved after a breakdown on a snowy highway, in completely weather-inappropriate clothes after a disaster of a date, by a “knight in a white van”. This one probably had more sex than the others in the anthology but it was sweet nonetheless.

• The Climb by kirifox Rated 3 Hearts. Historical, well time travel, really, but the writing was a little too flowery for me, although Josiah and Jessie are decent characters. Time travel doesn’t work well for me because I just overthink it!

• Did You Leave Any For Me by Sarah Hayes Rated 4.25 Hearts. Take an established couple who have broken up, add resentment and taking for granted, and get them accidentally locked in a hotel room and mix well. My heart hurt a couple times for Oliver, who really did try to be supportive and be there for Shay, his ex-boyfriend. Sheridan just took it as his due and that was that. But being locked in makes them do some soul-searching and it was not a “jump in bed and all is well” type of things, which I so appreciated.

• Sweetness and Strength by J.N. Olsen Rated 3.5 Hearts. Stood up by his date (who has the audacity to text hour later!) , this is an easy story of Miles, a man afraid to trust much after being cruelly dumped by his ex, and the beautiful waiter who takes care of him after the no show blind date.

First a note that I have a story in this collection - just for transparency.

However, I also worked on copy edits for the other stories in this anthology and can promise you a fun compilation of a range of tales looking at the idea of being stranded from many different angles.

Craving Stains by Alina Popescu
An immune compromised young man dreams of leaving his sterile world to find adventure but instead is controlled by his mother into remaining a prisoner. Through his dreams he finds escape into the arms of a man…
**
Pretty interesting idea, not developed enough in this short story, so it comes off choppy and confusing. 2.5/5 stars

Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas
An established couple, Felix and Shep, try to re-unite for a surprise party but the airlines keep them apart. Finally, Felix can’t stand it and takes things into his own hands to give Shep the night of his life.
**
Very sweet, funny, lots packed into this short story, very well done. 4/5 stars
Standby by Kim Fielding
An angel and a man are stranded in the airport, waiting for their chance to fly. Together they find that they may be able to help one another in more ways than one.
**
Interesting, touching, fairly complete, thought it would be better in a slightly longer story. 3.5/5 stars
The Raider by Asta Idonea
A Viking is killed and left for dead, standed on an enemy island. He is healed by the enemy and rescued, they end up lovers.
**
Pretty sweet and very sentimental, interesting concept. 3.5/5 stars

The Buckle by Rob Colton
A man is “stranded” at a bar by his brother and gets the night of his life with the bartender/owner of the bar.
**
Pretty typical Rob Colton story, hot, sexy, fun, not much plot.
3/5 stars
Ari by Nephylim
A “person” goes to a convention where they meet another “person” whom they have only met on the internet. Things are chaotic, but both “people” are attracted to one another and even though neither is exactly male or female, they find love. They consider themselves stranded between sexes.
**
Strange. Kind of hard to follow. Interesting idea. 2.5/5 stars

Opposites Attract by Lily G. Blunt
An established couple on vacation stretch their personal limits to prove their love for one another and end up stranded in a cabin.
**
Mostly sweet, a little sexy, a little touching, not very exciting. 3/5 stars

Out of Order by Eric Gober
Two old lovers end up re-united after an earthquake leaves them stranded together.
**
This story crams a lot into a few pages and I think it would have been better to expand it into a novella. Too busy. Too many big topics covered in too little space. 2/5 stars

Dating for Deafies by Nikka Michaels
Super cute story about a deaf man who gets an accidental email from a fellow author that turns into a mistaken blind date.
**
Interesting story with unique MCs, well developed though short, sweet, as usual wish it were slightly longer.
4/5 stars.
One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons
A musician leaves a blind date and ends up stuck on a country road in the snow to be rescued by a man who he thinks could never be interested in a guy like him.
**
Sweet, sexy, short story about “judging books by their covers”. 3.5/5 stars

The Climb by kirifox
A man tired of the dating scene goes hiking with friends only to end up time travelling to 1791 where he meets the man of his dreams.
**
Very well written, full story, well told, happy ending. 4.5/5

Did You Leave Any For Me by Sarah Hayes
An established couple are fighting and end up stranded in a hotel room together to work out their problems.
**
Ok. Not as interesting as the others. 2.5/5 stars

Sweetness and Strength by J.N. Olsen
A man is stood up on his blind date and is stranded in a restaurant by himself until he gets picked up by his waiter.
**
Cute, a little sexy, sweet story, not terribly fascinating. 3/5 stars
Review:

Short stories either are or are not your thing. If you like them, you will probably enjoy this anthology as well. Most of these stories rated about a 3- 3.5 of 5 stars. The stand outs are Dating for Deafies and The Climb and Say Cheese, which were well-told, very well thought-out and complete stories, though short, that I really enjoyed.
Overall Impression:

3 stars – It was good

****Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance****

Overall I give this anthology a 3.75, I only wrote reviews for the following, but my fellow Prism Team members did the rest!

The Raider by Asta Idonea

Rating: 2.75 Stars

The Raider is a very short story about a Viking being rescued by a young Englishman. We see it from Thorstein’s perspective and though the time line spans a year, there is very little detail of this time. It was hard to feel connected to the characters as we really know nothing of Godwin other than he is a sheep farmer and Christian. I did appreciate that it took a while for the two to get to know one another and liked that they didn’t just fall into bed together. I just would have liked to know them too.

Out of Order by Eric Gober

Rating: 4 Stars

Set during the earthquake of 1987 in San Francisco, two old friends find each other stranded in the city and reconnect. Also during this time, the AIDs epidemic was in full swing and we see how a few dealt with it. I liked both characters and the storytelling was good. A lot of information was conveyed without overwhelming the reader. Although this is not a time period that I enjoy, I would love to read more from this author.

Did You Leave Any For Me by Sarah Hayes

Rating: 4.75 Stars

Sometimes, getting locked in a room with your ex is a good thing. This story was wonderful. The snark of the pair at the beginning and the way it subtly started to change. The humor of the hotel trying to get the door open made this light, and the ending was hopeful.

What I love most about anthologies are all of the short stories. I love short stories because you’re less likely to become bored or uninterested in the story being told. I love that with an anthology you get the chance to read stories by some of your favorite authors and experience finding new ones.

I picked up Stranded because I saw that Rob Colton had a story in it. I absolutely love his books and wasn’t about to miss a chance at reading one. I’m so glad I did.

There were many incredible stories in this anthology. All about people being stranded in one way or another. We have a guy stranded in his home, a few stranded at the airport, stranded in a bar, on a mountain, in another time and even one stranded in their own body.

Here are a few of my faves.

Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas – This one was funny. Poor Shep and his airport troubles.

The Buckle by Rob Colton – HOT! HOT! HOT!

Opposites Attract by Lily G. Blunt – Two totally opposite men who love each other more than anything. So sweet.

The Climb by kirifox – This was so wonderful. I even cried a bit. A man goes camping with friends and ends up thrown back in time. *sigh* I want more time travel stories.

All in all, I really enjoyed this anthology. I even found some new authors to check out. If your looking for a short, sweet and an incredibly hot read, go ahead and buy Stranded. It has 13 awesome short stories. You don’t even have to read them all in one day. Spread them out and enjoy yourself.

Stranded, an anthology by Wayward Ink Publishing, is an amazing book that incorporates 13 short stories written by a variety of authors. Each one is a unique and different take on men who are separated from the rest of the world by one form or another. Some may be a twist on a similar theme while other’s can be something completely different. Regardless of why they have been stranded, I found myself loving each story individually.

While each one is written by a different author, I found myself enjoying each one and they all were very well written. Some pulled more at my heart strings than others but I can’t honestly say I liked one over any other. They were all amazing stories that kept the reader engaged and wanting more.

For example Alina Popescu’s short, Craving Stains. This was a very interesting tale about a young male who was separated from the rest of the world by his mother and secluded in a sterile apartment that he was not allowed to leave. I found myself having a very deep loathing for the mother in the story and rooting for the young male in finding his love in the real world. I won’t give anything away because you have to read the story for yourselves.

Each story was lovely and a wide range from sci-fi to contemporary to historical and a wide range in between. I don’t typically give 5 stars for a book but I definitely give this anthology this rating. Pick up the book and give it a spin. You won’t be disappointed.

This was just a fantastic book from the first short to the last short. I usually don't give 5 Stars to anthologies on the grounds that I am reading a huge book containing short stories, but this was different.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas

Rating: 3.5 Stars

This story is about Shep and Felix and told in flashbacks between how they met, memorable points in their lives and what is currently happening to them. When they met they were both on a pretty even keel but Felix has big plans for his future which involve making it big as an actor.

His dreams are realised but Shep is happy doing what he is doing. He is also happy and very much in love with Felix but he does worry that Felix may find bigger and better, as he has done with his career. Felix is currently waiting for Shep to get home and has a huge surprise planned that will once and for all show Shep just how serious he is.

It appears everything is against them as Shep jumps from one disaster to another and the simple task of flying home turns into an epic tale. As he sits around waiting for his flight he muses on past events from their relationship. His fears are very real but then so is the love Felix feels for him and something as small as not being able to get on his flight is going to keep these two men apart.

Ari by Nephylim

Rating: 4 Stars

There was such feeling in this story. A small glimpse into the life of Benji as he embraces the life he believes is his. His recovery from his mothers death, his rejection from his father who can only see what was and not what is and the absolute love and support of a younger brother. Then there is Ari, gender fluid, vivacious and struggling with his place in the world.

One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Short and sweet. Keith is a singer whose name is just starting to get known and noticed. He is desperate for the love of a good man but every date he goes on the men are more interested in his singing and fame than they are in him.

After another disastrous date that he cuts short he crashes his car in the snow and is left stranded in the middle of nowhere with no way of raising the alarm. Luckily for him Mike comes along in his white van, his knight in shining armour, and rescues him from his freezing car. I loved Keith’s inner dialogue that seemed to be run permanently in this HFN ending.

Craving Stains by Alina Popescu -

Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas -

Standby by Kim Fielding 2 stars - Let me start by saying that I generally really like Kim Fielding's books... but unfortunately, this one just did not work for me. The ending saved it a bit but my basic issue is that this was insta-love times infinity. They literally "feel" a jolt when they touch and then must immediately get it on. I actually read the beginning, skipped the sex scene because I had zero emotional connection with these guys and was honestly just bored, and then read the ending which had an interesting little twist. Sorry Kim!

The Raider by Asta Idonea -

The Buckle by Rob Colton 3.5 stars - I've read (and loved) other stuff by Rob Colton, so I knew going in to expect a big bear doing dirty stuff to a sweet young guy, and I was not disappointed! While this story is mostly sex, it builds the beginnings of a sweet HFN/start of a relationship, and was just right for what I was in the mood for.

Ari by Nephylim -

Opposites Attract by Lily G. Blunt -

Out of Order by Eric Gober -

Dating for Deafies by Nikka Michaels -

Craving Stains by Alina Popescu - the story was too short for the idea. Too many unanswered questions. And I honestly don't know how the story ended. Left me unsettled.
Say Cheese by Michael P. Thomas - Very cute existing relationship story with flashback. Fun.
Standby by Kim Fielding - I'd have liked this to be longer.
The Raider by Asta Idonea - I liked this. Although I had to wonder about how quickly they learnt to communicate.
Out of Order by Eric Gober - Set in the late eigthies I could really feel the time period in this one. Great story of old friends reconnecting in an era where so many were dying too young.
Dating for Deafies by Nikka Michaels - Very cute story of a deaf man who opens an email by mistake.
One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons- assumptions can be misleading.
Did You Leave Any For Me by Sarah Hayes - breathing life into a dead relationship.

the first story confused me so badly, I'm still not sure if there was an ending on that or if it is continued in a longer story. aside from that i enjoyed the stories. i like the way the stories of stranded weren't just the usual definition of Stranded.
