York Notes on "Mill on the Floss" by George Eliot

Rate this book
Based closely on the author's own life, Maggie's story explores the conflicts of love and loyalty and the friction between desire and moral responsibility. An accurate, evocative depiction of English rural life, this compelling narrative features a vivid and realistic cast, headed by one of 19th-century literature's most appealing characters.

So, this is one of the books when someone asks me which one is my favourite!

I love going back to it and reading random chapters, it’s such a great book to shun overthinking and go back to happy times instantly like it’s a portal.

I first read this about ten years ago and hated it. I thought too many characters were cruel and the loss of Mrs tullivers furniture a great calamity. However rereading it now was a completely different experience. It is beautifully written and the characters seem real people rather than cruel stereotypes. The ending was a bit sudden and I would much rather have had a happy ending but tom and Maggie's fate was signalled throughout. It seems that the mood one is in really alters how a book is perceived. This stands as a great reminder that we can be our own worse enemies.
