The Man in the Blue Tie: Our 9/11 Stories

Rate this book
We all remember where we were that day. Just like the day Kennedy was shot or the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, we found that we were shocked together, we were angry together, we were sad together and we mourned together. Just like those days, September 11th, 2001 became a part of our National Memory. In his book, Einstein's Shutter, author Vincent Yanez wrote about those days and weeks following that day in September, but he never told the story of what he saw that day. This book is not only his account of where he was, but is also a collection of stories from all over the world, from every day people who also wanted to share what that day meant to them.

My favourite book of 2014! What an amazingly brave story the author has to tell about his healing journey back from 9/11, and stories from people from around the world tell how they remember that day. I was honoured to be one of those people that the author asked to share my story in his book.

I'm in two minds about this book. Part of me thinks it's a poignant collection of stories of people who remember where they were on 9/11 and their thoughts and emotions. The other part of me thinks of it as an advertisement for another of the author's books, Einstein's Shutter, because there are so many excerpts from it in this. That's why I've only given it 3 stars, because if it was supposed to highlight other peoples' stories, why stick so much of another book in it? Surely pointing people towards it at the end, or including a sample chapter at the end would have been a better strategy, because chopped up inside another work, it looks and feels like filler. However that does not take away from some of the raw emotion presented here.

Disappointing read. Too $$ for such a brief and limited number of views and stories

Felt like much of this was self serving to promote other books of the author. Like everyone else alive at the time I remember where I was, who was with me, what we were doing and all the weeks, months that have followed. The authors dips into his political beliefs, views on the memorial and the arrogance of America were unnecessary. We were humbled, found new strength and compassion and have somewhere along the way weakened in many ways over the ensuing years. Opinions - we’ve all got them. This quick read wasn’t the place for them - IMO.

A Wonderful Sad Story

This is actually the first book I have read about 9/11. I remember being at work when someone mentioned the Tower had been hit. We didn’t have a TV in our part of the office building and so at lunch I ran out and purchased one. Then we could all see repeats of what had happened. This story was much the same. It reminded me of what had happened and how people felt about it. I’m happy the author wrote it and happier still that he had other contribute to it. That was a sad time in our history, but it was a good book. Sad, but also good.

Bagpipes

Reading this book, reading your story and others I connect with 2 points. 9:11 changed from a reminder of the day to saying a blessing a grand way to help! But your telling of the many people who were affected in so many ways, helped me think of others more than myself and my sorrow.

9/11

9/11 has affected every person in the world. Everyone has a story to tell about that awful day. This author tells how he couldn't tell his story, but skirts around it...until he was ready years later. It was interesting to read others' various stories. I recommend this book.

This is a beautiful book. Mr. Yanez weaves his personal story of the events on 9/11 through the stories of contributors and their perspectives of the events of that horrific day and the ensuing aftermath. I read the entire book in less than 24 hours. It was gripping, poignant, and cathartic. This is Vincent Yanez's best work yet.

A short book about the author an his relationship with the events of 9/11. He interspersed his story with those of people from all over. Everyone who was alive that day has a story. Each story is unique and even for those with of us that weren't present physically the day will always be haunting our memories.

Stories about 9/11 by people all over the world who shared what they remember about that day, while the author comes to terms to be able to tell his own story about that day. The author also tell where the title come from.

Great short read!

Captivating from word one. Although a short read it reminds us no matter where we were in the world on 9/11 suddenly we were one.
