I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.
I know only pain and survival.
That is until the Cappo's sister walked into my life.
And changed everything.

She's a light who makes my darkness darker, her smile makes my heart turn to ice, and I can't escape the fear her seductive looks instill--knowing it's only a matter of time before I fail--again, and take her for myself.
This is the story of my redemption.
But it's not pretty...I died, and now I'm alive, but not living, breathing but not surviving. I am Phoenix De Lange, son to a murdered mob boss, estranged brother, horrible friend, monster in the making, newest leader to one of the most powerful families in the Cosa Nostra.
And I will have my vengeance.
Or die trying.
I am Phoenix De Lange.
Death is all I know.
Until she offers me a piece of life--I can't resist taking.

I’m hooked on this series! I’m so glad I picked it up again after leaving it for a year! This is book 5 in the Eagle Elite series, and this instalment is about Phoenix and Bee. The shocking thing is that I thought that Phoenix would never be able to redeem himself...After all in the first book he was known for rape, murdering, and torture. Phoenix enjoyed being evil too. I love how authors can turn an anti- hero like Phoenix, into a person whom I can feel sorry for, and eventually fall in love with who he has become. This happened with Phoenix, and all I could think was he deserved someone who would love him unconditionally. Bee ended up being that woman for him!

My reason for four stars instead of five was that Bee often came across as a little too desperate, and immature at times. I will admit she annoyed me quite often! I did like how she was the only one who stuck up for Phoenix though!!

This mafia series just keeps getting better and better! I love the comraderie that the young boss men have with each other! There is a lot of humour in how they behave with one another! Their loyalty to each other is inspiring as well! In these instalments we get violence, action, sex, and love! There are a ton of secrets that come out too! If you are a reader who enjoys mafia romances, then you must give this series a go!!!

This would have been me last night (if it hadn't been the middle of the night and my baby boy wasn't sleeping :P):

description

I freaking loved Ember and I love Rachel Van Dyken for the way she made me love Phoenix...a thing I could have never imagined because of what he did in the beginning of the series.

So I did my happy (internal) dance and savored every moment of this novel because it just made my top 3 novels from this series (thing I never thought possible).

description

If you're an Eagle Elite fan (like yours truly) then you should read this book immediately because it rocks and all the hot bad boys and the bad ass girls from the previous novels are present, we (of course) get to live Bee and Phoenix's story and find more about Sergio and why he betrays his family.

description

If you haven't read The Eagle Elite series then you should start and don't stop until you get to this book :D

There's no point for me to get into the blurb of this novel because it's intertwined with the other books in the series...but Phoenix's transformation from villain to...well not hero because they're the mafia for God's sakes...but to a better man was thrilling and the way Bee never gave up on him no matter what was a testament of true love.

description

Rachel Van Dyken well done once again and I'm looking forward to see what you do with Sergio's story and how you'll pull that one off :D

I don't know what it is about this series that just clicks with me, but I have to say Phoenix's book may be my favourite out of all the books. If you know the series you'll remember the time when Phoenix tried to force himself on Trace, back then I new he was getting his own book and I wondered how the hell he would redeem himself. Thankfully his character really did redeem himself, obviously it was not an easy road and sometimes I felt like everyone was against him but then again knowing what he did I couldn't blame them.

I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.
I know only pain and survival

Phoenix De Lange is now the ruling Boss of the Nicolasi crime family, unfortunately the family want nothing to do with him. But the fact that Phoenix has set a formidable reputation for himself helps. Apart from his responsibilities as a Boss, he's also been given the task of being Bianka (Tex's sister) Campisi's, bodyguard. There was a lot of angst surrounding Bee and Phoenix's relationship. For Bee, Phoenix is the first guy who's ever treated her right, the first friend she's ever had and also the man who protected her from her abusive father. Phoenix's self worth as been spiraling down since he came back, he doesn't feel good enough to be loved. His friends bless them but they don't help either. Bee is the first person to look past the horrifying things he did for his family.

Aside from Bee and Phoenix's story we also get a POV from Sergio, and the next book, Elude is his book. I'm not sure if I'll be able to read since the ending is not a guaranteed happy one. Other than that, this was another stellar installment in the Eagle Elite Series. There were some seriously funny moments, it's not an Elite Book unless people are shooting at each other.

"You are everything." His full lips trembled as he spoke. "You are everything that's beautiful and pure in this world, and you deserve so much better than this life, than what any of us have to offer. Than what I have to offer."

5 Rise from the Ashes Stars

Let’s get the big elephant out of the room. Phoenix is a rapist. I can get over the killing and maybe the female beating, but rape? **CRINGE**

I didn’t think I could do it. I mean I had my doubts from the very first book.

BUT…

I love **GASP** Phoenix De Lang!!!

Crazy. I know. But Rachel Van Dyken can write some really good stuff. After five books, I still love this series and I’m salivating for more.

It’s Phoenix’s story. So, he was forced to rape and abuse girls throughout his childhood life. This has given Phoenix some major daddy issues and well general issues all around.

He’s nervous around girls and has ZERO intentions of starting anything with anyone.

Now, he must protect Tex’s sister, Bee.

Bee, a girl who has a major crush on Phoenix.

I love BEE! She’s too cute, she’s adorable and I love how positive she is. The thing that I love so much about Ember is that I felt like Rachel Van Dyken was going back to the roots of the story. We are back to the school, classes and all the drama that is attached to going to college.

I love that stuff! While Bee goes to school, Phoenix acts as her bodyguard. Oh boy do I love this story line. I also love Phoenix and Bee’s dynamics.

Phoenix continually pushes Bee away (as he should because he’s kind of messed up) and Bee continues to push Phoenix’s buttons because well, it’s just too fun to read! I love how mean Phoenix is, but he isn’t mean like wow-I-really-hate-you mean, but more like wow-you-are-mean-oh-god-it-makes-me-want-you-more mean.

I’m serious people!

I could have read pages and pages of this stuff. Of course we still get tiny glimpses of the gang, Nixon, Chase, Tex and Sergio.

Ember was really fast pace and I felt like I never knew what was going to happen and probably because there was no foreshadowing!!!! It’s a pet peeve of mine, when I read a bit of foreshadowing at the beginning of the book, and somebody is very known for that (not naming names), BUT I didn’t get it in this one and that made me a SUPER DUPER HAPPY GIRL.

I love Ember, I love the series, I love Phoenix and I still love Rachel Van Dyken.

I can’t wait for Sergio’s book!!!!! (it’s the next one)

I went into this book fully expecting to hate the Hero since I just didn't think it would be possible to redeem Phoenix. But I was proven wrong in the best way possible and actually ended up loving him. He was so tortured by his past and it broke my heart to read about him struggling.

I loved that Bee was there to bring a little happiness into his life. I especially loved the fact that it wasn't an easy journey for them. It took the length of this book to build their characters up and I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't an overnight easy fix to make Phoenix and Bee happy.

I did want a little more information on Phoenix's past but I still had enough information to understand his character. So overall this book was one of my favorites from this series and definitely one I recommend reading. It's possible to read as a standalone but I think it's better to read the previous books first.

Got to say Rachel Van Dyken did a great job with Phoenix's story.
I didn't think I would be to feel anything except disgusted and hate for Phoenix De Lange after reading what he did in the previous books, but Rachel managed to make me feel sorry for him and even like him!!
Phoenix is the perfect example of tortured hero. He believes that he doesn't deserve any amount of happiness. Not love, not affection, not even food. It was heartbreaking watching Phoenix punish himself .

"Pushing her away was for the best.
because the only other option was holding her close.
And nobody wanted the monster to get the girl -
that wasn't how stories were told,
that was not how happy endings were found.
I deserved my darkness, and only a truly selfish individual
would be all right with tugging the innocent into hell with them."

Bianka (Bee) Campisi is such a great character!, she is sweet, innocent and funny. The banter between the two was so funny!
Loved how Bree was the only one who still believed in Phoenix and never gave up!
She saw passed his past and loved him for the man she knew he could be.

"I just..I want you to know that despite everything..
I believe in you.that's all."

Phoenix deserved his redemption and Bee was a great way to get him there.

Can't wait for Sergio's book.

If I keep saying that each of these books is better than the last, I feel like people aren't going to take me seriously. Or believe me. So, with that being said, I won't say it. I'll just... think it.

;)

This is definitely a tough book to get through. Don't believe me? Look at the blurb for goodness sake! Phoenix is beyond broken, and Bee is so damaged in her own right. It was amazing to see these two find themselves within each other and witness them grow and become better people. I didn't know if it was possible but I see Phoenix SO differently after this book. Pure genius. Plus, the guys reactions to these two is the best.

Now bring on Sergio and Andi!!! <3 Blood in, no out.

5 Sear-You-Alive Stars!!!

PLEASE read this series…for this book alone!! I love this whole series, but this book is in my top forever books. I never would have thought a book would come close to JR Ward’s Lover Awakened (Z & Bella!), which is one of my top forever books as well. I LOVE that Rachel Van Dyken continues to make me LAUGH and FEEL so much in this series. This mafia family has me wrapped around their crooked fingers.

Phoenix. He is more than just the dark, broody character. A few books ago, he did something unthinkable to another character….something absolutely terrible….the worst act. And somehow, they let him live. We find out in the previous book who truly spared him and gave him a second chance. He, of all people, should NOT have gotten a second chance. His new assignment was to infiltrate an enemy and guard the daughter of the enemy. Ugh, this is hard to review without spoiling!!! Anywho, of course, this girl ends up getting close to Phoenix. She is relentless. The only light that can penetrate his black soul. He doesn’t take it easy on her. In fact, he is downright cruel, but she is stronger than she seems.

Bee. She isn’t my typical favorite heroine. At first glance, she seems young and naïve, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what she wants. She hasn’t experienced much in life, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know who she loves. She is very much like Bella in Jr Wards’s book …. Not the most extraverted, but still has a backbone, and won’t let her desires be stifled by a man who is broken.

I love when an author makes me hate a character so much, then she turns around and makes me love that same character. Very few authors can make me do anything, let alone change my mind.

I never would have thought I could love Phoenix. I cannot resist a tortured hero. I knew he was tortured, and so I was naturally drawn to him, but I had no idea how the author was going to redeem him for what he did. I didn’t think there was any way he could be forgiven. I didn’t know if I could forgive him, and I wasn’t even the person wronged. Lol.

How many times have I read this book?....Probably 4 already. And I’m probably going to read it again after walking away from my computer. I have it on my bookshelf….I’m staring at it right now….must….read it….again.

5 STARS!

Eagle Elite Series keeps on getting better and better!  I loved it!
I've been a fan of this series since forever and I am a #solidTeamNixon. One thing I've felt while reading this is pride. I am so proud seeing how much each of the characters in this series have evolved!  i always call them my "Eagle Elite boys" but I think it doesn't fit them anymore and i am so not ready for that yet.
Ember is one of my favorite Eagle Elite book yet but I have to say I will always be #TeamNixon (I need to keep on saying this) anyways,  the reason I love this book is because if there's someone who totally needs redemption, it would be Phoenix.
Phoenix have been through a lot, fights his demons every single day and I really think he needs to be saved.
My love for Bree is unexpected! I admire her love for Phoenix and her determination to save him. I wouldn't think of lasagna the same ever again.
All in all I am one happy fan...  I always. love HEA and you can alwaya find it in Rachel's book,  I can't hardly wait for the next book!

Phoenix DeLange and Bianka (Bee) Campisi...a match made in Heaven or Hell. The newly appointed head of the Nicolasi family and the Cappo's little sister. Two lonely, damaged people from dark, violent homes. They both have demons and are lacking connections. Bee just wants to be close to Phoenix even if it is just a as a friend, but she really wants more. But Phoenix is supposed to be guarding her and not touching her. And responding to his attraction could literally get him killed. So it is easier to avoid, deny, reject, and taunt her to try to push her away.

Nobody wanted the monster to get the girl--that wasn't how stories were told, that was not how happy endings were found. I deserved my darkness, and only a truly selfish individual would be all right with tugging the innocent into hell with them, She was heaven. She was light. And damn if I wasn't going to everything in my power to keep it that way.

His past with women is horrific. He knows he has done wrong and is capable of violence. It is what he was taught and all he's ever known. His nightmares and demons have a tight hold on him. But he does not want to be the monster he thinks he is, and he does not want to hurt Bee. But he can't stop the fact that she makes him feel and takes away the numbness he has been living in. But he is not safe for her and he knows it.

"I don't do warm fuzzies....I do scorching blazes...That sear you alive."

Bee has a funny, sparkling personality and exuberance for life. Now that she has more freedom, she just wants friends, to belong, and Phoenix. But at Eagle Elite people are either scared of her connections or out to manipulate her. And Phoenix has his hands full protecting her from others, and himself from her charms.

"You are everything that's beautiful and pure in this world, and you deserve so much better than this life, than what any of us have to offer. Than what I have to offer."

Phoenix struggles broke my heart. He was so crippled by his dark past and truly felt like was a monster, unworthy, uncontrolled, unlovable, and unable to be saved. And Bee brought little shafts of light into his dark existence, but he felt he darkened her. Not to mention the fact he was treading on this ice with her dangerous brother and the other bosses and families, and one wrong move could really end him. But I felt for him and his pain. He had such internal struggles between what was right and wrong in the situation.

Push, pull, hurt, rejection, need, resistance, fear, secrets, and guilt. Bee and Phoenix are one big complicated mess. But I loved them together. Phoenix was so deep into himself and wallowing in his guilt that he really was just existing and not living. And Bee was the type of personality that just kept pushing until she could find a crack in his armor to get in. And she was the only one that really saw him for his potential and not for who he was in the past.

As with any Eagle Elite book there is drama, bloodshed, danger, secrets, suspense, and betrayal. The plot line draws you in, keeps you guessing, and throws in all kinds of twists and surprises. It is told in Phoenix, Bee, and Sergio's points of view. It is hard to determine who can be trusted and who can't. No one of them is really all good or all bad, they are all a mixture of each teetering farther towards the bad side. But despite the violence, crime, and dirty deeds, they fiercely protect those they care about and love hard. I loved getting to spend time with all of the couples: Nixon and Trace, Chase and Mil, Tex and Mo, and the other family members Frank and Sergio. They add humor, tension, and drama to an already intense situation. I love that they are family and friends, yet not afraid to shoot or beat the crap out of each other if they deem it is needed.

Sergio also is a big part of this story line and he has his own issues going on that seem to get more and more complicated. Including a new girl who comes with her own set of issues. His book Elude was set up and I cannot wait for more of their story.

This is a story of loss, pain, self hate, guilt, love, hope, second chances, and redemption. I never really liked Phoenix in the beginning, and his reappearance intrigued me in the last couple of books. But in this one, he wormed his way right into my heart like only truly broken characters seeking redemption can. I was not sure Rachel Van Dyken would be able to pull it off, but she did an amazing job with his story. I think Phoenix and Bee have become my new favorite Mafia couple.

Three simple letters describe this book… WOW !! From the embers of an unlikely friendship sparks the story that proves Phoenix can rise from the ashes of his past. With Phoenix, Bee found the chance to live life, rather than just existing by someone else's rules.

I always say Rachel never ceases to amaze me, but with each book in this series, she surpasses my expectations. I knew going into Ember that it was going to be a tough read… it was Phoenix’s book. I knew about Phoenix’s past, I knew what he did, what he was capable of and I knew what haunted him. But I never expected to fall in love with his character in this book.

People are entitled to second chances, a chance at redemption. But with Phoenix, he didn’t believe he was entitled to either because of his past actions. He feels as though he should suffer… ALONE in life. Phoenix didn’t think he deserved happiness, he was supposed to live his life in hell. His heart no longer beat, he was a shell of a human being. He was punishing himself for all of his wrong doings. When he was given an assignment, he never imagined that this would be the assignment that would change his life forever.

In walks Bee, the Cappo’s sister. Bee is Phoenix’s assignment. Tex issues two orders… keep her safe and do not touch her. Two easy things you would think, but that was hardly the case. These were two things that Phoenix would struggle with.

Bee has had a rough life in Italy. She has no friends, she has always been alone. She has no family, other than her brother, Tex. Even though she has him, she is still alone. Nobody knows her, nobody has taken the time to get to know her. Nobody besides Phoenix when he was with her in Italy. Phoenix is Bee’s only friend. The only problem is, Phoenix doesn’t have any friends. He doesn’t allow himself to have friends. Bee and Phoenix may have a lot more in common than what they think.

Tempers flare between the two of them. Sparks definitely fly. Will a relationship be ignited between the two of them? Will Phoenix allow himself to be happy? Will Phoenix let Bee in? Will Bee be able to break down the walls that Phoenix built around him? When she finds out about his past, will she be able to see past that? Does Phoenix deserves a second chance at life? If he is given the opportunity, will he accept it?

Ember is AMAZING!!! I didn’t think Rachel was going to be able to top Elicit with the intensity, boy was I wrong. I could not put this book down as I was captivated from the first page. There are a few twists and turns in this book and a few jaw droppers.

The rest of the group did not let me down with their wicked sense of humors. I absolutely adore Chase and was thrilled to get a little more of him. To see Tex with Phoenix was hysterical. Karma is a bitch. He thought it was funny when he tormented Nixon with Mo. Paybacks are a bitch. Tex is getting a little dose of his own medicine here.

This is a MUST READ series!!!

I haven't read the previous books in this series except for Entice, and I think I'll keep skipping books in this series and only read those that grab my interest. And boy did the description of this book catch my mind and soul.
I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.

So, because I have not read the previous books, I had no clue about the relationship between Phoenix and his friends, especially Nixon and Trace. There was some information that Phoenix had kidnapped and tried to rape his best friend's girl...right.

description

Anyhow, Phoenix is broken, inside out. He's scarred from his past and sees no light in his future. But then there is Bee, the Cappos' sister. She's bright, young, and everything he should stay away from, so he uses cruel words to keep her away.
"How many times can a girl face rejection before the only way to find comfort is to close herself off from the very world that rejected her in the first place?"

Bee has loved Phoenix for a long time. He is her only friend, but she wants more. Phoenix, however, keeps rejecting her advances, not because he hates her but because he doesn't want to drag her into his dark and injured world.
“I believe in you," she blurted, tears in her eyes. "I just... I want you to know that despite everything... I believe in you."

But Phoenix's plans to stay away from Bee backfires when Tex, Bee's brother, assigns him as her bodyguard when she starts school. There was a lot of suspense, and the chemistry between Phoenix and his friends was excellent. It was Bee that I didn't fancy. She was kind of...too much? Her practically always clinging to Phoenix even when he was so cruel and when he went too far, she stayed away for maybe a day before she was back to drooling by his side.

“Warm fuzzies?"
"I don't do warm fuzzies."
Well, we can't win 'em all.
"I do scorching blazes," he muttered under his breath. "That sear you alive.”

Phoenix and the guys were the stars in this book. I absolutely loved this man even with such a broken soul; he was so strong. I was sad for him. He felt not to be worthy of Bee, not feeling worthy of light when that was what he deserved. And when he accepted his fate, his Bee, my heart was whole.

I got an ARC copy of Ember and I was absolutely captivated! I am a strong Trace and Nixon fan so for me to like a story as much as I loved Phoenix' s is a big deal. A lot of emotion, the right amount of humor, and a big chance for redemption... this book will have u getting yelled at by your significant other because "are you freaking kidding me right now?! I don't care if it's 4am and I'm crying and shaking the whole bed, I HAVE to see what happens!" Will be a conversation :) loved every page!

Review by Jen Hagen

I have come to enjoy every one of Ms. Van Dyken’s books about these crazy mafia kids. They never fail to crack me up. They wield their guns at each other like most kids would a lollipop. They shoot each other in the shoulder in anger whereas any other friend would just give you the finger and the f-bomb with maybe a gut punch thrown in. Even though they are mafia bosses, they still are young and maintain a sense of humor. I guess in their line of work they have to have a sense of humor or the darkness will overtake them. Such is the case of Phoenix. Out of all the characters introduced to us thus far, he is the one with the darkness – the one whom we should all despise because of his past despicable acts.

I’m evil. I raped girls.

Here is my disclaimer when it comes to Phoenix…I did not read book 1.5 where it is told from the guys’ POV. For some reason that book slipped through my radar and ended up in the hands of another reviewer. If I had read it, I am fairly certain that my perception of Phoenix would be somewhat different. I know he did horrid acts, and it is briefly told in this book along with the number of women he violated. But in this book I saw a lonely man, a man broken by his past and not being able to move forward because he does not feel like he is justified to feel anything but displeasure. He doesn’t even eat real food because that would be enjoyable and he does not feel he is worthy of enjoying anything. He is surviving on green produce blended into a shake.

Phoenix has been keeping watch over the head mafia boss’s sister – Bee. She’s a firecracker and is determined to get Phoenix to eat lasagna. She knows he would enjoy it but he fights her on every turn trying to fend off any enjoyment. The fight and pull towards each other becomes more than just about lasagna. Bee has feelings towards Phoenix but they are only one-sided because Phoenix would never allow himself to feel passion let alone be it with his boss’s sister.

Pushing her away was for the best. Because the only other option was holding her close. And nobody wanted the monster to get the girl – that wasn’t how stories were told, that was not how happy endings were found. I deserved my darkness and only a truly selfish individual would be alright with tugging the innocent into hell with them.

Phoenix is given a second chance at perfecting life and it made my heart swell with warmth, but the history behind his happiness made me sick.

“Redemption.”

As with all the other books in this series, there are secrets hidden and this one will rock the family to the core because of the betrayal. Phoenix is once again in the spotlight because of his past acts.

“Were you going to kill me? Would you have followed through with the plan?”

He didn’t hesitate, simply said, “Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to live.”

“And I don’t deserve to?”

“You’re Phoenix De Lange. When did you ever deserve life?”

Phoenix may have done despicable acts in the past, but now he is a changed man and is able to feel happiness. I can’t hold it against him because of his past (but again this may have been a different feeling had I read his POV) so I was extremely happy that he found the enjoyment and redemption in life once again.

I definitely want to stress the need to read book 1.5. I really felt lost without Phoenix’s backstory. There will be another book in the series featuring a character that no very little about…somebody who was a ghost and in hiding for year. I look forward to seeing these mafia men and their humor coming soon.

The first thing I will say is,
only RVD can make you sympathetic towards an ex-rapist *smh*

Phoenix is tortured and broken, a walking dead man. His upbringing was completely horrible. His father was the worst kind of man you could have raise you. Leader of drug and sex rings, raising his offspring to follow in his footsteps. What's worse is, Phoenix isn't like them, so it was pure torture to have to live like that, or die.

So he's given a second chance, by none other than Luca. After Luca's passing, Phoenix was given his seat at the head of the Nicolosi family table. With that honor comes secrets, lots of secrets he gets to keep, which means power.

Phoenix gets the honor of becoming Bee's personal body guard. She's such a little spit-fire and doesn't quit when the going gets tough, or the tough try to block her out. She's the only one who can see the good in him.

Individually, their stories are sort of similar, both having horrible parents and lots of loneliness. Tragic and angsty, I had more tears then not while reading this.

The story switch POV's from Phoenix, Bee, and Sergio ((seeing they all lived together)).

Sergio's side story? Well, let me just say it made me very mad. It's not my favorite and I was upset at the direction it went. I mean, first my Luca is taken, and now Sergio's most memorable asset, one of the main reasons I love him as a character. seriously.mad. I could only yell "WHY????" It was such a travesty.

When reading these, you always have to remember, RVD will ALWAYS give you a HEA....always. So when up and coming book 6, Elude, about Sergio and I won't say who comes about? You keep that in mind, because I think its going to be painful.

The Eagle Elite series just keeps getting better and better! Warning: if you haven't read the series, this review will contain spoilers.

I might have cried when I learned Phoenix was getting his own book. Even when I wanted to hate him in the first few books, I couldn't because I knew what a rough hand he'd been dealt in life. He made a lot of mistakes and Ember is about his redemption.

Phoenix can't forgive himself for his past actions and all the people he's hurt. Being assigned to watch after Bee (Tex's sister) is a nightmare for him because she makes him feel. And he knows he doesn't deserve to feel anything but pain.

This is actually a three person POV with the bulk being from Phoenix and Bee but Sergio has a few chapters as well. There are some twists and turns and the end of the book sets up Sergio's story which is up next.

Since this is a mafia book, there is the requisite gunfire and violence but the Eagle Elite series is not dark and is safe to read for everyone (I'd say 16+). The violence is toned down, there is little to no cussing and the sex scenes are not explicit.

Instead, we have a cast of characters I have loved from book one who we've been able to watch grow over the years. Chase is still my #1 but Phoenix is now coming in at a close second.

4.5 stars and please note this series must be read in order.

4.5 'character redemption' STARS

DUE FOR A RE-READ SOON

Originally read: May 2018
Re-read: SOON

description

Eagle Elite was my first try with mafia romances and I truly loved this series so much. Phoenix is a character who is broken beyond repair and walked through life with a chip on his one shoulder and had a cocky aura about him. I HATED him in the first book due to what he did to Trace. This story though definitely redeems him as a character and I now can say that he is one of my favorite ones from the EE world.

🎧 Format: Audio listen - told from dual POV. Overall, I enjoyed the narrations for both MCs.

STORY PLOT

*Disclaimer* This book is a part of a series and CANNOT be read as a standalone book. It picks up right after Elicit (Tex/Mo story).

Post the aftermath of everything that happened in Elicit, Phoenix De Lange (H) is now the boss of the Nicolasi crime family, who wants nothing to do with him. Even though he has set a formidable reputations, his sins still haunt him everywhere he goes. Phoenix has the weight of the world on his shoulders and Tex (who was one of his best friends and now Capo of the Costa Nostra) assigns him the task of being his little sister's bodyguard — Bianka 'Bee' Campisi (h). As for Bee, Phoenix is the first friend she ever had and overall the first person to treat her right. Bee also wants to crack Phoenix's hard exterior that he was trying to use to keep others at arms length... to keep them safe from him. Phoenix's past doesn't matter to her because she sees past the ugliness and accepts & loves him for who he is. The problem though is even if Phoenix let Bee in, he would be waiting at the end of a barrel as not everyone, specifically, the Capo can't see past his sins and accept them together. Will they make it or will their love end in heartache and bloodshed?

"Blood in, no out."

✞———————————❖———————————✞

MAIN CHARACTERS

Phoenix

He went from the worse character to the damage tragic hero you can't help but love. Super quick.

I honestly did not think he could be redeemable buttttt here I am crying over his past and how much he does actually care for others. He felt that his past actions needed severe consequences and chose to drown in his pain & punish himself for how he acted in the past. He also thought that he needed to keep those he cared about at arm's length since he is not a good man and has done unforgivable things. It seems that the rest of the family is okay with how he is and chose to overlook his pain, except Bee. She sees him for who he is now as the person who is trying to be better. Bee also does NOT DEFINE him by his past sins or how he treated the family in the past which I thought was remarkable.

Their relationship - Phoenix never loved anyone romantically before as love was a foreign concept to him growing up. His love with Bee was intense, emotional, and raw. Lastly, I felt that for him to truly love something/someone, he had to be put back together and someone had to stick by him which Bee was that person.

*swoon worthy couple of the mafia*

Bee

Generally, I liked her as a character but I do feel that she was immature, annoying, and desperate at times as she would literally throw herself at Phoenix. This was why I took a 0.5 off the rating cause I found myself frustrated at times with her. But another side of me was all for her doing what she was doing cause she broke through to him and he wasn't spiraling out of control in his emotional turmoil/self-loathe.

Also, I know her naiveté could be viewed as annoying but I took another view on it. She was so sheltered and had ZERO FRIENDS, so she did not know any better in those situations. Basically, Bee's time with Phoenix gave her a chance to experience new things and grow as a person.

Overall~

I recommend you check out this series! This book also foreshadow to Sergio's book which is next in this series. I have attempted to read that book but ended up putting it on hold as I found myself having a difficult time getting through his story with Andi. Time will tell if I finish it, who knows I might just pick it up again! I digress though. On a final note, Ember is one of my all-time favorite from this series and I feel that it has the right amount of angst, character/story development, and romance woven into this heartbreaking story.

"I don't need perfect." He held me tighter. " I just need you. Always. Promise not to ever let me go." His voice was desperate. "I know it sounds weak, but I'm so sick of trying to look strong, trying to be strong. God, Bee, I just need you to let me be weak in this moment and tell you that you're the reason I'm able to breathe a little easier every day. You're the reason my heart's able to beat without shattering in my chest." He sighed. "I guess what I'm saying is...you've brought me back to life - and after being dead so long - I'm terrified." ~ Phoenix DeLange

Who would have ever thought that Phoenix DeLange would ever turn out to be so incredibly beautiful that he could even say something that emotional?

Let's face it. In the big picture of the Eagle Elite, Phoenix was definitely no Nixon or Chase. He was more sinister and darker than the others. After what he did to Trace, did anyone really think he would be able to redeem himself? I for one did not think it was possible. But he did. Of course I think everyone was surprised when Phoenix came back because well after everything he did, I thought someone offed him.

So when Phoenix comes back, he brings Tex's little sister Bee with him. Apparently when we thought Phoenix was dead, he was only in Italy baby sitting. Bee is this adorable, bouncy little thing and you get the feeling right away that she's interested in being more than being Phoenix's friend.

Phoenix wants no part of that. In his brain he doesn't deserve to be happy because of the horrible things he's done in his life. As a child, he watched his father brutalize women. As he grew older his father expected Phoenix to do the same things. He basically tried to take the humanity out of Phoenix and in some ways he succeeded.

Even though Ember is basically the story of Phoenix and Bee, there's a lot of Sergio in this book. Sergio who is supposed to be a ghost, has been more and more involved in family business. And I can't lie, I'm not really crazy about Sergio. First he tried to take Mo from Tex and now, he's just this kind of sketchy, untrustworthy character.

Ok, so there are a bunch of things going on. Phoenix is basically acting as Bee's bodyguard to keep her safe. Phoenix is also struggling with the knowledge that Luca has left him to take over the Nicolasi family and everything it entails. He doesn't think he's ready for that. Then there's a little matter of the FBI. Yeah, there's something shady going on there, but you'll have to read it to find out.

Back to Phoenix. I know how horrible he was, but he's truly doing penance for it now. He seriously denies himself any happiness. He works out like crazy daily. He eats only these nasty green protein shakes. When Bee tries to feed him lasagna, he gets physically sick from it. He definitely deserves a second chance. He's plagued by nightmares of his past. And of course, who tries to get him through the nightmares? Of course Bee.

Obviously, you get the picture that Phoenix has feelings for Bee, but a relationship of any sort is off limits for him. Tex let's him know he's only allowed to look at Bee and not touch her. And Phoenix is so afraid of his darkness, he denies himself something he knows would make him happy.

He tries so desperately to warn Bee away, but the more he pushes her away, the stronger she comes back to him. And as you can see by the quote, Bee becomes Phoenix's person. He tries and tries but he realizes it's Bee for him.

There are some tense moments wondering whats going on with the FBI. They want to take these families down and they'll use anyone they can to make that happen. Loyalties will be tested and people you thought were the truest, turn into the enemy.

All this is done of course with an incredible sense of humor. Sunday dinners are always a good laugh. Random shootings because the boys are mad at each other are not unusual. And let's face it, our young newlywed couples are always sneaking off to get busy.

So yes, Phoenix DeLange redeems himself for the sins of his past. I would have never thought I would be able to consider Phoenix a book boyfriend, but you'll see he is just so beautifully damaged you can't help but fall in love with him.

Yes, Rachel Van Dyken, you've done it again. I absolutely love the Eagle Elite Series. It's edgy, it's sexy, it's funny with a healthy helping of danger tucked in. A five lip smack review for Ember. What's next?? I can't wait to find out.

“It was getting harder and harder to ignore her warmth – when I lived in a constant state of near-death cold.”

Wow. My gosh this book is indescribable! What a phenomenal, intense read!

I hated Phoenix in Elite but since he reappeared in Elicit, his thoughts, his actions made me gradually like him more and more. Ember has been a long wait and I can tell you this book is my favourite in the Eagle Elite series. It pulled me right in from the start, captivating me with its evocative journey of redemption and forgiveness.
“You are everything.” His full lips trembled as he spoke. “You are everything that’s beautiful and pure in this world, and you deserve so much better than this life, than what any of us have to offer. Than what I have to offer.”

I am completely and utterly in love with Phoenix. Granted, i did feel weird at the beginning when i thought about his past sins, especially his behaviour in Elite but damn did he redeem himself. As it states in the book, Phoenix is the perfect name for him, he is like a mythical bird that is reborn and risen from the ashes.
“Promise not to ever let go.” His voice was desperate. “I know it sounds weak, but I’m so sick of trying to look strong, trying to be strong, God, Bee, I just need you to let me be weak in this moment and tell you that you’re the reason I’m able to breathe a little easier every day. You’re the reason my heart’s able to beat without shattering in my chest.” He sighed. “I guess what I’m saying is… you’ve brought me back to life — and after being dead so long — I’m terrified.”

When describing the hero in many new adult books, they fall under the category of 'tortured bad boy' when they're clearly not as damaged as the authors want us to think. It really bugs me. Anyway in this case, i must say Phoenix can rightfully be described as deeply tortured, he is the epitome of a tortured hero.
“Everyone loves a bit of darkness – until it consumes them.”

What is it about about that aspect that leaves me wanting more, it's like those sort of heroes will always leave a profound imprint on my soul. Regardless of their coldhearted, cruel and sadistic behaviour, we still want them. Like Bee. She pushed past all of this and broke down his walls and loved him with all her heart. I seriously loved her, she too had her dark moments but man did she shine through. She was like a beacon of light. Her teasing Phoenix all the time and their banter never failed to bring a smile to my face as well as tears, there were so many scenes with them that made me laugh, don't worry I didn't forget the boys, damn they were hilarious to read.

“I loved the sound of owing the great Phoenix De Lange a favor. Please, please let it be sexual.”
...

"Warm fuzzies?"
"I don't do warm fuzzies."
Well, we can't win 'em all.
"I do scorching blazes," he muttered under his breath. "That sear you alive."

It was heartbreaking to see him punish himself over and over again, by not eating food, not allowing to act on his feelings towards Bee. Phoenix became a shell of a man, he lived with his guilt everyday to the point he wouldn't care if he died, this is a man who's damaged by his horrific past and was unable to see past his misdeeds. He felt like he was unworthy of anything especially Bee, he believed he had no right to feel any pleasure of life. It was fufilling to see him overcome his shortcomings and become whole, the last 25% brought tears to my eyes, i loved seeing him happy with Bee. He finally found redemption and it melted my heart.
“Help.” He parroted, his lips finding mine. “That’s what you were at first… a lifeline.” “And now?” “My savior,” he said in a reverent voice.

I am really going to try and not go on and on about this book and how great this series really is, because if you are reading this book then you should have already read the first four books. And if you have then you already know how great this series and all of the characters are. You know how complex and heartbreaking each character can be. You have also been waiting for Phoenix to get his redemption and I think he might have just done it.

Phoenix’s role was cast a long time ago. He was destined to be the monster, the villain his father mad him into. Now he just going through the motions. Living his life in a way that keeps everyone around him safe. So that the monster that is in him doesn’t get set free. When Bee stays in the same house he tries to fight the warmth, the urge to live and learn what love really means. Understandable right? A monster doesn’t deserve to feel anything.

Phoenix, oh Phoenix. All of the characters that Rachel Van Dyken creates are broken and carry a heavy load. There is always something about them you don’t see, notice, or learn until their book comes along. I have been building this book and Phoenix’s character up in my head ever since I found he was going to have a book. Even while he was portrayed as a monster there was always something more to him. At first I was worried, I mean how was Rachel going to redeem Phoenix and I think she had with every book after the first one. Little by little Phoenix was stealing my heart and he took it completely with this book. He was great. His character was heartbreaking and broken but his journey was beautiful.

Bee has been locked away for most of her life. She has been passed around between family members for most of her life, never having a real friend. Until Phoenix comes and protects her from her father. Now she is determined to show Phoenix that he deserves redemption. That he is no longer the person he used to be. No matter how many times Phoenix pushes her away, and every warning she gets from her new family, she will fight to save Phoenix and the love she has for him.

I freaking loved Bee’s character. She was a lot stronger than I gave her credit for in the beginning. Bee was never introduced to the Mafia world the way the other characters have been. She has been beyond sheltered and it definitely showed. She was everything that Phoenix wasn’t and everything he needed. She was full of life and very bubbly. While she had her own problems and insecurities she was determined to make Phoenix live. Bee was shown a lot throughout this book. She was introduced to a world that is dark and violent and she kept on making jokes and pushing Phoenix’s buttons. She was just great overall.

Phoenix and Bee had a lot to overcome in this book. Not only did they have the problems with the family that kept on coming but they had their relationship to work through. Phoenix has his guilt and panic that the monster that he has tamed will come back. He goes through so much more than I ever thought. I am usually able to pick a couple or a book that is my favorite but I really can’t. This series as whole is just amazing. With every book the series builds on itself and the characters become more than what they are in their books. While these books are stand alones I would never read them that way. The story is great individually but the story becomes so much more when you read them together. Phoenix’s story is one that is heart wrenching and difficult but it’s also a story about finding peace, love, and redemption.

I thought that this was going to be the most heartbreaking story to read in the series but after the buildup with Sergio. I think I just might be wrong. My heart is already breaking and I haven’t even read the book yet.

A phoenix rises out of the embers and begins anew, but in order to get there, who gets dragged into the fire with him, and are they safe from the blazing flames, or will they get irreparably burned?

Monster. Rapist. Murderer. Lost cause.

These are the terms that plague Phoenix De Lange, both in his reality and nightmares. The darkness consumes him and the monster within constantly claws at his psyche, hoping to break free and regain control of the man who has now been given a second chance and become head of the Nicolasi family. Although he has been immersed back into the Elite fold, it has not been with open arms, and Phoenix’s friends’ inability to see him as more than the sum of his misdeeds – a monster just waiting to be released back into the open – guts him more than he’s willing to admit.

Phoenix epitomizes the word damaged, and he copes with it the best he can by focusing on the job, keeping himself cold and indifferent because any type of feeling could possibly push him over the edge, and he refuses to fall again…he doesn’t want to be that man again…the one manipulated and programmed by a sadistic father. He knows he can never make amends, never regain his soul, but he refuses to allow his demons to take over regardless of how strong they push against him and whisper to him to give into temptation and become who he was meant to be.

Bianka (Bee) Campisi, Tex’s younger sister, has her own demons to keep at bay, and although they are not nearly as dark or due to a darkness within, the loneliness and insecurity she feels due to the mistreatment and neglect she endeared at the hands of her father torments her on a daily basis, making her feel worthless and rejected.

Bee is the light to Phoenix’s dark…the warmth to his cold…the blessing to his curse. From their first interaction, Bee has seen beyond the monster and has fought to show him that he’s worth fighting for, but her battle, at times, feels like it’s all for naught because the push and pull between them, the abrasive treatment at Phoenix’s hands is a bit overwhelming because of her isolated childhood and the need to feel protected and special.

Rachel Van Dyken does a tremendous job of illustrating Phoenix’s tormented thoughts and feelings and allowing an anti-hero to work towards redemption by his own actions and the love and care of others. It’s an uphill battle for most of the text between Bee and Phoenix, Tex and Phoenix, basically everyone and Phoenix, but there are moments of clarity amongst the Mafia men and their women in respect to Phoenix that empower Phoenix to pull himself out of the darkness and into a light that he may not think he deserves, but he’s finally willing to grab hold and never let go of something that unthaws the coldness that has surrounded him.

Ember continues to shed light on the duplicitous nature of the mob and those enemies who are always threatening to undermine every decision and move made. Trust is an aspect in this world that is hard to grasp and completely feel at ease with, even with those closest to you. And in true Elite series fashion, never accept anything at face value because there’s always more to the picture that what there seems to be and sooner or later, secrets and lies are exposed in dealt with in the only way the Mafia knows – blood.

Elude can’t some soon enough, especially with what happens with Sergio in Ember and what readers know, after reading it, the battle he has in front of him.

Every time Rachel releases a new cover to any of her books I pre-make my blog posts because she's always a one-click for me. This was a long-a** wait let me tell you what, I found myself hounding that girl everyday asking if Phoenix was ready yet. He's an oddball, I mean the boy sometimes doesn't know what to do and even though he's a total bada** I think he's scared of what Bee brings out of him like any mafia man he's quite possessive of what's his, and Bee is his, he just needs to pull his head out of his a** long enough to figure it out I mean seriously why else get all jealous, "his jaw cracked. "Of course it would! A girl wouldn't be trying to get into your damn pants!" He's seriously in denial ladies. Once head is removed from a** their naughty times are HOT! And we learn Phoenix is a show type of man not a tell, "oh, I'm hot..." I cupped her a** and jerked her against me. "But do I feel bothered? Even a little bit?" Each book gets better and better but Chase his is still my favorite I can't wait to see what Sergio has to offer.

4.5 searing stars

It's been a while since I have been back in the world of Elite and the 5 families.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Phoenix after what we had seen of him in previous books.

But boy oh boy does Ms Van Dyken do the man justice. My heart ached for him as we got to learn more of the man inside.

And enter Bee, Tex the Cappo's sister. She brings a lightheartedness to Phoenix that you would never think you would see.

I loved the humour amonst the families and friends - yes, they are mafia but they are young and that shines through a lot.

Now straight onto Elude - oh Sergio what are we going to do with you/

I really binged the first 5 pretty hard and enjoyed those a ton. For some reason this book, this set of characters, got a little monotone. I just didn't find the spark that the other books had. I don't think I can fall for yet another insta-love with no lead up. Still enjoyed all the past characters and their antics though!!! I think there are at least 4 more book in this series to date - but I'm going to have to put this series on pause for right now. Happy Reading!!
